Bob Dylan and The Band - Before The Flood
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

Original US stereo 2LP set, Asylum AB 201, 20 Jun 1974, reissued as Columbia CG 37661, 1982 (later as KG 37661). The album was recorded live with The Band at various locations in the USA in Jan and Feb 1974. The photo on the front and all the inner sleeve photos are by Barry Feinstein. |

Thanks to Steven Fant for the scan of the round leather All Areas Access Pass, around 3⅞" in diameter. Thanks to Stuart Moore for scans of the Warner Bros US Songbook.
Even though a wide range of songs were performed during the tour, including non-album songs Hero Blues (twice) and Nobody ‘Cept You (eight times), the tracklist of the double album sticks to 1960s favourites.
The order of the album reflected the order of the shows: a set by Bob and The Band followed by a set by The Band on their own, an intermission, a set by Bob solo, a second set by The Band on their own, and then a finale by Bob and The Band.

Vinyl and Tape Releases (1974)
Vinyl and tape releases were originally on Asylum in the USA, with worldwide releases sometimes on other labels such as Island or Elektra. In 1982 rights to release the set were purchased by Columbia, so vinyl and tape releases after that date are on Columbia, CBS or CBS/Sony (see the separate section below). There is a mystery concerning track 1 on Side 1, Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine). On the 1974 Asylum LP release labels where track times are given it's listed as 3:16, and many 1974 Asylum 7" singles worldwide have this 3:16 timing on the A-side. However, the two CD copies I own have the track at 4:15 and 4:18, and the 1974 US 7" singles show the track at 3:38, while the Canadian and Japanese 7" singles time it at 3:40. Are there actually two different vinyl versions of this track, with the 3:16 version being an edit? Stuart Moore has listed to all his UK and Australian vinyl and tape LP versions and all play at between 4:08 and 4:18 with the intro and audience clapping at the end seeming the same.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - test pressings for 2LP set, Asylum AB-201 (USA), May 1974:
Gerd Rundel has a third test pressing made at the Columbia plant in Pitman, NJ, which comes in plain white sleeves. All the record labels are the same without text, but the labels are blue/green instead of white. Arie de Reus has a test pressing of Planet Waves with the same labels. The records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB 201 A7 CP, Side 2 - AB 201 D7 CP, Side 3 - AB 201 B7 CP, Side 4 - AB 201 C7 CP. Each side also has “KENDUN” stamped.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Arie de Reus for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - promo 2LP sets, Asylum AB-201 (USA), 20 Jun 1974:

Again they have "KENDUN" stamped on each side.Variant 3: Side 1 - AB-201-A2 CSM, Side 2 - AB-201-B3-CSM, Side 3 - AB-201-C2 CSM, Side 4 - AB-201-D3-CSM (the "CSM" code shows the record was pressed at the Columbia pressing plant in Santa Maria, CA).
(Like Planet Waves, this album was mastered at Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA, founded by recording engineer Kent Duncan.)
Thanks to Ulf Gyllenspetz for information and to Gerd Rundel and Steven Fant for further information and scans.

Manuel García Jara has a copy with "CTH" labels where the text to the right of the centre hole is aligned differently on Sides 2-4: "(AB-201-B/C/D-CTH" above "STEREO" is positioned further to the left. This copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - T2 AB-201-A-4 CTH KENDUN, Side 2 - T1 AB-201-AB4 CTH KENDUN, Side 3 - T1 AB-201-C-4 CTH KENDUN, Side 4 - T2 AB-201-D4 CP (crossed out) CTH KENDUN.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - two 8-track stereo cartridge release, Asylum AT-8201 (USA), Jun 1974:
Asylum AT-8201 (USA) - front of slipcase 1, scan by Manuel García Jara |
This release is on two separate tape cartridges, each in a light blue/dark blue slipcase with front and back cut-outs to display the cartridge. The tape cartridges are also dark blue with the same front picture and a single rear/end white label with black text. Unlike many 8-track releases, the original album running order is not changed, but instead Endless Highway, It’s All Right, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) and Highway 61 Revisited are split across programs. As the two Dylan tracks are rarities, they are also listed in 1974. |

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - single stereo cassette release, Asylum AC-5201 (USA), late 1970s (?):
Asylum AC-5201 (USA) - top of cassette with catalogue number, scan by Gerd
Rundel
This US cassette release of Before The Flood is, unlike the 8-track release above, on one cassette only. The musicians and engineers are listed on the inside of the insert. The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. It has Dolby noise reduction. The catalogue number “05201” is stamped in the top of the cassette. There is also a white Asylum sticker with purple text on the end of the black cassette case.
Tracklisting (compare with Asylum Canadian cassette release below):
Side 1: Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine); Lay, Lady, Lay; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door; It Ain’t Me, Babe; Ballad Of A Thin Man; Up On Cripple Creek; I Shall Be Released; Endless Highway; The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down; Stage Fright.
Side 2: Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right; Just Like A Woman; It’s All Right, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding); The Shape I’m In; When You Awake; The Weight; All Along The Watchtower; Highway 61 Revisited; Like A Rolling Stone; Blowin’ In The Wind.
I suspect that this release is from the late 1970s and there was a 1974 US cassette release with catalogue number CABJ-201, of which the cassette itself was identical with the one with paper labels used in the Canadian release.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - commercial 2LP set, Asylum AB-201 (Barbados), 1974:
Asylum AB-201 (Barbados) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel ("Printed in
U.S.A.")
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - commercial 2LP sets, Asylum AB-201 (Canada), 1974, re-released mid-1970s (three times):
Asylum AB-201 (Canada) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara
(first release - Asylum Records copyright missing)
Asylum AB-201 (Canada) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Simon
Blokker
(first release variant - Asylum/Nonesuch Records copyright added on right)
Simon Blokker has a copy where the record labels are the first release as above, but on the rear sleeve there is not only a credit to Asylum Records but also to Nonesuch Records, missing from the second/third release sleeve below. A peculiarity of this copy is that it looks like the inner sleeve has never been glued to the outer sleeve. There is no sign whatever the two have ever been together. The records have matrix numbers as for the first release records above,, except that on Side 1 it has "2-AG:" and on the other three sides it has "2-G:" directly opposite the "normal" stamped text.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - stereo cassette release, Asylum CABJ-201 (Canada), 1974:
Tracklisting (compare with Asylum US cassette release above):
Side 1: Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine); Lay, Lady, Lay; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door; It Ain’t Me, Babe; Stage Fright; Up On Cripple Creek; I Shall Be Released; Endless Highway; The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down; Ballad Of A Thin Man.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - 2LP set, Island IDBD 1 (UK), 20 Jun 1974, re-released mid-1970s, 1978:
Island IDBD 1 (UK) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve (1974 release,
printed in USA)
Like the original release of Planet Waves, this album was released in the UK by Island Records, licensed from Asylum Records Inc. The sleeve of my 1974 copy has the words "Printed in USA" on the back, so was imported from America. Thanks to Lars M. Banke for pointing this out.
The records of my copy have plain white paper inner sleeves and white Island "Caribbean island" labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - #-DBD-1-A-SON (handwritten), KENDUN (stamped), K-6779 (handwritten), Side 2 - DBD-1-B-1 SON (handwritten), KENDUN (stamped), K-6784 (handwritten), Side 3 - DBD-1-C-1 SON (handwritten), KENDUN (stamped), K-6785 (handwritten), Side 4 - DBD-1-D SON (handwritten), KENDUN (stamped), K-6782 (handwritten). I previously thought that the records themselves were pressed in the UK, so thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin and Ronald Born for information that "KENDUN" in the matrix numbers means they were mastered by Kendun Recorders of Burbank, CA, and the handwritten "SON" means that the records were pressed at Sonic Recording Products in Long Island, NY, for the UK market because of a shortage of vinyl in the UK at the time, although the labels must have been printed in the UK.
Island IDBD 1 (Ireland) - photo from www.popsike.com (1974 release) |
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for finding a rare Irish pressing online, with the 1974 Island labels. I assume the sleeve is the same as the UK release. More information and scans required! | |||
Island IDBD 1 (UK) - Side 1 scan by Manuel García Jara (mid-1970s release) |
Tom Willems and Lars M. Banke have copies of IDBD 1 with similar sleeves but completely different Island labels as shown. These were subsequent reissues of the album in the mid-1970s and 1978, before the album was transferred to Columbia in 1982. Manuel García Jara has a mid-1970s copy with the yellow/orange labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - I-7 IDBD 1A EG, Side 2 - I-9 IDBD 1A EG, Side 3 - 5 IDBD 1C EG, Side 4 - I-9 IDBD 1D EG. It has the same gatefold sleeve as mine, printed in the USA, but the records must have been pressed in the UK. |
Island IDBD 1 (UK) - Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (mid-1970s release) |
Island IDBD 1 (UK) - Side 3 scan by Manuel García Jara (mid-1970s release) |
|
Ronald Born dates this release as 1975-76, because this label style was short-lived, and agrees the records were pressed in the UK. EG Records was a company founded in 1969 by David Enthoven and John Gaydon that was eventually bought by Virgin Records. At this time EG Records were distributed by Island Records.
Island IDBD 1 (UK) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara (1978 release, printed in UK)
Manuel García Jara's 1978 copy has a sleeve that was printed in the UK by EMI Records Ltd. The records are numbered BDD 1 and BDD 2 and have a third style of record label. The labels also have "EMI Records Ltd.". The Side 2/Side 4 labels are noticeably darker than the Side 1/Side 3 labels. The records are in generic Island inner sleeves with illustrations of contemporary Island UK albums. The records of Manuel's 1978 copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - DBD 1-A-2 (handwritten) KENDUN (stamped) BDD 1-A-2U (stamped), Side 2 - DBD 2-BB (handwritten, but crossed out!) KENDUN (stamped) BDD 1-B-3U (stamped), Side 3 - DBD 4-C-RE (handwritten) KENDUN (stamped) BDD 2-A-2U (stamped), Side 1 - DBD 4-D-2 (handwritten) KENDUN (stamped) BDD 2-B-2U (stamped). These too were mastered by Kendun Recorders of Burbank, CA. The matrix numbers this time indicate the records were pressed in the UK by EMI - the "U" in each matrix number means that this was a pressing not included in the EMI Records catalogue (information from Ronald Born).
Thanks to Lars M. Banke, Tom Willems, Manuel García Jara and Ronald Born for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - "Doubleplay" 8-track cartridge release, Island Y8 BD1 (USA for UK), 1974:
Island Y8 BD1 (USA for UK) - front of slipcase scan by Manuel García Jara ("Made in U.S.A.") |
This release on a single "Doubleplay" 8-track
cartridge has a black cartridge with monochrome artwork on the front label,
which folds over the end. It comes in a black slipcase which also has
monochrome artwork. The text on the rear of the slipcase says the tape cartridge was made in the USA by Warner Bros Records Inc. Stuart Moore's copy was actually bought in Australia, but must have been imported from the UK since the regular 1974 Australian releases were, like the US releases, on Asylum Records (see below). |

The tracks are divided into four "programs", as listed on the rear cartridge label. The running order is completely different from the US 8-track release above, mixing up the Dylan and Band tracks, but no tracks are now split across programs. Program 1: Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine); Lay, Lady, Lay; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down; It Ain’t Me, Babe; Ballad Of A Thin Man Program 2: Up On Cripple Creek; I Shall Be Released; Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door; Endless Highway; Stage Fright Program 3: Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right; Just Like A Woman; The Shape I’m In; It’s All Right, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding); When You Awake Program 4: The Weight; All Along The Watchtower; Like A Rolling Stone; Highway 61 Revisited; Blowin’ In The Wind |

Island ZCBD 1 (UK) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (first release, reverse is blank - front text centred) |
Thanks to Stuart Moore for finding this single cassette release on
discogs.com. This is in fact a later release as the insert of the first
release has several differences as shown below. Both Gerd Rundel and Manuel García Jara sent in scans; their first release
cassette inserts are identical, but Manuel's cassette has "MADE IN ENGLAND"
on both sides of the case, present on Side 2 only of Gerd's cassette. The cassette is
black, with pink Island labels and black text. Scans of the second release
cassette required! Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Manuel García Jara for information and scans. |

Asylum AS 63 000 (West Germany) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (promo and commercial releases) |
The West German gatefold sleeve looks like the UK release except for the details shown. The record sides are numbered AS 63 000-1 and AS 63 000-2 respectively with "Side One" and "Side Two" on both records. They have the logo of the German copyright organisation "GEMA". The first rare German promo copy shown has additional text "France: WE 332" on the rear of the gatefold sleeve. (Lars M. Banke tells me that this French text also appears on commercial copies of the third release below.) This copy has white Asylum labels with promo text in German, French and English. The copyright text round the circumference is on two lines in English only. The records of this German promo copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WEA AB-201-A PF, Side 2 - WEA AB-201-B PF, Side 3 - WEA AB-201-C PF, Side 4 - WEA AB-201-D 63000 D PF plus "Manufactured in Germany" stamped on all four sides. Lars M. Banke's promo copy comes with the same inner sleeves and record labels as shown for Manuel's copy, but the gatefold sleeve is different The additional text "France: WE 332" on the rear is not present, and there is a "Y" instead of an "A" next to the catalogue number, like the copy sold in Holland below. The front sleeve has a sticker with "SONDER PREIS [SPECIAL PRICE]" which is a mystery because promo copies are not sold. As the sticker is stained it appears contemporary, so the original recipient of this copy must have put it into the hands of a dealer quite quickly.
Ronald Born's copy is the first commercial release of this album in Germany. It still came without the "LC|2648" number in a capsule on the labels and the rear sleeve! "LC" numbers were introduced in Germany in 1974 and used for all later releases. The copyright text in the circumference of the record labels is the same as for the promo edition with white labels, on two lines and in English only. The records of this copy have the same matrix numbers as Manuel's promo copy.
The second German commercial release shown comes in a similar gatefold sleeve and inner sleeves as the promo release, and the records have the same matrix numbers. It now has the "LC|2648" number in a capsule at the right bottom corner of the rear sleeve, where the UK sleeve shows the Asylum logo (see above). The copyright text in the circumference of the record labels is again the same as for the promo edition with white labels and the first commercial release, on two lines and in English only. The labels of Lars M. Banke's copy have smaller circumference text that leaves gaps on both sides of the centre hole, reaching to "BEFORE THE FLOOD" only.
The records of the third German commercial copy shown have similar Asylum labels, but different longer copyright text round the circumference, now in German as well as English, ending high on both sides, level with the Side number. The records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - WEA AB-201-A, Side 2 - WEA AB-201-B, Side 3 - WEA AB-201-C, Side 4 - WEA AB-201-D 63000 D. The labels of the copy found on www.discogs.com by Lars M. Banke have circumference text which ends at the centre of the label, level with "BOB DYLAN/THE BAND".
Asylum AS 63 000 (West Germany for NL):

These records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB 201 A IIHM 22739-1-4, Side 2 - AB 201 B IIHM 22740-1-4, Side 3 - AB 201 C IIHM 22741-1-4, Side 4 - AB 201 D IIHM 22742-1-4. The records of Lars M. Banke's copy have different labels, similar to the German third release labels above, but with "STEMRA" instead of "GEMA" to the left of the centre hole. These labels have two lines of circumference text, in English and German, including "MADE IN GERMANY".
Asylum AS 63 000 (NL):
Asylum AS 63 000 (NL) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve, photo by Henk
Soeten ("Made in The Netherlands")
Henk Soeten has a unique Dutch copy bought in his local record store "Groovy Tosti" in Heerenveen, Netherlands in Jan 2019. It has “Made in The Netherlands” on the rear sleeve on what could be a sticker. Also there is no "A" or "Y" code in a circle at rear top right next to catalogue number "AS 63000 (AS201)". The records have the same labels as Manuel's German release for The Netherlands with "STEMRA" at the bottom and one line of copyright text in English. They also have the same matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB 201 A IIHM 22739- 1-4, Side 2 - AB 201 B IIHM 22740- 1-4, Side 3 - AB 201 C IIHM 22741- 1-4, Side 4 - AB 201 D IIHM 22742- 1-4.

Although the German promo copy above may have been intended for distribution in France, there was also a separate French release. This 2LP set was made by Asylum Records, distributed in France by WEA/Filipacchi Music and printed by Offset France. It has the standard gatefold sleeve. Although this release has the usual European catalogue number (63 000), the rear of the outer sleeve has the US catalogue number (AB-201) at top right corner and above the Asylum logo (almost unreadable). The records have Asylum labels with the "door in blue sky with clouds" design with the logo of the "SACEM" French copyright organisation. It's All Right, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) on Side 3 is misspelled as "It's Allright, Ma" and All Along The Watchtower on Side 4 is misspelled "All Along The Watchtover". The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - MPO WEA 63000-A, Side 2 - MPO WEA 63000-B2, Side 3 - MPO 63000-C, Side 4 - MPO 63000-D. They were presumably pressed at MPO International, Averton, France. "MPO" is "Moularges et Plastiques de l'Ouest [Western Mouldings & Plastics]".

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - 2LP sets, Asylum K 63000 (Italy), Jun 1974; Asylum W 63000 (Italy), mid-1970s:
Asylum W
63000 (Italy) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (mid-1970s release -
"Made in Italy by WEA Italiana Distribuzione Messaggeria Musicali Milano")
The 1974 album was made in Italy by Dischi Ricordi S.p.A. for Asylum Records. The catalogue number is "K 53003". The record labels are the blue/white clouds Asylum design. Side 1 has the "SIAE" stamp of the Italian copyright organisation. The Side 1 and Side 3 record labels have red "SIAE" stamps of the Italian copyright organisation. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB 201 - A CP, Side 2 - AB 201 - B CP, Side 3 - AB 201 - C CP, Side 4 - AB 201 - D CP.
The mid-1970s album was made in Italy by WEA Italiana for Asylum Records. The catalogue number is now ""W 53003". The copyright text at bottom of the mid-1970s rear sleeve is slightly damaged due to removal of a sticker, but it is still readable: "(P) & (C) 1974 Asylum Records. Made in Italy by WEA Italiana. Distribuzione Messaggeria Musicali Milano. A Division Of Warner Communications Inc". The record labels again have the "door in blue sky and clouds" Asylum design with a different text layout, with "Rainy Day Woman..." instead of "...Women..." on the Side 1 record label, a mistake not found on the 1974 Side 1 label. The Side 1 and Side 3 record labels again have red "SIAE" stamps of the Italian copyright organisation. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 59 W 201-1L, Side 2 - 59 W 201-2L, Side 3 - 59 W 201-3L, Side 4 - 59 W 201-4L.

Asylum/Hispavox 500-95/96 (Spain) - detail of rear (bottom centre), scan
by Patrick Helfrich
The album was manufactured in Spain by Hispavox S.A., Madrid, for Asylum Records. The copy shown of the first release has two front stickers, one with a special price of 550 pesetas (about €3.30) and the other with the text "Lo Mejor de Bob Dylan en Directo [The Best of Bob Dylan Live]". The records have Asylum labels with the blue sky/white clouds design and are individually numbered 500-95 and 500-96. The song titles are in English and Spanish (although Lay, Lady, Lay is not translated). Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 on Side 1 has a strange character at the end of "RAINY" - as can be seen from the detail scan, it's somewhere between a "T" and a "Y"!
This album has one unique feature: all other worldwide releases of this album have the sides distributed as either Record 1 - Sides 1 and 4, Record 2 - Sides 2 and 3 (for a multidisc autochanger record player), or Record 1 - Sides 1 and 2, Record 2 - Sides 3 and 4 (for a single disc record player). This Spanish release has the rarest combination of all: Record 1 - Sides 1 and 3, Record 2 - Sides 2 and 4!
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Patrick Helfrich for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - 2 cassette set, Asylum/Hispavox 600 47/48 (Spain), 1974:
This very rare set was made, distributed and printed by Hispavox S.A. of Madrid on behalf of Asylum Records. The two cassettes are packaged separately and separately numbered "600 47" and "600 48" but were only sold as a set. The inside of each insert is the same and lists other Asylum Spain cassette releases. As usual with Hispavox tape releases, these cassettes have dark blue paper labels with silver text. The cassette labels have song titles in English whereas on the inserts the titles have also been translated into Spanish. There are some misprints: "I Shall Be Release" (not "Released"), "Blowin In The Wind" (not "Blowin'") and, like the vinyl edition, "Raint Day Women" (only the cassette label, the insert is correct with "Rainy", but both the insert and the cassette label omit the "#12 & 35").
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - 2LP set reissue, Asylum/Hispavox 500-95/96 (Spain), 1978:
Asylum/Hispavox 500-95/96 (Spain) - gold spine scan by Manuel García Jara
(1978 single sleeve release)
This is the rarest Spanish release of this album. Although the sleeve and record labels still have 1974 as the date of release, this set was actually released in 1978, after the success in Spain of The Last Waltz (also released in Spain by Hispavox, for the 3LP set and movie, see 1978 and VHS & DVD 1970s). The most noticeable difference from the 1974 release is the sleeve: this album has a wide single sleeve with a unique golden spine, not a gatefold sleeve, the only Asylum release known like this. The inside photos are therefore missing. Although the 1982 and 1986 CBS Spanish releases reverted to a gatefold sleeve, the 1989 CBS and 1990s CBS/Sony Spanish releases below have similar packaging. The front sleeve still has the catalogue number at top right. The record labels are almost identical to those of the 1974 release, with the same rare distribution of sides and with the mistake "Raint Day Women". There are slight differences in the position of text to left and right of the centre hole and the matrix numbers, which are for this copy: Side 1 - 500-95-S-A-2, Side 2 - 500-95-S-B-2, Side 3 - 500-96-S-A-1, Side 4 - 500-96-S-B-2.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - 2LP set, Asylum 0443/4 (Greece), 1974:
This is the most unusual release of this album worldwide, with the rear of the gatefold sleeve in light orange instead of brown. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is just as unusual in having a purple border instead of brown with the words "BOB DYLAN/THE BAND" at the top. The album was made in Greece by C.G.C.G. Ltd., and the records have the "door in blue sky and clouds" Asylum labels. The sides are numbered: "443 Side One A", 443 Side Two B", "444 Side One C" and "444 Side Two D". The "Ltd." in "C.G.C.G. Ltd." is obscured on Side 1 and 3. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB-201-A7-CP, Side 2 - AB-201-B6-CP, Side 3 - AB-201-C6-CP, Side 4 - AB-201-D6-CP. "KENDUN" is also stamped on all four sides.

This very
rare release was made in Turkey by Melodi Plâk
[Melodi Records] for Warner Brothers. Like the Turkish release of
Planet Waves
it has the same catalogue number as the German album and it also has the
“GEMA” logo on the record labels, to the left of the centre hole. The
gatefold sleeve is the usual with Turkish copyright text in small white
letters at bottom rear. The record labels are dull green with black Warner
Bros. logos. The labels of Record 1 have the text "(P) 1974 Asylum Records"
as the bottom text line and "Türk Mali" (Made in Turkey) below the catalogue
number to the right of the centre hole. The labels of Record 2 have "Türk
Mali" above the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole and "(P)
1974 Asylum Records" (in smaller text) below. The records of this copy have
matrix numbers: Side 1 - WEA AB-201-A2, Side 2 - WEA AB-201-B2, Side 3 - WEA
AB-201-C1, Side 4 - WEA AB-201-D2. For a Turkish Melodi Plâk 7" single of Bob Dylan/The Band - Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)/The Band - Stage Fright from Before The Flood, see International 7" Singles & EPs 1974. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans. |

Asylum AB-201 (Rhodesia):
The album was sold in Rhodesia with the same sleeve but with different record labels. Unusually for Rhodesia there are two record label designs, and Manuel García Jara knows of a copy where Record 1 has labels of the first design and Record 2 has labels of the second! Both sets of Rhodesian record labels have the alternative Asylum design as on the New Zealand records below: the door logo is in a circle and the rest is plain white, not the blue sky and clouds design as on the South African labels above. On the second Rhodesian label design the text to the left and right of "ASYLUM RECORD" is lower than on the first (and much lower on Side 4), and also the side number is on the right on the first design, and on the left on the second design (like the South African labels). Arie de Reus has never seen a copy with the second design labels and suspects they may not be genuine. The name of The Band is omitted on all the South African and Rhodesian record labels even on Side 2 where only they play. The records of the South African and both Rhodesian copies shown all have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB 201 A/1 BS, Side 2 - AB 201 B/1 BS, Side 3 - AB 201 C/1 BS, Side 4 - AB 201 D/1 BS.
On Sides 3 and 4 the song titles of both variants are centred, not left aligned as on the labels of both the first and second designs above.

This 2LP set has an orange/white obi with price ¥3,400 and a unique Japanese 12" four-page booklet. The rear sleeve also has a price of ¥3,400 at bottom right. The promo release has records with white Asylum labels and a "sample" sticker on the front sleeve (for a large picture of this, see below). The inside of the gatefold sleeve is the same as for the US release. The regular Japanese release has "blue sky and clouds" design Asylum labels. The records of both the promo and commercial releases are separately numbered "P-5138Y" and "P-5139Y". |

Thanks to Derek Barker of "Isis" magazine for confirming that there was an Asylum Japan stereo cassette release, Asylum YSA-1001Y. of rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay
The inside of the gatefold sleeve is again the same as for the US release. Both the sleeve and the booklet have the new catalogue number. The spine text is: “P-6325-6Y BOB DYLAN / THE BAND – BEFORE THE FLOOD (P) 1974 ASYLUM RECORDS PRINTED IN JAPAN”. The records come in transparent plastic bags and again have "blue sky and clouds" design Asylum labels, with the new catalogue numbers. They are separately numbered "P-6325Y" and "P-6326Y". The copies shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side ONE - "P-6325Y1" "1 2-A-2" "7S45", Side 2 - "P-6325Y2" "1-A-1", Side 2 - "P-6326Y1" "1-A-1" "7S45", Side 4 - "P-6326Y2" "1-A-2".

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - stereo cassette release, Asylum J5E 201 (Australia), 1982:
This double-play single cassette release has a folded insert, blank on the inside. The cassette is black with white paper labels. There is no date on either the insert or the cassette labels, but the new Asylum Records logo on both was not used before 1982. Also, there is no country of origin on either the insert or the cassette labels, but there is a boomerang emblem embossed into the cassette case on Side 2.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - 2LP set, Asylum AB 201 (New Zealand), Jun 1974:
The rear sleeve has the catalogue number "2AE 201" although the records are numbered "AB 201/1" and "AB 202/2". The records have white Asylum labels.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Antes Del Diluvio [Before The Flood]" - 2LP sets, Asylum/Gamma GX -01-711/712 (Mexico), 1974; Asylum/Gamma GWEA 5001/2 (Mexico), 1975:
These rare Mexican releases of Before The Flood, like Planet Waves, were made in Mexico by Gamma S.A. for Asylum Records. Both gatefold sleeves have the Spanish text "Gira '74 - Grabado en concierto - Album de 2 discos [Tour of '74 - Recorded Live - 2LP Set]", printed on the front in a circle, not a sticker. As far as I can see there is no text on the spine. The rear of the gatefold sleeve is unique in that all text has been translated into Spanish: album title (Antes del Diluvio), tracklist and credits. Note that "Kendun Recorders - Mastering" is missing from the credits. The inner gatefold is as standard. The album title is missing from the labels and, like the South African and Rhodesian albums, only Bob Dylan is credited even on the side where Bob didn't play. This album was released in three Spanish-speaking countries: in Spain the album title was not translated; in Argentina the translation is "Antes de la Inundación" and in Mexico "Antes del Diluvio"; both translations are correct. (Coincidentally, Jackson Browne also released a great album in 1974 on the Asylum label, Late For The Sky that includes a track titled Before The Deluge.) The songs have been translated more or less correctly, except for Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, translated as "Días Lluviosos #12 & 35 [Rainy Days #12 & 35]".
Lars M. Banke's copy was made by Gamma Records with catalogue number GX 01-711/712, and the record labels have the classic Asylum "door in blue sky and clouds" design, but in monochrome. Manuel García Jara says this was the first release. The gatefold sleeve is unique in that the records have to be put in from the top, not the outside edges as expected. The records are arranged: Record 1 - Sides 1/4, Record 2 - Sides 2/3 to play on an autochanger turntable (see comments for The Basement Tapes). The matrix numbers are: Record 1, Side 1 - CX 01 711 1 U (Side 1), Record 1, Side 2 - CX 01 711 4 U (Side 4), Record 2, Side 1 - CX 01 712 2 U (Side 2), Record 2, Side 2 - CX 01 712 3 U (Side 3).
Gamma Records changed their catalogue numbers and record labels in early 1975. The second release has catalogue number GWEA 5001/2 and the record labels are now in colour. The text layout of both sets of labels looks identical. The records of the copy shown are again arranged: Record 1 - Sides 1/4, Record 2 - Sides 2/3, as the copy above, and now have completely different matrix numbers: Record 1, Side 1 - GWEA 5001 1U (Side 1), Record 1, Side 2 - GWEA 5001 4U (Side 4), Record 2, Side 1 - GWEA 5002 2U (Side 2), Record 2, Side 2 - GWEA 5002 3U (Side 3).

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - 2LP set, Asylum ASYLP 3-06-404-007/008 - 50.007/50.008 (Brazil), Jun 1974, re-released 1970s (twice):
1974 release:
The first Brazilian release was made and distributed by Gravaçoes Electricas (Discos Continental). The rear sleeve and inside gatefold are dark grey. Like many releases of this period, this album has Sides 1/4 on Record 1 (ASYLP 50.007), and Sides 2/3 on Record 2 (ASYLP 50.008) to play on an autochanger turntable. The gatefold sleeve was printed in Brazil by Alvorada Ltda. The copy shown has a "GOLDEN HITS" record store sticker on the rear. On the Side 1 label track 3 is mistitled as "Rainy Day Womem N. 12&35" and on Side 3 When You Awake is credited twice to Robertson and Manuel. These mistakes are present on the labels of all the subsequent reissues. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB201A, Side 2 - AB201D, Side 3 - AB201B, Side 4 - AB201C.
Second 1970s release:
Third 1970s release:
The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB201A, Side 2 - AB201B, Side 3 - AB201C, Side 4 - AB201D.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - promo 2LP set, Asylum/Polydor LP-130.002 (Venezuela), 1974:
Asylum/Polydor LP-130.002 (Venezuela) - detail of
rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by
Manuel García Jara
At the bottom of the rear sleeve there is the usual Latin American slogan "El disco es cultura [A record is culture]" (a protest against VAT on records but not books) and Polydor Venezuela information, while the manufacturer credit is printed vertically near the spine: "Impreso en Venezuela por Grabaciones Antor S.A. [Printed in Venezuela by Antor Recordings S.A.]" There is no text on the spine. There are spelling mistakes in the song titles: "Lay Lady La" (on rear sleeve only), an incomplete title "Rainy Day Women" (on both the rear sleeve and record label). The Spanish translations are correct except for "It Ain't Me Babe" which is wrongly translated as "No es mi nena [She's not my baby]". The correct translation is "No soy yo, nena". The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASYLUM. LPS. 130002 - 1-A, Side 2 - ASYLUM. LPS. 130002 - B-1, Side 3 - ASYLUM. LPS. 130002 - Disco. 2. A, Side 4 - ASYLUM. LPS. 130002 - B - Disco - 2-. The matrix numbers of Sides 1, 2 and 3 have at the end a word that Manuel is not able to identify ("Cetones [Ketones?]" or something like it). On Side 4 this word is between "- B -" and "Disco - 2-".
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Antes De La Inundacion [Before The Flood]" - promo and commercial 2LP sets, Music-Hall/Elektra MH-14.269/14.270 (Argentina), 1977:
The gatefold sleeve of the album is standard but with the Spanish title on the spine. The song titles are translated into Spanish on the record labels. Sergio Magnacca tells me these translations are quite different from the translations made by Columbia, often better but in one case incorrect - It's All Right Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) is translated as "Esta Bien Ma (Solo Estoy Bromenado)" [It's All Right, Ma (I'm Only Joking)]!
The matrix numbers on the commercial records are: Side 1 - MH 14269 1 1s, Side 2 - MH 14269 2 1s, Side 3 - MH 14270 1 1s, Side 4 - MH 14270 2 1s.
Thanks to Sergio Magnacca and Paul Prince for information and photos.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Antes De La Inundacion [Before The Flood]" - two stereo cassette release, Music-Hall/Elektra M-3.651/M-3.652 (Argentina), 1976:
This very rare 1976 cassette set came as two separate cassettes ("Primera Parte" and "Segunda Parte"), again released by the Argentinean label Discos Music-Hall under licence from Elektra. The inserts have the song titles in Spanish and English and are blank on the inside. The cassettes are buff with off-white Music-Hall labels with song titles in Spanish and both have "MH" embossed in the plastic.
There was also an 8-track version of this release: Music-Hall/Elektra MH8T-1.651/652 - scans required.
Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
Vinyl and Tape Releases (1982 onwards)
In 1982 rights to release the album were purchased by Columbia, so releases after that date are on Columbia, CBS or CBS/Sony. The original vinyl and tape releases on Asylum, Elektra or Island are in the section above.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue 2LP set, Columbia KG 37661 (USA), Apr 1982; Columbia CG 37661 (USA), 1983, re-released 1985:
Columbia CG 37661 (USA)/Columbia KG 37661 (USA) - detail of rear with what looks like a
wide brown inverted "T"-shaped sticker over the previous Asylum information, scan by Gerd Rundel (all releases)
These are the Columbia re-releases of the original Asylum double album (the transfer of rights took place in 1982). For Electric Lunch, a 12" Columbia US promotional album with three tracks each from Planet Waves and Before The Flood released in 1982, see International Albums (Dylan-only Compilations) 1980-89.
According to www.discogs.com the first Columbia release in 1982 was KG 37661, followed by CG 37661 in 1983. The sleeve of Columbia CG 37661 is the same as for the KG 37661 release shown except for a different barcode on the rear sleeve and the catalogue number CG 37661 on the spine. The records of Chris Hood's copy of KG 37661 have matrix numbers: Side 1- PAL 37662-1A (stamped), Side 2- PBL 37662-1B (stamped), Side 3- AL 37663-1H (stamped), Side 4 - PBL 37663-1-A written (Side 3 doesn't have the "P" in "PAL"). Each side is stamped "COLUMBIA NY". The records of Gerd Rundel's copy of KG 37661 have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 37662-1L, Side 2 - BL 37662-1K, Side 3 - AL 37663 G/B, Side 4 - BL-37663 G/A. Michael Palinkas has a copy of KG 37661 which was bought in the late 1980s, but must be from earlier.
Manuel García Jara has a copy of the first release of CG 37661 which must date from 1983. The records of this copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 37662-1D plus T1 plus "COLUMBIA NY", Side 2 - PBL 37662-1C plus T1 plus "COLUMBIA NY", Side 3 - PAL 37663-1D plus T1 plus "COLUMBIA NY", Side 4 - PBL 37663-1AA plus T1 plus "COLUMBIA NY". Gerd Rundel's later copy of CG 37661 has the same sleeve but the record labels now have an inverted triangle to the left of the centre hole on Sides 1 and 3, a style first introduced with Biograph in 1985. The records of this copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 37662-1H (stamped), Side 2 - PBL 37662-1B (stamped), Side 3 - < B-TR> AL 37663 G1B (handwritten), Side 4 - (H-AP) BL-37663 G1A (handwritten). Side 1 and Side 2 are also stamped “COLUMBIA NY”.
Randy Metheny has a bizarre copy bought in California in this Columbia KG 37661 gatefold sleeve where the records have 1974 Asylum "CTH" record labels and matrix numbers as shown at the top of this page. This cannot have been as originally sold, and the mismatched sleeve and records must have been paired up by a dealer!
Thanks to Gerd Rundel, Manuel García Jara, Hans Seegers, Michael Palinkas and Chris Hood for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - heavyweight 180gm stereo vinyl test pressings and 2LP set, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab MFSL 2-426 (USA), 29 Jul 2014:
The second test pressing variant is undated and the records come in plain black cut-out sleeves. Again Sides 1 and 3 have RTI labels and Sides 2 and 4 have plain white labels. The records have the same handwritten matrix numbers as those of the first variant.
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin, Bob Meyer and Gerd Rundel for information and pictures.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue "2 On 1" single cassette releases, Columbia KGT 37661 (USA), 1982; Columbia CGT 37661 (USA), 1980s (two releases):
I think the KGT 37661 "2 on 1" release is the first cassette release by Columbia. The insert is different from the CGT 37661 releases and the barcode on the rear has hyphens between the numbers. The cassette is textured light grey with black text with "MADE IN USA" embossed on top right of Side 1, there are no paper labels. A scan of the insert is required.
The inserts of the CGT 37661 "2 on 1" single cassette releases are identical and blank on the reverse. The variant 1 cassette is similar to the KGT cassette - light grey with black text, there are again no paper labels. The variant 2 cassette is transparent smoked grey with white text, again without paper labels (this may be from the late 1980s). On both CGT releases, both cassette sides show the catalogue number as just "GT 37661".
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue 2LP set, CBS
22137 (UK), 1982 (three variants):
This UK 2LP set was released after
Columbia/CBS bought the rights to Planet Waves
and Before The Flood in 1982.
It was sold as one of the first albums in
the
then brand new series called "Nice Price".
CBS 22137 (UK) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara (all 1982 releases)
Three copies are shown which come in the same gatefold sleeve. There is a blue/black/white "Nice Price Doubles" sticker on the front of the third copy. Each set of records comes in CBS generic inner sleeves advertising the "Nice Price" series with the slogan "The nice surprise is the nicer price". The same gatefold sleeve was used for subsequent releases, see below. At the bottom centre of the rear of the gatefold sleeve there is what looks like a wide brown inverted "T"-shaped sticker that seems like the Island or Asylum logo on the original worldwide releases has been covered over (the Columbia US releases are the same - see above). The rear has the "HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC" logo introduced in the UK around 1982 (the first Dylan album to have the logo on first release was Infidels in 1983).
All the records were made in England and have orange/yellow CBS labels. The labels of the first copy still have the “MADE IN ENGLAND” text at the bottom of the labels. Gerd has a second copy where all the record labels have "MADE IN ENGLAND" in the circumference and no bottom text. The labels of Manuel's third 1982 release now have CBS copyright information at the bottom and “MADE IN ENGLAND” is again in the circumference text. The records of all the copies shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-22137-A1, Side 2 - CBS-22137-B1, Side 3 - CBS-22137-C1, Side 4 - CBS-22137-D1.
Gerd also has a copy with mixed record labels: three labels (Sides 1, 2 and 4) have the “MADE IN ENGLAND” text at the bottom of the labels (first 1982 release), while the Side 3 label has no bottom text and “MADE IN ENGLAND” is in the circumference text on the right (second 1982 release).
Thanks to Gerd Rundel, Manuel García Jara and Simon Blokker for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - promo and commercial reissue 2LP sets, CBS 22137 (UK), mid-1980s (two releases), late 1980s:
CBS 22137 (UK), first mid-1980s release:
CBS 22137 (UK) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve with "T"-shaped sticker at
centre, scan by Gerd Rundel (both mid-1980s and late
1980s releases)
These differences lead me to suppose these labels may come from a different printer than the labels immediately before and after. The first mid-1980s records come in a different CBS “NICE PRICE” inner sleeve from those of the 1982 releases. The records of the first mid-1980s copy shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-22137-A1, Side 2 - CBS-22137-B1, Side 3 - CBS-22137-C2, Side 4 - CBS-22137-D1.
CBS 22137 (UK), second mid-1980s release:
Surprisingly, the layout of text to the left and right of the centre hole has reverted to the same as that of the 1982 releases, e.g. with "BOB DYLAN" below the album title, and arrows below "STEREO" to the left of the centre hole, etc. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1: CBS-22137-A1, Side 2: CBS-22137-B1, Side 3: CBS-22137-C2, Side 4: CBS-22137-D1.
CBS 22137 (UK), late 1980s release:
The records of the late 1980s copy shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 22137-A2, Side 2 - CBS-22137-B1, Side 3 - CBS-22137-C2, Side 4 - CBS-22137-D1.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue "2 On 1" single cassette release, CBS 40-22137 (UK), 1980s:
This UK "Double Play" cassette was released after Columbia/CBS bought the rights to Planet Waves and Before The Flood in 1982. The tracklist is repeated on the inside of the cassette insert with composer credits. The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue 2LP set, CBS 22137 (Ireland), 1982:
There is also a variant with labels without "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom. Lars M. Banke has found an Irish copy of CBS 22137 on eBay with mixed labels - Sides 1 and 4 are as shown (variant 1), but "MADE IN ENGLAND" is missing from Sides 2 and 3 (variant 2). Somewhere there must be a copy that has variant 2 labels on Sides 1 and 4 as well!
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue 2LP set, CBS 22137 (NL), 1982, re-released late 1980s:
The late 1980s release comes in the same gatefold sleeve as the 1982 release, even including the shaped sticker with CBS release details pasted over the Asylum logo and release details. The records were again made in Holland but now have red CBS labels. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-22137-3A-1 (handwritten), AL 37662-1H (stamped), Side 2 - 01-22137-3B-1 (handwritten), BL 37662-1H (stamped), Side 3 - 01-22137-3C-1 (handwritten), AL 37663-1J (stamped), Side 4 - 01-22137-3D-1 (handwritten), BL 37663-1J (stamped).

Columbia 22137 (NL), first 1990s release:

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue single cassette releases, CBS 40-22137 (NL), 1982, re-released late 1980s:
These Dutch cassettes were released after Columbia/CBS bought the rights to Planet Waves and Before The Flood in 1982. The first cassette has a date of "1986" written on the inside by the previous owner. The second cassette release must date from later in the 1980s because of the later insert style with a multi-coloured design under the tracklist (to discourage piracy). This insert has "© 1978 ENSCHEDE" at top left, but this date cannot relate to the release date. Both cassettes are light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The text on the second cassette is completely different from that of the first cassette, and does not include the song titles.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue 2LP sets, CBS S 88565 (Spain), 1982, re-released 1990; CBS 22137 (Spain), 1986, re-released 1989; CBS/Sony 22137 (Spain), 1991:
CBS S 88565 (Spain), 1982:
CBS S 88565 (Spain) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve with "T"-shaped
sticker, scan by Manuel García Jara (1982 release - 1986 release is the same)
CBS S 88565 (Spain), 1990(!):
This anomalous Spanish Before The Flood set was released by CBS in 1990. This release has the old catalogue number (S 88565) from when the set was first released by CBS in 1982 with orange/yellow labels, instead of the new catalogue number (22137) used first in 1986, and again in 1989 and in 1991 (all listed below). It has the same gatefold sleeve as for the 1982 release with the CBS logo and the old catalogue number on rear. The records have red CBS labels and were manufactured by Tecnodisco, Madrid (like the 1989 and 1991 22137 releases below that didn't come in a gatefold sleeve). The record matrix numbers are the same as for all Spanish releases since 1986. Apart from the Side 4 label, the other labels have differences in the tracklist text: different quantity of lines (Side 1) and different distribution in lines of song titles and composers.
CBS 22137 (Spain), 1986:
This album was reissued by CBS in 1986 and again the sleeve was printed by Offset ALG. The Discos CBS S.A. address shown is still Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16. It now has the standard European catalogue number (CBS 22137). This was the last Spanish edition with a gatefold sleeve. The rear sleeve still looks as if it has an upside down wide "T"-shaped sticker covering the old Asylum information! The records have red CBS labels and the same typeface was used in subsequent editions. There are no longer any mistakes and all song titles (in English only) are correct. The record shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 22137-A0, Side 2 - 22137-B0, Side 3 - 22137-C0, Side 4 - 22137-D0.
CBS 22137 (Spain), 1989 (re-release); CBS/Sony 22137 (Spain), 1991:
The sleeve of the 1989 and 1991 releases was printed in Spain by Offset ALG of Madrid, and the Discos CBS S.A. address shown is Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046 Madrid ( a new postcode). The records again have red labels dated 1982 (the year of the Sony copyright change) and were now made in Spain by Tecnodisco S.A., Madrid (the 1991 CBS/Sony record labels also include the telephone number in the circumference text). The 1989 record labels are identical to the 1986 labels apart from a slight difference: an asterisk before the number of each side, still present on the 1991 CBS/Sony labels. Both the 1989 and 1991 records shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 22137-A0, Side 2 - 22137-B0, Side 3 - 22137-C0, Side 4 - 22137-D0 (the same as the 1986 release).

Bob Dylan/The Band - "Before The Flood" - reissue 2LP set, CBS/Sony 36AP 2348~9 (Japan), 1982:
This is the CBS/Sony reissue after the rights to Planet Waves and Before The Flood were acquired by Columbia/CBS in 1982. The front sleeve is the same as the previous Japanese release (see above), but with the CBS/Sony logo replacing the Asylum logo. The price was ¥3,600, as indicated by the "36" in the catalogue number. There is a dark blue/black/white obi and a unique Japanese 12" booklet with a different design from the previous Asylum booklet.
The records have red labels with yellow "CBS SONY" logos in a ring round the circumference. The records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 36AP-2348 A1, Side 2 - 36AP-2348 B1, Side 3 - 36AP-2349 A1, Side 4 - 36AP-2349 B1.

(USA)/Europe) - detail of outside of card sleeve
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. Before The Flood comes in a folded card sleeve with the pockets for the CDs on the inside centre. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK15" plus "DISCS 16&17". The CDs are different in detail, the US Before The Flood CDs have catalogue numbers "88691924312D16" and "88691924312D17", whereas the European CDs have catalogue numbers "88691924312-16" and "88691924312-17". The European CDs were made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1970s albums from Self Portrait to Slow Train Coming were released in Japan on 23 Apr 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30482 to SICP 30500. The 2013 remastered Before The Flood is SICP 30490-91, more details will be added when available. |
