Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid 1973
Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid Original Soundtrack
(1973)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

This album is of course the exception to that, as it's the only one in the Dylan catalogue that has been deleted! The album is still listed on the bobdylan.com albums page. Although I've submitted a correction, A Fool Such As I is still wrongly listed on bobdylan.com as having been written by Buford Abner - it was actually written by Bill Trader, see here. The 3CD set released in Oct 2007 is also called Dylan!

Original US stereo LP, Columbia PC 32747, 16 Nov 1973

This album was issued by Columbia without Bob's authorisation during the period when Bob was with Asylum/Island, and consists of entirely of covers, out-takes from Self Portrait and New Morning. It has never been issued on CD in the USA or UK, although CD versions were released in Japan in 1990 and mainland Europe in 1991. A cassette version is still available in the USA, but it appears to have been deleted in the UK.

An earlier version of the album dated 5 Oct 1973, has a different track listing:

Side 1: Mr. Bojangles (R-0101); The Ballad Of Ira Hayes (R-0104); A Fool Such As I (R-0099); Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (R-0096); Mary Ann (R-0103).

Side 2: Runnin' (Floyd Tillman); Sarah Jane (R-0098); Lily Of The West (R-0097); Alligator Man (Floyd Chance/Jimmy "C" Newman). Tracks 1 and 4 are as yet unreleased. Thanks to Peter Stone Brown for identifying the likely source of Track 1 as the 1956 country song by Floyd Tillman.

The order of the released album is:

Side 1: Lily Of The West; Can't Help Falling In Love (R-0100); Sarah Jane; The Ballad Of Ira Hayes.

Side 2: Mr. Bojangles; Mary Ann; Big Yellow Taxi (R-0102); A Fool Such As I; Spanish Is The Loving Tongue.

For details of all versions of this album, see 1973.

Vinyl and Tape Releases

"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia PC 32747 (USA/Canada), 16 Nov 1973/Columbia PCT 32747 (USA), 1990s:

Columbia PC 32747 (USA) - radio station promo copy with sticker and timing strip, photo by Ulf Gyllenspetz

The acetate of the US album is a double-sided 12" disc in an "audiodisc" generic sleeve. The promo copy shown has a radio station timing strip on the front sleeve.

Lars M. Banke has a copy of the Canadian release bought in Sweden with a Swedish seal across the sleeve opening and taped rings obscuring the Columbia logos on the record labels ("MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD" is still visible). The Swedish text says that if the seal is broken the album will be replaced only if it was faulty when bought. Lars also has a US copy bought in Sweden with "CBS" stickers over the Columbia logos.

Gil Lamont has a later copy of PC 32747 with no red sticker on the front and matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747-2E, Side 2 - P-BL 32747-2A. The label on Side 2 is different in that R-0099 is correctly credited to "B. Trader". Bob Mazer's copy of PC 32747 is probably the same as Gil's, and the label on Side 1 is also different in that R-0098 is credited to "Arr. Bob Dylan". It has no credit at all on the label above.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux, Arie de Reus, Eddie Cockrell, Ulf Gyllenspetz, David Burgess, Lars M. Banke and Moise Potie for information and pictures.

Dylan73USTapeFront.jpg (25342 bytes)
Columbia 1R1 6147 (USA) - front scan by Hans Seegers
This album was also released in the USA on stereo reel-to-reel tape, running at 3¾" per second. The "DYLAN" text on the front of the box is proportionally the same size as on the UK front cover, but positioned differently.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"Dylan" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge, Columbia PCA-32747 (Canada), Nov 1973:

Columbia PCA-32747 (Canada) - front scan by Jack
8-track was a continuous tape cartridge format, with four stereo "programs" per tape.

Thanks to Jack from Canada for information and scan.

"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS 69049 (UK), 1973; stereo LP reissue - CBS 32286 (UK), 1975 and 1984:

CBS 69049 (UK) - note the "DYLAN" is much larger than on the US sleeve (my copy)

Hans Seegers has an acetate of CBS 69049 (UK), with plain white labels and matrix numbers S 69049 A 1/B 1.

The 1973 inner sleeve of the UK album is generic, with a "magazine" called "THE INNER SLEEVE". Both sides of the sleeve contain illustrations of CBS albums of the time, including Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, see International Albums (Regular), plus albums by Roger McGuinn (see below), Janis Joplin and Hammond/Bloomfield/Dr. John. The rear inner sleeve shows the then CBS postal address of CBS Records, 28/30 Theobalds Road, London WC1.

CBS 32286 (UK) - 1975 Side 2 label scan by Mick Robinson (A Fool Such As I is correctly credited to "Trader")

CBS 32286 (UK) - 1984 Side 1 label scan by Hans Seegers (Lily Of The West is misspelled "Lilly")

CBS 32286 (UK) - 1984 Side 2 label scan by Hans Seegers (A Fool Such As I is correctly credited to "Trader")

This album was released three times in Britain: first in 1973 with old-style labels (my copy), then in 1975 as CBS 32286 with new-style orange/yellow labels (Mick Robinson's copy) and then in 1984 as CBS 32286 with red labels (Hans Seegers' copy). John Martin has a copy of CBS 69049 with the same labels as mine but with a different inner sleeve, "THE INNER SLEEVE Issue 5", featuring Johnny Cash, Johnny Mathis, Johnny Nash, Barbra Streisand, etc. I assume CBS UK used whichever version of the sleeve was current when records were sent out to dealers.

"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP: CBS S 69049 (NL/Greece/Yugoslavia/Israel); "Club Sonder Auflage" edition, CBS S 63476 (West Germany), 1973; stereo LP re-release: CBS 32286 (NL), 1980s:

CBS S 69049 (NL/West Germany) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (small "DYLAN" like the US release)
Holland: Thanks to Patrick Helfrich and Gerd Rundel for scans of the Dutch release CBS S 69049. Wayne Carr's 1980s copy is renumbered CBS 32286 and has plain red CBS labels. On the front sleeve the US logo with catalogue number PC 32747 has been whitened out. Thanks to Rinus for scans of the original 1973 release with plain orange labels - this also has "Columbia" whitened out on the front sleeve and "Made In Holland" on the rear sleeve and labels.

West Germany: Thanks again to Patrick Helfrich and Gerd Rundel for scans of the rare West German "Club Sonder Auflage [Club Special Edition]" release CBS S 63476, which was made in Holland and has 1960s-style CBS orange labels. It again has "Columbia" whitened out on the front sleeve. Gerd Rundel's copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69049-A (handwritten) P AL 32747-2C (stamped), Side 2 - S 69049-B (handwritten), no stamped second matrix number.

Greece: CBS 609049: Thanks to Hans Seegers for the very rare Greek test pressing and commercial release of Dylan. Bob's releases were generally banned in Greece under the military junta regime from 1967 to 1974 - this one was allowed, presumably because they considered it contained no political material. For the Greek release of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid see International Albums (Regular). Note the Greek commercial release has dark red labels, not the usual CBS orange.

Israel: Anneke Derksen's copy has Hebrew stickers on the front and rear of the sleeve and plain orange CBS labels.

Yugoslavia: the 1984 Yugoslavian release of CBS 69049 shown above was released by Suzy Records of Zagreb on behalf of CBS, and has "CBS 69049 SOKOJ è 1984 CBS Inc." on the labels. It has 1980s style orange/yellow CBS labels. A Fool Such As I is incorrectly credited to "B. Abner, Le Fevre Sing Pub Corp." (this was actually the correct publishing company for the song of the same name written by Buford Abner, see authorship note here). Thanks to Grzegorz J. (Greg) from Poland for scans.

"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP: CBS S 69049 (Spain), 1973:

CBS S 69049 (Spain) - front scan by Wayne Carr
The record was manufactured by Discos CBS, S.A., Madrid and has very dark orange CBS labels. As in Greece, Bob's records were banned in Spain during the Franco regime - this was allowed presumably because it contains no political material. The album had a CBS Spain insert listing current albums dated 31 Dec 1973.

Thanks to Wayne Carr for information and scans.

This album has orange on red CBS/Sony labels with "Made in Malaysia". The record has written matrix numbers: "A/BL-32747 J900/899 ***". R-0099 is correctly credited to "B. Trader". Note the distinctive black border on the rear sleeve, which lists the distributors in Singapore and Malaysia.

Dylan1973AusFront.jpg (121472 bytes)
CBS SBP 234429 (Australia) - front scan by Stuart Moore (all releases)
The Australian LP was initially released with 1960s style orange CBS labels, and later with the 1970s/1980s style orange/yellow CBS labels. The sleeves were identical. A Fool Such As I is correctly credited to "B. Trader". There are two variants of the orange/yellow labels, released in the mid-1970s and late 1970s. the second has longer copyright text along the bottom of the labels. Side 2 of the first variant is the same as Side 2 of the second variant - I assume there must be copies of the mid-1970s Side 2 label with the shorter text.

Thanks to Donald Randles for details of the Australian release and to Bill Hester for details of the New Zealand release (scans required). Thanks to Stuart Moore for further information and scans.

CD Releases

"Dylan" - stereo CD, Sony Records SRCS 6163 (Japan), 1990/"Bob Dylan (A Fool Such As I)"/Columbia COL CD 32286 (NL), 1991:

Columbia COL CD 32286 (NL) - front (my copy)
The CD release of this 1973 album was renamed Bob Dylan (A Fool Such As I) in Europe, but remained Dylan in Japan. Sony Records SRCS 6163 (Japan) had a black, red, white, yellow and blue obi with the price ¥1,800. There was also a Japanese promo CD - scans required. Note the picture on the front of the Japanese CD is a wider crop of the LP cover than the one on the Dutch release. Also, the tracklisting appears on the front of the Dutch release but not on the front of the Japanese insert. The rear inserts are completely different - the Japanese insert uses the rear album cover picture, while the Dutch insert is plain. The Japanese release has a lyrics booklet in English and Japanese.

This CD is now long out of print, so is very scarce - rumour has it that Bob himself ordered it to be deleted.  It may still be available from import sources. Dylan was available in the USA in the 1990s on cassette only. The album is not available in the UK in any form as it has been deleted from the Columbia "Nice Price" catalogue. Because of its scarcity, all CD copies command high prices when they become available in places like eBay!

In "The Bridge" issue 13, Autumn 2002, Alan Hoaksey lists three CD releases of this album, the two above and one for the USA as Columbia CK 32747 from Apr 1983. I have no confirmation of such a release, although "PC 32747" was the catalogue number of the original US release. Both John Howells and Bob Stacy have told me Columbia vinyl albums were reissued in the 1980s with "CK" prefixes replacing the previous "PC" prefixes, and that Dylan CD releases did not commence until Infidels in 1984, with earlier albums being released on CD for the first time between 1984 and 1990. Therefore 1983's "CK 32747" was probably a vinyl reissue - confirmation required!

Jack from Canada's copy was bought in the UK and has a "MADE IN ENGLAND" sticker on the rear of the jewel case - thanks to Hans Seegers for confirming this is incorrect. All European copies were sourced from Heemstede, Holland.

Thanks to Ian Stewart, Raoul Verolleman, Mark Goedegebuur and Wayne Carr for information about the Japanese CD and scans. Special thanks to Christine Consolvo for the copy of the Dutch CD!
