Bob's 60th birthday falling in 2001 is probably why this is a very long page! This yearly page now contains only the main Rarities List! Promotional Items (Albums and Singles) are now here. All Honourable Mentions are now here.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Revised: 07 January, 2024.

Titles in red are not available on a currently released Bob Dylan CD (for these see bobdylan.com )

"Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty-Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances"- promo cassette and compilation CD, SME (Sony Music Entertainment) Records SRCS 2438 (Japan), 28 Feb 2001:

Live2000JpnPromoCasInsert.jpg (48979 bytes)
SME Records SRCS 2438 (Japan) - promo cassette insert, scan by Wil Gielen

This live compilation album was exclusive to Japan, released to coincide with Bob's 2001 tour there. Many of these tracks are part of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other). It was also given away in a card sleeve as a bonus CD with promo copies of Bob Dylan: The Original Mono Recordings, see 2010. The promo cassette shown has the same catalogue number as the CD release. As far as I know there was no corresponding commercial cassette release.

R-0466 Somebody Touched Me (traditional) - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, 24 Sep 2000, previously unreleased

R-0240-2 Wade In The Water (traditional) - from the "Minnesota Hotel Tape", Minneapolis, MN, 22 Dec 1961, previously released on Bakhålls Litterära Röster (The Ambush's Literary Voices), compilation CD given away with an issue of the literary magazine "Bakhåll", Sweden (see 1994). A short excerpt was also included in the Highway 61 Interactive CD-ROM (see 1995)

I Was Young When I Left Home from the same source was released on a bonus disc released with the Limited Edition of "Love And Theft" in Sep 2001, see below.

R-0467 Handsome Molly (traditional) - Gaslight Café, New York, Oct 1962, previously unreleased
This performance has since been released on
Bob Dylan Live At The Gaslight 1962, Starbucks/Hear Music/Sony Music Custom Marketing Group (USA), see 2005. More performances from the Gaslight Café in 1962 have been released on The 50th Anniversary Collection, Sony Music Europe, Dec 2012.

R-0294-2 To Ramona - unidentified performance misdated as The Oval, City Hall, Sheffield, England, 30 Apr 1965 (same as BDC60, see Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ), previously released on the 2000 DVD release of D.A. Pennebaker's 1965 film Don't Look Back, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 1. This date of 30 Apr 1965 is definitely incorrect, as the genuine performance from Sheffield was already circulating among collectors. This performance, still wrongly identified, has now been released on The 50th Anniversary Collection 1965, Sony Music USA, Dec 2015, and now can be positively identified as being from City Hall, Newcastle, 6 May 1965!

R-0066-5 The Grand Coulee Dam - with The Band, New York City, 21 Jan 1968, previously released on the 1972 Tribute to Woody Guthrie album (Columbia/Warner Bros), see 1972

R-0205-4 Dead Man, Dead Man - Saenger Performing Arts Center, New Orleans, LA, 10 Nov 1981, previously released on 1989 Everything Is Broken Columbia singles (see 1989), and on the Japanese Mr. D's Collection #3 limited edition CD (see 1993)

R-0267-8 Cold Irons Bound - El Rey Theater, Los Angeles, 16 Dec 1997 - same as BDC7 (see Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ), previously released on the European Columbia Love Sick singles, also on a bonus disc included with the Australian tour limited edition of Time Out Of Mind, 1998 (for both see 1998)

R-0269-4 Born In Time - New Jersey Center for the Performing Arts, Newark, NJ, 1 Feb 1998 - same as BDC21 (see Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ), previously released on the European Columbia Love Sick singles, also on a bonus disc included with the Australian tour limited edition of Time Out Of Mind (for both see 1998)

R-0468 Country Pie - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, 24 Sep 2000, previously unreleased

R-0469 Things Have Changed - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, 25 Sep 2000, previously unreleased (not 24 Sep 2000 as reported by some - Bob didn't play it on the first night!)
This performance is also on the Columbia US "blue" and "red" promo CD singles Things Have Changed Live & Unreleased, the Columbia UK promo CD The Voice Of Every Generation, the European and Canadian promo CD singles Live & Rare (for all of these see below and 2002), on the Columbia UK compilation
Brit Awards 2002: Album Of The Year (see 2002) and on the revised release of the Japanese 2CD compilation Dylan Ga Rock (see 2010).

R-0137-4 It Ain't Me, Babe - with the Rolling Thunder Revue, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975, previously released on the 1978 Columbia promo 12" single 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara" (see 1978), also released on the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3 (see 1993) and 1995 European Unplugged Dignity CD singles (see 1995). The version released in Nov 2002 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, is a remix, so R-0137 remains a rarity. Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing this out.

Don Handy considers that this performance is different from the Harvard performance which is on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, and he suggest it actually comes from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. Both Glen Dundas and Olof Björner confirm the 20 Nov 1975 date, not 4 Dec 1975.

The other five live tracks on this album are from currently available Columbia live albums: I Don't Believe You (from The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Live 1966); Knockin' On Heaven's Door (from Before The Flood); Shelter From The Storm (from Hard Rain); Slow Train (from Dylan And The Dead); Dignity (from MTV Unplugged).

UK promo - CD-R scan by Gerd Rundel

Wil Gielen has an unused and complete guest ticket for the Dylan concert at Kosei Nenkin Kaikan Dai Hall, Osaka, Japan, 6 Mar 2001 (one week after the album's release on 28 Feb 2001). The guests were given a free copy of the CD. this one is still sealed and the clear cellophane sleeve has a green "Guest" pass sticker.

Thanks to Wil Gielen and Keith Schweiger for information and scans of the promo cassette and sealed promo CD. Thanks to Simon Topping and Gerd Rundel for scans of a Columbia UK promo CD-R of this album, mastered at Whitfield Street Mastering Studios, London. This was sent by Columbia UK to selected retailers to advertise the availability of the album on import in the UK from 5 Mar 2001. The album is in a card sleeve with a flyer showing the promo version of the album sleeve without the added text (see above). Wil Gielen's Japanese record store counter display shown is on thick card and has a fold-out stand to hold it upright. The date of "2000.02.28" is wrong, it should be "2001.02.28" (28 Feb 2001).

Fan Club Recordings CDLAS 137 (Italy) - unauthorised release front, photocopy by Paul Shenton
Paul Shenton has a copy from Italy which is obviously unauthorised. It has two different photos on the reverse of the front insert and the rear insert. Paul points out that a crop of the rear insert photo appears on page 7 of the booklet for The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964 (2010) and was taken by Sig Goode at the Bitter End or Café Wha, New York, in 1961.

Columbia 5020172000 (Australia) - front with sticker, scan by Bill Hester (first release in double-width jewel case)
This limited edition set was released to coincide with Bob's tour in Australia - it was deleted on 30 Jun 2001. R-0049 Positively 4th Street - slightly longer at 4:10 than the version from the original Greatest Hits 1/More Greatest Hits, which is 3:56

This track is the same version as on the Columbia Disco Teen 66 compilation (see 1966), not the original single, which appears on Masterpieces (see 1978) and Biograph (see 1985). Carsten Baumann informs me that he's checked the version on this 1966 album against the version now included on the remastered Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (US release), and they are the same. This would mean it replaces the single version which is now to be found on CD only on Biograph (it's also on the non-US release The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000). Thanks also to David Goldsmith for confirmation. This stereo version of R-0049 has ceased to be a rarity, and has been moved to the new Released Rarities page! The mono version of R-0049, R-0049M, remains a rarity, and is still listed for 1965 and 1966.The version on the 2010 release The Best Of The Original Mono Recordings is only 3:51, see The Best Of The Original Mono Recordings (2010).

R-0273 Dignity - original Oh Mercy out-take produced by Daniel Lanois from Touched By An Angel: The Album - see 1998, not the 1994 Brendan O'Brien remixed version for Greatest Hits Vol. 3, which retained only Bob's vocal and guitar and added new backing. Also on The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000.
Now no longer a rarity since it is included in Dylan (2007) on the bobdylan.com albums page.

Thanks to David Goldsmith for reminding me about the omission of R-0250 from this entry. Despite first reports, this album did not contain the bonus live CD included with the limited UK 2000 release of The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2. However, David says "It is interesting that the jewel case contains a tray for a third disc which makes me wonder if there had been at one stage an intention to include the bonus disc from Vol. 2".

The original release of this set (the limited edition) was contained in an old-style double-width jewel case which has space for the third disc. The CDs have their original designs, and show the original catalogue numbers on the discs (Columbia 487924 2 and Columbia 498361 9 respectively). The catalogue number on the front insert spine and rear insert of the set is Columbia 5020172000. Paul Shenton has a copy imported into the UK by HMV with an "HMV IMPORT" front sticker as well as the Australian gold sticker,. The set was later released in a slim jewel case, obviously no longer a limited edition and with no room for the third disc. It had a uniform CD label design, and the inserts and both CDs have the catalogue number Columbia 5020172000 on them).

Gerd Rundel's copy also comes in a double-width jewel case with the Australian gold sticker like Bill Hester's copy. However, the CDs are the second release versions. The set comes with a twelve-page booklet and an advertisement flyer.

Thanks to "Les Memory" for the information that The Best Of Bob Dylan and The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2 (with the bonus disc) had already been released in Australia. Thanks to Jack from Canada, Bill Hester, Paul Shenton and Gerd Rundel for information and pictures.

"The Best Of Bob Dylan Volumes 1 & 2" - 2CD set, Sony Music DH0018A/B (Hong Kong), Oct 2001:
This exclusive Hong Kong release has the same content as the 2001 Australian 2CD set (see above) but has extra text in Chinese in the inserts. Thanks to Jeffy from Taiwan for a translation of the Chinese text on the cover: "The first line (four characters): "Bob Dylan"; the second line (several characters): "The Best Album of 'the Father of Folk-Rock' "; The third line (four characters): "The Greatest Hits" ". The set was made in Australia.

Gabrielle - "Rise" - Enhanced CD single, Go-Beat 549 752-2 (UK), Apr 2001:

Go-Beat 549 752-2 (UK) - front scan by Peter Coulthard
R-0359-14 Rise (Bob Dylan/Gabrielle/F. Unger-Hamilton/Ollie Dagois) - a looped sample from the start of the version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door from the Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid soundtrack is used throughout this song performed by UK soul singer Gabrielle.

The song appears both in audio and video form on this Enhanced CD, which is playable in a PC. Bob doesn't appear in the video. There is also an acoustic version of Rise, but that does not include the Dylan loop. The screen shot of the video menu for some reason shows the window containing the song list as solid black.

For the original single and album by Gabrielle, see 2000.

Thanks to Peter Coulthard for information and scans.

The Band - "Rock Of Ages" - remastered reissue 2CD set with bonus tracks, Capitol 72435-30181-2-2 (USA), 7 May 2001:

Capitol 72435-30181-2-2 (USA) - 2001 CD release with sticker (my copy)
This album was recorded live at The Band's New Year's Eve concert at the Academy of Music in Brooklyn, New York City, 31 Dec 1971/1 Jan 1972. Bob joined The Band on stage after midnight for four numbers which were not included in the original 1972 release of Rock Of Ages - Down In The Flood (R-0476) was planned for inclusion, but left off at the time for legal reasons. The first CD release of this album (Capitol CDP 7 46617 2) was on one 72 min CD and deleted one track (Genetic Method) from the original double LP, although the last release (CDP 93595 2) was split over 2 CDs and reinstated it. This new 2CD set release puts the whole of the original double album including Genetic Method on CD1 (which clocks in at just under 80 mins) and adds 10 bonus tracks from the concert on CD2, including the four performances with Bob.

R-0001-25 Midnight Special (Huddie Ledbetter "Lead Belly") - Bob plays harmonica on the title track of Harry Belafonte's 1962 The Midnight Special album (stereo version)

Despite the title, this 3CD set actually contains four Harry Belafonte albums: Oh Lord, What A Mornin' (1960), Golden Records Vol. 1 (1960), Jump Up Calypso (1961) and The Midnight Special (1962). The last two albums were released on a single 2 Gether On 1 CD in 1995. Since Golden Records Vol. 1 is a compilation, two of the three CDs can hardly be classed as "originals"! The three CDs are in separate jewel cases inside an outer slipcase. The three rear inserts do not have barcodes. For the original 2 Gether On 1 release (which does have a barcode on the rear insert) see 1995.

For details of the original The Midnight Special album, see 1962. Here the album is on CD3, tracks 42-51 of this 51-track set. The Midnight Special was eventually released on CD in the USA by Wounded Bird Records/Sony Music in 2009, see 1962 (as it's a re-release of the original album).

Thanks to Ian Hollingworth and Peter Oudejans for information and scans.

R-0486 Midnight Special (Huddie Ledbetter "Lead Belly") - Bob plays harmonica for Harry Belafonte on a previously unreleased alternate stereo take of the title track of his 1962 RCA album The Midnight Special, recorded at Webster Hall, New York City, on 2 Feb 1962. For the originally released recordings R-0001 (stereo) and R-0001M (mono), together with notes about this recording date, see 1962. This release credits the track to "Trad. arr. Harry Belafonte"

Another track of special interest is a live cover by Ann Christy of the unreleased Bob Dylan/Helena Springs song Walk Out In The Rain, see my "Unreleased Dylan Songs Directory" W page.

Very many thanks to Dr Hanns Peter Bushoff of BMG Germany (now Sony Music Germany) for all items shown here and his work in compiling the album! Long may he continue with this series! The first North American recording of this song appears to be in 1958 by band leader Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians (composer/translator Carmen Lombardo was Guy Lombardo's younger brother). Bob's version (on CD2, track 6), with the last verse in Italian, was recorded in New York City on 17 Dec 2000 with Larry Campbell and Tony Garnier from Bob's band plus Brian Mitchell on accordion and Shawn Pelton on drums (thanks to Joy Munsey and Olav Langum for the information). Return To Me has also been recorded by Dean Martin (birth name Dino Paul Crocetti), Connie Francis (birth name Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero) and Mantovani amongst many others. For interest, a couple of previous albums featuring this song are shown above.

The 2CD release has a long folded front insert.

Thanks to Øyvind Svele for the information that there is also a "acetate" sampler of this album with 25 songs on a single CD-R, including Return To Me. This has a plain white sleeve with the title and tracklisting - no artwork. More details including a scan will be added when available.

For the DVD/VHS boxed set The Sopranos - The Complete Third Series, containing the episode in which a different edit of Return To Me appears, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 1.

These are songs from Season 3 of the drama series. The first Sopranos soundtrack album from 1999 contained Gotta Serve Somebody, the regular album track from Slow Train Coming, see International Album Releases (Various Artist Compilations) 1999.

The 2004 Golden Stars 3CD set Music You Heard On The Sopranos does not have any Dylan content.

This free 6-track CD in a card sleeve contains two Dylan rarities:

R-0469-4 Things Have Changed - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, 25 Sep 2000, from the Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty-Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see above for that entry and more occurrences

R-0267-9 Cold Irons Bound - El Rey Theater, Los Angeles, 16 Dec 1997 - same as BDC7 (see Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ), previously released on the European Columbia Love Sick singles, also on a bonus disc included with the Australian tour limited edition of Time Out Of Mind, 1998 (for both see 1998), and on the Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty-Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see above

Here this performance is again misdated as 20 Dec 1997, as on the Million Miles and Rare Rock Tracks promo CDs - see 1999 for both. Although Bob did perform Cold Irons Bound on 20 Dec 1997, that performance has never been officially released. Keith Owen tells me that this version is in much better sound quality than on the Japanese album!

The four other tracks on this 6-track CD were: The Times They Are A-Changin', Subterranean Homesick Blues, Tangled Up In Blue and Everything is Broken (regular album versions).

30,000 copies were produced which had to be claimed from UK HMV outlets with the coupon from the 26 May 2001 issue of "The Daily Telegraph".

"The Daily Telegraph" has also given away a Johnny Cash CD called Johnny Cash: 70th Birthday Sampler (Columbia XPCD 2643), which includes the duet of Girl From The North Country with Bob from Nashville Skyline, and a cover of It Ain't Me, Babe. This is listed in International Albums (Other Artist's Compilations).

Thanks to Jim Linwood and Keith Owen for information and scans.

Thanks to Pepe from Spain for the information about this variant of the May 2001 Things Have Changed Live & Unreleased USA red promo CD (CSK 16726, see here) with completely different packaging.

The graphic design of the CD card sleeve may be familiar to Bob Dylan fans - it's similar to that used on the covers of two books by Clinton Heylin about the bootleg recording industry. Bob Dylan is, of course, the most bootlegged artist in recorded music history!

This CD is also available in a very rare French version produced for the French FM radio station "Nostalgie" to mark Bob's 60th birthday. It has the same catalogue number, SAMPCM 10106 2. The unique colour picture sleeve is actually a full-size sticker stuck over the cover of the Spanish/Dutch cardboard sleeve! The CD itself is the same as the Spanish and Dutch releases. Thanks to Anthony Pignataro for spotting this on eBay and to Hans Seegers for further information!

In Holland "Love And Theft" came with the insert shown above advertising the free Live & Rare CD with The Essential Bob Dylan. The wording says that this is just a temporary offer. Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information. John Gaylor's copy of the Dutch Live & Rare CD single has an insert advertising The Essential Bob Dylan (see 2003) and the follow-up CD single Live & Rare 2 (see 2002).

This Canadian CD is a variant of the May 2001 Things Have Changed Live & Unreleased USA "blue promo CD" (CSK 16720, see above) with similar packaging to the Jun 2001 Spanish release of the "red promo" (but in a jewel case instead of a card sleeve)! It was also included in the Canadian edition of the Greatest Hits Box Set released in Canada in Aug 2002 (see 2002, and for the US release see immediately below), but in a card sleeve like the Spanish release.

Various Artists - "There Is No Eye: Music For Photographs" - CD accompanying book, Smithsonian Folkways 40091 (USA), Nov 2001:
This CD accompanies a book of photographs "There Is No Eye" by John Cohen (of the New Lost City Ramblers). The title "There Is No Eye" is taken from Bob's sleeve notes to Highway 61 Revisited, the last paragraph which starts "you are right john cohen... [...] there is no eye - there is only a series of mouths - long live the mouths... [...]"

R-0516 Roll On John (Traditional) - performed by Bob during an interview with Cynthia Gooding for the "Folksinger's Choice" WBAI radio programme, New York City, recorded 13 Jan 1962, broadcast 11 Mar 1962, the track includes some chat with Cynthia Gooding.

The interview is notorious for the outrageous lies Bob tells to the admiring Cynthia about his early life! (These dates are speculative, some say the programme was never actually broadcast.)

Jean-Pol Hiernaux informs me that many of the tracks on the Smithsonian Folkways site are now downloadable. However, R-0516 is not included.

All these songs have been covered by Bob. A live performance by Bob of Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie from the Stadtpark, Hamburg, Germany 12 Jun 1998 was made available on bobdylan.com in Nov 1998 (see Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ) For more details of There Is No Eye see the Smithsonian web-site

R-0517 King Of Kings  - previously unreleased instrumental with Ronnie Wood and Bob on guitars, recorded in 1996 at the same time as R-0264/R-0521

There is a rumour that some demos for tracks that eventually appeared on Time Out Of Mind were also recorded at this session, which included Elvis Presley's sidesmen Scotty Moore and D. J. Fontana, but this appears not to be true.

Hans Seegers also has a German Ronnie Wood promo interview disc with a slightly different sleeve from the above which does not include Bob. The Russian copy owned by Peter Oudejans appears to be an official release, not pirated.
