Dylan (1973)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

This page is still incomplete - more entries required. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Original US stereo LP, Asylum 7E 1003, 17 Jan 1974, reissued as Columbia PC 37637, 1982. This album was originally called Ceremonies Of The Horsemen and had completely different artwork, see right (taken from "Looking Up Dylan's Sleeves (Part 3)" by Rod MacBeath in "The Telegraph", issue 52, photos by Arie de Reus). Both the original and the final front sleeve paintings are by Bob. The withdrawn rear photo of Bob in a beret is uncredited. The running order of the songs was slightly different as per the pink labelled acetate below. It's also reported another prospective title for the album was Love Songs, although no artwork for that title has surfaced.

The US Asylum Quadraphonic release of this album has a slightly longer second version of Forever Young (R-0115, see 1974).

The album topped the Billboard album charts in the USA on the basis of advance orders, the first of Bob's album to do so.

When Columbia bought the rights to the Asylum albums in 1982 they planned to re-release the album with yet another front sleeve. The photo is also uncredited but Rod MacBeath thinks it might be by Lynn Goldsmith from around 1976. This design was eventually rejected in favour of reusing the Asylum cover. For Electric Lunch, a 1982 US Columbia promo 12" mini-album with selections from Planet Waves and Before The Flood, see International Albums (Dylan-only Compilations) 1980-89.

This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Some titles are available in 5.1 surround sound, but not this one, despite the fact it was released in a quadraphonic mix.

One out-take from this album has been officially released:

The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): Nobody 'Cept You

Vinyl and Tape Releases (1974)

Vinyl and tape releases were originally on Asylum in the USA, with worldwide releases sometimes on other labels such as Island or Elektra. In 1982 rights to release the album were purchased by Sony, so releases after that date are on Columbia, CBS or CBS/Sony (see the separate section below).

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Ashes 'N Sand" - early 12" acetate of "Planet Waves", Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA, on behalf of Asylum Records (USA), 12 Dec 1973:

Apart from the title ("Ashes & Sand" was the name of Bob's production company set up in the Sixties), the only difference between this acetate and the released album is that the first two songs on Side 1 are switched. Going, Going, Gone is the first track, followed by On A Night Like This.

Thanks to Keith Venturoni for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - white label 12" test pressing, Asylum 7E-1003 (USA), Dec 1973:

Typed information sheet taped to record sleeve - scan by Arie de Reus

This test pressing from eBay has blue generic labels from Columbia's pressing plant at Pitman, NJ. There is no text on the record labels except "Side 1" and "Side 2" in blue marker pen.

Side 1 scan by Arie de Reus

Side 2 scan by Arie de Reus

The record is in a plain white paper sleeve with a US letter sized sheet taped to it. The typed text says the disc is a label copy for Asylum Records, and includes the artist name, album title, track listings and track timings. The matrix numbers have the catalogue number handwritten and "KENDUN" stamped on both sides. (The album was mastered at Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA, see above.)

Thanks to Renaud Depierreux for finding this on eBay and to Arie de Reus for scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - white label 12" promo LP releases, Asylum 7E-1003 (USA), Dec 1973:

Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - front with stickers, scan by Hans Seegers (promo copy 1)

These albums are promo copies of the commercially released album with the regular sleeve but with white Asylum labels.

The first example labels have the catalogue number on the right as the first commercial variant below with the "TOUCH MAMA" misprint. "NOT FOR SALE" is printed to the left of the centre hole below the side number and the catalogue number is printed to the right of the centre hole below "STEREO". The "BOB DYLAN" sticker as below is centre top over the album title and there is also a promo sticker on the front sleeve. The rear sleeve is the same as the commercial copy below.

Gerd Rundel has a second promo copy with a different Elektra front sticker and white Asylum record labels. "TOUGH MAMA" is correctly spelled, but to the right of the centre hole the catalogue number is above "STEREO". The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A-7 CP, Side 2 - 7E-1003 B-6 CP plus “KENDUN” stamped on both sides. The "CP" code means this copy was pressed at the Columbia pressing plant, Pitman, NJ.

Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (promo copy 4)

Gerd Rundel has another promo copy with a third variant of white Asylum record labels - "TOUGH MAMA" is again correctly spelled, like promo copy 2 "NOT FOR SALE" is again printed to the left of the centre hole below "SIDE ONE" and the catalogue number is again printed to the right of the centre hole above "STEREO", but the type face and text positioning are different. The record of Gerd Rundel's third copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A9 CTH, Side 2 - 7E-1003 B9 CTH plus “KENDUN” stamped on both sides. The "CTH" code means this copy was pressed at Terre Haute, IN. There is no promo sticker on the front sleeve, but there is a patch of glue at top right which implies it is now missing.

Thanks to Renaud Depierreux and Gerd Rundel for finding a promo copy on eBay with a fourth variant of white Asylum record labels - "TOUGH MAMA" is again correctly spelled, this time the catalogue number is printed to the left of the centre hole under the side number, and "PROMOTIONAL COPY NOT FOR SALE" is printed to the right of the centre hole below "STEREO". The record of Gerd Rundel's fourth copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A1, Side 2 - 7E-1003-B1 plus “KENDUN” stamped on both sides.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Asylum 7E 1003 (USA)/Asylum 7ES 1003 (Canada), 17 Jan 1974:
The album is sub-titled Moonglow: Cast-Iron Songs & Torch Ballads. For an early acetate and a promo release of this album from Dec 1973, see above.

PWUSAFront.jpg (29089 bytes)
Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - front scan with sticker by David Burgess
The US copy illustrated is still in the shrink-wrap, and has a sticker on the front sleeve with "BOB DYLAN" so that buyers would not be confused! The artwork front and back and the sleeve notes are by Bob. The sleeve notes by Bob were judged to be too "obscene" for public display, and the album sleeve was covered by a paper outer sleeve that had the rest of the front and back designs and text but hid the notes. The rear paper sleeve was gold with white text, the album rear itself was white with black text and a gold border. Richard Manuel's name is misspelled "Manual"!

Information from Tim Dunn: "I have a US vinyl copy of Planet Waves (Asylum 7E-1003) with the title variation "Touch Mama" on the label. The matrix etching is "7E-1003-A-4" (my other opened Asylum copy has "7E-1003 A1" in the matrix)." A scan of the misprinted label from Hans Seegers is shown below. Note that on the label the catalogue number "7E-1003-A" is on the right, on David Burgess' copy (not shown) it's on the left.

So far eight variants of 7E-1003 have been reported to me as follows:

  1. Promo with white Asylum labels with "è 1974 Asylum Records" on one line and catalogue number on right, matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A-Z  CSM (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003-B  I  B-3 CSM  B3 (written), 7E-501(scratched), both sides - KENDUN (printed). Front sleeve: black on transparent sticker with "BOB DYLAN" plus white on brown sticker with "NOT FOR SALE" (as promo copy above). Michael Palinkas has a copy with these labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - "T1 7E-1003 A-9-CTH" "KENDUN", Side 2 -  "T1 7E-501 (scratched) B-8 CTH" "KENDUN". As above, the "CTH" code means this was pressed at Terre Haute, IN.

  2. Nate Nash has a copy of the commercial release with the same matrix numbers as Michael Palinkas' copy, with standard Asylum labels with "è 1974 Asylum Records" on one line and the catalogue number on right below "STEREO" (illustrated with the misprint).

  3. Jeremy Mayle has a copy of the commercial release, the labels of which have the catalogue number on right above "STEREO", "è 1974 Asylum Records" on one line, and no misprint (shown above).

  4. Commercial release with standard Asylum labels with "è 1974 Asylum Records" on 2 lines, catalogue number on right and “TOUCH” instead of “TOUGH”. Matrix numbers: Side 1 - 1  7E-1003 A3 CSM (written), Side 2 -  7E-1003-B 1 B-3 CSM (written), 7E-501 (scratched), both sides: KENDUN (printed), back cover: golden insert as shown above. Renaud Depierreux also has a commercial copy with the "TOUCH MAMA" misprint, the crinkled texture sleeve as the Australian copy described below and matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E – 1003 AZ CSM (written) KENDUN  (printed), Side 2 - 7E – 1003-B 1 (written) 7E-501 (scratched) B2 CSM (written) KENDUN (printed). The "CSM" code means this was pressed at Santa Maria, CA.

  5. Commercial release with cut out Asylum labels with catalogue number on left. Matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003A/7E-1003B-1 SP 01 (written), Side 2 - 7E-501 B SP (scratched), both sides -KENDUN (printed). Front sleeve: black on transparent sticker with "BOB DYLAN", back cover: golden insert. Peter Lindberg's copy has the following matrix numbers: "Side 1 - 7E-1003A (written) KENDUN (stamped) catalogue number on left of label (with Tough); Side 2 - 7E-1003-B1 (written) 0-2 (faintly written) tiny T with a v under it then even smaller C then A 3 EX-SP also very small (written) 7E-501 B-1 (scratched out) then SP (written) KENDUN (stamped) catalogue number on the left of label." According to Magnus Peterson Olsson the sleeve has the same crinkled texture as the Australian copy described below. The "SP" code means this was pressed at Specialty Record Corp, Olyphant, PA.

  6. Commercial release with cut out Asylum labels with catalogue number on right below "STEREO". Matrix number: Side 1- 7E-1003 A.3 CSM B 4 (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003 B  1  B-3 CSM   A 2 (written) 7E-501 (scratched), both sides - KENDUN (stamped). The back cover comes with a white on golden insert over the black/white back cover with almost the same text.

  7. Commercial release with Asylum labels, "7E-1003-A/B" on right above "STEREO". Matrix numbers: Side 1- 7E-1003 A.7 CP (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003-B-7 CP (written), 7E-501 B-7 CP (scratched), both sides - KENDUN (stamped). Renaud Depierreux also has a commercial copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 as before,, Side 2 - 7E-501 B-7 CP (lightly scratched – barely noticeable) "KENDUN". This copy has no front "BOB DYLAN" sticker, the right hand top corner cut off on both the sleeve and the insert, while the sleeve has a much more marked crinkled texture than other copies.

  8. Commercial release EQ-1003 with Asylum labels. Matrix numbers: Side 1- EQ-1003 A/B J L (written). Front sleeve: smaller "MOONGLOW" drawing with black edges, back cover: black on white.

Thanks to David Burgess, Hans Seegers, Jean-Pol Hiernaux and Jeremy Mayle for information and scans. Thanks to Patrick Helfrich for scans of the Canadian release which has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7ES-1003A-1A, Side 2 - 7ES-1003-B-1A.

Asylum ET-81003 (USA) - front of slipcase, scan by Hans Seegers

Like many 8-track releases, the original album running order is changed to split the material into four approximately equal parts, with the US and Canadian releases being different! The US release is in a dark blue/purple cartridge in a light blue/dark blue slipcase with two separate labels. Hans Seegers' copy shown is still sealed. The Canadian release has a yellow cartridge in an orange slipcase with a wraparound label.

This Quadraphonic release contains rarities, so is also listed in 1974.

This LP was encoded using the Quadradisc system, different from the Sony SQ quadraphonic system used by Columbia, as shown above. The inner sleeve is printed with an illustrated article by Ivan Berger describing the Quadradisc system. The labels are similar to the standard US Asylum vinyl release but with the Quadradisc logo. Although the catalogue number on the album sleeve is EQ-1003, on the record labels it's QD-1003.

PWIslandUKFront.JPG (29397 bytes)
Island ILPS 9261 (UK) - front (both copies)
This album was released by Island Records in the UK, licensed from Asylum. In the UK, as in the USA, the sleeve notes were judged to be "obscene", and the album was also sold with a paper outer sleeve. Sadly, I tore off the paper sleeve to see what the fuss was about, and thus reduced the value of my copy by an enormous amount! With hindsight, I should have bought two copies - one to keep intact, and one to play...

The sleeve of my copy was printed in Holland by Euro-Albums Holland BV. Thanks to Patrick Helfrich for the scan of the paper outer sleeve that I threw away! It has a flap to tuck into the sleeve opening, with the text "PRINTED BY EURO-ALBUMS HOLLAND BV" on the flap. Manuel Garcia Jara's copy has a different sleeve from mine that was printed in England by Robor Limited. The paper outer sleeve was also presumably printed in England as it does not have the Dutch text on the flap. It is also missing the gold border.

My record has a plain white sleeve and white Island "Caribbean island" labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - ILPS 9261 A-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-A-1 (handwritten), ESR-TC-1-9-74 (handwritten), Side 2 - ILPS 9261 B-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-B-1 (handwritten). ("7E 1003" was the US Asylum catalogue number, "1-9-74" was the pressing date (9 Jan 1974).

The record of Manuel's copy is the same as mine, with identical record labels and matrix numbers: Side 1 - ILPS 9261 A-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-A-1 (written), ESR-TC-1-9-74 (written), Side 2 - ILPS 9261 B-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-B-1 (written).

Hans Seeger's copy has a pink cartridge and is still sealed in a slipcase. The reverse of the slipcase just has the Island logo. The running order is:

Program B: Hazel; Something There Is About You.
Program C: Forever Young; Dirge.
Program D: You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye; Wedding Song.

Patrick Helfrich's copy has a white cartridge and a Dolby noise reduction "Double-D" logo on the end label which is missing from Hans' Seegers' copy.

Asylum AS 53 003 (West Germany) - front with sticker, scan by Rene Kejlskov Jørgensen
The West German promo album has a standard sleeve but the record has white promo labels. The front sleeve has a white sticker with "BOB DYLAN in white in a red rectangle with rounded ends. The West German commercial record has labels with the blue/white clouds design. Rene Kejlskov Jørgensen's commercial record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WEA59401-A, Side 2 - WEA59401-B.

The record for the Dutch commercial release was made in Holland but came in the West German commercial sleeve. The test pressing shown has a stock label on Side 1 without added text, the Side 2 label is blank.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge, Asylum AS 853003 (West Germany)/Asylum K 853003 (Italy), Jan 1974:
I'm told there was also a Quadraphonic 8-track version of the album - if you have it, please let me know. Before The Flood was also released by Asylum as a two 8-track set, but as far as I know in stereo only.

Like many 8-tracks, the original album running order is changed to split the material into four approximately equal parts, with the West German and Italian releases being different from each other, and also from the US and Canadian releases above! Note that unlike the US Columbia 8-tracks, these cartridges (white for Germany, orange for Italy), have a single label which folds over the front and back. These cartridges do not come in a slipcase like the US releases, but just have a removable plastic clip over the exposed tape end. The German running order is:

Program 1: On A Night Like This; Forever Young (Part 1); Wedding Song
Program 2: Going, Going, Gone; Tough Mama; Hazel
Program 3: Something There Is About You; You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye
Program 4: Forever Young (Part 2); Dirge

The Italian running order is:

Program 1: On A Night Like This; Going, Going, Gone; Tough Mama
Program 2: Forever Young; Dirge
Program 3: Hazel, Something There Is About You; Forever Young
Program 4: You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye; Wedding Song

Asylum AS 53.003 (France) - front scan by Manuel Garcia Jara
This French release is notable for having "BOB DYLAN" on the front sleeve in the same type face and size as the album title, which is shifted to the right (this design was also used for the very rare Lebanese release, see below). The sleeve was printed in France by Graphicolor. The record labels are the blue/white clouds Asylum design. They do not say the record was made in France, but have the French SACEM copyright organisation logo and also "33 TOURS" (RPM) as the playing speed.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP, Asylum/Suzy Records WEA 53003 (Yugoslavia), 1974:

Asylum/Suzy Records WEA 53003 (Yugoslavia) - front scan by Manuel Garcia Jara
This was the first Dylan album to be released in Yugoslavia, previously albums had been imported from Italy or Holland, although a few Dylan singles had been released in the country. Like the later CBS Yugoslavian releases this album was made in Yugoslavia by Suzy Records of Zagreb (now Croatia) for Asylum Records. The sleeve has a "BOB DYLAN" sticker. The record labels are the blue/white clouds Asylum design. The labels have the logo of the "SAKOJ" Yugoslavian copyright organisation. The artists' organisation "SAKOJ" (Union of Composers of Yugoslavia) became "SOKOJ" (Federation of Organisations of Composers of Yugoslavia) in 1976, which appears on the labels of Dylan releases after that date. The matrix numbers of the copy shown are: Side 1 - WEA 59401-A PF, Side 2 - WEA 59401-B PF. Suzy Records also released Before The Flood in Yugoslavia, although in very limited quantities.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - promo and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, Warner Bros/Melodi Records 7E-1003 (Turkey), 1974, 1975:

Warner Bros/Melodi Records 7E-1003 (Turkey) - front scan by Manuel Garcia Jara (1974 and 1975 releases)
These albums were made in Turkey by Melodi Records for Warner Bros. Both 1974 and 1975 releases have the same sleeve. The front sleeve has "BOB DYLAN" printed, not a sticker. The album was released under licence from Warner Bros Records of West Germany, which is why it has the logo of the German copyright organisation GEMA on the record labels. Although there are no promo markings, only 300 of the 1974 albums were pressed and it was not sold commercially, just distributed in late 1974 to a few radio stations and magazines. The second version was released commercially in Turkey in 1975.

The records have a generic Melodi inner sleeve and Warner Bros palm tree picture labels. Both copies shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WEA 59401-A PF, Side 2 - WEA 59401-B PF. On the Side 1 label Tough Mama is misspelled "Tough Fama" and Something There Is About You is misprinted as "Some Thing There Is About You". The promo copy has very noticeable darker colour labels than the commercial release, making the text less visible. All text except the tracklist is in different positions from the commercial copy.

This very rare album was made in Lebanon for Asylum Records by SLD (Société Libanaise du Disque S.A.L.). Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - promo and commercial stereo vinyl LPs, Elektra EKC 6036 (South Africa); Elektra/Teal EKC 6036 (Rhodesia/Mozambique), 1974:

Elektra EKC 6036 (South Africa) - front scan by Arie de Reus (commercial release)
These Elektra releases have "Bob Dylan" printed in hand lettering matching the album title at top left. None of the copies has a censored rear sleeve.

The promo copy from what was then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) is incredibly rare and has a reversed image front and rear sleeve. This is the only known occurrence of this version of the sleeve worldwide. It has white promo labels and was manufactured by the Teal Record Company for Elektra. This promo copy is said to have been made specially for the Elektra record company head and as far as I know it was not released commercially in Rhodesia. Arie de Reus says he and a Danish collector have the only known copies.

The commercial release from the neighbouring country of Mozambique is also incredibly rare. It was manufactured for Elektra Records by Teal Discos LDA, Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, which was a Portuguese colony until 25 Jun 1975. It has a very thin outer sleeve without spine lettering and a Teal Discos generic inner sleeve which is plain on the other side. It has matrix numbers; Side 1 - EKC 6036A, Side 2 - EKC 6036B.

Thanks to Arie de Reus and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

Vinyl and Tape Releases (1982 onwards)

In 1982 rights to release the album were purchased by Sony, so releases after that date are on Columbia, CBS or CBS/Sony. The original vinyl and tape releases on Asylum, Elektra or Island are in the section above.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP reissue, Columbia PC 37637 (USA), Apr 1982:

PlanetWavesUSFront.jpg (29320 bytes)
Columbia PC 37637 (USA) - front scan by Stuart Moore
This is the Columbia re-release of the original Asylum album (the transfer of rights took place in 1982). For Electric Lunch, a 12" Columbia US promotional album with three tracks each from Planet Waves and Before The Flood released in 1982, see International Albums (Dylan-only Compilations) 1980-89. The front sleeve has a "THE NICE PRICE" sticker. The gold rear sleeve omits the "obscene" sleeve notes and the record has red Columbia labels.

Arie de Reus has discovered a rejected design for the front sleeve with a sepia photo of Bob and the original artwork as a thumbnail on the rear of the sleeve. It was finally rejected in favour of reusing the original artwork.

Thanks to Stuart Moore and Arie de Reus for information and pictures.

Columbia PCT 37637 (USA) - insert scan by Jack from Canada (reverse is blank)
This cassette was released after the album rights were transferred to Columbia - I have no information about Asylum compact cassette tape releases (see their 8-track tape releases above). The artwork is absolutely minimal, just a crop of the album cover and a tracklist.

Thanks to Jack from Canada for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo cassette release, CBS 40-32154 (UK), 1982:

CBS 40-32154 (NL) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Nol Grint
This cassette was released after the album rights were transferred to CBS in 1982. The cassette is light grey with printed text in black, there are no paper labels. For some bizarre reason Tough Mama is repeated at the end of Side 2 but not listed, both sides of the insert and Side 2 of the cassette have been annotated by the original owner.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP reissue, CBS 32154 (NL), 14 Apr 1982:

CBS 32154 (NL) - front scan by Patrick Helfrich (first variant)

This is the CBS re-release of the original Asylum album (the transfer of rights took place in 1982). The cover is made in Holland (as was the UK cover not yet shown), and it has a gold rear paper outer sleeve as the original release above. Patrick Helfrich has two copies - the first has a sticker with "BOB DYLAN" and "32154" at the upper left of the front sleeve and a German promo "Plattenpass" folded card. This copy, which must be a promo given out in West Germany, also has stars on the record labels above the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole. Both gold rear paper outer sleeves have the text "Previously available on Asylum 7E-1003". The gold sleeve is noticeably lighter on the second copy than on the first, which has no front sticker and no stars on the labels. The numbers in the capsule below the catalogue number on the rear paper outer sleeve are also different - the first has "CB 211" and the second has "CB 231" (above).

The stars on the first variant record labels are shown on the left above.

The German promo record card with the first copy of this release was issued by the CBS Press Department in Frankfurt am Main on 14 Apr 1982. It has the track details on the back and a description of the album and its background in German on the inside, as well as details of five other Dylan albums of the 1978-1981 period immediately preceding this re-release on CBS.

The release date is shown as "09-9-30" (30 Sep 2009), the original release date as "74-1-17" (17 Jan 1974) and the withdrawal date as "10-3-29" (29 Mar 2010). It's not actually a Blu-ray disc as it says on the sticker, but it is made using Blu-ray technology.
