reissues: Atlantic 82784-2 (USA), 1997; BMG

Scans of original US LP required.
R-0123 Buckets Of Rain
- recorded Secret Sound Studios, New York,
Oct 1975,
Bob shares vocals
For some reason Bette sings "Nuggets Of Rain" instead of "Buckets"...
This song also appeared on the 1978 Atlantic US/UK LP The Best of Bette (see 1978) and an associated UK single (also see 1978).
Ronald Born has a promo copy of the US release of Atlantic SD 18155 with the sticker shown below on the front cover. It does not have any other indication that it's a promo.
The UK LP (and presumably the US LP also) has a picture inner sleeve with details of the tracks. The front insert of the 1997 US CD is a single sheet folded into four parts along the centre. The reverse is plain white with the details of the tracks - an excerpt is shown on the right. The US CD design is a reproduction of the old Atlantic LP labels. Thanks to Jack from Canada for his BMG Record Club copy - it has a sticker over the barcode on the rear insert and extra text on the CD itself.
Thanks to Kenneth Robson for scans of the UK LP and to Stuart Moore for scans of the Australian LP.Thanks to Stanislav Tomik for scans of the German CD release - this was sold throughout Europe.
Bob Dylan and The Band performing On A Night Like This from Planet Waves (then on Asylum, part of the same group as Atlantic) appeared on a 1974 Japanese promo 7" with In The Mood from Bette Midler on the other side (see US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1974). Bette Midler also appears as part of the ensemble USA For Africa on the charity single We Are The World, see 1985.
Bette Midler - "Songs For The New Depression" - album, CD reissues: Atlantic AMCY-114 (Japan), 25 Jul 1990; Atlantic AMCY-4069 (Japan), 15 Oct 1998:
The 1990 Japanese CD release had a black and white obi with red, yellow and white text and price ¥2,348 (¥2,280 before tax). The release date is "90-7-25" (25 Jul 1990). There is an 8-page front insert in English with a second 8-page folded insert with the same information in Japanese. The 1998 Japanese CD release had a dark red and white obi in the "Bette Midler Remaster Collection" series with black, yellow and white text and price ¥1,785 (¥1,700 before tax). The release date is "98-10-15" (15 Oct 1998). The original release date is just shown as "76-1" (Jan 1976) and the withdrawal date is "00-10-14" (14 Oct 2000). There is an 8-page front insert in English and a double-sided folded insert in English and Japanese.

This album was created using the Columbia "SQ" quadraphonic system and has mistakes in: R-0124 Joey - at the end of verse three there is a vocal mistake - "to the boss I say he said" - this must have been edited out on the regular release R-0125 Romance In Durango - again at the end of verse three there is a vocal mistake - "In the face of God will appear" - this too must have been edited out on the regular release. It's also reported there is an outstandingly bad trumpet track that was also removed from the regular stereo release! Another lesser difference is that in One More Cup Of Coffee there is apparently an intrusive scraping sound just before the third verse, again something that was edited out of the regular stereo release Rob van Estrik: "The entire album was drastically remixed by Don DeVito from the master session tapes for quadraphonic replay. The resulting LP sounds entirely different from the regular release and is consequently one of the most collectable Dylan albums. Contrary to what was stated in Isis #50, the CD version of the album is NOT the Quadraphonic remix." This is confirmed by Les Kokay, who has sent me a detailed analysis of the differences between the current CD version and the Quadraphonic mix. Thanks to Olav Langum for the scans and further information. The very rare Dutch release has a similar rear sleeve to the regular release and the same inner sleeve. The Spanish release has a distinctive gold border, and extra printing on the right centre of the front cover "NO. UNO EN USA" [#1 IN USA]. The rear sleeve has the song titles in Spanish and English with pictures of six other quadraphonic releases including Nashville Skyline. Matrix numbers: QAL/P BL 33893-1A. The labels translate the album title as "Deseo" and also have the song titles in Spanish and English. |

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the Australian release and Peter Lindberg for photos. This release is in a gatefold sleeve with a laminated front cover and buff quadraphonic SQ labels. It is dated 1975 (the copyright year). Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information that the very rare New Zealand quadraphonic release had the same catalogue number, CBS SBPQ 234778, but had a different cover and labels. Scans will be added as soon as possible.
There must be other international quad releases to list here! None of them were ever reissued as far as I know.

This unique promo single had the stereo album version from Desire on the A-side, see US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1976. For a West German stereo 7" promo single and UK and Spanish commercial releases of Mozambique with Oh Sister on the B-side, also see US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1976. As far as I'm aware there was no US commercial single release. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scan. |

R-0311-5 With God On Our Side
- with Joan Baez (stereo version), from the
Vanguard album Newport Broadside (Topical Songs), see
1964
This performance is now known to have been recorded during the morning
workshop on 27 Jul 1963 and is not the performance from Joan's set at the
evening concert on 28 Jul 1963 (R-0021), and also not the performance from
the afternoon workshop on 26 Jul 1963 as originally stated here. The real
R-0021 was not actually released until 2005
- for video footage of this performance see
both the
2005 US Columbia/Legacy DVD No Direction Home - Bob Dylan (see
VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3) and the 2007 US Columbia/Legacy DVD The Other Side Of The Mirror: Bob

& DVD 2000s Part 4). The performance released in 1997 on the Joan Baez Live At
Newport CD is from 1964 (R-0253, see 1997). The
performance from the Newport Broadsides (Topical Songs) album (see

R-0122 Sign Language
- Bob duets with Eric Clapton on this version of his otherwise unreleased song, recorded
at Shangri-La Studios, Malibu, CA, late March, 1976
The lyrics of this song have disappeared from bobdylan.com!
This track is also available on a Czech Supraphon Eric Clapton compilation (see 1979), and on Eric's 6LP/4CD boxed set Crossroads, released in 1988 (LP), 1990 (CD), see 1988
In an interview with Roger Gibbons in May 1987 published in the UK Dylan fanzine "The Telegraph", Eric claimed to have co-written this song, providing the chords while Bob provided the words. Eric is not, however, listed on the copyright record.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Kenneth Robson and Stuart Moore for information and scans.
Ronald Born's Yugoslavian LP has the regular sleeve, no inner sleeve and only a couple of distinguishing marks: there is a stamp with "ZLATNA" (translation?) on the front cover, and there is a stamped price of KCS 100 (100 Czech Krona), on the rear cover, showing that the LP was also for sale in the then Czechoslovakia. Ronald actually bought it in the then East Germany.
The 1978 Uruguayan RSO release comes with a very thin paper sleeve protected in a plastic wallet. The album title is translated as "No Hay Razón Para Llorar" and the song title as "Lenguaje De Señas".
Thanks to Nol Grint for information about three other European LP releases (scans required):
The 1987 RSO European CD was manufactured in West Germany for the European market. Jean-Pol Hiernaux's Dutch Polydor CD copy is part of the "Eric Clapton Remasters" series.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Ronald Born and Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information and scans.
Eric Clapton - "No Reason To Cry" - CD: Polydor/RSO [various catalogue numbers] (Japan), 1987-2002:
This album was released on CD in Japan five times as shown below:
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"Mr. D's Collection # 2" - promo stereo 7" EP, CBS/Sony YBPB 3 (Japan), late 1976:
The LP was previously listed for 1976 also. However, Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen have confirmed it is definitely from 1974, so Mr. D's Collection #1 is now listed there. This EP was not released at the same time, but two years later. As can be seen, the rear of the picture sleeve features a 1976 Rolling Thunder Revue photograph. The front picture was originally used for the 1966 Dutch release of an album called Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits but with a non-standard tracklist see International Album Releases (Dylan-only Compilations).
R-0145-2 Mixed Up Confusion - alternate take (probably still
mono), not 1962 US
Columbia 7" single
mono version
See 1974 for comments about the version on Mr. D's Collection # 1, and
see 1962 for details of the four circulating versions of
this song. This take also appears on the 1978 Australian 3LP set Masterpieces (see
1978),
and in an edited form on the original 1985 issue of Biograph (R-0748, see
1985). Many thanks to Les Kokay for all
his information about these alternate takes, and for permission to reproduce his
findings and to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for further information.
R-0054-5 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues- live at
Liverpool, May 1966, B-side of I Want You single (see 1966)
This live version, never released on a regular Columbia album, is also on the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see
1974). the 1978 Australian 3LP set Masterpieces
(see 1978),
the Japanese Mr. D's Collection #3
promo CD (see 1993),
the Japanese Dylan Ga Rock
promo 2CD set (see 1993
and 2010) and the
Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see
2005). All versions are as far as I know still
in mono as originally recorded. Sadly, it does not appear on the B-side
of a withdrawn CBS Spanish EP (see 1972),
because the record was mispressed with It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train
To Cry from Highway 61 Revisited instead!
R-0084-8 George Jackson
- "Big Band" version,
see 1971, lyrics on
bobdylan.com
, also on the Australian 3LP set Masterpieces,
see 1978
Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?: I am now positively informed that the version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? in this set is in mono, and not the stereo version unavailable on commercial CD. The version available as on Masterpieces (1978) and Biograph (1985, remastered CD reissue 1997) and the 2001 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations is also from the original single and still in mono! The stereo version can only be found on a CBS stereo acetate (see 1965), the CBS Spanish 7" EP and single with Positively 4th Street (see 1972) had it in a mispressed version, not stereo as previously reported.
Examples of the tokens are shown above. The Japanese text says "When you send five tokens to the record company you will receive a "17 cm special compact LP" with four non-album Dylan tracks. Send the tokens or the obis from 5 LPs, plus ¥ 350 for postage, to the address below." (17cm = 7"). Thanks to Wil Gielen for information that all the qualifying obis are dated "52-12-31" (This is 31 Dec 1977 as 1977 was Showa Era Year 52 in the Japanese calendar). This date was in fact the closure date for the offer, so Wil believes the EP was released much earlier, perhaps as early as 1976.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen for information and scans.

It was also one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, also see Online Performances (Other). It is now also released on the 2010 version of Dylan Ga Rock (see 2010)
A cover of Rita May by Jerry Lee Lewis can be found on the 1989 UK 2LP 32-track compilation The Songs Of Bob Dylan (Start Records STDL 20). In addition, this set contains four still unreleased Dylan songs, but all four of them are only on the vinyl and cassette releases, not the CD release (which was trimmed down to a single CD)!
"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again"/"Rita May" - 7" singles, Suzy Records/CBS 4859 (Yugoslavia), Nov 1976:
This single was manufactured in Yugoslavia by Jugoton and distributed for CBS by Suzy Records in Zagreb (now Croatia). It has two rear sleeves and two A-side label variants. The first rear sleeve is a generic Suzy design with nine non-Dylan single sleeves, the second has the same design as the West German and Dutch sleeves above with the Suzy logo at top right. The first A-side variant has "STEREO" on the left of the centre hole, while the B-side and the second A-side variant have "STEREO" on the right. There doesn't seem to be a B-side label with the same design as the first A-side.
