"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again"/"Rita May"
- 7" singles,
S CBS 48659 (UK)/CBS 4859 (Spain), Jan 1977:
For USA/European Nov 1976 releases of this single, see 1976.
The UK single (S CBS 4859) is a mystery! The sleeve clearly shows Stuck
Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again as the A-side, but there is
actually no 7" record like that in existence. All the UK singles that were
released - a promo and three different commercial pressings - have Rita
May as the A-side although There is no UK picture sleeve showing Rita
May as the A-side. Michel Pomarede's copy has a purple sleeve, whereas
Hans Seegers sent me scans of a copy with a black sleeve in 2003. Both Michel
and Arie de Reus assure me that all their copies have the purple sleeve and
Hans' black sleeve copy in an exception.

R-0130 appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). It was also one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, also see Online Performances (Other). It is now also released on the 2010 version of Dylan Ga Rock (see 2010)

It was manufactured in Italy by CBS Sugar S.p.A. and distributed by Messaggerie Musicali, Milan. The title of this compilation is its catalogue number! Side 1 includes Italian artists only and Side 2 has international artists. Bob's contribution is track 1 on Side 2. The record has white CBS Sugar promo labels and there is a purple "SIAE" copyright stamp on Side 1.

"Bob Dylan In Concerto" - 7" EP given away with issue
of "Gong" magazine, Gong 5A/6B (Italy), Mar 1977:
This EP was given away with the Mar 1977 issue of the Italian rock music magazine
"Gong". The rear of the sleeve is
plain white, Bob Dylan is not mentioned on the record labels. The sleeve states
that all the tracks were recorded live in Boston, MA - in fact none come from
there. There's some debate about whether this item should be classified as "Questionable", but
it was certainly sold legally in Italy at the time - the Side 1 label
has the approval stamp of "SIAE", the Italian copyright control organisation.

R-0135 Don't Go Home
With Your Hard-On (Leonard Cohen/Phil Spector)
- Bob contributes backup vocals to the
chorus (full version 5:34), recorded Gold Star Recording Studio, Los
Angeles, CA, Jan 1977 This recording was previously dated Mar 1977 but Ian Woodward in "Isis 212-13" concludes the overnight session that Bob attended probably took place on 27-28 Jan 1977. It is dated as 29-30 Jan 1977 in the Sony Archives but Ian says this does not tally with the memories of those who participated. The back-up chorus to this song includes Allen Ginsberg, Ronee Blakley (from the Rolling Thunder Revue) and Clydie King (one of Bob's backing singers). This track was also released as the B-side of the single Memories in both complete and edited versions, see below. Cohen has never performed it live, but a cover version by David McComb and Adam Peters appears on the 1991 Atlantic/EastWest tribute album I'm Your Fan: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen. |

Ain't No Cure For Collecting - book by Gordon Fraser, photocopy by Paul Shenton |
The Dec 1980 issue of UK "Record Collector" magazine reported in an article on Bob's 1970s recordings that Bob also appeared on this album uncredited on the track Iodine, but I have not seen this confirmed anywhere else, so I have not allocated it an R-number.
Thanks to Paul Shenton for finding Ain't No Cure For Collecting, a Leonard Cohen book by Gordon Fraser (no relation). This shows illustrations of an Artisan Sound Recorders test pressing made for Warner Bros as well as a test pressing of the original US Warner Bros BS 3125 release dated 26 Sep 1977. R-0135 is titled Heart On on Side 2 of both the acetate and the test pressing! The 12" acetate comes in a plain light brown sleeve without text, and is said to have been personally owned by Phil Spector. The book does not have a picture of Side 2 of the test pressing, Paul obtained a photo of the label from Gordon himself after meeting him at a record fair. The typed info sheet accompanying this test pressing is exactly the same as that accompanying a completely different test pressing on Discogs! On this R-0135 has its final title.

This album was initially released in
the USA by Warner Bros with catalogue number BS 3125, before being taken up by
Columbia and released worldwide. Scans of Columbia PC 44286 (USA) required! For some reason
Leonard Cohen's book of prose and poetry released in 1978 is called "Death of a
Lady's Man", as on the labels of the first Dutch and some other LP releases.
It includes the lyrics of the title track as a poem. The edition shown on
right is from André Deutsch Ltd. (UK), 13 May 2010. Thanks to Harold Lepidus for information that this album was re-released on heavyweight vinyl on 13 Oct 2011 by San Francisco-based vinyl reissues label record label 4 Men With Beards. More scans required! |

CBS 86042 (NL) - front scan by Ronald Born (1977 release) |
I have information about three releases of the Dutch album, each with different codes on the rear sleeve at top right. The record of the 1977 Dutch release has orange/yellow CBS labels with "Death Of A Lady's Man" as the album title! The labels of the late 1970s/early 1980s release are again orange/yellow and now have the correct title, with the "LC|0149" code (introduced for CBS labels around 1979) added to the left of the centre hole. |

The late 1980s release has a new catalogue number, CBS 32661, and the record now has red CBS labels, again with the correct title. The front sleeve of this 1980s copy has a red CBS "Nice Price" sticker.
I also have information about a French release, Prix D'Ami 32661 (France), early 1980s, but have seen no further evidence.
This album was re-released by the Dutch company Music on Vinyl with catalogue number MOVLP476 on 27 Feb 2012 - scans required!

The album title on both releases is translated as "La Muerte De Un

Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On are translated into Spanish!
(The song is translated as
No Vuelvas
Cachondo A Casa
on the B-side of the 7" Spanish single below.)
The 1977 record was
made in Spain by Discos CBS, Madrid, and has orange/yellow CBS labels. The early 1980s release has a new catalogue number, CBS 32661, but (unlike the Dutch CBS 32661 copy above) the record was again made in Spain by Discos CBS, Madrid, and again has orange/yellow CBS labels. CBS SBP 237076 (Australia/New Zealand), 1977:
The copyright text at the bottom of the Australian orange/yellow
CBS record labels
is the shorter style with "MADE IN
AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS
copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were
manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C.
changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after
that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information,
not shown here. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may
not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from
1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, while Slow
Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)

Leonard Cohen - "Memories"
(edited version)/"Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On (edited version)" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS 5882 (NL)/CBS S 5882 (West Germany), 2 Dec 1977:
Interestingly, Memories is the only song from
this album that Cohen ever performed live. A 1979 live version appears on his
album Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979, released in 2001. The
A-side of these singles (4:19) is an edited version of the 5:59 track from the CBS album Death Of A Ladies' Man,
see above.

R-0625 Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On (Leonard Cohen/Phil Spector) - Bob contributes backup vocals to the chorus (edited version - 4:08)
This single B-side is again an edited version of the 5:34 track from the CBS album Death Of A Ladies' Man, see above.
The Dutch and German commercial singles had the same front sleeve, but slightly different rear sleeves showing the vinyl and cassette releases of the album. The cassette release as above has the incorrect "Death Of A Lady's Man" title. The Dutch record labels have the text "Taken from the CBS Lp 'DEATH OF A LADY'S MAN'", but the West German record labels have "From the CBS Lp 'DEATH OF A LADIES' MAN'"!
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Ronald Born for information and scans.

Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On (Leonard Cohen/Phil Spector)
- Bob contributes backup vocals to the
chorus (full version 5:34) These singles had a similar catalogue number to the West German release. They had no picture sleeves and the B-side was the complete 5:34 track from the CBS UK album Death Of A Ladies' Man, see above. Although the B-side is the full version, the A-side is the 4:19 edit as on the Dutch, West German and Italian singles above (here timed at 4:17). |

- Bob contributes backup vocals to the
chorus (full version 5:34) The B-side of this release of CBS 5882 had the full 5:34 album version of the song from the CBS album Death Of A Ladies' Man, see above, with a different picture sleeve and translated titles. Surprisingly the B-side title was not translated on the Spanish LP and cassette releases. Like the B-side, the A-side is the full 5:59 version. |

"Romance In Durango"/"Sara" - 7" stereo single, CBS 4989 (Spain), 1977:
CBS 4989 (Spain) - front scan by Hans Seegers |
This single is unique in that it's the only worldwide appearance of Sara
on a 7" release. Although Romance In Durango segues into Black Diamond Bay
on Side 2 of Desire, this 5:50 stand-alone version is 6 seconds
longer than R-0519 from a Japanese 7" single as the B-side of One More Cup
of Coffee, see 1976. I'm therefore classifying it
as a different rarity. R-2242-2 Romance In Durango - unfaded version without segue into Black Diamond Bay (5:50) This unfaded version previously appeared on a CBS Sugar Italy 8-track tape cartridge release of Desire, again see 1976. |
CBS 4989 (Spain) - rear scan by Hans Seegers |
CBS 4989 (Spain) - B-side scan by Hans Seegers |
The two Desire tracks also appeared separately (in significantly better quality) on a Mobile Fidelity heavyweight vinyl 2LP 45RPM release of Desire, 2013 (Romance In Durango is on Side 3 and Black Diamond Bay is on Side 4).
Thanks to Francisco Lima for information about this single and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans.
