In this age of fibreglass I'm searching for a gem."

27 Aug 2015: Thanks to "Isis" 181 for information that a Harvard Graduate School of Design essay published in 2010 about the Lower Manhattan Expressway (LOMEX) stated that Bob wrote a song called Listen, Robert Moses for activist Jane Jacobs in the early 1960s to support her campaign to get Robert Moses, designer of the project, which would have levelled fourteen city blocks in Little Italy and displaced almost 2,000 families and 800 businesses,to drop it. The lyrics are said to be in the Tuli Kupferberg (of The Fugs) collection of the Fales Library of New York University, and were published by the New York web-site "The Gothamist" on 26 Jun 2015. The song has been added to the "Starlight in the East" L page.

26 Aug 2015: Thanks to "Isis" 181 for information that Hard To Handle, the 1986 live concert recording by Bob Dylan with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, was prepared by Sony Music for a DVD release, but finally cancelled because Sony execs believe that people don't buy music DVDs any more! This is of course, stupid. The Rolling Stones have just released a concert filmed live at the Marquee in London from 1971 on DVD and Blu-ray, and released videos of concerts from 1975 and 1981 in 2014. People who watch everything on their smartphones may not buy music DVDs, but Dylan and Stones fans, of whom there are more than enough to make these releases commercially successful, do buy them! Time to rethink that decision, Sony! You may also have noticed the appearances of adverts from Google AdSense on the home and other pages of this web-site - this is to defray the considerable cost of the web-site.

20 Aug 2015: Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information that amazon.co.uk are listing four Dylan 1960s stereo vinyl albums to be released by Sony Music CMG (Custom Marketing Group) on 20 Nov 2015 - Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde (2LP set) and Nashville Skyline. These albums will include a "free" MP3 version, although I can't imagine why anyone who buys an album on vinyl would ever want to listen to the MP3 version.

18 Aug 2015: Thanks to Harold Lepidus for news that a new "Director-Approved Edition" of the 1967 D.A. Pennebaker documentary Don't Look Back is being released in the USA on 24 Nov 2015 on Blu-ray or a 2DVD set. The Blu-ray version is a newly restored 4K digital transfer, seen at its best on Ultra HD TVs, with newly restored monaural sound from the original quarter-inch magnetic masters. This 2015 edition contains new material as well as the five 1965 audio tracks that first appeared on the 2000 DVD edition.

14 Aug 2015: Thanks to Michel Pomarede for news that copies of the incredibly rare 1966 Amiga Phonoclub Bob Dylan album from East Germany (actually a version of the mono The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan) in both red and black vinyl are being sold on eBay and other outlets. My information is that these are unofficial reproductions, so are not recommended unless you are keen to own such a copy for its novelty value.

Also thanks to Tanya Leet of Harper Collins for the copy of Elijah Wald's book "Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night that Split the Sixties". I didn't feel obliged to give a good review, but it is a great book, and I put this on Amazon: "I have to agree with the majority of reviewers - I thought I knew everything about that night in Newport, but learned I didn't. I have had Dylan's performances for many years on bootleg, and also officially on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 (2005). However, I didn't appreciate all the politics of Newport (similar to the politics in folk clubs dominated by the CPGB in Britain in the 1960s), especially the obsession with the "purity" of the performers (again similar to "policy rules" here). I was fascinated by this book, and recommend it thoroughly. It's also worth reading "Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Fariña, and Richard Fariña" by David Hajdu. for a different perspective on the time, not complimentary towards Dylan."

"International Stereo Releases" is organised by album and split into "Regular Albums" (again with one page per album),  "Compilations" and "Stereo Singles (All Formats)".  The new "Index of International Releases by Country" will summarise both mono and stereo album and single releases by individual country.

Contacting Bob Dylan: This is a fan site with no connection to Bob - that means you can't contact him through me!  I used to have a postal address that I thought was correct, but I have since informed by someone who wrote to that address that their mail was returned. I have never had an email address. I can only suggest you contact Bob's publisher Simon & Schuster or use the contact address at bobdylan.com . I also have no means of helping anyone who wants to meet Bob Dylan or obtain his autograph!

Access the yearly pages from here by going to the Official Rarities Yearly Lists. Traveling Wilburys now have their own pages. "VHS & DVD" is now split into multiple pages, including pages for films and TV series with Dylan rarities and pages for films and TV series with Dylan album tracks. "International Mono Releases" now has a page per official album plus pages for compilation albums, mono 7" singles and mono 7" EPs. "International Stereo Releases" is split into "Regular Albums" (again with one page per album),  "Compilations" and "Stereo Singles (All Formats)". "Honourable Mentions" are items which don't qualify for these lists, but may be of interest to Dylan collectors. "Questionable Releases" and "Questionable Releases Video" are items sent in by contributors of dubious provenance.

Viruses and Spam

The Searching For A Gem site is always under sustained attack from Spammers, with 13,300 messages once received in one day. These messages are filtered out, and the Spam filters mean that if you do not put "Dylan" in the subject of a message it will be deleted and not reach the Searching For A Gem mailbox. If you have sent a message and not received a reply, please send it again with "Dylan" in the subject.

I obviously have to make this site's email address openly available so it's open to abuse by third parties. Some correspondents use ISPs whose Anti-Spam policies wrongly reject replies from me as Spam. If I can't send a message to you, I'll post a reply on the Updates page. Therefore, if you're expecting a reply from me and haven't received one, please look there.

This site is respectfully dedicated to the memory of Larry "Lambchop" Eden, who followed Bob all over the world for many years, and sadly died in 2007. I bought part of his Dylan collection when he was raising money to move to India some years before. He's one of the few fans Bob has ever acknowledged from the stage, saying "This is Lambchop. He's been to more of my shows than I have!". Let's hear it for the Chopper!
