US release, Columbia CK 85975, 11 Sep 2001. The album title, the only one of Bob's album titles to be in quotes, is believed to reference a 1993 book by Eric Lott, "Love & Theft: Blackface Minstrelsy and the American Working Class".

This is a new recording of Mississippi - three unreleased takes of the original version from the 1997 Time Out of Mind sessions were released in 2008 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs.

This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). "Love And Theft" is also available on the SA-CD in 5.1 surround sound.

Detailed rear scans are shown for comparison with the European release below. The album has the same inner sleeves as below with the rear slightly raised to allow the record to be removed more easily. The record matrix numbers for Francisco's copy are as follows: Side 1- AL-86078-1B, Side 2 - BL-86078-1B, Side 3- AL-86079-1B, Side 4 - BL-86079-1B. Gerd Rundel's copy has the same matrix numbers with "STERLING" also stamped on each side which means the album was mastered by Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ.

Francisco Espinoza Cárcamo's copy of the US 2LP set has a front sticker with the same text as the one with the regular single CD US release (see below). Gerd Rundel's copy has this sticker plus a second sticker boasting of a five-star rating from the US rock magazine "Rolling Stone". Gerd also has a copy with a promo sticker on the rear sleeve covering the barcode.

The German promo CD-R came in a slimline CD single jewel case without an insert. Bye And Bye is again mis-spelled "By And By". There is no album title or catalogue number. For a German CD-R 4-track single with the same disc design and the same song title mistake, see International Singles (2000s).

Columbia CK 86076 (USA) - front of digipak with sticker (my copy)

There are slight differences inside the digipaks in that the inside of the US release has black bars between the three sections while they are white in the Austrian release. The US release also has a semi-circular cut-out at the left edge to assist removing the booklet, the Austrian release doesn't. The US discs are CK 85975 (same as the regular release) and CSK 54967

The Austrian discs are COL 504364 2 (again same as the regular release) and COL 504364 9 (as on the spine of the Austrian digipak). My copy has a UK advertising flyer. On Gerd Rundel's copy the red "BOB DYLAN" on the spine of the digipak is missing. This copy came with a Dutch advertising flyer.

This is the regular release without bonus disc. It comes in a jewel case with a clear plastic CD tray.

The shirt picture on the inside of the rear insert wasn't reproduced on the vinyl release (see above). Thanks to Ian Woodward for scans of a sealed promo copy with a sticker on the rear.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information about the Japanese release, Sony Music MHCP 10016, which comes with a grey, red and white obi with black and white text and price ¥2,520 (¥2,400 before tax). The release date is "03-12-17" (17 Dec 2003). The original release date is "01-9-11" (11 Sep 2001) and the withdrawal date is 04-6-16" (16 Jun 2004). There is a 12-page stapled booklet in English and a 28-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese, as well as a double-sided hybrid SA-CD insert in Japanese. The copy shown is a promo, with a yellow numbered promo sticker on the rear of the digipak, and the text "SAMPLE LOANED" in the clear centre of the CD itself.
