Bob Dylan and The Band - Planet Waves
|
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. This page is still incomplete - more entries required. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

Revised 27 January, 2012.
Original US stereo LP, Asylum 7E 1003, 17 Jan 1974, reissued as Columbia PC 37637, 1982. This album was originally called Ceremonies Of The Horsemen and had completely different artwork, see right (taken from "Looking Up Dylan's Sleeves (Part 3)" by Rod MacBeath in "The Telegraph", issue 52, photos by Arie de Reus). Both the original and the final front sleeve paintings are by Bob. The withdrawn rear photo of Bob in a beret is uncredited. The running order of the songs was slightly different as per the pink labelled acetate below. It's also reported another prospective title for the album was Love Songs, although no artwork for that title has surfaced.
The US Asylum Quadraphonic release of this album has a slightly longer second version of Forever Young (R-0115, see 1974).
The album topped the Billboard album charts in the USA on the basis of advance orders, the first of Bob's album to do so.
When Columbia bought the rights to the Asylum albums in 1982 they planned to re-release the album with yet another front sleeve. The photo is also uncredited but Rod MacBeath thinks it might be by Lynn Goldsmith from around 1976. This design was eventually rejected in favour of reusing the Asylum cover. For Electric Lunch, a 1982 US Columbia promo 12" mini-album with selections from Planet Waves and Before The Flood, see International Albums (Dylan-only Compilations) 1980-89.
This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Some titles are available in 5.1 surround sound, but not this one, despite the fact it was released in a quadraphonic mix.
One out-take from this album has been officially released:
The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): Nobody 'Cept You
Vinyl and Tape Releases (1974)
Vinyl and tape releases were originally on Asylum in the USA, with worldwide releases sometimes on other labels such as Island or Elektra. In 1982 rights to release the album were purchased by Sony, so releases after that date are on Columbia, CBS or CBS/Sony (see the separate section below).
Bob Dylan & The Band - "Ashes 'N Sand" - early 12" acetate of "Planet Waves", Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA, on behalf of Asylum Records (USA), 12 Dec 1973:
Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - white label 12" test pressing, Asylum 7E-1003 (USA), Dec 1973:
The record is in a plain white paper sleeve with a US letter sized sheet taped to it. The typed text says the disc is a label copy for Asylum Records, and includes the artist name, album title, track listings and track timings. The matrix numbers have the catalogue number handwritten and "KENDUN" stamped on both sides. (The album was mastered at Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA, see above.)
Thanks to Renaud Depierreux for finding this on eBay and to Arie de Reus for scans.
Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - white label 12" promo LP releases, Asylum 7E-1003 (USA), Dec 1973:
Gerd Rundel has another promo copy with a third variant of white Asylum record labels - "TOUGH MAMA" is again correctly spelled, like promo copy 2 "NOT FOR SALE" is again printed to the left of the centre hole below "SIDE ONE" and the catalogue number is again printed to the right of the centre hole above "STEREO", but the type face and text positioning are different. The record of Gerd Rundel's third copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A9 CTH, Side 2 - 7E-1003 B9 CTH plus “KENDUN” stamped on both sides. The "CTH" code means this copy was pressed at Terre Haute, IN. There is no promo sticker on the front sleeve, but there is a patch of glue at top right which implies it is now missing.
Thanks to Renaud Depierreux and Gerd Rundel for finding a promo copy on eBay with a fourth variant of white Asylum record labels - "TOUGH MAMA" is again correctly spelled, this time the catalogue number is printed to the left of the centre hole under the side number, and "PROMOTIONAL COPY NOT FOR SALE" is printed to the right of the centre hole below "STEREO". The record of Gerd Rundel's fourth copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A1, Side 2 - 7E-1003-B1 plus “KENDUN” stamped on both sides.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Asylum 7E 1003 (USA)/Asylum
7ES 1003 (Canada), 17 Jan 1974:
The album is sub-titled Moonglow: Cast-Iron Songs & Torch Ballads.
For an early acetate and a promo release of this album from Dec 1973, see above.
Information from Tim Dunn: "I have a US vinyl copy of Planet Waves (Asylum 7E-1003) with the title variation "Touch Mama" on the label. The matrix etching is "7E-1003-A-4" (my other opened Asylum copy has "7E-1003 A1" in the matrix)." A scan of the misprinted label from Hans Seegers is shown below. Note that on the label the catalogue number "7E-1003-A" is on the right, on David Burgess' copy (not shown) it's on the left.
So far eight variants of 7E-1003 have been reported to me as follows:
Promo with white Asylum labels with "è 1974 Asylum Records" on one line and catalogue number on right, matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A-Z CSM (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003-B I B-3 CSM B3 (written), 7E-501(scratched), both sides - KENDUN (printed). Front sleeve: black on transparent sticker with "BOB DYLAN" plus white on brown sticker with "NOT FOR SALE" (as promo copy above). Michael Palinkas has a copy with these labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - "T1 7E-1003 A-9-CTH" "KENDUN", Side 2 - "T1 7E-501 (scratched) B-8 CTH" "KENDUN". As above, the "CTH" code means this was pressed at Terre Haute, IN.
Nate Nash has a copy of the commercial release with the same matrix numbers as Michael Palinkas' copy, with standard Asylum labels with "è 1974 Asylum Records" on one line and the catalogue number on right below "STEREO" (illustrated with the misprint).
Jeremy Mayle has a copy of the commercial release, the labels of which have the catalogue number on right above "STEREO", "è 1974 Asylum Records" on one line, and no misprint (shown above).
Commercial release with standard Asylum labels with "è 1974 Asylum Records" on 2 lines, catalogue number on right and “TOUCH” instead of “TOUGH”. Matrix numbers: Side 1 - 1 7E-1003 A3 CSM (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003-B 1 B-3 CSM (written), 7E-501 (scratched), both sides: KENDUN (printed), back cover: golden insert as shown above. Renaud Depierreux also has a commercial copy with the "TOUCH MAMA" misprint, the crinkled texture sleeve as the Australian copy described below and matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E – 1003 AZ CSM (written) KENDUN (printed), Side 2 - 7E – 1003-B 1 (written) 7E-501 (scratched) B2 CSM (written) KENDUN (printed). The "CSM" code means this was pressed at Santa Maria, CA.
Commercial release with cut out Asylum labels with catalogue number on left. Matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003A/7E-1003B-1 SP 01 (written), Side 2 - 7E-501 B SP (scratched), both sides -KENDUN (printed). Front sleeve: black on transparent sticker with "BOB DYLAN", back cover: golden insert. Peter Lindberg's copy has the following matrix numbers: "Side 1 - 7E-1003A (written) KENDUN (stamped) catalogue number on left of label (with Tough); Side 2 - 7E-1003-B1 (written) 0-2 (faintly written) tiny T with a v under it then even smaller C then A 3 EX-SP also very small (written) 7E-501 B-1 (scratched out) then SP (written) KENDUN (stamped) catalogue number on the left of label." According to Magnus Peterson Olsson the sleeve has the same crinkled texture as the Australian copy described below. The "SP" code means this was pressed at Specialty Record Corp, Olyphant, PA.
Commercial release with cut out Asylum labels with catalogue number on right below "STEREO". Matrix number: Side 1- 7E-1003 A.3 CSM B 4 (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003 B 1 B-3 CSM A 2 (written) 7E-501 (scratched), both sides - KENDUN (stamped). The back cover comes with a white on golden insert over the black/white back cover with almost the same text.
Commercial release with Asylum labels, "7E-1003-A/B" on right above "STEREO". Matrix numbers: Side 1- 7E-1003 A.7 CP (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003-B-7 CP (written), 7E-501 B-7 CP (scratched), both sides - KENDUN (stamped). Renaud Depierreux also has a commercial copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 as before,, Side 2 - 7E-501 B-7 CP (lightly scratched – barely noticeable) "KENDUN". This copy has no front "BOB DYLAN" sticker, the right hand top corner cut off on both the sleeve and the insert, while the sleeve has a much more marked crinkled texture than other copies.
Commercial release EQ-1003 with Asylum labels. Matrix numbers: Side 1- EQ-1003 A/B J L (written). Front sleeve: smaller "MOONGLOW" drawing with black edges, back cover: black on white.
Thanks to David Burgess, Hans Seegers, Jean-Pol Hiernaux and Jeremy Mayle for information and scans. Thanks to Patrick Helfrich for scans of the Canadian release which has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7ES-1003A-1A, Side 2 - 7ES-1003-B-1A.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - Quadraphonic LP, Asylum EQ-1003 (USA), 1974:
This Quadraphonic release contains rarities, so is also listed in 1974.
This LP was encoded using the Quadradisc system, different from the Sony SQ quadraphonic system used by Columbia, as shown above. The inner sleeve is printed with an illustrated article by Ivan Berger describing the Quadradisc system. The labels are similar to the standard US Asylum vinyl release but with the Quadradisc logo. Although the catalogue number on the album sleeve is EQ-1003, on the record labels it's QD-1003.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP, Island ILPS 9261 (UK), 17 Jan 1974:
My record has a plain white sleeve and white Island "Caribbean island" labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - ILPS 9261 A-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-A-1 (handwritten), ESR-TC-1-9-74 (handwritten), Side 2 - ILPS 9261 B-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-B-1 (handwritten). ("7E 1003" was the US Asylum catalogue number, "1-9-74" was the pressing date (9 Jan 1974).
The record of Manuel's copy is the same as mine, with identical record labels and matrix numbers: Side 1 - ILPS 9261 A-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-A-1 (written), ESR-TC-1-9-74 (written), Side 2 - ILPS 9261 B-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-B-1 (written).
Also above is an advertisement for the Island release of Planet Waves from the Jan 1974 issue of the UK magazine "Let It Rock", provided by David Burgess.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - vinyl promo and commercial albums, Asylum AS 53 003 (West Germany/NL), 1974:
Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge, Asylum AS 853003 (West
Germany)/Asylum K 853003 (Italy), Jan 1974:
I'm told there was also a Quadraphonic 8-track version of the album -
if you have it, please let me know. Before The Flood was also released by Asylum as a two
8-track set, but as far as I know in stereo only.
Like many 8-tracks, the original album running order is changed to split the material into four approximately equal parts, with the West German and Italian releases being different from each other, and also from the US and Canadian releases above! Note that unlike the US Columbia 8-tracks, these cartridges (white for Germany, orange for Italy), have a single label which folds over the front and back. These cartridges do not come in a slipcase like the US releases, but just have a removable plastic clip over the exposed tape end. The German running order is:
Program 1: On A Night Like This; Forever Young (Part 1); Wedding Song
Program 2: Going, Going, Gone; Tough Mama; Hazel
Program 3: Something There Is About You; You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye
Program 4: Forever Young (Part 2); Dirge
The Italian running order is:
Program 1: On A Night Like This; Going,
Going, Gone; Tough Mama
Program 2: Forever Young; Dirge
Program 3: Hazel, Something There Is About You; Forever Young
Program 4: You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye; Wedding Song
