George3.jpg (29451 bytes) All international releases of this 7" single with George Jackson on both sides are listed here, although some were not released until 1972. For other Columbia vinyl releases including the "Big Band" version of George Jackson, see 1972. I have counted all the singles on this page as one occurrence each of the rarities. All releases were in stereo.

International releases with picture sleeves use photos from The Concert For Bangladesh, Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, 1 Aug 1971, also used on the cover of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2. For the Apple release of the evening Bangladesh concert, see 1972.

Both tracks are part of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other).

"George Jackson" - 7" promo singles, Columbia 4-45516 (USA), 12 Nov 1971:

Both sides of this single are currently unavailable on a regular Bob Dylan album, but it was released extensively round the world at the time, and four times in the USA, twice with blue/yellow promo labels and twice with red commercial labels. All US releases came in a plain army-green sleeve (see below).

R-0084 George Jackson - "Big Band" version - lyrics on bobdylan.com
This was the A-side in most countries

LP/CD releases of George Jackson:

R-0084 is on the Nov 1972 Japanese compilation Bob Dylan: Gift Pack '73 (see 1972), the 1978 Japanese/Australian compilation Masterpieces (see 1978), on the Japanese limited release items Mr. D's Collection #1 (LP), #2 (EP) and #3 (CD) - see 1974 for #1, 1976 for #2, and 1993 for #3. It is also on the 2CD Japanese compilation Dylan Ga Rock (1993 release only, not the 2010 release). The version of R-0084 on the CD release of the 1978 Japanese/Australian set Masterpieces (see 1978) is reportedly distorted, so the CD Mr. D's Collection #3 (see 1993) is where they both are to be found in the best quality. The R-0084 "Big Band" version appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). The web-site misidentified the track as R-0085.

R-0085 is on #1 and #3 of Mr. D's Collection only. It was also released on a "Limited Tour Edition Bonus Disc" with the 3CD compilation The Essential Bob Dylan in Holland, see 2003.

Both R-0084 and R-0085 are included in the 42 rarities in the Aug 2006 iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, also see Online Performances (Other).

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"George Jackson" - 7" commercial single, Columbia 4-45516 (USA/Canada), 12 Nov 1971/CBS 4-45516 (India), 1971:

CBS 4-45516 (India) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers

CBS 4-45516 (India) - B-side scan by Hans Seegers

The two variants of the commercial US single are as follows, R-0084 is now the A-side, even though some US promo singles just had R-0085 on both sides (with the same two variants, see above):

  1. Red Columbia labels with "(BIG BAND VERSION)" and "(ACOUSTIC VERSION)"  in capital letters, "BOB DYLAN" in large typeface
  2. Red Columbia labels with "(Big Band Version)" and "(Acoustic Version)"  in small letters "BOB DYLAN" in smaller typeface

Neither variant lists the publisher. Hans Seegers has a promo copy of the first variant with a white sticker with text "COMPLIMENTARY NOT FOR SALE", and a copy with a juke box strip. There was only one Canadian release of Columbia 4-45516, with orange Columbia labels.

The Indian release of CBS 4-45516 is very rare and has black CBS labels with silver text. It was manufactured for CBS records by the Gramophone Company of India Ltd. (part of EMI). For a copy of the generic CBS India sleeve used, see 7" Single Sleeves. For 1969 Indian singles of Lay, Lady, Lay and Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You with the same label style, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1969 (the singles are actually on separate sub-pages). For the very rare 1970 Indian stereo release of Wigwam, see US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1970-73.

"George Jackson" - 7" single, S CBS 7688 (UK)/CBS S 7688 (Ireland), 12 Nov 1971:

GeorgeJacksonUKAcetateA.jpg (23150 bytes)
CBS S 7688 (UK) - A-side of 10" acetate, scan by Hans Seegers ("Big Band" version)

The UK single is a puzzle in that the 10" acetate of the single shown here is pressed with the "Big Band" version as the A-side (although it's not actually marked on the acetate label which version is which, the A-side plays the Big Band version, and the B-side plays the Acoustic version). However, the actual released single unusually has the Acoustic version as the A-side. This was maintained when the UK single was re-released twice in the 1980s.

The Irish single also has the Acoustic version on the A-side, and is interesting in that the publisher credit changed on 1 Jan 1972, with text "B. Feldman & Co. Ltd. As of the 1st January, 1972, Publisher credit to be Big Ben Music Ltd.".

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Ronald Born for information and scans.

"George Jackson" - 7" single, CBS S 7688 (West Germany), 12 Nov 1971:

CBS S 7688 (West Germany) - front scan by Hans Seegers (promo release)

The West German single has the "Big Band" version as the A-side. The promo version has the regular single inside the sleeve. For the generic "CBS-Blitzinformation" rear sleeve of the German promo single, see 7" Single Sleeves.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS 7688 (NL/Sweden), 12 Nov 1971:

George3.jpg (29451 bytes)
CBS 7688 (NL) - front scan by Hans Seegers ("Big Band" version)
Hans Seegers has eight sleeve variations of the Dutch single, which has the "Big Band" version as the A-side. Obviously CBS' Dutch printers were not too fussy about colour matching batches of sleeves! These are as follows:
  1. "BOB DYLAN" in red, "GEORGE JACKSON" in violet
  2. "BOB DYLAN" in red, "GEORGE JACKSON" in light purple
  3. "BOB DYLAN" in red, "GEORGE JACKSON" in pink
  4. "BOB DYLAN" in light brown, "GEORGE JACKSON" in light lilac-grey
  5. "BOB DYLAN" in dark reddish brown, "GEORGE JACKSON" in lighter violet-grey
  6. "BOB DYLAN" in wine red, "GEORGE JACKSON" in light violet-grey
  7. "BOB DYLAN" in dark wine red, "GEORGE JACKSON" in lighter violet-grey
  8. "BOB DYLAN" in reddish black, "GEORGE JACKSON" in blue-violet

There are actually four equally slapdash variations of the labels of the Dutch single!

  1. "RAM'S HORN MUSIC" on both sides of the single
  2. "Ram's Horn Music, Inc." on both sides of the single
  3. "RAM'S HORN MUSIC" on the A-side and "Ram's Horn Music, Inc." on the B-side
  4. "Ram's Horn Music, Inc." on the A-side and "RAM'S HORN MUSIC" on the B-side

It seems that CBS in Holland obtained two different print runs of the labels and combined them randomly on the records! The sleeve variations seem to be used at random with different records also.

CBS 7688 (Sweden) - front sleeve scan by Hans Seegers (Dutch sourced)
This rare Swedish single was sold in a Dutch sleeve, although the record itself was made in Sweden. The Dutch cover used is the variant with "BOB DYLAN" in dark reddish brown, "GEORGE JACKSON" in lighter violet-grey (5 above).

CBS 7688 (France) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers (injection labels)

CBS 7688 (France) - B-side scan by Hans Seegers (injection labels)

The French release of CBS 7688 had the "Big Band" version on the A-side and came with two different records, with the regular orange paper label and with an orange-brown injection label. For an injection label a thin coloured plastic ring-shaped layer is injected into the record itself, and the text/graphics cut out using a stamp so that the black vinyl underneath shows through, there is no paper label. The sleeve was the same for both.

These releases had no picture sleeves, and have the "Big Band" version as the A-side. The records have orange CBS labels. The Australian promo release is the commercial record with red promo stamps on each label.

Thanks to Bill Hester for information and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans.

"George Jackson" - 7" commercial singles, CBS 7688 (Spain), 1971/1972:

CBS 7688 (Spain) - front scan by Hans Seegers (both releases)
This single was released first in 1971 and then re-released in 1972. It had the "Big Band" version as the A-side. The 1972 release had a slightly different rear sleeve. The rear sleeve differences are in the copyright text on the bottom edge:

1971: "E[in a circle] Madrid 1972 Offset ALG - San Raimundo, 31 - Madrid-20"

1972: "E[in a circle] Offset ALG - San Raimundo, 31 - Madrid-20"

The records had orange CBS labels.

CBS 7688 (Italy) - front scan by Hans Seegers
All these singles released in 1972 had the "Big Band" version as the A-side.

The rear sleeve of the Italian single advertises the Sony "SQ" Quadraphonic system, then being launched. The promo copy of the Italian single is unusual in that it has a triangular hole punched right through it, which goes through the record as well as the sleeve. Luckily the hole is in the centre part of the record through the label and not through the playable part!

The Portuguese single was issued twice, with different record labels and a slightly differing rear sleeve. The front sleeve was the same for both releases.

Label variations:

  1. "GEORGE JACKSON << Big Band/Acoustic Version >>" on one line:

  2. "GEORGE JACKSON << Big Band/Acoustic Version >>"  on two lines

Sleeve variations:

  1. CBS logo on front and back is 15 x 15 mm, "GRAFICOS REUNIDOS-PORTO" in capital letters on the back, "Fabricado em Portugal" on the back

  2. CBS logo on front and back 20 x 20 mm, "gráficos reunidos-porto" in small   letters on the back, "Fabricado em Portugal" not printed on the back

The Norwegian single came in a monochrome sleeve, the reverse of which was plain white. This single was also exported to Denmark. Sweden had its own release, see above.

The Yugoslavian single was manufactured for CBS records by Suzy Records. There are two rear sleeve variations - the second has a "65" in a ring of circles below and to the left of the CBS logo.

All the records had orange CBS labels.

"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS/Sony SOPA 1 (Japan), 1972:

CBS/Sony SOPA 1 (Japan) - front scan by Hans Seegers

This single came in a folded insert with a Bangladesh picture of Bob. On the reverse are pictures of the Bob Dylan Greatest Hits Vol. 2 and Concert For Bangladesh albums, so this single is Jan 1972 or later. The "Big Band" version is the A-side.

The promo version of the single had white CBS/Sony labels, while the commercial version had orange labels. They both came in the same sleeve.
