"Bob Dylan at WBAI" - CD-R and cassette releases, Pacifica Radio Archives IZ 1156 (USA), Mar 2011:

Pacifica Radio Archives IZ 1156 (USA) - CD-R scan by Larry Crum

Undated WBAI performances of I'm Goin' Down To New Orleans; Corrina, Corrina; The Death Of Emmett Till; Lonesome Whistle Blues; Farewell; If Not For You; You Ain't Goin' Nowhere; New Morning; I'll Keep It With Mine and Talkin' John Birch Society Blues.

Tim Dunn says: "This is not Dylan performing these songs live at WBAI as implied, but studio tracks, in some cases official cuts. The source of each track sounds to be from a vinyl LP. Despite having nine songs the CD indicates five tracks. New Morning is not on my CD or cassette. The track order also is incorrect and some song titles wrong. My CD and cassette, with sources:"

For the original release of this performance on the withdrawn version of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, see

"Bob Dylan And Cynthia Gooding" - CD-R and cassette releases: Pacifica Radio Archives IZ 1211 (USA), Mar 2011; "Folksinger's Choice With Cynthia Gooding" - 2CD set: Pacifica Radio Archives IZ 1256 (USA), 2011

Pacifica Radio Archives IZ 1211 (USA) - CD-R scan by Larry Crum
This release features a live radio broadcast with 11 songs, two of them newly-written Dylan originals, performed by Bob during an interview with Cynthia Gooding for the "Folksinger's Choice" WBAI radio programme, recorded 13 Jan 1962, in New York City, broadcast 11 Mar 1962. (These dates are speculative, some say the programme was never actually broadcast.)

The interview is notorious for the outrageous lies Bob tells to the admiring Cynthia about his early life!

R-0887 Bob introduces the Beastie Boys' track No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn from the album Licensed To Ill in an excerpt from Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Show Episode 48 "New York" broadcast 4 Apr 2007
André Wilbers says this is not actually included on the album!

For more information, see here . The Beastie Boys' album Check Your Head contained a sample of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from Highway 61 Revisited on the track Finger Lickin' Good, see 1992. The Beastie Boys also quote two lines from Subterranean Homesick Blues in the song Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win.

The B-side is blank. The single comes in a custom sleeve with a front cut-out for the A-side label. The record and sleeve of my copy were made in the EU.

The Ting Tings are an English indie pop duo composed of Jules de Martino and Katie White. They had a UK No. 1 hit with That's Not My Name in 2008 and their album We Started Nothing has sold over 2 million copies.

"Joan Baez Concert" - 12" acetate LP, Riverside Records (no catalogue number) (USA), recorded 1963, surfaced May 2011:

Side 1 (includes R-0891 and R-0892), photo from eBay
This acetate LP contains live recordings of Bob in concert with Joan Baez, most probably from Forest Hills, New York, 17 Aug 1963. It comes in a buff Soundcraft generic sleeve with white labels with typewritten text. The recording belonged to a former engineer at Riverside Records, a New York-based label specialising in jazz, which operated between 1953 and the end of 1963. Soundcraft was a well-known acetate manufacturer of the time, and many circulating acetates are of jazz recordings. Side 1 has the two solo Dylan recordings listed below. Side 2 contains several Joan Baez songs plus an interview with her, but no Dylan.
Side 2 (no Dylan), photo from eBay

R-0891 Only A Pawn In Their Game - live at Joan Baez concert, Forest Hills, New York, 17 Aug 1963

R-0892 A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall - live at Joan Baez concert, Forest Hills, New York, 17 Aug 1963
This song also has a spoken introduction.

All the tracks on this acetate are not yet known, but Side 1 also has Joan singing All My Trials and We Shall Overcome. Two Dylan-Baez duets from this concert, Troubled and I Don't Know Why (R-0219) and Blowin' In The Wind (R-0377), can be found on a Vanguard acetate of the time (see 1964). R-0219 was released officially on the Joan Baez Vanguard boxed set Rare, Live & Classic, (see 1994). The performance is also included on the CD Songs From Sing Out! which accompanies Vol. 45 #3 (Fall 2001) issue of "Sing Out!" magazine (see 2001).

Thanks to Harold Lepidus for finding this on eBay.

As well as the 28-page stapled booklet in English there is a 40-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese. The Japanese booklet has a translation of Michael McCall's liner notes and "The story of this project back to 1967", both by Heckel Sugano, plus commentaries on Hank Williams, the twelve songs on the album and a list of Hank songs covered by Bob by Katsu Suzuki, Sep 2011. Wil Gielen has a promo CD-R of this release, which came in a single CD jewel case without inserts accompanied by a double-sided press sheet, and issued to music magazines and journalists well before the official release date. The twelve CD-R tracks (same as the commercial release) are numbered to 10 correctly and then numbered 12 and 13! He also has a promo copy, which is the commercial release with a numbered promo sticker on the rear insert and text "SAMPLE LOANED" printed on the centre of the CD itself. This was issued to radio stations, DJs and record stores shortly before the official release.

Pennies In A Jar (S-Curve 0731518012, USA, 2011) by Nikki Jean (my copy)

Paramount US DVD release (Season 2) - picture from www.amazon.com

R-0897 Don't Ever Take Yourself Away - previously unreleased out-take from Shot Of Love, recorded Clover Recorder, Los Angeles, CA, 23 Apr 1981
This song was released with revised lyrics by Nikki Jean on her 2011 S-Curve US album Pennies In A Jar as Steel And Feathers (Don't Ever), see Starlight In The East: Bob Dylan's Unreleased Songs.
Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for pointing out that this version has a possibly overdubbed steel drum intro not present on the original out-take to be found on bootleg albums. He also says that because the CBS TV series is available in Japan only on the AXN pay-TV channel, there is unlikely to be a Japanese release of the soundtrack album.

This song was used in Episode 15, Season 2: “Mai Ka Wa Kahiko [Out of the Past]”. For the Season 2 DVD release, see VHS & DVD 2010-19.

This song was released in 2021 on the 2CD Standard Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 16 - Springtime In New York 1980-1985, but as the original outtake without the steel drum intro. Therefore R-0897 remains a rarity.

The front insert is a single three fold sheet. Although the jewel case has a clear CD tray, the reverse of the rear inset is plain black. This release is on CBS Records rather than Columbia because the source is a CBS TV series. For an NCIS CBS TV series soundtrack with another Dylan rarity, see 2009.

Thanks to Freddy Ordóñez Araque, Harold Lepidus, Juan Antonio Yague Ayuso, Donald J Senno and François Kahn for information.

This unique compilation and highly recommended CD, compiled by site contributor Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff of Sony Music Germany and released only in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, includes 17 "fan favourites and rarities from five decades". The front sticker also says "Recommended by 'Rolling Stone'". As well as several tracks not usually included on compilations, the songs from 1962 to 2008 include three listed rarities. The album comes in a two-fold digipak with an eight page booklet.

R-0150-2 Trouble In Mind - Slow Train Coming out-take, full version (5:11)
Previously appeared (if at all) only as the B-side of 1979 Brazilian CBS 7" stereo single - it is reported that this release had the full song while other worldwide releases had a verse missing (R-0149, 4:17). For both R-0150 and R-0149, see 1979. Pure Dylan does have the full version! This song was released in slightly edited form (4:50) on Disc 3 of the 8CD+DVD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 - Trouble No More 1979-1981 (Deluxe Edition), 3 Nov 2017, so R-0150 remains a rarity.

R-0072 Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (Charles Badger Clark-Billy Simon) - solo version authorised by Bob, B-side of Watching The River Flow Columbia/CBS 7" mono and stereo singles, see 1971.
This performance also appeared on the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see 1974) and the Japanese and Australian 3LP set Masterpieces, see 1978. The versions on the mono and stereo singles, the stereo promo LP and the stereo 3LP set are all in mono, which means this is actually the first occurrence of R-0072 (stereo) all other entries are R-0072M (mono).
This take is different from the take released in 2013 on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), so R-0072 remains a rarity! Another performance unauthorised by Bob of the song with band and backing singers appeared on the Columbia album Dylan, see 1973. An unexpected 1974 version appeared on Disc 3 of the 6CD set
The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More Tracks" (Deluxe Edition), 2 Nov 2018.

R-0704-2 Moonshiner - live, Gaslight Café, New York, Oct 1962, from Bob Dylan Live At The Gaslight 1962, Starbucks/Hear Music/Sony Music Custom Marketing Group (USA), see 2005
