Dylan (1973)
|
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. This album is of course the exception to that, as it's the only one in the Dylan catalogue that has been deleted! The album is still listed on the bobdylan.com albums page. Although I've submitted a correction, A Fool Such As I is still wrongly listed on bobdylan.com as having been written by Buford Abner - it was actually written by Bill Trader, see here. The 3CD set released in Oct 2007 is also called Dylan! |

Original US stereo LP, Columbia PC 32747, 16 Nov 1973 This album was issued by Columbia without Bob's authorisation during the period when Bob was with Asylum/Island, and consists of entirely of covers, out-takes from Self Portrait and New Morning. It has never been issued on CD in the USA or UK, although CD versions were released in Japan in 1990 and mainland Europe in 1991. A cassette version is still available in the USA, but it appears to have been deleted in the UK. An earlier version of the album dated 5 Oct 1973, has a different track listing: Side 1: Mr. Bojangles (R-0101); The Ballad Of Ira Hayes (R-0104); A Fool Such As I (R-0099); Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (R-0096); Mary Ann (R-0103). Side 2: Runnin' (Floyd Tillman); Sarah Jane (R-0098); Lily Of The West (R-0097); Alligator Man (Floyd Chance/Jimmy "C" Newman). Tracks 1 and 4 are as yet unreleased. Thanks to Peter Stone Brown for identifying the likely source of Track 1 as the 1956 country song by Floyd Tillman. The order of the released album is: Side 1: Lily Of The West; Can't Help Falling In Love (R-0100); Sarah Jane; The Ballad Of Ira Hayes. Side 2: Mr. Bojangles; Mary Ann; Big Yellow Taxi (R-0102); A Fool Such As I; Spanish Is The Loving Tongue. Because the album is deleted, it is also listed in 1973. |

Vinyl and Tape Releases
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia PC 32747 (USA), 16 Nov 1973; Columbia PC 32747 (USA), 1990s:
For more information about the incorrect crediting of A Fool Such As I to "B. Abner", see here. Gil Lamont has a later copy of PC 32747 with no red sticker on the front and matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747-2E, Side 2 - P-BL 32747-2A. The label on Side 2 is different in that R-0099 is correctly credited to "B. Trader". Bob Mazer's copy of PC 32747 is probably the same as Gil's, and the label on Side 1 is also different in that R-0098 is credited to "Arr. Bob Dylan". It has no credit at all on the label above.
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux, Arie de Reus, Eddie Cockrell, Ulf Gyllenspetz, David Burgess, Moise Potié and Gerd Rundel for information and pictures.
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia PC 32747 (USA for export), 1973, 1975:
Dr. Walter Roedl's album was bought in Austria in 1975. It is a standard Columbia US release except for a white sticker which folds over the top corners of the front and rear sleeves with the CBS logo and the Dutch catalogue number "CBS S 69 049". It has the red sticker from the US release above promoting A Fool Such As I and several other tracks. It has a contemporary 1975 CBS inner sleeve advertising such albums as Dylan and Blood On The Tracks. Unlike other export copies, the record labels are standard Columbia US design. Side 1 has a first release label with Sarah Jane uncredited, while Side 2 has a second release label with A Fool Such As I credited to "B. Trader". The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747-2C, Side 2 - P BL 32747-2D.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke and Dr. Walter Roedl for information and scans.

"Dylan" - 8-track stereo tape cartridge release, Columbia PCA 32747 (USA/Canada), Nov 1973:
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia PC 32747 (Canada), 16 Nov 1973:
Lars M. Banke has a copy of the Canadian release bought in Sweden with CBS stickers on the labels. He also has a copy of the Canadian release with Swedish seal across the sleeve opening and taped rings obscuring the Columbia logos on the record labels ("MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD" is still visible). The Swedish text says that if the seal is broken the album will be replaced only if it was faulty when bought.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

Hans Seegers has an acetate of CBS 69049 (UK), with plain white labels
and matrix numbers S 69049 A 1/B 1.
The 1973 inner sleeve of the UK album is generic, with a "magazine" called "THE INNER SLEEVE". Both sides of the sleeve contain illustrations of CBS albums of the time, including Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, see International Albums (Regular), plus albums by Roger McGuinn (see below), Janis Joplin and Hammond/Bloomfield/Dr. John. The rear inner sleeve shows the then CBS postal address of CBS Records, 28/30 Theobalds Road, London WC1. |

This album was released three times in Britain: first in 1973 with old-style labels (my copy), then in 1975 as CBS 32286 with new-style orange/yellow labels (Mick Robinson's copy) and then in 1984 as CBS 32286 with red labels (Hans Seegers' copy). John Martin has a copy of CBS 69049 with the same labels as mine but with a different inner sleeve, "THE INNER SLEEVE Issue 5", featuring Johnny Cash, Johnny Mathis, Johnny Nash, Barbra Streisand, etc. I assume CBS UK used whichever version of the sleeve was current when records were sent out to dealers.
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases: CBS S 69049 (NL); "Club Sonder Auflage" edition, CBS S 63476 (NL for West Germany), 1973; stereo LP re-release: CBS 32286 (NL), 1980s:
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases: CBS S 69049 (Spain), 1973 (twice); CBS 32011 (Spain), 1982; CBS 32286 (PR) (Spain), 1985, re-released 1988:

The 1988 release has the same sleeve as the 1985 release without the "PRECIO REDONDO" front sticker. The record again has red CBS labels, but was this time made in Spain by Tecnodisco S.A. for Discos CBS S.A. The copy shown again has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32286-A0, Side 2 - 32286-B0.
Thanks to Wayne Carr and Manuel Garcia Jara for information and scans.
"Dylan" - stereo compact cassette: CBS 40-32011
(Spain), 1982:
This is the equivalent release to the
CBS 32011 1982 vinyl release above.
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl test pressing and LP release: CBS S 69049 (Greece), 1973:
The Greek commercial release has dark red labels, not the usual CBS orange. For the Greek release of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid see International Albums (Regular).
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases: CBS S 69049 (Israel), 1973:
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS SBP 234429 (Australia), CBS SBP 474158 (New Zealand), Nov 1973:
The Australian LP was initially released with 1960s style orange CBS labels, and later with the 1970s/1980s style orange/yellow CBS labels. The sleeves were identical. A Fool Such As I is correctly credited to "B. Trader".
Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. There are two variants of the orange labels, the second has the "è" ("P" in a circle = "Published") missing from the text to the right of the centre hole before "1973 CBS, Inc.".
There are also two variants of the orange/yellow labels, released in the mid-1970s and late 1970s. The second has longer copyright text along the bottom of the labels. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. Side 2 of the first variant is the same as Side 2 of the second variant - I assume there must be copies of the mid-1970s Side 2 label with the shorter text.
Thanks to Donald Randles for details of the Australian release and to Bill Hester for details of the New Zealand release (scans required). Thanks to Stuart Moore and Manuel Garcia Jara for further information and scans.

This album has a white rear sleeve with the tracklisting and the CBS logo. The record has stamped matrix numbers A/BL-32747 1SX. R-0099 is correctly credited to "B. Trader".
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS/Sony SOPL 236 (Japan), 1974; reissue: CBS/Sony 25AP 285 (Japan), 1976, re-released early 1977 and late 1977:
CBS/Sony 25AP 285 - this 1976 reissue has a booklet and a red, white and black side obi with price ¥2,500 and showing Bob's latest release, Hard Rain on the reverse. The record has orange/cream CBS/Sony labels and stamped matrix numbers 25AP 285-A1/B1. R-0099 is again correctly credited to "B. Trader". 25 AP 285 was reissued in early 1977 with a red-brown side obi, and again in late 1977 with a wider red-brown side obi giving Dylan 1978 Japanese tour dates (the tour where Bob Dylan At Budokan was recorded).
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Ulf Gyllenspetz and Wil Gielen for information and pictures.
"Dylan" - stereo compact cassette releases, CBS 40-69049 (UK), late 1970s; CBS 40-32286 (UK), 1982:
These cassette releases are undated, but they have Dolby noise reduction, not present on early cassettes. The tracks are reordered in that Mr. Bojangles is now the last track on Side 1 and The Ballad Of Ira Hayes is the first track on Side 2, the opposite way round to the album. Lily Of The West is misspelled "Lilly Of The West" every time it occurs: twice on the front of the inserts, in the tracklist on the inside of the inserts and on both Side 1s. A Fool Such As I is correctly credited to "B. Trader" on the inside of the inserts. The cassette cases are light grey with blue or black printed text, there are no labels.
The first release has the original catalogue number of CBS 69049, so probably dates from the late 1970s. The second release must date from the 1980s as it comes from after the catalogue number change from CBS 69049 to CBS 32286 (see UK vinyl releases above).
Thanks to Manuel Garcia Jara and Wayne Carr for information and scans.
"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases: CBS/Suzy 69049 (Yugoslavia); 1984, re-released 1988:
|
|
The 1984 Yugoslavian release of CBS 69049 was released by Suzy Records of Zagreb (now Croatia) on behalf of CBS, and has "CBS 69049 SOKOJ è 1984 CBS Inc." on the labels. It has orange/yellow CBS labels. A Fool Such As I is incorrectly credited to "B. Abner, Le Fevre Sing Pub Corp." (this was actually the correct publishing company for the song of the same name written by Buford Abner, see authorship note here). Spanish Is The Loving Tongue is incorrectly shown as "Spanish Is The Loving Langue". The 1988 Yugoslavian release of CBS 69049 was also released by Suzy Records. The rear sleeve has new text printed vertically at centre right, but the 1984 text can be seen faintly underneath. The record was pressed by Jugoton and has red CBS labels. A Fool Such As I is still incorrectly credited to "B. Abner, Le Fevre Sing Pub Corp." but Spanish Is The Loving Tongue is now shown correctly. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - ULP 87 A, Side 2 - ULP 87 B. Thanks to Grzegorz J. (Greg) from Poland and Manuel Garcia Jara for information and scans. |

CD Releases
"Dylan" - stereo CD, Sony Records SRCS 6163 (Japan), 1990/"Bob Dylan (A Fool Such As I)"/Columbia COL CD 32286 (NL), 1991:
This CD is now long out of print, so is very scarce - rumour has it that Bob himself ordered it to be deleted. It may still be available from import sources. Dylan was available in the USA in the 1990s on cassette only. The album is not available in the UK in any form as it has been deleted from the Columbia "Nice Price" catalogue. Because of its scarcity, all CD copies command high prices when they become available in places like eBay!
In "The Bridge" issue 13, Autumn 2002, Alan Hoaksey lists three CD releases of this album, the two above and one for the USA as Columbia CK 32747 from Apr 1983. I have no confirmation of such a release, although "PC 32747" was the catalogue number of the original US release. Both John Howells and Bob Stacy have told me Columbia vinyl albums were reissued in the 1980s with "CK" prefixes replacing the previous "PC" prefixes, and that Dylan CD releases did not commence until Infidels in 1984, with earlier albums being released on CD for the first time between 1984 and 1990. Therefore 1983's "CK 32747" was probably a vinyl reissue - confirmation required!
Jack from Canada's copy was bought in the UK and has a "MADE IN ENGLAND" sticker on the rear of the jewel case - thanks to Hans Seegers for confirming this is incorrect. All European copies were sourced from Heemstede, Holland.
Thanks to Ian Stewart, Raoul Verolleman, Mark Goedegebuur and Wayne Carr for information about the Japanese CD and scans. Special thanks to Christine Consolvo for the copy of the Dutch CD!
