Street-Legal (1978)
|
This page is part of a new section of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included
on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here
and not in the yearly Promo sections.
This page is still incomplete - more entries required. For releases of this
album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International
Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the

Original 2LP set: CBS/Sony 40AP 1100/01 (Japan), 21 Aug 1978/Columbia PC2-36067
(USA), Apr 1979.
This live album, recorded at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan, in Feb 1978, was intended to be a Japan-only release but so many copies were being
imported by Dylan fans elsewhere that it was given a worldwide release.
The sleeve and booklet photographs are by Joel Bernstein and
Hirosuke Katsuyama.

"Bob Dylan At Budokan" - 2LP promo/commercial releases, CBS/Sony 40AP 1100/01
(Japan), 21 Aug 1978:

CBS/Sony 40AP 1100/01 (Japan) - obi scan by Hans Seegers |

CBS/Sony 40AP 1100/01 (Japan) - reverse of obi, scan by Patrick Helfrich |
The album was released in Japan in Aug 1978, and in Australia/New Zealand
later in 1978, but not
until Apr 1979 in the rest of the world. Hans Seegers informs me there was a
counterfeit release available in Italy soon after the Japanese release,
distinguishable only by the catalogue number.
As well as the regular booklet and poster (see
below for the UK release), the promo release has
a three page promo insert. There is a magnificent gold, red, white and black
obi, which has Bob's then album catalogue on the reverse.
The records have red labels with promo stamps, and stamped matrix numbers: 40AP-1100/01A1/B1. Patrick
Helfrich has a commercial release with regular CBS/Sony labels.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Patrick Helfrich for information and scans.

"Bob Dylan At Budokan" - 2LP promo and commercial sets, Columbia PC2 36067
(USA/Canada), Apr 1979:

Columbia PC2 36067 (USA) - promo release, front with
timing strip, scan by Stuart Moore |
The US promo album
has Columbia USA white promo labels, gatefold picture sleeve with a front timing strip
sticker, inner sleeves with lyrics and the giant fold-out poster shown
below.
Patrick Helfrich's Canadian set is a
puzzle in that every instant of the "Columbia" on the gatefold
sleeve has been covered by a black sticker (even on the spine) and the
labels have been pasted over with stickers also omitting the Columbia name
(one sticker has been removed showing the regular Columbia Canada label).
The inner sleeves with lyrics are the same as the US promo version.
Thanks to Stuart Moore and Patrick
Helfrich for information and
scans.

"Bob Dylan At Budokan - 2LP set, CBS 96004 (UK), Apr 1979:

CBS 96004 (UK) - outside of gatefold sleeve (my copy) |
This album has sumptuous packaging for a UK release,
with a black/white 16-page booklet with sleeve notes in
Japanese (untranslated) and lyrics in English and Japanese. The booklet
was reprinted for the UK and has the UK catalogue number CBS 96004. There is also
a large fold-out poster, which again has CBS 96004 in the bottom right
hand corner.
The records have orange/yellow CBS labels and two serial
numbers - on the left is "96004" (both records) and on the right
is "S CBS 83691 (40AP 1100 A/B)" (Record 1) or "S CBS 83692
(40AP 1101 A/B)" (Record 2). The
matrix numbers are:
Side 1 - 96004-A3, S-CBS-83691-A3, BOB (all written)
Side 2 - CBS-S-96004-B4, 83691-B4 (both written)
Side 3 - CBS-S-83692-A6, 96004-C6 (both written)
Side 4 - 96004-D3, CBS-S-83692-B3 (both written)
The album's inner cover has the
text (left): "The more I think about it, the more I realise what I left
behind in Japan - my soul, my music and that sweet girl in the geisha house - I
wonder does she remember me? If the people of Japan wish to know about me, they
can hear this record - also they can hear my heart still beating in Kyoto at the
Zen Rock Garden. Someday I will be back to reclaim it."
