five
minutes of excerpts from the album versions of Hurricane (1:40), Tangled Up In Blue
(1:01), Like A Rolling Stone (1:25) and
Blowin' In The Wind (1:02) Each song is faded out, with a five second gap before the next song starts. The track promotes the four Dylan albums from which the excerpts are taken. The text is all in Japanese - the Dylan selection is track 4 on Side 2. For two Japanese promo CD compilations with similar selections, see 1987. Thanks to Hanns Peter Bushoff for information and scans and to Hans Seegers for further information. |

"Desire" - Quadraphonic vinyl releases, Columbia PCQ 33893
(USA)/CBS Q 86003 (Spain)/CBS SBPQ 234778 (Australia/NZ), Jan 1976:
For full details of these quadraphonic
releases see the Desire
page in International Album Releases
(Regular).

This album was created using the Columbia "SQ" quadraphonic system and has mistakes in: R-0124 Joey - at the end of verse three there is a vocal mistake - "to the boss I say he said" - this must have been edited out on the regular release R-0125 Romance In Durango - again at the end of verse three there is a vocal mistake - "In the face of God will appear" - this too must have been edited out on the regular release. It's also reported there is an outstandingly bad trumpet track that was also removed from the regular stereo release! Another lesser difference is that in One More Cup Of Coffee there is apparently an intrusive scraping sound just before the third verse, again something that was edited out of the regular stereo release Rob van Estrik: "The entire album was drastically remixed by Don DeVito from the master session tapes for quadraphonic replay. The resulting LP sounds entirely different from the regular release and is consequently one of the most collectable Dylan albums. Contrary to what was stated in Isis #50, the CD version of the album is NOT the Quadraphonic remix." This is confirmed by Les Kokay, who has sent me a detailed analysis of the differences between the current CD version and the Quadraphonic mix. Thanks to Olav Langum for the scans and further information. The very rare Dutch release has a similar rear sleeve to the regular release and the same inner sleeve. The Spanish release has a distinctive gold border, and extra printing on the right centre of the front cover "NO. UNO EN USA" [#1 IN USA]. The rear sleeve has the song titles in Spanish and English with pictures of six other quadraphonic releases including Nashville Skyline. Matrix numbers: QAL/P BL 33893-1A. The labels translate the album title as "Deseo" and also have the song titles in Spanish and English. (Information and scans from Hans Seegers.) |

Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the Australian release and Peter Lindberg for photos. This release is in a gatefold sleeve with a laminated front cover and buff quadraphonic SQ labels. It is dated 1975 (the copyright year). Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information that the very rare New Zealand quadraphonic release had the same catalogue number, CBS SBPQ 234778, but had a different cover and labels. Scans will be added as soon as possible.
There must be other international quad releases to list here! None of them were ever reissued as far as I know.

single
This unique promo single had the stereo album version from Desire on the A-side, see Promotional Singles 1970-79. The side shown here will have been a mono reduction, since no mono version of the Desire album was released. For a West German stereo 7" promo single and UK and Spanish commercial releases of Mozambique with Oh Sister on the B-side, see US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1974-76. As far as I'm aware there was no US commercial single release. Information and scan from Hans Seegers. |

![]() CBS 62847 (Greece) - front scan by Ronald Born |
R-0656-2 Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - shorter single edit (2:02) Hans Seegers reports the front cover is "a bad copy of the 'Leonardo Da Vinci' cover"! This Greek LP has the 1967 UK cover and the UK 12-song tracklist (see International Compilations (Dylan-only) 1960s). This edit first turned up on a Dutch cassette copy in 1974. The rear cover shows two contemporary Dylan albums - The Basement Tapes and Desire. This was the same on the 1988 release - the cover was not changed. One of the producer credits on cover and Side 2 label is incorrectly shown as "Bob Johnson" instead of Bob Johnston. The 1976 record has orange/yellow CBS labels with matrix numbers: Side 1- 62.847-A (written), Side 2 - 01-62847-1B-1 HP-GRIEKENLAND (stamped). "Griekenland" is Dutch for Greece, and shows the album was sourced from Holland. The 1988 record has red labels with a white CBS logo and the same matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62.847-A (written), Side 2 - 01-62847-1B-1 HP-GRIEKENLAND (stamped). The "Bob Johnson" error is repeated on the new Side 2 label. Information and scans from Ronald Born and Hans Seegers. |

R-0111M-2 Election Year
Rag (Steve Goodman)
This track was recorded at the Somebody Else's Troubles sessions, Sep 1972, and released as a single in Oct 1972. It was also included as a bonus track on the 1990 Sequel UK reissue of the Somebody Else's Troubles album, and is now included as a bonus track on the remastered Buddha CD Steve Goodman, July 1999, see 1999. (Note the 1999 remastered Buddha version of Somebody Else's Troubles doesn't include it.) This two LP 20-track set was released on CD from Buddah in two versions, one on two CDs with 24 tracks, and another on a single CD with just 19 tracks (catalogue numbers required!). Both of these items included the two tracks above, but neither is now in print. The 1989 compilation The Original Steve Goodman, is a different set, see 1989. Election Year Rag was released as a 7" single in the USA (Buddah Records BDA-326), see 1972. Thanks to Hans Seegers, Kenneth Robson and Larry Crum for information and scans. Ronald Born's Yugoslavian LP has the regular sleeve, no inner sleeve
and only a couple of distinguishing marks: there is a stamp with "ZLATNA"
(translation?) on the front cover, and there is a stamped price of KCS
100 (100 Czech Krona), on the rear cover, showing that the LP was also
for sale in the then Czechoslovakia. Ronald actually bought it in the
then East Germany.
The 1978 Uruguayan RSO release comes with a very thin paper sleeve protected in a plastic wallet. The album title is translated as "No Hay Razón Para Llorar" and the song title as "Lenguaje De Señas". |

This song also appeared on the 1978 Atlantic US/UK LP The Best of Bette (see 1978) and an associated UK single (also see 1978). The UK LP (and presumably the US LP also) has a picture inner sleeve with details of the tracks. The front insert of the 1997 US CD is a single sheet folded into four parts along the centre. The reverse is plain white with the details of the tracks - an excerpt is shown on the right. The US CD design is a reproduction of the old Atlantic LP labels. Thanks to Jack from Canada for his BMG Record Club copy - it has a sticker over the barcode on the rear insert and extra text on the CD itself. Thanks to Stanislav Tomik for scans of the German CD release - this was sold throughout Europe. The Japanese CD release had an 8-page front insert in English with a second 8-page folded insert with the same information in Japanese - thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. Thanks to Kenneth Robson for scans of the UK LP. Bob Dylan and The Band performing On A Night Like This from Planet Waves (then on Asylum, part of the same group as Atlantic) appeared on a Japanese promo 7" with In The Mood from Bette Midler on the other side (see Promotional Singles 1970-79). Bette Midler also appears as part of the ensemble USA For Africa on the charity single We Are The World, see 1985. |

R-0130 appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). Some say this sounded like an alternate version, but it's possible it's been remastered. It was also one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other). A cover of Rita May by Jerry Lee Lewis can be found on the 1989 UK 2LP 32-track compilation The Songs Of Bob Dylan (Start Records STDL 20 - below). In addition, this set contains four still unreleased Dylan songs, but all four of them are only on the vinyl and cassette releases, not the CD release (which was trimmed down to a single CD)! |

The CBS 4859 single was also released in France with Rita May
as the A-side! Thanks to Bill Hester for
information about the New Zealand release, CBS BA 461735, which also has
Rita
May as the A-side. The UK single has Rita May
as the A-side of the record, but the sleeve shows Stuck Inside Of Mobile With
The Memphis Blues Again as the A-side (see 1977).
R-0130-3 Rita May
R-0128-3 Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again: B-side - 3:35 edit of live version from the Hard Rain album The French single also exists as a misprint with the B-side blank. Information and scans from Hans Seegers. |
