If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!

Both Glen Dundas and Olof Björner confirm the 20 Nov 1975 date, not 4 Dec 1975. The other five live tracks on this album are from currently available Columbia live albums: I Don't Believe You (from The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Live 1966); Knockin' On Heaven's Door (from Before The Flood); Shelter From The Storm (from Hard Rain); Slow Train (from Dylan And The Dead); Dignity (from MTV Unplugged). |

"The Best Of Bob Dylan Vols. 1 & 2" - 2CD set in double-width jewel case, Columbia 5020172000 (Australia), Mar 2001:
![]() Columbia 5020172000 (Australia) - front insert scan by Jack from Canada (first release in double-width jewel case) |
This limited edition set was released to coincide with Bob's tour in Australia -
it was deleted on 30 Jun
2001. All older tracks on this album have been digitally remastered using SBM. For details of The Best Of Bob
Dylan and The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see
1997 and 2000
respectively. Thanks to "Les Memory" for the information that The Best Of Bob
Dylan and The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2 (with the bonus disc) had
already been released in Australia. Thanks to Jack from Canada for information
including the correct catalogue number and scans.
R-0250-3 Shelter From The Storm
R-0299 Things Have
Changed R-0049 Positively 4th Street This track is the same version as on the Columbia Disco Teen 66 compilation (see 1966), not the original single, which appears on Masterpieces (see 1978) and Biograph (see 1985). Carsten Baumann informs me that he's checked the version on this 1966 album against the version now included on the remastered Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (US release), and they are the same. This would mean it replaces the single version which is now to be found on CD only on Biograph (it's also on the non-US release The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000). Thanks also to David Goldsmith for confirmation. This stereo version of R-0049 has ceased to be a rarity, and has been moved to the new Released Rarities page! The mono version of R-0049 (not giving them separate R-numbers was a mistake on my part) remains a rarity, and is still listed for 1965 and 1966. R-0273 Dignity Thanks to David Goldsmith for reminding me about the omission of R-0250 from this entry. Despite first reports, this album did not contain the bonus live CD included with the limited UK 2000 release of The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2. However, David says "It is interesting that the jewel case contains a tray for a third disc which makes me wonder if there had been at one stage an intention to include the bonus disc from Vol. 2". The original release of this set (the limited edition) was contained in an old-style double-width jewel case which has space for the third disc. The CDs have their original designs, and show the original catalogue numbers on the discs (Columbia 487924 2 and Columbia 498361 9 respectively). The catalogue number on the front insert spine and rear insert of the set is Columbia 5020172000. The set was later released in a slim jewel case, obviously no longer a limited edition and with no room for the third disc. It had a uniform CD label design, and the inserts and both CDs have the catalogue number Columbia 5020172000 on them). |

R-0359-15 Rise (Bob Dylan/Gabrielle/F.
Unger-Hamilton/Ollie Dagois) The song appears both in audio and video form on this Enhanced CD, which is playable in a PC. Bob doesn't appear in the video. There is also an acoustic version of Rise, but that does not include the Dylan loop. The screen shot of the video menu for some reason shows the window containing the song list as solid black. Another track of special interest is a live cover by Ann Christy of the unreleased Bob Dylan/Helena Springs song Walk Out In The Rain, see my "Unreleased Dylan Songs Directory" W page. Very many thanks to Dr Hanns Peter Bushoff of BMG for all items shown here and his work in compiling the album! Long may he continue with this series! For the first May Your Song Always Be Sung collection, see 1997. For the third May Your Song Always Be Sung collection, see 2003. For a Japanese single disc compilation with tracks from the first and second collections containing R-0486, see 2006. Thanks also to Thomas Michalzik for details and scans of the vinyl boxed set of ten 7" singles - the front of each sleeve has the album graphic with a different coloured background, while the song information from the CD booklet is on the rear. R-0464 Return To Me [Ritorna A Me]
(Danny DiMinno/Carmen Lombardo) R-0696 Return To Me [Ritorna A Me]
(Danny Di Minno/Carmen Lombardo) The first North American recording of this song appears to be by band leader Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians (Carmen Lombardo was Guy Lombardo's cousin), although it doesn't appear to be available on any current Guy Lombardo CD. Bob's version (on CD2, track 6), with the last verse in Italian, was recorded in New York City on 17 Dec 2000 with Larry Campbell and Tony Garnier from Bob's band plus Brian Mitchell on accordion and Shawn Pelton on drums (thanks to Joy Munsey and Olav Langum for the information). Return To Me has also been recorded by Connie Francis, Mantovani, Marty Robbins and Chris Isaac amongst many others. For interest, a couple of previous albums featuring this song are shown below. Thanks to Øyvind Svele for the information that there is also a "acetate" sampler of this album with 25 songs on a single CD-R, including Return To Me. This has a plain white sleeve with the title and tracklisting - no artwork. More details including a scan will be added when available. These are songs from Season 3 of the drama series. The first Sopranos soundtrack album from 1999 contained Gotta Serve Somebody, the regular album track from Slow Train Coming, see International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1996-99. For the DVD/VHS boxed set The Sopranos - The Complete Third Series, containing the episode in which a different edit of Return To Me appears, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 1. Thanks to Bill Hester for details of the Australian release and to Jack from Canada for scans of the Canadian release, which has a different sticker from the US release. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans of the US Super Audio CD (SACD) release which comes in a slipcase. This set can be played only by a small number of high-end DVD players (usually from Sony) or stand-alone SACD players. The material is in SACD stereo only, not 5.1 surround sound. This gives rise to a new rarity (R-0696). The 2004 Golden Stars 3CD set Music You Heard On The Sopranos (below) does not have any Dylan content. |

This is an expanded edition of the 2000 USA release The
Essential Bob Dylan (for which now see

was a rarity at the time. The sleeve notes are in German. This expanded edition was

R-0469-4 Things Have Changed
R-0267-7 Cold Irons Bound - El Rey Theater, Los Angeles, 16 Dec 1997 - same as BDC7 (see Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ), previously released on the European Columbia Love Sick singles, also on a bonus disc included with the Australian tour limited edition of Time Out Of Mind, 1998 (for both see 1998), and on the Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty-Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see above Here this performance is again misdated as 20 Dec 1997, as on the Million Miles and Rare Rock Tracks promo CDs - see 1999 for both. Although Bob did perform Cold Irons Bound on 20 Dec 1997, that performance has never been officially released. Keith Owen tells me that this version is in much better sound quality than on the Japanese album! The four other tracks on this 6-track CD were: The Times They Are A-Changin', Subterranean Homesick Blues, Tangled Up In Blue and Everything is Broken (regular album versions). 30,000 copies were produced which had to be claimed from UK HMV outlets with the coupon from the 26 May 2001 issue of "The Daily Telegraph". "The Daily Telegraph" has also given away a Johnny Cash CD called Johnny Cash: 70th Birthday Sampler (Columbia XPCD 2643), which includes the duet of Girl From The North Country with Bob from Nashville Skyline, and a cover of It Ain't Me, Babe. This is listed in International Albums (Other Artist's Compilations). Thanks to Jim Linwood and Keith Owen for scans. |

Thanks to Pepe from Spain for the information about this variant of the May 2001 Things Have Changed Live & Unreleased USA red promo CD (CSK 16726, see here) with completely different packaging. The graphic design of the CD card sleeve may be familiar to Bob Dylan fans - it's similar to that used on the covers of two books by Clinton Heylin about the bootleg recording industry. Bob Dylan is, of course, the most bootlegged artist in recorded music history! |

R-0250-4 Shelter From The Storm
R-0299 Things Have
Changed R-0049 Positively 4th Street
This track is the same version as on the Columbia Disco Teen 66 compilation (see 1966), not the original single, which appears on Masterpieces (see 1978) and Biograph (see 1985). R-0049 has ceased to be a rarity, and has been moved to the new Released Rarities page! R-0273 Dignity |

This CD accompanies a book of photographs "There Is No Eye" by John Cohen (of the New Lost City Ramblers).
The title "There Is No Eye" is taken from Bob's sleeve notes to Highway
61 Revisited, the last paragraph which starts "you are right john
cohen... [...] there is no eye - there is only a series of mouths - long live
the mouths... [...]"

R-0516 Roll On John
(Traditional) The interview is notorious for the outrageous lies Bob tells the admiring Cynthia about his early life! (These dates are speculative, some say the programme was never actually broadcast.) The CD is described as featuring "classic salt-of-the-earth" tracks like
Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie by Elisabeth Cotten; I Can't Be Satisfied by Muddy Waters
(1959); Man of Constant Sorrow by Roscoe Holcomb (1961)
and John Henry by Bill Monroe (1962). All these songs have been covered by Bob.

Lie from the Stadtpark, Hamburg, Germany 12
Jun 1998 was made available on bobdylan.com
in Nov 1998 (see
Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ) For more details
