Dylan (1973)
|
This page is part of a new section of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included
on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here
and not in the yearly Promo sections.
This page is still incomplete - more entries required. For releases of this
album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International
Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -

Original US stereo LP, Asylum 7E 1003, 17 Jan 1974, reissued as Columbia PC
37637, 1982.
The US Asylum Quadraphonic release of this album has a slightly longer second
version of Forever Young (R-0115, see 1974).
For Electric Lunch, a 1982 US Columbia promo 12" mini-album
with selections from Planet Waves and Before The Flood, see
Promotional Albums (Dylan-only) 1980-89.
This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in
Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SACD. This is playable both in stereo on an
ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SACD player or a DVD player that
also plays SACDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Some titles are
available in 5.1 surround sound, but not this one, despite the fact it was
released in a quadraphonic mix.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Ashes 'N Sand" - early 12" acetate of "Planet Waves",
Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA, on behalf of Asylum Records (USA), 12 Dec 1973:

Side 1 scan by Keith Venturoni (note track order) |
Apart from the title ("Ashes & Sand" was the name of Bob's
production company set up in the Sixties), the only difference between
this acetate and the released album is that the first two songs on Side 1
are switched. Going, Going, Gone is the first track, followed by On A
Night Like This.
Thanks to Keith Venturoni for information and scans. |

The album is sub-titled Moonglow: Cast-Iron Songs & Torch Ballads.
For an early acetate and a promo release of this album from Dec 1973, see above.

Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - front scan with sticker by David Burgess |
The copy illustrated is
still in the shrink-wrap, and has a sticker on the front sleeve with
"BOB DYLAN" so that buyers would not be confused! The artwork front and back and the sleeve notes are by Bob.
The sleeve notes by Bob were judged to be too "obscene" for
public display, and the album sleeve was covered by a paper outer sleeve that had the rest of the front and back
designs and text but hid the notes. The rear paper sleeve was gold with
white text, the album rear itself was white with black text and a gold
border. Richard Manuel's name is mis-spelled "Manual"!
Information from Tim Dunn: "I have a US vinyl copy of Planet
Waves (Asylum 7E-1003) with the title variation "Touch Mama" on the
label. The matrix etching is "7E-1003-A-4" (my other opened Asylum copy
has "7E-1003 A1" in the matrix)." A scan of the misprinted
label from Hans Seegers is shown below. Note that on the label the
catalogue number "7E-1003-A" is on the right, on David Burgess' copy it's
on the left.
Thanks to David Burgess, Hans Seegers and Jean-Pol Hiernaux for scans.

Like many 8-tracks, the original album running order is changed to
split the material into four approximately equal parts, with the US and
Canadian releases being different! The US release is in a dark blue/purple
cartridge in a light blue/dark blue slipcase with two separate labels.
Hans Seegers' copy shown is still sealed. The Canadian release has a yellow
cartridge in an orange slipcase with a wraparound label. The US running order is: Program 1: On A Night Like This; Going,
Going, Gone; Tough Mama
Program 2: Dirge, Forever Young
Program 3: Forever Young, Hazel, Something There Is About You
Program 4: You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye; Wedding Song

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo compact cassette, Columbia PCT 37637 (USA), 1982:

Columbia PCT 37637 (USA) - insert scan by Jack from Canada (reverse is
blank) |
This cassette was released after the album rights were transferred to
Columbia - I have no information about Asylum compact cassette tape releases
(see their 8-track tape releases above). The artwork is absolutely minimal,
just a crop of the album cover and a tracklist. Thanks to Jack from Canada
for information and scans. |

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - Quadraphonic LP, Asylum EQ-1003
(USA), 1974:

Asylum EQ-1003 (USA) -
front scan by Hans Seegers |
This Quadraphonic release contains rarities, so is also
listed in 1974.
This LP was encoded
using the Quadradisc system, different from the Sony SQ quadraphonic
system used by Columbia, as shown above. The inner sleeve is printed with
an illustrated article by Ivan Berger describing the Quadradisc system.
The labels are similar to the standard US Asylum vinyl release but with
the Quadradisc logo. Although the catalogue number on the album sleeve is
EQ-1003, on the record labels it's QD-1003.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for
information and scans. |

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - vinyl album, Island ILPS 9261 (UK), 17 Jan 1974:

Island ILPS 9261 (UK) - front (paper sleeve and actual album cover)
(my copy) |
This album was released by Island Records in the UK, licensed from
Asylum. In the
UK, as in the USA, the sleeve notes were judged to be "obscene", and the album
was also sold with a paper outer sleeve. Sadly, I tore off the paper sleeve to see
what the fuss was about, and thus reduced the value of my copy by an
enormous amount! With hindsight, I should have bought two copies - one to
keep intact, and one to play... The sleeve was actually printed in Holland, although mainland Europe
releases were on the Asylum label.
The record has a plain white sleeve and white Island "Caribbean island" labels with
matrix numbers:
Side 1 - ILPS 9261 A-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-A-1 (written), ESR-TC-1-9-74
(written)
Side 2 - ILPS 9261 B-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-B-1 (written)
("7E 1003" was the US Asylum catalogue number,
"1-9-74" was the pressing date (9 Jan 1974).

away! It has a flap to tuck into the sleeve opening, with the text "PRINTED

Waves from the Jan 1974 issue of the UK magazine "Let It
Rock", provided by David Burgess.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge, Island Y81 9261 (UK), Jan
1974:

Island Y81 9261 (UK) - front of slipcase, scan by Hans Seegers |
Hans Seeger's copy has a pink cartridge and is still sealed in a slipcase. The reverse of the slipcase just has the Island
logo. The running order is: Programme A: On a Night Like This; Going,
Going, Gone; Tough Mama.
Programme B: Hazel; Something There Is About You.
Programme C: Forever Young; Dirge.
Programme D: You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye; Wedding Song.
Patrick Helfrich's copy has a white cartridge and a Dolby noise reduction
"Double-D" logo on the end label which is missing from Hans' Seegers' copy.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge, Asylum AS 853003 (West
Germany)/Asylum K 853003 (Italy), Jan 1974:
I'm told there was also a Quadraphonic 8-track version of the album -
if you have it, please let me know. Before The Flood was also released by Asylum as a two
8-track set, but as far as I know in stereo only.

Asylum AS 853003 (West Germany) - front scan by Zanza |
Like many 8-tracks, the original album running order is changed to split
the material into four approximately equal parts, with the West German and
Italian releases being different from each other, and also from the US and
Canadian releases above! Note that unlike the US
Columbia 8-tracks, these cartridges (white for Germany, orange for
Italy), have a single label which folds
over the front and back. These cartridges do not come in a slipcase like
the US releases, but just have a removable plastic clip over the exposed
tape end. The German running order is: Program 1: On A Night Like This; Forever Young (Part 1); Wedding Song
Program 2: Going, Going, Gone; Tough Mama; Hazel
Program 3: Something There Is About You; You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye
Program 4: Forever Young (Part 2); Dirge
The Italian running order is: Program 1: On A Night Like This; Going,

this time on plain card. It also had a CBS "Nice Price" insert

folded card. This copy, which must be a promo given out in West Germany, also has stars on the record labels above the catalogue
number to the right of the centre hole. Both gold rear paper outer sleeves have
the text "Previously available on Asylum 7E-1003". The gold sleeve is

Columbia CH 90339 (USA/Canada) - outside of digipak (my copy) |
This release is housed in a three-fold digipak and and contains
both a CD version and an SACD stereo version. There's no 5.1 surround sound
version despite the fact the album was also released in quadraphonic sound.
There is no booklet.. The outside of the
digipak has an unpublished picture of Bob from 1974. The inside of the
digipak includes Bob's "obscene" sleeve notes and another unpublished
picture. The SACD design reproduces the Columbia
stereo vinyl label used in 1982 (when the album was transferred to
Columbia).
The copy illustrated was distributed from Canada, and has the same
sticker on the outside of the shrink-wrap as the one illustrated for The
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information about the
2003 Japanese SACD release. It has
a black/gold/blue/brown on white obi with price
¥2,520 - scans required. |
