Various Artists - "Folk Generation - The Vanguard History Of American Folk Music 1960/1978" - 2CD set: FNAC Music/Vanguard 662254 (France)/Cassette: FNAC Music/Vanguard 664253, 1993:

FNAC Music/Vanguard 662254 (France) - front scan by Hans Seegers

FNAC is a record store chain in France/Belgium. The album tracks are all Newport Folk Festival live recordings. The 2CD set contains 40 tracks, and all the tracks including Bob are on CD2. The cassette contains 20 tracks, and has only R-0311 (previously thought to be R-0021) and R-0022.

R-0020-6 Ye Playboys And Playgirls - with Pete Seeger, recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 28 Jul 1963, from the Vanguard album Newport Broadside (Topical Songs), see 1964 (stereo version)
This song has always been thought to have been recorded at the afternoon workshop on 27 Jul 1963, but sources such as Glen Dundas and Derek Barker (in Appendix 1 to his 2008 Chrome Dreams book "The Songs He Didn't Write: Bob Dylan Under The Influence") now think it took place on the following day. R-0311-5 With God On Our Side - with Joan Baez (stereo version), from the Vanguard album Newport Broadside (Topical Songs), see 1964
This performance is now known to have been recorded during the morning workshop on 27 Jul 1963 and is not the performance from Joan's set at the evening concert on 28 Jul 1963 (R-0021), and also not the performance from the afternoon workshop on 26 Jul 1963 as originally stated here. The real R-0021 was not actually released until 2005 - for video footage of this performance see both the 2005 US Columbia/Legacy DVD No Direction Home - Bob Dylan (see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3) and the 2007 US Columbia/Legacy DVD The Other Side Of The Mirror: Bob Dylan Live At The Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965 (see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 4). The performance released in 1997 on the Joan Baez Live At Newport CD is from 1964 (R-0253, see 1997). The performance from the Newport Broadsides (Topical Songs) album (see 1964) has been renumbered R-0311. Thanks to Larry Crum and Bob Stacy for information.

R-0022-11 Blowin' In The Wind - recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 26 Jul 1963, from the Vanguard album Evening Concerts At Newport Vol. 1, see 1964 (stereo version)

These are the same three songs that appeared on several Vanguard and other LPs in the early 1970s - apparently they also appear on a European CD called Newport Folk Festival, more details of that required. (This name and content appeared in 1964 as the name of a Fontana UK 3LP set also called Newport Folk Festival and having the same three songs, again I need more information on that).

Fontana STFL 6035 (UK stereo) - LP front (my copy)

I previously reported that We Shall Overcome (R-0023) was also on this album. In fact it's a version by Joan Baez, recorded at Miles College, Birmingham, AL, from her 1963 Vanguard album Joan Baez In Concert, Part 2 (my UK stereo copy is Fontana STFL 6035).

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Antoine Glemain for information and scans.

Factory compilation Dylan Country (see 2004) and the US Putumayo compilation American Folk (see 2005).

The Dylan picture in the front insert booklet (see German release below) is from Auckland, New Zealand, in 1986, and is the one used for the fronts of the various Band Of The Hand singles, see 1986.

Elektra 7599-61464-2 (Germany) - front scan by Hans Seegers (1993 release)

The German Elektra CD was distributed throughout Europe except the UK, which had a separate release on the MCA label.

The German release in a card sleeve can be dated as 1995 because the sleeve has a front sticker quoting the US alternative-country music magazine "No Depression", which did not start publishing until 1995. There's a small blue sticker with the catalogue number on the rear of the sleeve. This copy has no booklet, although the CD looks the same as the CD of the 1993 jewel case release. This copy could have been used for promotional purposes, although there is nothing that indicates a promo.

R-0218 Trust Yourself - Bob contributes backing vocals for Carlene Carter on her version of the song from Empire Burlesque, recorded at Huh Studios, Los Angeles, CA, Jan 1993

This non-album bonus track was released only on a CD single Sweet Meant To Be (a track from her album Little Love Letters) distributed with the album in some European countries and sold separately in others. R-0218 also appeared on the 1996 Carlene Carter compilation CD Hindsight 20/20 (see 1996), and later on the 1997 BMG Various Artists compilations What's New Vol. 16.and May Your Song Always Be Sung (for both see 1997).

The CD single has a blue circular sticker with white text "Geld oder Liebe [Money or Love]". Thanks to Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff for information that "Geld oder Liebe" was a German TV show with musical guests that ran from 1989 to 2001. The sticker implies that Carlene had performed on the show around the time the single was released.

Two solo songs by Bob from the 1973 Forest Hills show, Only A Pawn In Their Game (R-0891) and A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall (R-0892), appeared on a Riverside Records 12" acetate LP, see 2011. The acetate LP also has Joan singing All My Trials and We Shall Overcome. The 1964 acetate above also includes Bob and Joan duetting on Blowin' In The Wind (R-0377).

R-0220-2 Mama, You've Been On My Mind - with Joan Baez guesting at a Dylan concert, Philharmonic Hall, New York City, 31 Oct 1964 (wrongly dated as Forest Hills, New York, 8 Aug 1964, where Bob guested at Joan's concert)

This previously appeared on a Columbia acetate (one of the "Goldmine acetates") which surfaced in 1980, see 1980. It was officially released for the first time on a Dylan album in Mar 2004 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964.

R-0221 Blowin' In The Wind - with Joan Baez in the Rolling Thunder Revue, Fort Collins, CO, 23 May 1976 (wrongly dated as Fort Worth, TX, 16 May 1976)
This performance appeared in the Hard Rain TV special but was reportedly not included on the Columbia album because of contractual difficulties, see VHS & DVD 1970s.

This 28 track compilation over 2 CDs focuses on Bob's rock side and is cased in a superb three panel fold-out digipak with illustrations by popular Japanese cartoonist and Dylan fan Jun Miura, who also selected the tracks. The release was cancelled and only promotional copies were manufactured. Very few copies exist outside Japan and they fetch a high price if they become available. One of the most attractive and expensive Dylan rarities!

The set includes three tracks from singles that were contained on the Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3 (see below) and which were also on the 1978 Australian compilation Masterpieces (see 1978), plus the alternate take of From A Buick 6 from the original US and Japanese stereo pressings of Highway 61 Revisited (see 1965):

R-0130-8 Rita May (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) - Desire out-take released on 7" singles Nov 1976/Jan 1977, see 1976/1977, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
R-0130 is also on PRG 52, an Italian promo compilation (see 1977), on the 1978 Japanese/Australian compilation Masterpieces, see 1978, and the Japanese release Mr. D's Collection #3 below. R-0130 appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). It was also one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, also see Online Performances (Other). It is now also released on the 2010 version of Dylan Ga Rock (see 2010)

R-0054-7 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues - live at Liverpool, May 1966 (5:41), B-side of 7" singles, see 1966.
This live version, never released on a regular Columbia album, is also on the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see 1974), the Japanese promo EP Mr. D's Collection #2 (see 1976), the 1978 Australian set Masterpieces (see 1978), and the Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see 2005). It's also on Dylan Ga Rock (see below and 2010). Sadly, it does not appear on the B-side of a withdrawn CBS Spanish EP (see 1972), because the record was mispressed with It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry from Highway 61 Revisited instead! This track is now one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other), and is also on
the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set The 1966 Live Recordings, Nov 2016. All versions are still in mono as originally recorded.
Fred Muller says the version on the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set The 1966 Live Recordings is not only longer at 6:51, but slightly clipped at the beginning when compared with the versions on Masterpieces and The Band: A Musical History. This is confirmed by Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford, who say that the first two bars of the performance on the 1966 mono single and subsequent releases of R-0054 up to 2016 were spliced in from the performance of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from the ABC Theatre, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 6 May 1966! This was however not done by Richard Alderson who recorded both shows. In a Jan 2017 email conversation between Richard and Peter Coulthard, Richard said that he handed all his 7" Nagra reels over to Howard Alk at the end of the tour and never saw them again. It's possible that the splice was done by Mike Claydon of I.B.C. Recording Studios, London, who was contracted by Columbia to make four recordings from Sheffield, 16 May 1966,onwards, or maybe by Columbia engineers in the USA, although the time scale is unbelievably short. This means that track 8 on CD14 of The 1966 Live Recordings is not the same as R-0054, and now has a new R-number, R-1906.

R-0084-11 George Jackson ("Big Band" version) - lyrics on bobdylan.com here, from 7" singles, see 1971
This track is not on the 2010 release of Dylan Ga Rock. For other appearances of R-0084 on LP and CD compilations, also see 1971.

R-0046-2 From A Buick 6 - alternate take 4 with harmonica intro (3:06), see 1965
This is this track's only appearance on an officially released CD. It was, of course, the "standard release" of the track in Japan, so not a Japanese rarity! This track is not on the 2010 release of Dylan Ga Rock.
Take 4 has now been released on The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (6CD Deluxe Edition) CD2, track 19, and The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's Edition) CD6, track 4. Because the 6CD Deluxe Edition is widely available, R-0046 is no longer a rarity.

I am now positively informed that the version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? in this set is in mono, and not the stereo version R-0513 unavailable on commercial CD until 2015. The version available as on Masterpieces (1978) and Biograph (1985, remastered CD reissue 1997) and the 2000/2001 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations is also from the original single and still in mono! The single version released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (CD10, track 12) is in stereo and has been remixed from the original tapes. R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of this massive set.

Thanks to Moise Potié for information and to Anthony Perry, Jean-Pol Hiernaux and Wil Gielen for scans. Thanks to Michio Kinoshita for news that Sony Music Japan are planning to release a new version of this 2CD compilation on 10 Mar 2010! Full details are included in 2010.

Jun Miura photo from secondhandsongs.com

As can be seen in 1993 Jun Miura also created extremely collectable Dylan memorabilia such as posters using the design from the Dylan Ga Rock booklet and a "One More Cup of Coffee" coffee mug. Jun Miura also drew the artwork for the 2003 Japanese edition of The Essential Bob Dylan, see International Album Releases (Regular) and the 2004 Japan-only Dylan compilation Iden & Tity, see International Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations) 2000s. He uses the same Bob in hat and shades image for all three and in his "Iden & Tity" comic books! There is also a "Dylan Ga Rock" book, published in Japan by Byakuya Shobo on 20 Aug 2006. It's actually called the "Miura Jun Magazine Vol. 1" but there have been no subsequent issues.

"Mr. D's Collection # 3" - promo compilation CD, Sony Records XDCS 93133 (Japan), 1993:
Like the 1970s LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see 1974) and EP Mr. D's Collection #2 (see 1976), this limited release Japanese CD was given away in a Sony album promotion, in this case by buying ten current Sony CDs within a month and sending in the obis. It's one of the highest priced Dylan CD collectables, though not as expensive as Dylan Ga Rock (see above). Every track on this CD was a Dylan rarity until Nov 2002, and even now only one track is released on CD in the USA.

R-0064-3 I Ain't Got No Home (Woody Guthrie) (3:44) - from Tribute To Woody Guthrie, 1972, recorded Jan 1968, see 1972
This performance also appears on the Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see 2005).

R-0066-4 The Grand Coulee Dam (Woody Guthrie) (2:56) - from Tribute To Woody Guthrie, 1972, recorded Jan 1968, see 1972
Now also available on the 2001 Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see 2001.

R-0084-12 George Jackson ("Big Band" version) (5:32) - lyrics on bobdylan.com here, from 7" single, see 1971
For other appearances of R-0084 on LP and CD compilations, also see 1971.

R-0085-3 George Jackson (Acoustic version) (3:38) - 1971 single, see 1971
This was the first CD appearance of this rarity! It was released on the 1974 Japanese limited release LP Mr D's Collection #1 (see 1974). It has since been released on a "Limited Tour Edition Bonus Disc" with the 3CD compilation The Essential Bob Dylan in Holland (see 2003), and is now also included on the Light In The Attic US release
Listen, Whitey! The Sounds Of Black Power 1967-74 (see 2012), on Side Tracks, the bonus 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks with The Complete Album Collection Vol. One (see 2013), and on the Sony Music Holland 2CD release Top 40 Bob Dylan (see 2019).

R-0130-9 Rita May (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) (3:11) - Desire out-take, released on singles Nov 1976/Jan 1977, see 1976/1977, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
This track also appears on PRG 52, an Italian promo compilation (see 1977), on the 1978 Japanese/Australian compilation Masterpieces (see 1978). It's also on the 1993 Japanese promo-only release Dylan Ga Rock (see below). R-0130 also appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). It was also one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, also see Online Performances (Other). It is now also released on the 2010 version of Dylan Ga Rock (see 2010)

R-0136-3 People Get Ready (Curtis Mayfield) (2:45) - rehearsals, Studio Instrumental Rentals, New York, October 1975, from 4 Songs from "Renaldo & Clara" promo 12" single, 1978

R-0137-3 It Ain't Me Babe (5:14) - live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975, from 4 Songs from "Renaldo & Clara" promo 12" single (see 1978), also released on European Dignity CD singles (see 1995). The version released in Nov 2002 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, is a remix, so R-0137 remains a rarity. Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing this out.

Don Handy considers that this performance is different from the Harvard performance which is on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, and he suggests it actually comes from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. Both Glen Dundas and Olof Björner confirm the 20 Nov 1975 date, not 4 Dec 1975.

R-0138-2 Never Let Me Go (Joseph Wade Scott) (2:49)- version from 4 Songs from "Renaldo & Clara" promo 12" single, 1978, live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975

R-0205-3 Dead Man, Dead Man (3:55) - live from Saenger Performing Arts Center, New Orleans, LA, 10 Nov 1981, B-side of 1989 Columbia single (see 1989). Now also available on the 2001 Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances (see 2001)

R-0191-5 The Usual (John Hiatt) (3:33) - from the Hearts Of Fire soundtrack, 1987

R-0202-2 Pretty Boy Floyd (Woody Guthrie) (4:36) - from the Columbia Woody Guthrie/Lead Belly tribute album Folkways: A Vision Shared, see 1988. For the video and DVD releases see VHS & DVD 1980s
