Original US stereo 2LP set, Asylum AB 201, 20 Jun 1974, reissued as Columbia KC 37661, 1982 (later as CG 37661). For Electric Lunch, a 1982 US Columbia promo 12" mini-album with selections from Planet Waves and Before The Flood, see International Albums (Dylan-only Compilations) 1980-89. The album was recorded live with The Band at various locations in the USA in Jan and Feb 1974. |
Vinyl and Tape Releases (1974)
Vinyl and tape releases were originally on Asylum in the USA, with worldwide releases sometimes on other labels such as Island or Elektra. In 1982 rights to release the set were purchased by Columbia, so vinyl and tape releases after that date are on Columbia, CBS or CBS/Sony (see the separate section below). There is a mystery concerning track 1 on Side 1, Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine). On the 1974 Asylum LP release labels where track times are given it's listed as 3:16, and many 1974 Asylum 7" singles worldwide have this 3:16 timing on the A-side. However, the two CD copies I own have the track at 4:15 and 4:18, and the 1974 US 7" singles show the track at 3:38, while the Canadian and Japanese 7" singles time it at 3:40. Are there actually two different vinyl versions of this track, with the 3:16 version being an edit?

The first test pressings were made by Sonic Recording Products,
Inc, of Holbrook, Long Island, New York State. The track listings and all
other text are handwritten, and there's no album title. Sides 2 and 4 have
the name "Gilles Seinturier (London 74)". Side 3 has the name "Robin
Denzelow". Robin Denselow (with an "s") is a well-known UK journalist and
music writer, so it's possible this set was intended for him for review. The second test pressings were made for Asylum by the Columbia Records pressing plant at Terre Haute, IN. The records are in plain white paper sleeves, each with a US letter sized sheet taped to it. The typed text says the disc is a label copy for Asylum Records, and includes the artist name, album title, track listings and track timings. The record labels are generic with no identifying text. The records have Side 1 paired with Side 4 and Side 2 paired with Side 3 as The Basement Tapes for playing on a multi-changer record player. They have "KENDUN" stamped on each side and handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - T2 AB-201-A-4 CTH, Side 2 - T1 AB-201-B4 CTH, Side 3 - T2 AB-201-C-4 CTH, Side 4 - T2 AB-201-D4 CTH (the "CTH" code shows the record was pressed at the Atco pressing plant in Terre Haute, IN. (Like Planet Waves, this album was mastered at Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA.)

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for scans of his copy of Asylum AB-201. The front has two stickers, of which the one in the top right is the same as the promo copy above. This copy has regular Asylum labels. The records are arranged as my UK copy below: Record 1: Sides 1 & 4, Record 2: Side 2 & 3. Mick Robinson's copy has a slightly different label design, and was pressed in Terre Haute, IN, whereas the label on the left was from Specialty Record Corp, Olyphant, PA. Jeremy Mayle's copy has yet another label design, and was probably pressed at Santa Maria, CA. Side 1 has handwritten matrix number: AB-201-A8 MON KENDUN.

Like the original release of Planet Waves, this album was released in the UK by Island Records, licensed from Asylum Records Inc. The sleeve of my 1974 copy has the words "Printed in USA" on the back, so was imported from America. Thanks to Lars M. Banke for pointing this out.
I previously thought that the records themselves were pressed in the UK, so thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for pointing out a discussion on the Steve Hoffman forum that said the "KENDUN" in the matrix numbers means they were in fact pressed by Kendun Recorders of Burbank, CA, for the UK market because of a shortage of vinyl in the UK at the time, although the labels must have been printed in the UK. The records of my copy have plain white paper sleeves and white Island "Caribbean island" labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - #-DBD-1-A-SON (handwritten), KENDUN (stamped), K-6779 (handwritten), Side 2 - DBD-1-B-1 SON (handwritten), KENDUN (stamped), K-6784 (handwritten), Side 3 - DBD-1-C-1 SON (handwritten), KENDUN (stamped), K-6785 (handwritten), Side 4 - DBD-1-D SON (handwritten), KENDUN (stamped), K-6782 (handwritten).

Nol Grint and
Lars M. Banke have copies of IDBD 1 with similar sleeves but completely
different Island labels as shown. These were subsequent reissues of the
album in the mid-1970s and 1978, before the album was transferred to
Columbia in 1982. Manuel Garcia Jara's 1978
copy has a sleeve that was printed in the UK by EMI Records Ltd. The records
are numbered BDD 1 and BDD2 and the labels also have "EMI Records Ltd.". The
Side 2 labels are noticeably darker than the Side 1 labels. The records are in generic Island inner sleeves with illustrations of contemporary Island UK albums. The records of Manuel's 1978 copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - DBD 1-A-2 (handwritten) KENDUN (stamped) BDD 1-A-2U (stamped), Side 2 - DBD 2-BB (handwritten, but crossed out!) KENDUN (stamped) BDD 1-B-3U (stamped), Side 3 - DBD 4-C-RE (handwritten) KENDUN (stamped) BDD 2-A-2U (stamped), Side 1 - DBD 4-D-2 (handwritten) KENDUN (stamped) BDD 2-B-2U (stamped). This release on a single "Doubleplay" 8-track cartridge has a black
cartridge with monochrome artwork on the front label. The tracks are divided
into four "programmes". This copy was actually bought in Australia, but must
have been imported from the UK since the regular 1974 Australian releases

The West German gatefold sleeve looks like the UK release except for the details shown. It also has "LC 2648" number in a capsule at the right bottom corner of the rear sleeve, where the UK pressing shows the Asylum logo (see above). The record sides are numbered AS 63 000-1 and AS 63 000-2 respectively with "Side One" and "Side Two" on both records. They have the logo of the German copyright organisation "GEMA". The German copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - WEA AB-201-A, Side 2 - WEA AB-201-B, Side 3 - WEA AB-201-C, Side 4 - WEA AB-201-D 63000 D.
The West German album was also sold in Holland, but there was also a Dutch release with the West German sleeve and Dutch records. The records are numbered Side 1 to Side 4 and have the logo of the Dutch copyright organisation "STEMRA". The Dutch copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AB 201 A IIHM 22739-1-4, Side 2 - AB 201 B IIHM 22740-1-4, Side 3 - AB 201 C IIHM 22741-1-4, Side 4 - AB 201 D IIHM 22742-1-4.

Again, the gatefold is similar to the UK sleeve apart from the detail shown.
This album was manufactured in Spain by Hispavox S.A., Madrid, for Asylum
Records. The first release had two front stickers, one with a special price
of 550 pesetas (about €3.30) and the other with the text "Lo Mejor de Bob
Dylan en Directo [The Best of Bob Dylan Live]". The records have Asylum
labels with the blue/white clouds design and are individually numbered
500-95 and 500-96. The song titles are in English and Spanish. Rainy Day
Women #12 & 35 on Side 1 has a strange character at the end of "RAINY" - as
can be seen from the detail scan, it's somewhere between a "T" and a "Y"!

This album was released in very limited quantities and is very rare. Like Planet Waves and the later CBS Yugoslavian releases this album was made in Yugoslavia by Suzy Records of Zagreb (now Croatia) for Asylum Records using the German release as source. The outer sleeve printing is of very poor quality, especially the Yugoslav-specific text - the text which should read "Po licenci WEA-Suzy produkcija gramofonskih ploca Zagreb" is hardly visible. The records were pressed in Yugoslavia by Jugoton and the record labels are the blue/white clouds Asylum design. The labels have the logo of the "SAKOJ" Yugoslavian copyright organisation. The artists' organisation "SAKOJ" (Union of Composers of Yugoslavia) became "SOKOJ" (Federation of Organisations of Composers of Yugoslavia) in 1976, which appears on the labels of Dylan releases after that date. The matrix numbers of the copy shown are: Side 1 - WEA AB-201-A PF, Side 2 - WEA AB-201-B PF, Side 3 - WEA AB-201-C PF, Side 4 - WEA AB-201-D PF. Ironically this album was produced by CBS Records Israel on behalf of Asylum/Elektra Records. The cover is not folded out, and the rear has a white border. There is a round printed coloured information sticker on the front with text "2 RECORDS/ REGISTERED GOLD". The records have yellow Elektra labels with matrix numbers AB–201-A2/B6/C7/D6 CSM/CP/CP/CP (written) and KENDUN (stamped). This album is incredibly rare - it and Planet Waves
were the only Lebanese Dylan releases because Columbia/CBS had no pressing
plant there. The album was manufactured in Lebanon by SLD Records of Beirut
on behalf of Asylum Records and has unique solid blue labels. It has a

There is a orange/white obi and a unique Japanese 12" booklet. The promo release has white Asylum labels and a "sample" sticker on the front sleeve (for a large picture of this, see below). The regular release has "cloud-design" Asylum labels.

The outside covers of the album are standard but with the Spanish title on the spine. The song titles are translated into Spanish on the record labels. Sergio Magnacca tells me these translations are quite different from the translations made by Columbia, often better but in one case incorrect - It's All Right Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) is translated as "Esta Bien Ma (Solo Estoy Bromenado)" [It's All Right, Ma (I'm Only Joking)]!
Matrix numbers on the commercial records are: Side 1 - "MH 14269 1 1s", Side 2 - "MH 14269 2 1s", Side 3 - "MH 14270 1 1s"', Side 4 - "MH 14270 2 1s". There were also cassette and 8-track versions of this release.

This is the Columbia re-release of the original Asylum double album (the transfer of rights took place in 1982). Michael Palinkas has a copy with catalogue number KG 37661, which dates from the late 1980s. The records of Chris Hood's copy of KG 37661 have matrix numbers: Side 1- PAL 37662-1A (stamped), Side 2- PBL 37662-1B (stamped), Side 3- AL 37663-1H (stamped), Side 4 - PBL 37663-1-A written (Side 3 doesn't have the "P" in "PAL"). Each side is stamped "Columbia NY".

This set appears to be the first released in Holland by CBS after the rights were sold to CBS, in that the rear sleeve looks like it has a shaped sticker with CBS release details pasted over the Asylum logo and release details. The records were made in Holland and have orange/yellow CBS labels.
The records have very difficult to read handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-22137-1A-1, Side 2 - 01-22137-3B-1, Side 3 - 01-22137-2C-1, Side 4 - 01-22137-1D-1. Each side has two more stamped matrix numbers, for example: Side 1 has "AL 37662-1J" and " 01-88565-1A-1". Additionally, each side is also stamped “COLUMBIA NY” in dead wax.

This is the CBS/Sony reissue after the rights to Planet Waves and Before The Flood were acquired by Columbia in 1982. The front sleeve is the same as the previous Japanese release (see above), but with the CBS/Sony logo replacing the Asylum logo. The records have red labels with yellow "CBS SONY" logos and stamped matrix numbers 36AP-2348/9A1/B1. This 2LP set is unusual because it comes in a wide regular sleeve, laminated both sides, that holds both records, instead of a gatefold sleeve. The inside photos are therefore missing. |

CBS/Sony 48DP 1026-7 (1987): This set comes in a double-width jewel case with a dark green and black obi with white text in the "CBS CD Rock Classics 100" series with price ¥4,800 (before sale tax was introduced). There was a 48-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese. The rear insert has date code "O-8-26" (26 Aug 1987). It was released again in 1989 with an obi price of ¥4,511 (¥4,380 plus sales tax). The copy of the 1987 release shown is a promo, with a sticker on the rear insert (covering the barcode) and Japanese characters indicating a promo in the clear centres of the CDs themselves. Sony Records SRCS 6165-6 (1991): This set comes in an experimental 2CD jewel case that was quickly discontinued in favour of the slimline 2CD jewel case (it was thinner than a double-width jewel case but thicker than a single CD jewel case or a slimline 2CD jewel case). The set has a black, red, white, blue, yellow "Nice Price" obi with price ¥3,000 and date "91-12-1" (1 Dec 1991). The promo copy shown has a panel on the rear insert and Japanese characters in the clear centres of the CDs. These reissue sets were manufactured in Austria for distribution Europe-wide. The 1980s releases and the 1991 release come in a double-width 2CD jewel case with a stapled 8-page booklet, the late 1990s release comes in a single-width slimline 2CD jewel case with a clear 2CD tray and the stapled 8-page booklet as the front insert. The first 1980s release discs were made in Japan, the second in Austria. For some reason CD2 of Keith Schweiger's second set is the same as CD2 for the first set, made in Japan. The limited edition of this remastered release comes in a double digipak which will be replaced by a standard 2CD jewel case when reprinted. The front of the digipak has a release-specific limited edition yellow sticker with black text. There is an 8-page stapled booklet and both this and the digipak contain new photographs. The CDs reproduce the 1970s style Columbia US record labels. The only difference between the CDs in the digipak and jewel case releases is the catalogue number. The four 2009 remasters were not released in Japan in digipaks but in mini-LP cardboard sleeves reproducing the US initial release with the original Japanese obi. In this case the obi is a reproduction of the original 1974 Warner/Pioneer/Asylum P-5138Y/P-5139Y obi (see above). There is an 8-page booklet in English and a 32-page booklet in English and Japanese. This release is on Blu-spec CDs, an audio-only disc which is presumably
intended to be Sony's new high quality audio format, currently on sale in
Japan only. The copy shown is still
sealed, with a blue and white obi with price ¥3,500 (¥3,333 before tax). The
release date is shown as "09-9-30" (30 Sep 2009), the original release date
as "74-6-20" (20 Jun 1974) and the withdrawal date as "10-3-29" (29
Mar
2010). These are not actually Blu-ray discs as it says on the sticker, but
they are made using Blu-ray
