R-0153-2 Pledge My Head
To Heaven (Keith Green) This Sparrow version is the original mix from So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt... (see 1980), not the "inferior" remixed version from I Only Want To See You There (R-0160, see 1983). SPD 1146 is in an old-style double-width jewel case, SPD 1558 is in a new-style single-width 2CD jewel case. This album and its Vol. 2 companion that does not include Bob are still in print (SPD 1558). The Dutch release was made by EMI in Uden, Holland, for European distribution. Pledge My Head To Heaven is also on a compilation CD of Keith Green remixes called Make My Life A Prayer To You: Songs Of Devotion, also from Sparrow Records, SPD 2062 - thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information that this is a live version with Bob not present (the album is available for download on iTunes). (The same live version of Pledge My Head To Heaven is released on the compilation CD Listen To Our Hearts - Vol. 2 : Moments, Devotion and Songs (Sparrow SPD 1692 / 7 2438-51692-2 9, Jan 1999) For The Ultimate Collection, yet another compilation by Keith Green containing this song, see 2002. Thanks to Hans Seegers, Johannes Hampf, Ole Lien and Peter Gilmer for information about these releases. |

(Warren Zevon) This album was re-released on CD in remastered form in January 2000: Virgin America 0777 7 86012 2 7 (USA), Virgin CDV 2433 (UK). A new version with two bonus tracks was released in the USA on 25 Mar 2003 by Virgin Records America Thanks to Brian Shoop and his "Zevonista" web-site for information and scans. In October 2002 Bob performed four Warren Zevon covers in concerts, as a tribute to Warren, who had then been diagnosed with terminal cancer, although not The Factory. (Warren died in 2003.) Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for scans of the US 2003 release. For US and UK singles with this track, see below and 1988. |

All the European LPs have red CBS labels. The Yugoslavian
release was distributed by Suzy Records, the CBS agent in the country. The US LP has an orange Columbia label with the logo in a ring. The South Korean LP release below is one of the few official Bob Dylan releases in that country and has unique brown CBS labels with the logo in the Columbia US-style ring. It has an insert in Korean with lyrics on the reverse side. |

All these CD releases are very hard to find today! CDs were released in the USA, Holland (made in Austria) and Japan only. The rear sleeve of the UK LP (see above) says the album is available "on cassette and compact disc", but apparently a CD was never released in the UK. However, it may have been intended originally to release the Austrian-made CD there. The Dutch CD uses the first design from the CBS Austrian pressing plant. "The Usual" - 7" and 12" promo and commercial singles, CBS 651148 7 (7"), CBS 651148 6 (12") (UK/NL/Spain/Portugal), 5 Oct 1987:
![]() UK 10" acetate of CBS 651148 7 A-side, scan by Arie de Reus |
Thanks to Arie de Reus for the scan of the UK A-side 10" acetate. This is
single-sided and has a generic white label from CBS Mastering Studios,
Whitfield Street, London, with handwritten text. R-0191-2 The Usual
(John Hiatt) - Hearts Of Fire album version Got My Mind Made Up from Knocked Out Loaded, the regular album version, was on the B-sides of both the 7" and 12" singles. Anthony Craig's copy of the UK 12" has a promo stamp - my copy of the commercial release is identical apart from missing the stamp. The second song on the B-side of the 12" single is listed on the UK 12" as They Killed Him (written by Kris Kristofferson) from Knocked Out Loaded on the sleeve and label but plays Driftin' Too Far From Shore (also from Knocked Out Loaded, though actually an Empire Burlesque out-take). The sleeve and label are correct, the record was mispressed. The Dutch and Spanish 12" single have the same two tracks listed, and correctly play They Killed Him. The front of the Dutch and Spanish 12" single (promo and commercial) has the extra words "MAXI SINGLE - 45RPM" above "BOB DYLAN". Hans Seegers has a Spainsh single-sided promo 7" single with yellow labels and a Portuguese promo 7" single with "CBS DISCO PROMOTIONAL VENDA PROHIBIDA" on the back cover. Thanks to Hans Seegers, Anthony Craig. Marc and Ulf Gyllenspetz for information and scans. |

"Down In The Groove" (first promo release) - acetate, Precision Lacquer/Columbia (USA), 7 Aug 1987; copper master disc, Precision Lacquer/Columbia (USA), 16 Nov 1987; Sony PCM 1630 digital tape CD master, also promo cassette, Columbia CK 40975-2 (USA), 17 Nov 1987:
![]() Columbia CK 40975-2 (USA) - Side 1 of Precision Lacquer acetate showing R-0195 and R-0196, scan by Arie de Reus |
The Precision Lacquer acetate is double-sided and dated "08/07/87". The Precision Lacquer copper master is single-sided and of Side 2 only, dated "11/16/87". Shenandoah is misspelled "Shannondoah" on all three masters. The PCM 1630 cartridge is dated "11/17/87". PCM 1630 was a high-quality professional digital audio tape format that used ¾" tape in a videotape cassette - it was superseded in the 1990s by DAT, which uses a much smaller tape cartridge. For the second version, see below. I previously had this listed as the second release, but the dates on this (16 and 17 Nov 1987) and the other master below (3 Dec 1987) now show the correct sequence. R-0195 Let's Stick Together (Wilbert Harrison) - slightly longer fade out (3:10 - released track is 3:08) R-0196 Got Love If You Want It (James Moore - "Slim Harpo") - this was replaced by Death Is Not The End on the final release R-0194 Important Words (Gene Vincent-Bill Davis) - this was replaced by The Usual from the Hearts of Fire film soundtrack (see above) on the second version of the album, and was itself replaced by the new version of Had A Dream About You, Baby on the final release in May 1988 - see International Albums (Regular). The track listing was: The first promo cassette of this album also had this tracklisting - scans required. Thanks to Arie de Reus for the scans of the acetate, and to Keith Venturoni and Larry Crum for finding the latter two items on eBay. |

The rumour at the time was that Down In The Groove was intended by Bob to be a double album but was cut down to a single album by Columbia. Certainly promos were released with these two alternative track listings before the final tracklist was decided and the album was eventually released in Jun 1988. Got Love If You Want It, Important Words and The Usual (see below) were replaced, and there are several unreleased covers from the sessions in circulation which may have been planned for inclusion on a two disc set. However, I have yet to see any physical evidence of anything other than a single album, so any "culling" must have been done before masters were created.
"Down In The Groove" (second promo release) - Precision
Lacquer/Columbia CK
40975-2 (USA), 3 Dec
1987 (copper master)/14 Dec 1987 (test pressing)/Feb 1988 (promo cassette):
For the first version of the album, see above. I previously had this listed as the first release, but the dates on these
items (3 Dec
1987 and 14 Dec 1987) and the other master above (17 Nov 1987) now show the correct sequence.
This copper master is also from Precision Lacquer and dated "12/03/87".
![]() Side 2 of a rare copper master of Down In The Groove, dated "12/03/87", showing The Usual (R-0191) as track 3 - picture found on eBay by Gil Walker |
R-0195-2 Let's Stick Together (Wilbert Harrison) - - slightly longer fade out, as the first version of the album R-0196-2 Got Love If You Want It (James Moore - "Slim Harpo") - as the first version of the album R-0191-3 The Usual
(John Hiatt) - from the Hearts Of Fire OST (see above), this replaced Important
Words from the first promo version (also see above) The second track listing (bold is new) was: For a mispressed Argentinean LP release that has the same tracklist as this, see 1988. Also shown is a test pressing from the CBS Records pressing plant in Carrollton, GA, dated "12-14-87". As can be seen it has generic labels from Carrollton that have not been written on, but there is a typed label on the plain white sleeve with details of the album and matrix numbers: Side 1: PAL-40957-1A, Side 2 - PBL-40957-3A. The final US release of the album was Columbia OC 40957. The handwriting on the label may not be contemporary. Thanks to Jeff Gold for scans of this pressing. There's no tracklist, but Jeff confirms it has the rarities above. |

Larry Crum has a copy from Australia of the second release promo cassette. There
are no markings on the cassette itself, and the inlay has a generic CBS inlay
card with typed text. Keith Venturoni has a US promo cassette of this second
release, more details will be added later. ("01-636-3434" is a London, England, telephone number in the then-used format, so I assume the origin of the cassette is the UK). Thanks to Arie de Reus for the scan. |
![]() Promo cassette inlay card, scan by David Plentus (second variant found in UK) |
David Plentus has a cassette copy which is from the UK and is virtually identical (the words "NEW L.P." and "Dec '87" are missing). |
The final track listing of Down In The Groove (blue is new) in May 1988 was:
Side 1 - Let's Stick Together (faded); When Did You Leave Heaven?; Sally Sue Brown;
Death
Is Not The End (1984 out-take from Infidels!);
Had A Dream About You, Baby
(remix of Hearts Of Fire track R-0193).
Side 2 - Ugliest Girl In The World; Silvio; Ninety Miles An Hour; Shenandoah;
Rank Strangers.
