![]() Warner Bros 7706-WBGODS 111503 (USA) - Oscar promo CD scan by Hans Seegers |
Bob took part in a shoot for the video of this song in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA, on 23 Nov 2002. He appears in period dress with a wig and beard similar to the ones he wore at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, on 3 Aug 2002! This video, 3:10 in length, is included as a bonus DVD in the Limited Edition of the soundtrack album. Scans required of the standard edition without the bonus DVD!
The bonus DVD is NTSC, but region-free and will certainly play on a Region 2 DVD player. For details of the US DVD and VHS releases of the film itself, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 2.
Jack from Canada has two copies of this set, one of which has the bonus DVD made in the USA, and the other has the bonus DVD made in Mexico! Scans of both are shown for comparison - the colours are slightly different with the Mexican copy being browner. My copy is the same as his USA-made version. Thanks also to Jack of Canada for scans of the Canadian regular release without the bonus DVD. The soundtrack CD is brown rather than yellow-green.
The Warner Bros promo was sent only to members of the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the hope of obtaining Oscar nominations for Jeff Frizzell for composition of the Best Original Score and to Bob Dylan for Best Original Song. Unfortunately this did not happen. The European release was made in Austria and has a slightly smaller front sticker than the US release - the text is exactly the same. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
In the UK the US import Limited Edition can be obtained from Badlands, see my Trading page for contact details.
Various Artists - "Gods And Generals Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" - Limited Edition of film soundtrack album with bonus DVD, Sony Classical SICP 376-7 (Japan), 16 Jul 2003:
The discs come in a design of 2CD jewel case introduced before the slimline design (slimmer than a double-width 2CD jewel case but not as thin as the single-width slimline 2CD jewel case).
Thanks to Wil Gielen for information and scans.

Dylan" - Columbia/Legacy CK 89015 (USA), 1 Apr 2003/Columbia COL 511126 2
(UK), 24 Mar 2003:
This album was released in a digipak in both the US and the UK. There is a 16
page booklet with essays from Tom Piazza and Joel Moss.

R-0602 Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking
This recording is from 4 Mar 2002, in Bob's home studio in Malibu, with Bob's band plus Mavis and Yvonne Staples. All the tracks have a Biblical reference, this one is Mark 10:49. Other artists appearing include Shirley Caesar, Aaron Neville, Billy Preston and the Chicago Mass Choir. The US test pressing shown of Columbia/Legacy CK 89015 is by Digisonics of Northridge, CA, and dated 3 Feb 2003. Thanks to Gil Walker for finding this on eBay and to David Plentus for scans. Two copies of this test pressing have the identical handwritten text with later date 7 Feb 2003, so the insert has been photocopied. The CD-R just has the Columbia catalogue number and title. Thanks to Harold Lepidus for further information, and to Jack from Canada for scans of the Canadian release, which comes in a regular jewel case and not a digipak. |

R-0020 has always been thought to have been recorded at the afternoon
workshop on 27 Jul 1963, but sources such as Glen Dundas and Derek Barker (in
Appendix 1 to his 2008 Chrome Dreams book "The Songs He Didn't Write: Bob Dylan
Under The Influence") now think it took place on the following day.
The lyrics to this song have disappeared from bobdylan.com, but can be found

R-0022-11 Blowin' In The Wind

the Vanguard album Evening
Concerts At Newport Vol. 1, see 1964
This album also contains a performance by Joan Baez of A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, again live at Newport. For the first album in this Vanguard series, This Land Is Your Land: Songs Of Freedom, see 2002.
Thanks to Bob Stacy and Franck Faugere for information and scans.
Various Artists - "May Your Song Always Be Sung: The Songs
Of Bob Dylan Vol. 3" - 2CD set: BMG 82876 50567-2; 3LP set: BMG 82876 50567-1 (Germany),
26 May 2003:
The CD release of this set is housed in a three panel
card sleeve in a card slipcase.
R-0452-2 Rising Sun (Hufsteter/Larriva/Marsico/Quintana)
- Bob plays harmonica for the
Cruzados, 1983 (5:42)
The version from the
privately-produced album released in 2000, Cruzados -
Unreleased Early Recordings, is timed at 4:40, see 2000. This version
at the end of CD2 has a long pause after the end of the music,
followed by a voice saying "Hi! This is Bob...", thanks to Jean-Pol
Hiernaux for spotting this. Thanks to Hanns Peter Bushoff for confirming that
this version is indeed exactly the same as R-0452, and was sent to him by Tony
Marsico. The spoken fragment is actually taken from the Columbia 1965 Miami
Sales Convention message, see 1965.
Thanks to Ole Lien for information and thanks to Hanns Peter Bushoff of BMG Germany for his sterling work in compiling yet another album in this series, which was released both on CD and on vinyl, and for the promo CD-R copy. This 2CD set is a mixture of established and new (and sometimes unsigned) artists, ranging artistically from Rick Danko and the Cruzados to Eric Andersen and Onelinedrawing, and geographically from Norway via Romania to Japan. Eight tracks were recorded exclusively for this compilation.
For the previous May Your Song Always Be Sung collections see 1997 and 2001. For a Japanese single disc compilation with tracks from the first and second collections, see 2006.
There is also a 7-track single CD promotional sampler in a card sleeve, BMG 82876 52712 2, which includes R-0473. Thanks to Hanns Peter Bushoff for the sampler.
Ronald Born from Jena in Germany, who covers Black Diamond Bay on May Your Song Always Be Sung: The Songs Of Bob Dylan Vol. 3, has also contributed many scans of rarities to this site! In fact, all of the people named in the acknowledgments have contributed to this site except Jeff Rosen!
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan SA-CD Sampler" -
6-track Multichannel SA-CD, Columbia CSH 55838 (USA), 6 Jun 2003:
This was originally listed as a Dylan
album tracks compilation, but was moved here when it was announced that The Bootleg
Series Vol. 6: Live 1964 would be released in CD stereo only, turning
the SA-CD versions of All I Really Want To Do into rarities! See below for a
seven-track sampler from Oct 2003 with the same catalogue number.
Leading off the demonstrations, Steven Berkowitz (Senior Vice President A&R, Legacy Recordings) played track one which is from a previously unreleased Bootleg Series album recorded live in 1964. He told the group that this Dylan Remastered SA-CD would be coming out in October and would be the 16th disc in the series. The song features a 22 year old Dylan, singing with some enthusiasm and raw energy. This track is also interesting since it sounds like Dylan may have had a drink or two before the performance. (There was some talk in the listening session about Dylan being "a bit tipsy").
Various Artists - "The Essentials X Star Box" - promo compilation CD, Sony SDCS 83001 (Japan), 2003:
![]() Sony SDCS 83001 (Japan) - front insert scan by Wil Gielen |
This CD was issued to promote two series of Sony compilations: the
international Essential series (including The Essential Bob Dylan,
see below,

and the Japan-only Star Box series. Bob's contribution is a unique
edit of Like A Rolling Stone. The CD comes in a slimline CD single jewel
case with a single-sided card insert. R-0352 Like A Rolling Stone - 2:03 edit of album track from Highway 61 Revisited Thanks to Wil Gielen for information and scans. |

R-0442-3 Come Una Pietra Scalciata [Like A Rolling Stone] (Dylan/Aleotti/Perrini)
- cover version in Italian by Articolo 31 with excerpts from Bob's original version, from their 1998 Ricordi
(Italy) album Nessuno (see 1998), and on the May 2001 BMG Germany compilation May Your Song Always Be Sung

Also included are Gotta Serve Somebody - cover by Shirley Caesar from the Columbia album Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs Of Bob Dylan (see above) and City Of Gold - cover by the Dixie Hummingbirds from their 2003 album Diamond Jubilation (see Bob Dylan's Unreleased Songs "C" and "Covers" pages). These tracks are not in the film. Thanks to Harold Lepidus for pointing out that City Of Gold here has a spoken intro by Bob (dialogue from the film by Jack Fate).
This album has also been released as a 2CD limited edition (USA: Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax C2K 90618/UK: Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax 512556 6), including a 7 track version of the SA-CD sampler listed above. The extra track over the 6 listed below is R-0617 from the Masked And Anonymous soundtrack, but included not just in CD Stereo, but in SA-CD Stereo and SA-CD Surround Sound also. The "Reissue Series Sampler" CD design is that of a vinyl Columbia white label promo LP and the sampler CD catalogue number is the one shown on the spine of the digipak. For a separate promo release of this sampler, see below. The front insert of the regular album is a 16 page booklet with liner notes by Alan Light. In the Limited Edition the booklet is located in a pocket on the right of the digipak.

(Europe), Oct 2003:
This was originally listed as a Dylan album tracks compilation, but was
moved here when it
was announced that The Bootleg
Series Vol. 6: Live 1964 would be released in CD stereo only, turning
the live 1964 SA-CD versions of All I Really Want To Do into rarities! See above

This SA-CD sampler has the same catalogue number as the previous one, but is actually the 7-track sampler included with the Limited Edition of Masked And Anonymous (see above) in a gatefold card sleeve. Cold Irons Bound from Masked And Anonymous is the seventh track. This CD design is different from the sampler CD.
The inside of the gatefold sleeve has a pocket on the right for the CD. On the left are the pictures of the fifteen Dylan albums being released on hybrid SA-CD in Sep 2003, on the right is a plug for The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964 with a first look at the cover design. There is also a version of the US sampler with a slightly different rear design that was being given away with Sony SA-CD and DVD players at Christmas 2003. This has the same catalogue number but new text on the back: "CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE A SPECIAL PLAYER, YOU DESERVE A SPECIAL DISC". This was available both in a card sleeve and in a jewel case.
The European version of this sampler has the identical card sleeve but a different CD (silver instead of white). The CD is made in Austria.
Thanks to Peter Good for finding the US sampler on eBay, to Hervé from France, Pachi Becerril
and Ian Woodward for pictures.

This is one of a series of 2003 "Essential" collections using the same artwork style marketed by Columbia, including Bruce Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand:
For The Essential Johnny Cash, which contains Girl Of The North Country, the 1969 duet with Bob, see International Album Releases (Other Artists' Albums).
For The Essential Country Album, which contains I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, see International Album Releases (Various Artist Compilations) 2003.
"Custom Mix CD" - CD-R rarities compilation, Newbury Comics (USA), Dec 2003 onwards:
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information that this CD-R is now offered by Newbury Comics as a permanent item with the same fixed twelve tracks and artwork. The front insert and rear insert are always the same. The tracks are listed on a separate A4 sheet. Note that the timing of George Jackson (5:53) is a mistake. It's 3:38 and is the acoustic version (R-0085) and not the "Big Band" version (R-0084).
For full details of the rarities, see Online Performances (Other).
Thanks to David Plentus and Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information and scans.
