Various Artists - "Popular 'Best 101' Vol. 1" -  promo compilation LP, CBS/Sony YAPC 77 (Japan), 1976:

CBS/Sony YAPC 77 (Japan) - front scan by Hanns Peter Bushoff
R-0734 Dylan Selection 1 - five minutes of excerpts from the album versions of Hurricane (1:40), Tangled Up In Blue (1:01), Like A Rolling Stone (1:25) and Blowin' In The Wind (1:02)
Each song is faded out, with a five second gap before the next song starts. The track promotes the four Dylan albums from which the excerpts are taken.

The text is all in Japanese - the Dylan selection is track 4 on Side 2. For two Japanese promo CD compilations with similar selections, see 1987.

Thanks to Hanns Peter Bushoff for information and scans and to Hans Seegers for further information.

CBS/Sony YAPC 77 (Japan) - rear scan by Hanns Peter Bushoff

CBS/Sony YAPC 77 (Japan) - Side 1 scan by Hanns Peter Bushoff (no Dylan)

CBS/Sony YAPC 77 (Japan) - Side 2 scan by Hanns Peter Bushoff (R-0734 is track 4)

"Desire" - Quadraphonic vinyl releases, Columbia PCQ 33893 (USA)/CBS Q 86003 (Spain)/CBS SBPQ 234778 (Australia/NZ), Jan 1976:
For full details of these quadraphonic releases see the Desire page in International Album Releases (Regular).

Columbia PCQ 33893 (USA) - front scan by Olav Langum ("Quadraphonic" at top left)

This album was created using the Columbia "SQ" quadraphonic system and has mistakes in:

R-0124 Joey - at the end of verse three there is a vocal mistake - "to the boss I say he said" - this must have been edited out on the regular release

R-0125 Romance In Durango - again at the end of verse three there is a vocal mistake - "In the face of God will appear" - this too must have been edited out on the regular release. It's also reported there is an outstandingly bad trumpet track that was also removed from the regular stereo release!

Another lesser difference is that in One More Cup Of Coffee there is apparently an intrusive scraping sound just before the third verse, again something that was edited out of the regular stereo release

Rob van Estrik: "The entire album was drastically remixed by Don DeVito from the master session tapes for quadraphonic replay. The resulting LP sounds entirely different from the regular release and is consequently one of the most collectable Dylan albums. Contrary to what was stated in Isis #50, the CD version of the album is NOT the Quadraphonic remix." This is confirmed by Les Kokay, who has sent me a detailed analysis of the differences between the current CD version and the Quadraphonic mix. Thanks to Olav Langum for the scans and further information.

The very rare Dutch release has a similar rear sleeve to the regular release and the same inner sleeve. The Spanish release has a distinctive gold border, and extra printing on the right centre of the front cover "NO. UNO EN USA" [#1 IN USA]. The rear sleeve has the song titles in Spanish and English with pictures of six other quadraphonic releases including Nashville Skyline. Matrix numbers: QAL/P BL 33893-1A. The labels translate the album title as "Deseo" and also have the song titles in Spanish and English. (Information and scans from Hans Seegers.)

CBS Q 86003 (NL) - front scan by Hans Seegers ("Quadraphonic" at bottom centre)

CBS Q 86003 (Spain) - front scan by Hans Seegers (gold border, "Quadraphonic" at top centre)

CBS SBPQ 234778 (Australia/NZ) - front photo by Peter Lindberg ("Quadraphonic" at lower left)

Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the Australian release and Peter Lindberg for photos. This release is in a gatefold sleeve with a laminated front cover and buff quadraphonic SQ labels. It is dated 1975 (the copyright year). Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information that the very rare New Zealand quadraphonic release had the same catalogue number, CBS SBPQ 234778, but had a different cover and labels. Scans will be added as soon as possible.

There must be other international quad releases to list here! None of them were ever reissued as far as I know.

"Mozambique" - stereo/mono 7" promo single, Columbia 3-10298 (USA), 17 Feb 1976:

MozambiqueUSMono.jpg (22757 bytes)
Columbia 3-10298 (USA 7" promo single) - mono side scan by Hans Seegers
R-0455 Mozambique - mono version on B-side of  7" promo single

This unique promo single had the stereo album version from Desire on the A-side, see Promotional Singles 1970-79. The side shown here will have been a mono reduction, since no mono version of the Desire album was released. For a West German stereo 7" promo single and UK and Spanish commercial releases of Mozambique with Oh Sister on the B-side, see US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1974-76. As far as I'm aware there was no US commercial single release.

Information and scan from Hans Seegers.

"Greatest Hits" - stereo LP, CBS 62847 (Greece), 1976/CBS 4630881 (Greece), 1988:

CBS 62847 (Greece) - front scan by Ronald Born

R-0656-2 Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - shorter single edit (2:02)

Hans Seegers reports the front cover is "a bad copy of the 'Leonardo Da Vinci' cover"! This Greek LP has the 1967 UK cover and the UK 12-song tracklist (see International Compilations (Dylan-only) 1960s). This edit first turned up on a Dutch cassette copy in 1974.

The rear cover shows two contemporary Dylan albums - The Basement Tapes and Desire. This was the same on the 1988 release - the cover was not changed. One of the producer credits on cover and Side 2 label is incorrectly shown as "Bob Johnson" instead of Bob Johnston.

The 1976 record has orange/yellow CBS labels with matrix numbers: Side 1- 62.847-A (written), Side 2 - 01-62847-1B-1 HP-GRIEKENLAND (stamped). "Griekenland" is Dutch for Greece, and shows the album was sourced from Holland.

The 1988 record has red labels with a white CBS logo and the same matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62.847-A (written), Side 2 - 01-62847-1B-1 HP-GRIEKENLAND (stamped). The "Bob Johnson" error is repeated on the new Side 2 label.

Information and scans from Ronald Born and Hans Seegers.

R-0093-3 Somebody's Else's Troubles (Steve Goodman) - Bob plays piano and provides harmony vocals - from the 1973 album of the same name (see 1973)

R-0111M-2 Election Year Rag (Steve Goodman) - Bob again appears as "Robert Milkwood Thomas", playing piano and providing harmony vocals (mono version)

This track was recorded at the Somebody Else's Troubles sessions, Sep 1972, and released as a single in Oct 1972. It was also included as a bonus track on the 1990 Sequel UK reissue of the Somebody Else's Troubles album, and is now included as a bonus track on the remastered Buddha CD Steve Goodman, July 1999, see 1999. (Note the 1999 remastered Buddha version of Somebody Else's Troubles doesn't include it.)

This two LP 20-track set was released on CD from Buddah in two versions, one on two CDs with 24 tracks, and another on a single CD with just 19 tracks (catalogue numbers required!). Both of these items included the two tracks above, but neither is now in print. The 1989 compilation The Original Steve Goodman, is a different set, see 1989.

Election Year Rag was released as a 7" single in the USA (Buddah Records BDA-326), see 1972.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Kenneth Robson and Larry Crum for information and scans. Scans of the 1986 release required.

R-0111-2 Election Year Rag (Steve Goodman) - Bob plays piano and provides harmony vocals (stereo version), A-side of single
See above for other occurrences of this performance.

Bob appeared originally as "Robert Milkwood Thomas", but is here credited openly as Bob Dylan. The B-side of this 7" single is City Of New Orleans (no Bob participation).

Thanks to Ronald Born for information about this single and scans. Larry Crum queries whether Election Year Rag on this set is really in stereo (although it says "Stereo" on the label), in which case this would be a further occurrence of R-0111M (the mono version).

Ronald Born's Yugoslavian LP has the regular sleeve, no inner sleeve and only a couple of distinguishing marks: there is a stamp with "ZLATNA" (translation?) on the front cover, and there is a stamped price of KCS 100 (100 Czech Krona), on the rear cover, showing that the LP was also for sale in the then Czechoslovakia. Ronald actually bought it in the then East Germany.

The 1978 Uruguayan RSO release comes with a very thin paper sleeve protected in a plastic wallet. The album title is translated as "No Hay Razón Para Llorar" and the song title as "Lenguaje De Señas".

Thanks to Nol Grint for information about three other European LP releases (scans required):

The 1987 RSO European CD was manufactured in West Germany for the European market. Jean-Pol Hiernaux's Dutch Polydor CD copy is part of the "Eric Clapton Remasters" series.

Bette Midler - "Songs For The New Depression" - album, LP: Atlantic SD 18155 (USA), Atlantic K 50212 (UK), 1976/CD: Atlantic AMCY-114 (Japan), 1990/Atlantic 82784-2 (USA), 1997/BMG Record Club D-111653 (USA), 1997/Atlantic 7567-82784-2 (Germany for Europe), 1997:
Scans of original US LP required!

Atlantic 82784-2 (USA) - 1997 CD front (my copy)
Ronald Born has a promo copy of Atlantic SD 18155 with the sticker shown below on the front cover. It does not have any other indication that it's a promo.

R-0123 Buckets Of Rain - recorded Secret Sound Studios, New York, Oct 1975, Bob shares vocals
For some reason Bette sings "Nuggets Of Rain" instead of "Buckets"...

This song also appeared on the 1978 Atlantic US/UK LP The Best of Bette (see 1978) and an associated UK single (also see 1978).

The UK LP (and presumably the US LP also) has a picture inner sleeve with details of the tracks. The front insert of the 1997 US CD is a single sheet folded into four parts along the centre. The reverse is plain white with the details of the tracks - an excerpt is shown on the right. The US CD design is a reproduction of the old Atlantic LP labels. Thanks to Jack from Canada for his BMG Record Club copy - it has a sticker over the barcode on the rear insert and extra text on the CD itself.

Thanks to Stanislav Tomik for scans of the German CD release - this was sold throughout Europe. The Japanese CD release had an 8-page front insert in English with a second 8-page folded insert with the same information in Japanese - thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. Thanks to Kenneth Robson for scans of the UK LP.

Bob Dylan and The Band performing On A Night Like This from Planet Waves (then on Asylum, part of the same group as Atlantic) appeared on a Japanese promo 7" with In The Mood from Bette Midler on the other side (see Promotional Singles 1970-79). Bette Midler also appears as part of the ensemble USA For Africa on the charity single We Are The World, see 1985.

R-0519 Romance In Durango - slightly shorter version on B-side of 7" vinyl single, fades out before the point at which the segue into Black Diamond Bay occurs on the album

The rear sleeve has the lyrics in English and Japanese of One More Cup Of Coffee, but not Romance In Durango.

Thanks to Keith Venturoni, Manfred Endtner and Larry Crum for the information and Hans Seegers and Kenneth Robson for the scans of all the releases.

"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again"/"Rita May" - 7" promo and commercial stereo singles, Columbia 3-10454 (USA/Canada), Nov 1976:
Information on the different edits of Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again from Stefan:

Columbia 3-10454 (USA) - promo single A-side (R-0128), scan by Hans Seegers (first label variant)
R-0128 Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again: A-side - 3:35 edit of live version from the Hard Rain album: "This starts with a pretty rough cut, then gives us the two first verses ("Ragman" and "Shakespeare"), omits the "Mona" verse, continues with the "Grandpa" verse, a shortened guitar solo, the "Ruthie" verse, and the album version ending with applause faded out."
It's reported that Bob himself supervised this edit!

R-0130 Rita May : B-side - Desire out-take, recorded Jul 1975 (also on the 1978 Australian compilation Masterpieces), lyrics on bobdylan.com
The 1977 UK CBS single had R-0130 as the A-side on the record (but not on the sleeve) and a 1976 French CBS single was issued with the sides reversed, see below.

The US promo single exists in four variations:

  1. White labels with "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" on the right above the catalogue number, and "Produced by Don DeVito" on first line under "Taken from the Columbia Lp: "HARD RAIN" PC 34349" and "and Bob Dylan" on the second line.

  2. White labels with "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" on the right above the catalogue number, and "Produced by Don DeVito and" on the first line and just "Bob Dylan" on the second line.

  3. White labels without  "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" on the right above the catalogue number, but rubber-stamped 'DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE' on two lines on both sides, also with "Produced by Don DeVito" on first line under "Taken from the Columbia Lp: "HARD RAIN" PC 34349" and "and Bob Dylan" on the second line (as variant 1).

  4. Regular labels (first variant) rubber-stamped with  "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" on one line on the B-side only (A-side same as the first commercial single)

The US commercial single exists in two variations:

  1. Regular labels with  "Produced by Don DeVito" on first line under "Taken from the Columbia Lp: "HARD RAIN" PC 34349" and "and Bob Dylan" on the second line (layout as the first promo variant).

  2. Regular labels with "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" on the right above the catalogue number, and "Produced by Don DeVito and" on the first line and just "Bob Dylan" on the second line (layout as the second promo variant).

Thanks to Hans Seegers for detailed information and scans.

"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again"/"Rita May" - 7" singles, CBS 4859 (Mainland Europe)/CBS BA 222268 Australia)/ CBS/Sony 06SP 126 (Japan), Nov 1976:
CBS 4859 is unusual in that there are two different edits of the A-side, and also because the A and B-sides were switched in France!
Information on the different edits from Stefan: For details of the Jan 1977 UK and Spanish releases of this single, see 1977.

CBS 4859 (West Germany/NL/France) - front scan by Yan Friis
All other European countries except Italy - CBS 4859/Australia - CBS BA 222268/Japan - CBS/Sony 06SP 126:

R-0128-2 Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again: A-side - 3:35 edit of live version from the Hard Rain album (as for the USA and Canadian singles above)

Italy - also CBS 4859):

R-0129 Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again: A-side - 3:35 edit of live version from the Hard Rain album: "This starts with a quick fade-in, gives us four out of the six verses we get on the album (1 - 4; "Ragman", "Shakespeare', "Mona", and "Grandpa"), and fades out during the guitar solo."
Thanks to Sam C. Visser for confirming that only the Italian single had this edit.

There was a promo release of the German version with the text "Unverkäufliches Muster [Sample Not For Sale]" stamped on the rear sleeve. The Italian single came in three minor sleeve variations: the first (my copy) has the bottom text on the rear sleeve printed on the fold-over flap; the second has the text printed above the rear fold-over flap. The third variation (not shown) is without fold-over flaps. The Greek and Australian singles came without a picture sleeve.

All singles:

R-0130-2 Rita May : B-side of all singles - Desire out-take, recorded Jul 1975 (also on the 1978 Australian compilation Masterpieces), lyrics on bobdylan.com
The 1977 UK CBS single had R-0130 as the A-side on the record (but not on the sleeve) and a 1976 French version of CBS 4859 was issued with the sides reversed, see below.

Both the Japanese promo and commercial releases have an insert (not shown) with the lyrics. The single-sided metal acetate shown has R-0128 and came in a plain white sleeve.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Kenneth Robson for information and scans. Thanks to Giuseppe Gazerro for the information that a promo copy of this single with Rita May was given away on the front of an issue of the Italian magazine "Music" - this was one of the sleeve variants of the standard single with a label from the magazine.

The Songs Of Bob Dylan (Start Records STDL 20, UK, 1989) with cover of Rita May

R-0130 appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). Some say this sounded like an alternate version, but it's possible it's been remastered. It was also one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other).

A cover of Rita May by Jerry Lee Lewis can be found on the 1989 UK 2LP 32-track compilation The Songs Of Bob Dylan (Start Records STDL 20 - below). In addition, this set contains four still unreleased Dylan songs, but all four of them are only on the vinyl and cassette releases, not the CD release (which was trimmed down to a single CD)!

CBS 4859 (France) - alternate French single with same design as the
German/Dutch/French Memphis Blues Again single, but Rita May as A-side!

The CBS 4859 single was also released in France with Rita May as the A-side! Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the New Zealand release, CBS BA 461735, which also has Rita May as the A-side. The UK single has Rita May as the A-side of the record, but the sleeve shows Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again as the A-side (see 1977).

R-0130-3 Rita May : A-side of single, Desire out-take, recorded Jul 1975 (also on the 1978 Australian compilation Masterpieces), lyrics on bobdylan.com
