Dylan & The Dead
(1989)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Under The Red Sky

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Revised 06 January, 2024.

Original US stereo album, Columbia OC 45281 (LP), OCT 45281 (MC), CK 45281 (CD), 12 Sep 1989.

Thanks to Dag Braathen for scans of a Columbia US promo leaflet sent to record stores with details of promotional activities and album ordering information.

The front sleeve design is a photograph of a graffiti wall by "Trotsky" found on a New York street. Thanks to Steve Perrin for information that the mural had previously been used by Tom Kimmel for the front of his 1987 Mercury single Tryin' to Dance. The rear photo of Bob in the panama hat is credited to "Suzie Q", presumably his dresser/wardrobe mistress Suzie Pullen. This album was remastered by Columbia in 1997 but that remastered edition was never released. Remastered versions of Shooting Star and Most Of The Time from it appeared in 2000 on the Wonder Boys and High Fidelity soundtrack albums respectively (for both see Released Rarities).

However, this title is now one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Some titles are available in 5.1 surround sound, but not this one. Thanks to Howard Tom for the information that Most Of The Time has a fade-in start on the CD layer but a full-volume start on the SA-CD layer.

Tracklist:

Side 1 - Political World; Where Teardrops Fall; Everything Is Broken; Ring Them Bells; Man In The Long Black Coat
Side 2 - Most Of The Time; What Good Am I?; Disease Of Conceit; What Was It You Wanted?; Shooting Star.

Out-takes from this album have been officially released as follows:

Under The Red Sky (1990): Born In Time and God Knows were out-takes from Oh Mercy re-recorded for the 1990 album

The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): Series Of Dreams. For alternate and edited versions of this song, see 1991.

Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 3 (1994): Dignity - remixed by Brendan O'Brien

Touched By An Angel: The Album (1998): Dignity - original Oh Mercy out-take produced by Daniel Lanois (R-0273, see 1998).
R-0273 was included on the 2000 European/Japanese Columbia compilations The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000 and in 2007 on the 3CD compilation Dylan, so is no longer a rarity.

Apple iTunes Online Music Store (2003): Everything Is Broken (alternate take with different lyrics R-0613, see Online Performances (Other))
R-0613
was released in Oct 2008 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006, see here. This means it is no longer a rarity.

Chronicles Volume One 6 Song Sampler (2004): Dignity (previously unreleased piano demo, R-0680, see 2004)
R-06
80 was released in Oct 2008 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006, see here. This means it is no longer a rarity.

The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006 (2008): Dignity (previously unreleased piano demo R-0679 as above); Most Of The Time (two alternate takes); Born In Time (original version - two alternate takes); God Knows (original version); Everything Is Broken (alternate take); Series Of Dreams (new alternate take); Dignity (alternate take to version released on Touched By An Angel: The Album, R-0273, see 1998); Ring Them Bells (alternate take)

A live version of What Was It You Wanted? was included in the July 2021 online video Shadow Kingdom, see VHS & DVD 2020s.

Most Of The Time - picture from eBay
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding these three items on eBay which purport to be UK 12" acetates, each with two versions of songs from the Oh Mercy sessions. They have CBS Whitfield Street Studios labels with typed text and all come in CBS UK 12" single card sleeves. Arie de Reus has confirmed that these items are not genuine. Work-in-progress recordings from the Oh Mercy sessions were created only in the USA. The distinctive CBS UK 12" single sleeve is genuine but was never used for any UK Dylan 12" single releases, which is why it isn't listed on my Singles Sleeves page.

Series Of Dreams - picture from eBay

Series Of Dreams in CBS 12" sleeve - picture from eBay

These three discs belonged to a departed US collector who had in the past contributed to my web-site. Before his death he sold off most of his collection through Heritage Auctions, Dallas, TX, but there were some that Heritage wouldn't sell because they didn't think they were authentic. His son is now selling these on eBay and these are three of them. I have no doubt that the original owner bought them in good faith and believed them to be genuine. The seller claims they come from aborted first recording sessions for Oh Mercy in the UK with Ronnie Wood, but I haven't found any evidence such sessions ever took place.

"Oh Mercy" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia OC 45281 (USA), 12 Sep 1989:

Columbia OC 45281 (USA) - front scan by Hans Seegers
Renaud Deperrieux points out that the paper for the US inner sleeve is much thinner than the paper used for European inner sleeves. Like the Australian sleeve below it doesn't have the small cut-out at the top of the rear of the Dutch inner sleeve.

The record shown has red Columbia labels and handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 45281-IA DMM, Side 2 - BL 45281-IIA DMM.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Gerd Rundel plus Dirk, Tom and Thommy for information and scans. Thanks especially to Gerd for opening his sealed copy!

"Oh Mercy" - promo stereo vinyl LP, Columbia OC 45281 (USA for Canada), 12 Sep 1989:

Columbia OC 45281 (USA for Canada) - front scan by Gerd Rundel

This Canadian promo release has a golden French/English promo stamp in the top left of the rear sleeve, typical for Canadian promo releases. Otherwise it's exactly the same as the US release – probably there was no Canadian pressing. The sleeve and inner sleeve were made in the USA, and the record is also identical to that of the US release without a country of origin on the labels. The record has red Columbia labels and handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 45281-IA DMM, Side 2 - BL 45281-IIA DMM (the same as the US release above). For detail scans see above.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

"Oh Mercy" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS 465800 1 (UK/Ireland), Sep 1989:

CBS 465800 1 (UK) - front scan by Gerd Rundel
This record again comes in a printed inner sleeve. It has "MADE IN ENGLAND" on both the rear sleeve and the record labels, which are totally different in design from the Dutch labels below. The copy of the record shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 4658001 A1, Side 2 - 4658001 B1.

Also shown is a copy of a very rare Irish pressing. It comes in the UK outer and inner sleeves but has "Record mfd. in Ireland" on the record labels. The labels have a different pale red matt colour from the glossy darker red of the UK release and the record has the same handwritten matrix numbers as the UK record.

"Oh Mercy" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS 465800 1 (NL), Sep 1989:

CBS 465800 1 (NL) - front scan by Gerd Rundel

The Dutch record comes in a picture inner sleeve with the song titles and musician credits on the front and a pattern on the reverse. There's a small cut-out at the top of the rear of the Dutch inner sleeve which doesn't appear to be present on the US and Australian inner sleeves. The record has red CBS labels and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 465800 20 1A1, Side 2 - 465800 20 1B1. Gerd Rundel's copy has "CB 291" in a lozenge below the bar code at top right of the rear sleeve - on Tom Willems's copy this has been covered with a sticker with "CB 321". Gerd Rundel has found a misprint copy on eBay where the black text is missing from the Side 2 record label - the sleeve and Side 1 label are normal.

Manuel García Jara also has a Dutch copy exported to West Germany with an accompanying black "Plattenpass [Record Passport]" booklet describing the release.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel, Tom Willems and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

The inside of the insert has the song credits, etc. The cassette is now transparent smoked grey with a distinctive striped appearance common to Australian cassette releases of this period and white printed text, there are no paper labels. Variant 2 has the same insert as variant 1, but this time the cassette case is dimpled at the bottom instead of being plain like the variant 1 cassette case (not visible in the scans). The outer case of the variant 2 copy has a white sticker with blue text promoting four tracks from the album: Political World; Ring Them Bells, Most Of The Time and Everything Is Broken.

The record comes in a transparent thin plastic inner sleeve and has unique marbled light blue CBS labels with blue text. "Oh Mercy" - CD release, Columbia CK 45281 (USA), 12 Sep 1989:

Columbia CK 45281 (USA) - front of long box, scan by Gerd Rundel

Initial copies of the US release came in a "long box". It was subsequently sold without the long box but the jewel case and the front and rear inserts were the same for both editions.

There were two different CD variants: variant 1 has "DIDP 071892" ("DIDP" = "Digital ID Popular") to the right of the centre hole below the catalogue number, but this is missing for variant 2. Variant 2 also has the copyright line at the bottom of the CD, but the scanned image has a black rim hiding it.

For the complete Wolfgang Niedecken "Chronicles Volume One" audiobook, see Honourable Mentions.

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK31" plus "DISC 35". The CDs are different in detail, the US Oh Mercy CD has catalogue number "88691924312D35", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-35". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
