Hard Rain
(1976)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Revised 16 September, 2024.

Original US stereo LP, Columbia JC 35453 (USA), 15 Jun 1978

This album was originally recorded at Rundown Studios, Santa Monica, CA, on 26-28 Apr 1978, and 1 May 1978, with overdubs on 2-3 May 1978. It was originally produced by Don DeVito. Don DeVito remixed and remastered the album in 1999, so all releases of the original 1978 album are now rarities, see 1978. However, the version of Street-Legal album in 2013's The Complete Album Collection Vol. One is one of the fourteen titles remastered by Steve Berkowitz. In this case Berkowitz went back to the original 1978 master tapes and remastered the original album. This means there are now three significantly different versions of the album on sale!

  1. The original 1978 release
  2. The 1999 remixed/remastered release
  3. The 2013 remastered version of the original album

For details of the differences between the three versions, see Les Kokay's notes below. This title was one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This version of the 1999 release is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Some titles were released in 5.1 surround sound as well as stereo, but not this one.

Detail of rear sleeve with Bob's signature

"Street-legal" is an American term for a hot rod car that has been modified to allow it to be driven on public roads. It has been suggested that the term refers to Bob's newly-divorced single status, but he's clearly wearing a wedding ring in the picture!

I originally stated that the front photograph by Howard Alk shows Bob outside the entrance to Rundown Studios, Santa Monica, CA. However, Patrick Rofflaer has discovered (thanks to work by Bob Egan and Derek Brown) that the actual location of the staircase is near 2 Pacific Terrace (the back of the house at 26 Arcadia Terrace), Santa Monica, CA.

Billy Cross played guitar on Street-Legal and also on the 1978 tour which included Bob Dylan At Budokan. He moved to Denmark in 1980. This photo of Billy’s Danish wife Lise at the Santa Monica location for the Street-Legal photo comes from Billy’s Danish-language autobiography, "Så langt så godt [So Far So Good]" (Gyldendal, Copenhagen 2009), scan by Lars M. Banke. According to the caption Billy wanted to "re-create the cover photo of Street Legal". Billy's Delta Cross Band recorded Bob's unreleased song Legionnaire's Disease on their 1981 album Up Front, also a single B-side, see Starlight In The East: Bob Dylan’s Unreleased Songs.

The rear photo is also by Howard Alk, taken live on stage during the Far East tour in early 1978. The two photographs on the inner sleeve of the vinyl album were taken by Joel Bernstein in a night club in Melbourne, Australia, on the same tour - the man with Bob on the rear of the inner sleeve is singer and guitarist George Benson.

Thanks to Moise Potié for finding the signed copy above left on a Japanese Internet auction site. Above right are front and rear of a Columbia US display card for use in record stores, found at www.eil.com.

Tracklisting:

Side 1: Changing Of The Guards; New Pony; No Time To Think; Baby Stop Crying

Side 2: Is Your Love In Vain?; Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power); True Love Tends To Forget; We Better Talk This Over; Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat).

Although there are no officially-released additional tracks from this album, the 1978 rehearsal sessions and live shows included many songs as yet unreleased such as Stepchild; Coming From The Heart (The Road Is Long); Repossession Blues; If I Don’t Be There By Morning; Walk Out In The Rain; First To Say Goodbye; Angel, What'd I Do?, etc.

Notes by Les Kokay, who used EAC to look at the track times:

The original CD CDCBS 86067 produced by Don DeVito has times 6.34.00, 4.30.70, 8.22.70 ....
Whereas the ones included in the 'two originals' CDCBS 86067 and the 3CD set 'original 123' CD 32389 2 both have the same (but different to the original CD) times 6.35.45, 4.30.65, 8.23.05 ...,, when I take these tracks and compare then in CoolEdit's mixer they are identical except that they have been chopped up differently to the original CD. In other words the silence before and after the tracks is treated differently.

The remastered CD K 65974 1999 new mix by Don DeVito has times 7.04.52, 4.40.05, 8.23.60 ... These are the same times found on the SACD (2003) and it seems identical to the compatible layer on the SACD. These timings are the same on the 'The 70's collection) 88697 70339 2-9 with two variations track #6 is 5.45.70 cf 5.44.00 and final track #9 is 6.15.26 instead of 6.15.25. The music is identical and the difference for track #6 is that there is an additional 1.7s of silence at the end of the track. However the Japanese mini LP MHCP 397 has these times 7.04.45, 4.40.05, 8.23.60 ... but all these variations are in the leading and trailing silences resulting from the way the tracks were cut, as the music is identical. This variation is much louder than the original 1978 CD.

The Complete Album Collection Vol. 1 [remastered by Steve Berkowitz] 2013
This one has times 6.40.55, 4.29.52, 8.20.50 ....
I'm not aware of this mix being available anywhere else.

The 2013 mix is very close to the original 1978 mix but I noticed/confirmed the following:
1 Changing Of The Guards - the premature fade of the original has been fixed so you now hear the drums finish.
2 No Time To Think - the vocals have been noticeably brought forward
3. Is Your Love In Vain? - there is more presence; it is wider and fuller
4. True Love Tends To Forget - the new mix is less muddy
5. Where Are You Tonight? - the fade starts later but is faster, so the length of the music is the same.

This 2013 mix is much the same volume as the original 1978 mix.

Finally the fade from "Señor" to True Love... needs a comment. On the original vinyl, Señor faded into True Love..., however the original 1978 CD did not have this but instead had 3.6 seconds of silence between tracks 6 and 7. This gap varied between the various mixes with the minimum of 3.5 seconds on the remaster, 3.9 seconds on the SACD to 5.6 seconds on The 70s Collection. It has, however, been restored on the 2013 Berkowitz mix.

Les has also examined the occurrences of Changing Of The Guards on The Essential Bob Dylan, The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 3 and the 2007 Dylan 3CD set. Their lengths indicate which versions these are: only on The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2 is it 7.04 (the 1999 remix), the others are 6.34-6.38 which would indicate that they are variations of the original 1978 version. Larry Crum confirms that the version on the 2007 Dylan 3CD set is actually an edited version of the 1999 remix and not the original version as expected!

Since this album was re-released on CD in 1999 in a remastered and remixed form, the differences on the original album from the 1999 release have become rarities! All vinyl and tape releases of the original 1978 album are now rarities, so are also listed in 1978.

Columbia JC 35453 (USA) -
front with timing strip,
scan by Gerd Rundel (promo release variant 1)

Gerd Rundel's promo copy comes with a Columbia Records radio station timing strip on the front sleeve. This timing strip has black text and the album song titles are in upper case. There is a gold embossed "FOR PROMOTION ONLY" stamp on the upper left corner of the rear sleeve. Gerd's record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 35453-2B, Side 2 - P BL 35453-2F. The front sleeve of Paul Shenton's promo copy has a different timing strip with grey text and with the album song titles in upper/lower case. The rear sleeve has the same gold promo stamp at top left as shown. Paul's record has white promo labels of the variant I've called "1A" and matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 35453-2A (handwritten), Side 2 - P BL 35453-2A (stamped).

Paul Melone has two commercial copies - the first has a black sticker promoting Baby Stop Crying, while the second has a different black sticker promoting Changing Of The Guards and Baby Stop Crying.

Columbia JC 35453 (USA) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (all copies)

Gerd Rundel's first commercial copy has the same matrix numbers as Jon Wilson's promo copy! Gerd has a second commercial copy in the same outer and inner sleeve as shown but with different record labels. The black text is significantly fainter, and the text "Produced by Don DeVito" is on two lines instead of one (the same as the Gerd's second white label promo copy shown). The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 35453-2G, Side 2 - P BL 35453-2A.

Jon Wilson's promo copy has white Columbia labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 35453-2A (handwritten), Side 2 - P BL 35453-2A (stamped). It has a black picture inner sleeve. The sleeve is not shaped, but has a raised edge on the rear to make removing the record easier. Renaud Depierreux has a promo copy with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 35453-2C, Side 2 - P BL 35453-2C. Simon Blokker's promo copy (variant 1) has the same matrix numbers as John Wilson's promo copy: Side 1 - P AL 35453-2A (handwritten), Side 2 - P BL 35453-2A (stamped).

Manuel García Jara's commercial copy comes in the same sleeve but has a record pressed at Columbia's plant at Santa Maria, CA, where the record labels have "Produced by Don DeVito" on one line. I have called this variant 1B and Gerd's first copy variant 1A. The only difference between variants 1A and 1B is that on Manuel's copy the album title is shown as "STREET-LEGAL" whereas on both promo and commercial copies of variant 1A (and variant 2) it is shown as "STREET LEGAL" (no hyphen). The record of Manuel's copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 35453-2C S I, Side 2 - P BL 35453-2C S (note the added "S" on both side).

Because promo copies exist for record label variants 1A and 2, I assume they and commercial variant 1B are concurrent first releases, from different Columbia processing plants, not first and second releases.

Thanks to Ulf Gyllenspetz, Jon Wilson, Gerd Rundel, Manuel García Jara, Paul Shenton and Paul Melote for information and pictures.

"Street-Legal" - stereo vinyl LP release, Columbia JC 35453 (USA for export), late 1970s:

Columbia JC 35453 (USA for export) - front scan by Lars M. Banke

This US copy was bought in Sweden and has the Columbia logo at rear bottom right covered by a sticker with "SKIV GROSSISTEN [RECORD WHOLESALERS]" (in two words).

Columbia JC 35453 (USA for export) - Side 2 with "SKIVGROSSISTEN" ring-shaped sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke

The record labels have red ring-shaped stickers covering the ring of "Columbia" logos with the text "SKIVGROSSISTEN" now in one word in yellow. The matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - PAL 35453 2A (handwritten), Side 2- P BL 35453 – 2E (stamped).

Lars M. Banke says: "The sticker “Skivgrossisten” indicates that it is put on the label by the wholesale company that imports these records and sells them to retail shops. Why this wholesale company found it necessary to put the sticker on the discs, I do not know. Also I do not know why this one was not “stickered” like the other export copies – with CBS stickers or “neutral” stickers. The company “Skivgrossisten” was located in Skövde in Central Sweden and ceased trading in 2008. The purpose of the company was to “do retail business with music-related products like phonograms and other business in accordance herewith” [my translation]. A bit funny that it mentions retail business as the purpose when the name indicates wholesale business. “Skivgrossisten” was also in the 1970s the name of a (retail) record shop in Drottningsgatan in Stockholm. In fact it was a chain with three shops – mainly selling so-called “cut-out” LPs. So perhaps it is more likely that it was this “Skivgrossisten” shop who has put the sticker on the “Budokan” album? Or perhaps “Skivgrossisten” was one single company, meaning that the (mother) company in Skövde owned the three shops in Stockholm?"

Lars and Manuel García Jara have copies of John Wesley Harding and Bob Dylan At Budokan bought in Sweden with the same “Skivgrossisten” stickers on the sleeve and record labels.

Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

Street-LegalUS8TrkFront.jpg (11797 bytes)
Columbia JCA 35453 (USA) - front of slipcase, scan by Stuart Moore
8-track was a continuous tape cartridge format, with four stereo "programs" per tape. The track order was rearranged to make all four programs of roughly equivalent length:

Program 1: Changing Of The Guards; Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power)
Program 2: True Love Tends To Forget; No Time To Think
Program 3: Baby Stop Crying; Is Your Love In Vain?; New Pony (Part I)
Program 4: New Pony (Part II); We Better Talk This Over; Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat).

The 1978 record has a shaped card inner sleeve and orange/yellow CBS labels. The record of my copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 86067-A4, Side 2 - CBS S 86067-B1.

Gerd Rundel has found a copy where the Side 1 label is misprinted, with no orange colour which means that the yellow logo above "CBS" is missing.

Gerd Rundel has a late 1970s copy with catalogue number "S CBS 86067" in the same outer sleeve and shaped inner sleeve as my 1978 copy. The record labels have a different text layout and the "LC|0149" capsule has been added to the right of the centre hole below "33 RPM". "MADE IN ENGLAND" is still at the bottom of the labels. The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 86067 A3, Side 2 - CBS S 86067 B4.

Gerd has an early 1980s copy, later than the first copy in this section, that comes in the same outer and inner sleeve as the 1980s releases below (with a square inner sleeve, not shaped), where the record still has orange/yellow CBS labels, but this time with catalogue number of just "CBS 86067" (no "S"), like the 1984 copy below. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 86067 A3, Side 2 - CBS S 86067 B9. Another "CBS 86067" copy owned by Gerd comes in the same 1980s sleeve as shown below with "57" at rear top right, but this time there is CBS copyright information at the bottom of the orange/yellow CBS labels, with "MADE IN ENGLAND" moved to the right hand circumference text. This second early 1980s copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-86067-A-3, Side 2 - CBS-S-86067-B-9.

The front sleeve of the 1984 release is the same as shown above. The rear sleeve is also the same except for the number ”57” in a circle in the top right hand corner. The 1984 record comes in the same inner sleeve as my 1978 copy but the sleeve is now square, not shaped. The 1984 record has red CBS labels and the catalogue number is just "CBS 86067" (no prefix "S", like the two early 1980s copies above). Like the second early 1980s release above, "MADE IN ENGLAND" is now in the circumference text to the right of the centre hole. The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 86067 A3, Side 2 - CBS-S-86067-B-9.

The front and rear sleeves of the late 1980s release are the same as that of the 1984 release. The record comes in the same square original printed inner sleeve as the record of the 1984 release, and again has red CBS labels, but now reverts to the original catalogue number "S CBS 86067". The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 86067-A4, Side 2 - CBS-S-86067-B-9. Apart from the catalogue number, the only difference that I can see between the 1984 and the late 1980s record labels is that the white CBS copyright information at the bottom of the 1984 label has been moved to the circumference text of the late 1980s label.

Thanks to Colin Baker, Manuel García Jara and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

The second copy shown has what looks like the same insert, although the text on the spine and rear of the outside of the insert has been printed slightly lower. This time the cassette has blue text.

Gerd Rundel has found a copy on eBay which has "MADE IN ENGLAND" in addition to "Made in Ireland" at the bottom of the record labels. Lars M. Banke's copy of this first variant has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 86067 A5, Side 2 - CBS S 86067 B3. Gerd has a second copy with variant labels - all text (except for the album title and “BOB DYLAN”) is printed in a higher position than on the labels of Lars' first variant. There is more space between “MADE IN IRELAND” and “MADE IN ENGLAND” at the bottom of the labels. The record of this copy has matrix numbers that are the same as those of Lars' first variant.

The second variant has only "Made in Ireland" at the bottom of the labels. Manuel García Jara's copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 86067 A5, Side 2 - CBS S 86067 B3. Lars M. Banke has a second variant copy with a slight difference on the Side 1 record label - to the right of the centre hole "33 RPM" is printed much higher. The Side 2 record label appears the same as Manuel's. This copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 86067 A5, Side 2 - CBS S 86067 B2.

There may also be copies with record labels with the alternative text "Record mfd. in Ireland" - information required.

CBS 86067 (NL), 15 Jun 1978:

CBS 86067 (NL) - front with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel (1978 release)

The 1978 release has a pale blue front sticker with white text "Contains All New Songs" plus the track list. Simon Blokker has a copy with an extra black/white sticker with "WARNING - THIS RECORD IS NOT SUITABLE FOR MINORS"! Manuel García Jara thinks this may have been added by a library - it was certainly not normal for copies sold in record shops.

The record has a picture inner sleeve, not shaped like the UK release, orange/yellow CBS labels. "STREET-LEGAL" is above "BOB DYLAN" above the centre hole. Sergio Mariano Romay's copy also comes with a double-sided lyrics insert, The record of Gerd Rundel's copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86067-4A-2, Side 2 - 01-86067-1B-2.

CBS 86067 (NL), second release - 1980s(?):

CBS 86067 (NL) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (second release)

This mysterious release has a record with red CBS labels (used first in Holland for Biograph in Nov 1985) but which still has the original catalogue number of CBS 86067. The sleeve and label design of this copy are very similar to that of the 1978 release. The rear sleeve has "CB|271" in a white rectangle and "54" in a circle below at top right (different from both the 1978 release above and the two mid-1980s copies below). This copy has the same inner sleeve and lyrics insert as the 1978 release. On the labels "STREET-LEGAL" is again above "BOB DYLAN" above the centre hole and the song titles are again left-aligned. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86067-3A-1, Side 2 - CBS 01-86067-2B-2. These are the same as those of Ronald Born's copy of CBS 32389 with orange/yellow labels below.

CBS 32389 (NL) - front scan by Hans Seegers (mid-1980s releases, no sticker)
This album was re-released in 1984-85 with a new catalogue number, CBS 32389. It has the same inner sleeve as above with the CBS 86067 catalogue number. There was no front sleeve sticker. The labels are different from those of both of the CBS 86067 releases above. On both sets of labels "BOB DYLAN" is above "STREET-LEGAL" above the centre hole and the song titles are now centred.

The record of Ronald Born's copy still has orange/yellow CBS labels and this copy had stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86067-3A-1, Side 2 - CBS 01-86067-2B-2. Hans Seegers' later copy came in the same sleeve and inner sleeve but this time the record had red CBS labels, so dates from after Nov 1985.

Columbia COL 32389 1 (NL) - front with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel (1991 release)
Dag Braathen has a copy of the album in a 1991 Columbia sleeve, but where the record still has the red CBS 32389 labels above. Gerd Rundel has a copy in exactly the same sleeve where the record now has these 1991 red Columbia 32389 1 labels. The front sleeve has a “DYLAN ORIGINALS NICE PRICE” sticker. The rear sleeve has some differences: there is a barcode and new catalogue number "COL 32389 1" at top right, the "LC|0149" capsule is missing at bottom right, and there is different copyright text at the bottom. The record comes in the regular picture inner sleeve. The outer sleeve contains a double sided “DYLAN ORIGINALS” insert with details of other Dylan albums in the series (other 1991 Dylan releases that didn't originally come with a picture inner sleeve had an inner sleeve that was exactly the same as this).

"Street-Legal" - original stereo vinyl LP release, CBS 86067 (Spain for NL), 1978:

CBS 86067 (Spain for NL) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (both variants)

This 1978 release comes with sleeve and labels like the Dutch release, but with "Made in Spain" in English on the rear sleeve. The sleeve is made by "Indugraf ALCORCON – Madrid" and has Spanish copyright text. The Discos CBS Spanish address is Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16. The rear sleeve of Hans Seegers' copy has no symbols at top right. The rear sleeve of Ger Hemel's copy has a white sticker with "CB|271" and "54" in a circle. Peeling back the sticker reveals "SE" in a circle underneath it.

The record labels have the Dutch "BIEM/STEMRA" copyright organisation logo. All label text is in English, no Spanish, and the catalogue number is just "86067" (again as the Dutch release). The labels also say "MADE IN SPAIN" but Manuel García Jara is sure the album was actually made for the Dutch market to meet excess demand, he does not think they were ever sold in Spain because they don't have the "SGAE" Spanish copyright logo. On these record labels the album title is "STREET-LEGAL", on the first Spanish record labels below the title is "STREET LEGAL" without the hyphen.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Manuel García Jara and Ger Hemel for information and scans.

"Street-Legal" - original stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS 86067 (Italy), 15 Jun 1978:

The record in the Italian release of CBS 86067 has the original inner sleeve and orange/yellow labels. "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" is aligned as if "SUGAR" has been omitted. The record of the copy shown has written matrix numbers: Side 1 - CI CBS 86067-1L DYLAN 12-6-78, Side 2 - CI 86067-2L/3 15 6-78. (12 Jun 1978 and 15 Jun 1978 are the mastering dates).

Warning - Manuel García Jara bought an "extremely rare Italian promotional pressing of Street-Legal with white labels" from an Italian seller on eBay only to find it was a regular Dutch copy as above with photocopied Italian labels in black and white glued over the orange/yellow labels! He complained to PayPal but the seller had disappeared. It's very probable such copies do not actually exist.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

There were no special promo copies of this Spanish release, but the folded leaflet above was sent out with commercial copies of the first release of the album sent to radio stations and journalists. The front has a contemporary Dylan photo also used for 1978 singles releases and notes by Spanish journalist Diego A. Manrique. The rear has pictures of twenty Dylan albums up to The Basement Tapes. Inside the leaflet are the lyrics of the Street-Legal songs in English. The leaflet was printed by Offset ALG, San Raimundo, 31, Madrid-20.

CBS S 86067 (Spain) - "test pressing" Side 1, picture from eBay
Gerd Rundel has found what purports to be a Spanish test pressing of Street-Legal on eBay. It comes in a plain sleeve and has white labels with stamped text.

Manuel García Jara says: "I think it's a fake. The information printed on labels was made with a letter mould like the ones we used in school and the ink is not oxidised. Test pressings made by Discos CBS in Spain either had orange or plain white labels with handwritten text."

The record apparently has US matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 35453-2A, Side 2 - PBL 35453 2A. These are the same as those of the genuine first release copy listed below, so it's possible this is a genuine record with fake labels.

The sleeve was printed by Offset ALG, San Raimundo, 31, Madrid-20, as was the picture inner sleeve. The Discos CBS address shown is Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16.

The record labels have a Spanish "Deposito Legal" number and the logo of the Spanish copyright organisation "SGAE". The layout of the song titles and the position of "33" beneath "ESTEREO" to the left of the centre hole is different between the first and second releases. The copy of the first release shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 35453 2A, Side 2 - PBL 35453 2A (US matrix numbers). On these record labels the album title is "STREET LEGAL" (no hyphen), on the record labels made in Spain for the Dutch market above the title is "STREET-LEGAL" (with hyphen).

Ger Hemel's copy has two 12" double-sided inserts, one with the song lyrics, and one with a Dylan discography. Manuel says these inserts were not actually included with the very first release, but with subsequent releases from 1978 to 1980. The Side 1 label is a variant of Manuel's first release Side 1 label, with the same text layout left and right of the centre hole as the first release, different from that of the second and third release). However it has a "2" at the end of line one. like the Side 1 labels of the second and third release. The Side 2 label is the same as Manuel's first release Side 2.

Lars M. Banke's third release copy has two stickers from Club Amigos Del Disco (a record store in Madrid) on the rear sleeve. The record labels have the same song titles layout as those of the second release, but the position of "33" beneath "ESTEREO" to the left of the centre hole is the same as on the first release labels (this may be an intermediate release between the two others). The record of the third copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 86067-A◊, Side 2 - 86067-B◊ (the "◊" character looks like a diamond but could be an "O").

Lars M. Banke has a copy of what must be a fourth release in the same sleeve without stickers, dating from the late 1970s/early 1980s. The record labels have a new song title layout with the album title now "STREET-LEGAL" instead of "STREET LEGAL". There are now arrows under "ESTEREO" to the left of the centre hole. "33" is now on the line as "ESTEREO" as on the 1983 labels. This is the same layout as the 1983 release of CBS 32389 below (apart from the catalogue number and the "1983" date) so that Side 2 has the "jour-ney" mistake highlighted below. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 86067 A, Side 2 - 86067 B.

Manuel also has a copy of Street-Legal made in Spain for export to Portugal with "SPA" (Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores) instead of "SGAE" on the record labels to the right of the centre hole - scans to be added.

Street-Legal was reissued in 1983 in the CBS "PRECIO REDONDO [NICE PRICE]" series with a new catalogue number, CBS 32389. Only earliest albums of this series have a sticker like this, with the price printed on it: "max. 600 pts." = "máximo 600 pesetas" (today €3.60). The 1983 release of this album is very important in that it was the model for all the subsequent reissues. From now on, all the reissues have the same catalogue number, 32389, the same sleeve and the same record labels. The following description matches all the subsequent releases:

  1. The sleeve, apart from price stickers, has the same rear: unlike the 1978 releases, tracklist and credits are now only in English, the CBS logo is smaller than in 1970s releases, the Discos CBS address is Paseo de la Castellana, 93 - Madrid 16, and the printer now is Indugraf instead of Offset, ALG.
  2. The inner sleeve is no longer included
  3. The most important: the quality of sound was good on both sides of the records of 1978, but now Side 1 has a low quality of sound.
  4. Labels are very different and are in fact almost the same as the fourth release of CBS 86067 above with the album title as "STREET-LEGAL"; there is a stereo arrows logo under the word "Estéreo"; "Depósito legal" with 1983 date at the bottom; the tracklist on Side 1 has "2. NUEVO PONY" completely on the second line. The Side 2 label has a difference repeated for track 5 : as on the record labels of 1978, the title is listed over four lines: the last line is "heat) - 6'16" but in 1978 it was "dark heat) - 6'16" and there is a mistake in this title: "jour-ney through..." (again as on the fourth release of CBS 86067)

The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 86067-A0 (stamped)  32389-A (handwritten), Side 2 - PBL-35453-2E (stamped) 86067-B (handwritten) 32389-B (handwritten).

The 1984 release has the same sleeve as the 1983 release. This time the CBS "PRECIO REDONDO [NICE PRICE]" sticker is without a price. The record labels are identical to those of the 1983 release except for the text around the circumference. The 1986 release again has the same sleeve, this time without a front sticker. The record labels are identical to those of the 1984 release except that they are now red instead of orange/yellow. The record was still made by Discos CBS itself.

The 1988 release shown is a extremely rare copy pressed exclusively for CBS commercial agents: the rear sleeve has stamped promo text in gold " DISCO PROMOCIONAL Propiedad de CBS PROHIBIDA SU VENTA [PROMOTIONAL RECORD Property of CBS SALE PROHIBITED". This record has also red labels but now it was made by Tecnodisco S.A. on behalf of CBS. The 1989 release again has the same sleeve. The rear sleeve has a price sticker of El Corte Inglés (995 pesetas= €6.00). The record was again made by Tecnodisco S.A. on behalf of CBS and the longer text around the circumference than that of the 1988 release labels includes the Tecnodisco telephone number.

CBS/Sony 32389 (Spain) - front with "NICE PRICE" sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (1992 release)
The 1992 release was the last vinyl release of this album in Spain, made by Tecnodisco S.A. of Madrid for CBS/Sony with the new catalogue number, first used for this album in 1983 when it was released in the "Nice Price" series above. The front is identical to that of previous releases. Lars M. Banke's copy has a Sony Music English language "NICE PRICE" front sticker. The sleeve was again printed by Indugraf of Madrid and is identical to that of the 1983 release. The rear sleeve still has the CBS catalogue number at the bottom, along with the 1983 copyright text. The Discos CBS address shown is still "Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16" (which is actually incorrect, because it should have been "Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046 Madrid" by this time, as on other Spanish Dylan albums).

The 1978 record was made in Greece and has orange/yellow CBS labels with English and Greek text.

CBS 32389/86067 (NL/Greece), mid-1980s:

CBS 32389 (NL for Greece) - front with CBS "Nice Price" sticker, scan by Ger Hemel (mid-1980s release in Dutch sleeve)
This mid-1980s Greek release comes in a Dutch sleeve, identical to that contributed by Hans Seegers, "CBS 32389" (1984-85), above. The only difference is the Greek "Nice Price" sticker on the front. The album comes in a clear plastic sleeve which has a sticker from a Greek record shop called "Music Hall".

The record was made in Greece and still has catalogue number "CBS 86867", but the orange/yellow CBS labels have a completely different design from the those of the Greek 1978 record. It now has two lines of circumference text but the Greek text at the bottom of the labels is missing. The album title and artist name are now below the centre hole instead of above, while the text layout to the left and right of the centre hole and the layout of the song titles are totally different. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 86067 A (handwritten). Side 2- 86067 B (handwritten) P BL 35453-2L (stamped).

CBS 32389 (Greece), late 1980s:

CBS 32389 (Greece) - front with "Nice Price" CBS sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (late 1980s release)

The late 1980s Greek release has a laminated sleeve with the same front blue/yellow circle and a "Nice Price" CBS front sticker. The album has a new catalogue number, CBS 32389, and the rear sleeve has different text at the bottom right corner as shown. The record now has red CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32389 (handwritten), Side 2 - 32389 (handwritten) plus P BL 35453-2PL (stamped).

"Street-Legal" - original stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS/Suzy 86067 (Yugoslavia), 1978 (four releases):

CBS 86067 (Yugoslavia) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (first and second releases)

I have listed four Yugoslavia releases of the album, all manufactured under licence for CBS by Suzy Records of Zagreb (now Croatia). The records were pressed in Yugoslavia by Diskos of Aranđelovac, now in Serbia (Suzy Records were normally pressed by Jugoton, also of Zagreb, although one release of The Last Waltz, from 1978 as well, was also pressed by Diskos, this time for Warner Bros).

All these albums had the regular inner sleeve, but a folded lyric insert was included with the last three releases only. The first and second release front sleeves are the same as the UK release.

CBS 86067 (Yugoslavia) - Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (fourth release)

Lars M. Banke has a copy of the album where the record labels are significantly different from those of the other two, and I'm calling this the second release because it has the same outer and inner sleeves as the first release, but it also has the lyrics insert not present with the first release. The second front sleeve does not have the gold star and "ZLATNA" that are on the front of the third and fourth releases. The song titles on the record labels are noticeably different from those of the first and third releases!

Side 1: Song titles are on four lines instead of five, “Produced by Don DeVito” is on one line only, while it is on two lines on the other Side 1 record labels
Side 2: Song titles are on six lines instead of seven, "Journey Through Dark Heat" is misspelled as "Journey Through Darke Heat", Dylan is misspelled as "Dulan".

The third release had a gold star printed on the front (not a sticker) with the text "ZLATNA [GOLD]", and was released after the album achieved "gold" sales in Yugoslavia. The rear sleeve and inner sleeve are the same as the previous two releases. It again has a lyrics insert. The labels have the same text layout as those of the first release, with one significant difference - there is a gap between the catalogue number and "SOKOJ" on the second and third release labels. ("SOKOJ" is the artists' organisation (Federation of Organisations of Composers of Yugoslavia) founded in 1976.)

Lars M. Banke additionally has two copies of the first release in the regular sleeve and two copies of what I've called the third release in the "ZLATNA" sleeve. The record labels of all four have slightly different placements of the text elements to the left and right of the centre holes from the labels shown but I've not included them to reduce the complexity of what is a very confusing set of Yugoslav releases (the Yugoslav releases of Desire are equally confusing, if not more so).

The fourth Yugoslav variant of the album comes with a front sleeve that again has the "ZLATNA" star. The rear sleeve, inner sleeve and the lyric sheet are identical to those of the previous releases. The record labels of Sides 1 and 2 are different from the other releases already shown, and are also different from one another - The Side 1 label has one song per line over seven lines, but the Side 2 label has the song titles as continuous text over eight lines. Like the second release Side 2 label, it also has the misspelled title "Journey Through Darke Heat" but "Bob Dylan" is correct (not "Bob Dulan").

The handwritten matrix numbers of all four copies shown are: Side 1 - CBS 86067 A 81278, Side 2 - CBS 86067 B 81278.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

Thanks to Peter Lindberg for information that the first release in 1978 differed from releases from 1979 onwards in that the songs were just copyrighted to "Control" on both the labels and the lyrics sheet. On later releases the songs were copyrighted to "Albert", and then to "Warner Bros". The Warner Bros labels also have "STREET LEGAL" and "BOB DYLAN" on two lines.

CBS SBP 237187 (Australia) - Side 2 scan by Stuart Moore (copyright "Warner Bros")

Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. Despite the fact that the first release of this album was in 1978, the labels with the "Control" copyright still have the shorter text. The labels with the "Albert" and "Warner Bros" copyrights have the later longer text. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)

Thanks to Stuart Moore and Peter Lindberg for information and scans.

CBS PC 7187 (Australia) - cassette Side 2 scan by Stuart Moore (early 1980s release - songs copyrighted by "Chappell")

These releases have a crop of the sleeve photo and just the track titles, no sleeve notes or other artwork. The first release from 1978 has a short insert with the tracklisting on the inside. The first release cassette is white with off-white labels and the songs are copyrighted by "Albert".

The second release from the late 1970s has a longer folded insert that is now blank on the inside. The second release cassette is again white with off-white labels, but the songs are now copyrighted by "Control".

The third release (early 1980s) comes with the same insert and the cassette is now off-white with blue text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. The songs are now copyrighted by "Chappell". The copy shown has a "Nice Price" sticker on the front of the outer case.

PC 7187 was also included in a 1989 CBS Australia boxed set called Bob Dylan Collection, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 1980s. The insert looks identical to that of the second and third releases but the cassette is now transparent smoked grey with a unique "striped" appearance and white text printed directly on to the case, there are again no paper labels.

"Street-Legal" - original stereo vinyl LP, CBS SBP 237187 (New Zealand), 1978:

CBS SBP 237187 (New Zealand) - front sleeve scan by Bill Hester
This release has the same catalogue number as the Australian release, and probably uses the same outer sleeve, inner sleeve and lyrics insert. The record itself was made in New Zealand. Like the 1978 Australian release above the songs are copyrighted to "Control" on the lyrics sheet and record labels.

Thanks to Bill Hester for information and scans.

Front of cassette insert, photo by William Henry Prince
This unofficial tape copy from Sonny's Tape Gallery, Tehran, Iran, also contains Romance In Durango and Mozambique from Desire on Side 2. It almost certainly dates from before the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The front picture reproduces the original Dutch album sleeve above complete with blue and white sticker! Full details are in Questionable Releases.

King's PCT 35453 (Indonesia) - front picture from www.discogs.com
The King's unofficial cassette release from Indonesia comes in a plastic case with a wrap-around insert similar in construction to a DVD case. It purports to be an official CBS release, but the cassette is unlabeled and was made by BASF. The front picture reproduces an LP sleeve with a yellow "Nice Price" sticker!

The Contessa unofficial tape copy comes in a regular cassette case and also contains the live 1976 versions of Shelter From The Storm and Stuck Inside Of Mobile with The Memphis Blues Again from Hard Rain on Side 2. The front picture again reproduces the original Dutch album sleeve above complete with blue and white sticker!

"Street-Legal" - original stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS DNW 2140 (South Africa), 1978; CBS COL 40074 (South Africa), 1985:

CBS DNW 2140 (South Africa), 1978:

CBS DNW 2140 (South Africa) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
This album was made by Gramophone Record Co. (Pty) Ltd. (part of EMI) for CBS Records. The sleeve was printed by Interpak. The front is laminated and it has a strange chequered design of small black squares at the top edge. The rear sleeve has a CBS logo and information about the manufacturer and printer. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels (this was the first South African Dylan release to have them) and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - DNW-2140-AL-35453, Side 2 - DNW-2140-BL-35453.

CBS COL 40074 (South Africa), 1985:

CBS COL 40074 (South Africa) - front with sticker, photocopy by Paul Shenton
This reissue from 1985 was again made in South Africa by the Gramophone Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (part of EMI) for CBS Records as part of the "Star Spectacular" series, the equivalent in South Africa of "Nice Price". The record labels are dated "1985" as well as "1978".

The sleeve was now printed by Artone Press and there is a front sticker with a barcode at bottom right. The record again has orange/yellow CBS labels and on Side 2 Journey Through Dark Heat is misprinted as "Journey Through Dark Heart". This mistake did not occur on the 1978 Side 2 label. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - COL 40074-A, Side 2 - COL 40074-B.

CBS DNW 2140 (Rhodesia), 1978:

CBS DNW 2140 (
Rhodesia) - front scan by Lars M. Banke
These releases have sleeves made of very flimsy paper, not laminated. Although they have the same catalogue number as the 1978 South African release, the front sleeves do not have the chequered design of small black squares at the top edge.

Instead of the Interpak printer's name, these rear sleeves have "4-A" indicating Belmont Printers of Bulawayo at bottom right. Belmont Printers used codes starting with "4" for sleeves they printed for CBS Records, they used other codes for other record companies. The first record has distinctive Rhodesian white CBS labels with blue text and a blue CBS logo in a box, used in Rhodesia from late 1976 to 1980.

There was also a cassette release, CBS 40 2140 - scans required! It will be similar to the South African cassette release but with an insert printed by Belmont Printers.

CBS DNW 2140 (Zimbabwe), mid-1980s:

CBS DNW 2140 (Zimbabwe) - front scan by Lars M. Banke

After Zimbabwean independence, CBS record labels were orange/yellow from late 1980 to 1986. The original owner has written a date of "28/11/85" (28 Nov 1985) on the front sleeve and both record labels. The rear sleeve this time has both "4-A" and "Belmont Printers in a white box at bottom right. The record was marketed and distributed by the Gramophone Record Co. (Pty.) Ltd., a subsidiary of EMI, and the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-35453 DNW 2140, Side 2 - BL-35453 DNW 2140.

This reissue is the equivalent of the 1985 South African release with the same catalogue number, part of the "Star Spectacular" series. The record labels are dated "1985" as well as "1978", but because of the white label style I believe it to be from later in the 1980s (after 1986). Like several other Zimbabwean albums illustrated on this site, the rear sleeve has a record store sticker from "MUSIC", Old Mutual Arcade, Abercorn Street, Salisbury (now Harare). The rear sleeve again has "4A" and "Belmont Printers" at bottom right. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - COL 40074 A, Side 2 - COL 40074 B.

The front sleeve has a white CBS logo below the album title and an "ESTEREO SONIDO 360 [360 STEREO SOUND]" logo at centre top, unusual for an album as late as 1978. The musician and other credits on the rear sleeve are in English. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with song titles translated in Spanish as well as the album title. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 0211-12946-1A, Side 2 - 0211-12947-1A. Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy exactly the same in the standard picture inner sleeve. Unlike several other worldwide releases, the inner sleeve has no catalogue number on the front or rear.

Manuel García Jara says:

"Note the different translations in the Spanish-speaking countries. This album was released in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Colombia and Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, the titles are in English only. Argentina and Uruguay have the same sleeve and the same translations.

  1. Changing Of The Guards: Cambio de guardia (Spain, Argentina/Uruguay); Cambio de guardias (Mexico); Cambio de la guardia (Venezuela); Cambio de los guardias (Colombia)

  2. New Pony: Nuevo pony (Spain, Colombia); Pony nuevo (Mexico, Argentina/Uruguay, Venezuela)
The Spanish translation of "Pony" is actually "Poni".

  3. No Time To Think: Sin tiempo para pensar (Spain, Mexico, Argentina/Uruguay); Ningún tiempo para pensar (Venezuela); No hay tiempo para pensar (Colombia)

  4. Baby, Stop Crying: Nena, deja de llorar (Spain, Mexico, Argentina/Uruguay); Nena, no llores (Venezuela); Nena, para de llorar (Colombia)

  5. Is Your Love In Vain?: ¿Tu amor es en vano? (Spain) ¿Es tu amor en vano? (Mexico, Argentina/Uruguay, Venezuela, Colombia)

  6. Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power): Señor (Cuentos del poder yanqui) (Spain); Señor (Cuentos del poderío yankee) (Mexico); Not translated (Argentina/Uruguay); Señor (Cuentos del poder yankee) (Venezuela, Colombia)

  7. True Love Tends To Forget: El verdadero amor es olvidadizo (Spain); El verdadero amor perdona (Mexico); El amor verdadero tiende a olvidarse (Argentina/Uruguay); El amor verdadero a veces se olvida (Venezuela); El verdadero amor tiende a olvidarse (Colombia)

  8. We Better Talk This Over: Deberíamos hablarlo (Spain); Hablemos nuevamente (Mexico); Mejor hablemos sobre esto (Argentina/Uruguay); Deberíamos conversarlo (Venezuela) Mejor que hablemos (Colombia)

  9. Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat): ¿Dónde estás esta noche?

There are some mistakes in translation: the Mexican translation of True Love Tends To Forget as "El verdadero amor perdona" (True Love Tends To Forgive) and the Colombian Journey Through Dark Heat as "Viaje a través de la oscuridad" (Journey Through Darkness)!"

Discos CBS CLS-5602 (Mexico) - front photo by Frank Fritsching (fake promo sleeve)
Frank Fritsching has what looks like "promo" release with a different sleeve which is unfortunately not genuine and similar in design to many other fake Mexican "promo" sleeves. The rear sleeve has the logo of CBS/Sony, who have never operated in Mexico.

The record labels have a promo stamp on Side 1 and a promo sticker on Side 2. Like the sleeve, Manuel García Jara thinks these are not genuine. The record is genuine and has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 0211-12946-1A, Side 2 - 0211-12947-1A |.

Discos CBS 19.901 (Argentina), 1978 (test pressings):

Discos CBS 19.901 (Argentina) - Side 1 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (test pressing 1)

Sergio Mariano Romay has a test pressing with plain white labels with handwritten text in a generic CBS promo card sleeve with a circular cut-out to show the labels. The front of the sleeve has the CBS logo and text "DISCO PARA PROMOCION [PROMOTIONAL RECORD]".

The Side 1 label also includes the catalogue number of the Argentinean cassette release (59.901). The song titles are translated in to Spanish but No Time To Think is translated as just "Sin Tiempo [No Time]". On the Side 2 label Señor (Tales of Yankee Power) is translated as just "Señor".

The Argentinean album Discos CBS 19.901 has a CBS logo on the front sleeve at top left and song titles and musician credits on the rear sleeve translated into Spanish. For notes on the various Spanish translations see the Mexican entry above. The rear sleeve also has pictures of two Dylan albums - Hard Rain and Los Mas Grande Exitos [Greatest Hits]. The record has orange/yellow Discos CBS labels with song titles translated into Spanish.

Manuel García Jara has a copy with "DISCO PARA DEMOSTRACION VENTA PROHIBIDA [DEMONSTRATION RECORD SALE PROHIBITED]" on a white sticker on the rear sleeve and stamped on the record labels. Damián Martinez has a commercial copy of the album with stickers on the record labels, probably covering up the promo text. Manuel's regular commercial record labels are also shown.

The records of all copies shown here have the same stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-35453; Side 2 - BL-35453.

This rare album was manufactured for CBS Records by Sondor S.A. in Uruguay. It has the same catalogue number as the Argentinean release above. The text pressing comes in a Sondor S.A. generic sleeve with cut-outs for the record labels. Side 1 has a card at top right with details of the album (Sergio Mariano Romay believes this is just part of the commercial cassette inlay card - see the Argentinean cassette release above), Side 2 sticker at top right with handwritten "119". The record has black CBS/Sondor S.A. orange/yellow labels with handwritten text and white stickers with handwritten "119". The text pressing record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 19901 A, Side 2 - 19901 B.

The commercial sleeve was printed in Uruguay by AS. The musician credits on the rear sleeve are in Spanish, while the song titles are in English and Spanish on the rear sleeve and record labels. For notes on the various Spanish translations see the Mexican entry above. There is no inner sleeve. On the rear sleeve of this Uruguayan release at bottom centre there are two pictures of Dylan LPs: Hard Rain (not released in Uruguay) and Los Más Grandes Éxitos De Bob Dylan [Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits] (with the erroneous front sleeve from Jul 1977 - see the appropriate page for Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, 1967)!

The record has orange/yellow CBS labels which occur in two variants. The record of the first copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 19901 A WL, Side 2 - 19901 B WL. The second label variant has four differences from the first:

  1. Under the text “Dir. Art. Don DeVito” below the song title lines the word “ESTEREO” is omitted on both sides

  2. The word “LADO [SIDE]” at top right is in a different (serif) type face on both sides

  3. The text to the left of the CBS logo is "(P) 1978"/"CBS. Inc.” on both sides - on the first variant labels this is "CBS Inc.”/"(P) 1978)"

  4. On the Side 1 label the song title lines under the centre hole are more narrowly spaced than the song title lines on Side 1 of the first variant

Scans of the cassette release required! Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

"Street-Legal" - original stereo vinyl LP, CBS CS-10.311 (Venezuela), 1978:

CBS CS-10.311 (Venezuela) - front scan by Manuel García Jara

This is the rare release of Street-Legal, released in Venezuela. It has the regular front sleeve. The rear sleeve is essentially like the US release, but it has two overprinted small panels with titles in Spanish: the CBS logo and another panel at the bottom with copyright details in Spanish, including the P.V.P. (Precio de Venta al Público [Retail Price]) for Bs. 28,00 (28 Bolívares). The labels are very strange: all the information has been bizarrely overprinted on a generic label, sometimes over the copyright text. For notes on the various Spanish translations see the Mexican entry above. There are two mistakes on track 5, Side 2: "¿Dónde estás esta noche? (Viaje a través del socuro calor) - Where are you tonight ?(Journey Through Dark)" instead of "...oscuro calor" & "...Dark Heat", but it is correct on the rear sleeve.

Columbia/Sony Music 032289 4 (India) - bottom of cassette, photocopy by Paul Shenton ("Sony Music" on leader tape)

This very rare Indian cassette release is dated "6/97" on the outside of the insert. Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) is mistitled "Tables Of Yankee Power" on the outside of the insert, but is correct on the inside of the insert and on Side 1 of the cassette. Both sides are timed at 24:55 on the inside of the insert and on the cassette sides, but this is wrong - Side 1 is actually 24:40 and Side 2 is 24:46. The cassette is transparent grey with white text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. The leader tape has "Sony Music" in blue.

Thanks to Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

All original CD releases of the original 1978 album are now rarities so are also listed in 1978.

"Street-Legal" - original CD releases, Columbia CK 35453 (USA/Canada), 1986 onwards:

Columbia CK 35453 (USA/Canada) - front scan by Moise Potié
This was the first CD release of the album in both the USA and Canada. The front insert was a single folded card with a dark red Compact Disc logo at bottom right.

Columbia CK 35453 (USA/Canada) - detail of rear insert with US and Canadian information (my copy)

There are barcodes on the rear insert and the reverse of the front insert. The CD has the inverted triangle symbol found on Side 1 of LPs and cassettes after Biograph in 1985. It also has "DIDP 020299" below the catalogue number and in the inner ring. The "DIDP" number (Digital Identification Popular) was a code used by Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) on CDs pressed in Terre Haute, IN, or one of their other CD plants in the USA, from 1983 onwards (Classical CDs had "DIDC").

My copy was bought in the USA and Moise's in Canada but they are identical apart from the positioning of the text around the CD centre hole.

Thanks to Moise Potié for information and scans.

CBS CDCBS 86067 (Europe) - front scan by Franck Faugere (1980s releases)

The European front insert is an eight-page stapled booklet. Tom Willems' copy comes with the same inserts as Franck Faugere's, but the CD has different details to the right of the centre hole. The "BIEM/STEMRA" Dutch copyright information is boxed, and "MADE IN AUSTRIA" is missing. This is because according to the circumference text this CD was made in Japan by CBS/Sony Inc., and is therefore earlier than the Austrian-made CD.

CBS CD 32389 (Europe), 1990:

CBS CD 32389 (Europe) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (1990 release)
This final CBS release came in a red CD tray and dates from 1990, just before the changeover to "Columbia". The CD was made in Austria and now has red panels, like the Columbia CD below. It has an unusual CBS catalogue number of just "CD 32389" to the right of the centre hole, the expected "CDCBS" prefix is missing. The rear insert has the same design which would be used for the 1991 Columbia release, but with "CBS" and "CD 32389" at top right. There is also an eight-page CBS "Nice Price" catalogue stapled inside the front insert booklet with date "01/90" printed at bottom right of the last page (either "Jan 1990" or "first release 1990").

Columbia CD 32389 2 (Europe), 1991:

Columbia CD 32389 2 (Europe) - front with sticker, scan by Keith Schweiger (1991 release)

The 1991 Columbia release again has a red CD tray and the copy shown has a "Dylan Originals/Nice Price" sticker on the front of the jewel case. There is also a "Dylan Originals/Nice Price" catalogue stapled in the centre of the front insert booklet. The Columbia CD is again silver with red panels and was again made in Austria. The catalogue number is now "CD 32389 2".

This remastered CD release in a card sleeve is part of the 47CD boxed set The Complete Album Collection Vol. One. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for pointing out this is a remastered version of the original 1978 album, so for example Changing Of The Guards reverts to its original length of 6:37, instead of the extended version at 7:06 from the 1999 remixed release below.

Columbia 86067 1/Simply Vinyl SVLP 197 (UK) - front with sticker, scan by Hans Seegers (first 2000 release)

The 2000 promo release has a generic Simply Vinyl sleeve with a printed label giving the album details on the front. The record itself has Simply Vinyl generic promo labels without text, same both sides.

The commercial Simply Vinyl limited edition comes in a plastic sleeve with a silver foil sticker. The record comes in the standard inner sleeve, square not shaped. The first 2000 commercial labels have two mistakes - on both sides the original release date is shown as "(P) 1972" (it should be "1978") and on Side 2 track 3 is shown as "WE BEETER TALK THIS OVER"! Also unusual is that Is Your Love In Vain is track 5 on Side 1 instead of track 1 on Side 2!

The second 2000 commercial release also comes in a plastic sleeve but with a different gold foil front sticker. The record is quite different. Is Your Love In Vain has been restored to track 1 on Side 2 as for the 1978 releases, and the two record label errors have been corrected. Ronald Born's corrected copy comes in a plain inner sleeve with the original inner sleeve replaced by a double-sided insert with the artwork.

"Street-Legal" - stereo cassette release, Columbia CT 65974 (USA), 1999:

Columbia CT 65974 (USA) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (1999 release)
This release from 1999 with catalogue number CT 65974 has a folded insert and a transparent smoked grey cassette with white text. "MADE IN USA" is embossed at top right of Side 1 (very difficult to see). Scans of the inside of the insert and Side 2 required.
The cassette is copyrighted 1978 and 1999 so this is the remastered version.

Columbia Legacy 19075907301 (USA/Europe) - front scan by Gerd Rundel
This 2019 album is the first vinyl release in the USA of the 1999 remix. This means Changing Of The Guards is the 1999 extended version timed at 7:04, although it's incorrectly timed at 6:36 on the Side 1 label.

Columbia Legacy 19075907301 (USA/Europe) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel

Columbia Legacy 19075907301 (USA/Europe) - Side 2  scan by Gerd Rundel

This is a "We are vinyl" series release that includes a MP3 download code of the album. The front sleeve is the same for the USA and Europe releases. The rear sleeves are different because copies sold in the USA do not include "LC00162" anywhere on the release and no "SONY MUSIC" logo at rear bottom left.

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin, Harold Lepidus, Bob Meyer and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

CD and MD (MiniDisc) Releases (Remastered/Remixed Album, 1999)

This album was remixed and remastered by Don DeVito in 1999, so all CD releases of the original 1978 album are now rarities, see 1978.

"Street-Legal" - remastered and remixed CD release, Columbia CK 65974 (USA/Canada), 1999:

Columbia CK 65974 (USA) - front with sticker, scan by David Plentus
This release reproduces the 1978 insert vinyl pictures on the inside of the front CD insert. There is a yellow "THE NICE PRICE" sticker on the front of the jewel case with information about the remastering.

Apart from a general brightness and crispness not present on the 1978 album, you can also hear the backing singers more clearly on several tracks (thanks to Siwert Aldenryd for pointing this out). Specific differences are that Changing Of The Guards is about 30 secs longer and Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) no longer fades into True Love Tends To Forget, they're clearly separated.

Thanks to David Plentus, Jack from Canada and Moise Potié for information and scans.

SRCS 9484 has a black obi with red and white text with price ¥1,785 and date "99-9-22" (22 Sep 1999). The second date on the obi is "78-6-15" (15 Jun 1978), the original release date. The album had a four page insert in English plus a second insert in Japanese and English that folded out. The copy shown is a promo, with a panel on the rear insert and text "SAMPLE" on the clear centre of the CD itself.

This CD-R for radio play only comes in a clear plastic wallet with a single-sided Sony Music Studios paper insert dated "June 16, 2003". I assume because it was sent to radio stations the CD-R has only the CD layer of the hybrid SA-CD release below.

This release is housed in a three fold digipak and contains both CD version and SA-CD stereo versions. The CD version appears to be exactly the same as the 1999 release. The inside of the digipak has three unpublished pictures of Bob from 1978, plus the picture from the front of the vinyl album's inner sleeve. Sadly the photograph of Bob with George Benson from the rear of the inner sleeve of the vinyl album is missing (see above). The yellow sticker on the front of the digipak is unique to this release. The text of the UK and US stickers is identical, although the US sticker has rounded corners and the text in a black box.

The SA-CD design reproduces the Columbia US stereo vinyl label used in 1978. The European and US discs are identical apart from the catalogue number.

Thanks to Kevin Reilly for the US release.

This release at mid-price is in a standard jewel case and consists of the remastered CD layer only of the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release above. The front CD insert booklet includes pictures from the SA-CD booklet. The European release is made in Austria.

The 2004 remastered CD has CD-TEXT (as does the 2003 hybrid SA-CD), whereas the 1999 release does not. Éamonn Ó Catháin informs me that the 2004 release does sound better than the 1999 release to him. The corresponding US release was on 1 Jun 2004.

The release date is shown as "09-9-30" (30 Sep 2009), the original release date as "78-6-15" (15 Jun 1978) and the withdrawal date as "10-3-29" (29 Mar 2010). CD Release (Remastered Original Album, 2013)

Instead of including the 1999 remixed/remastered release of the Street-Legal album in The Complete Album Collection Vol. One, it's one of the fourteen titles newly remastered by Steve Berkowitz. In this case Berkowitz went back to the original 1978 master tapes and remastered the original album. This means there are now two significantly different versions of the album on sale! Changing Of The Guards has reverted to a shorter length of 6:41, instead of the 7:06 version on the 1999 album. It does however, have a final drum beat that was missing from the 1978 version (which is still on Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 3, 1994, and even on the 2007 3CD set Dylan, which should have had the 7:06 version from 1999), timed at 6:36. Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) again fades into True Love Tends To Forget, on the 1999 version they're separated, and the prominent mandolin from the original mix has been restored. If this 2013 release becomes the standard CD version on sale, then the original vinyl, tape and CD releases currently listed as rarities in 1978 will cease to be rarities!

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK20" plus "DISC 23". The CDs are different in detail, the US Street-Legal CD has catalogue number "88691924312D23", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-23". This album has been remastered, so is the fifth Dylan album remastered for this project. See the notes above about the remastering, which affects all releases of the original 1978 album currently listed as rarities in 1978. The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1970s albums from Self Portrait to Slow Train Coming will be released in Japan on 23 Apr 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30482 to SICP 30500. The 2014 release of Street-Legal will be SICP 30497, more details will be added when available. David Carswell has a copy and says that surprisingly this Blu-spec CD2 release is actually the 1999 remastered version, not the 2013 Steve Berkowitz remix of the original 1978 album!

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
