A&M US afternoon show acetate with five rarities, picture from eBay
Gerd Rundel has found a very highly priced single-sided disc on eBay with the Dylan afternoon show that Arie de Reus confirms to be a genuine A&M acetate from 1972 (A&M recorded both the afternoon and evening concerts). This acetate contains the following rarities, four of which are new:

R-2173 A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall - recorded live at the Concert for Bangladesh with George Harrison, Leon Russell and Ringo Starr, Madison Square Garden, New York, 1 Aug 1971 (afternoon show)

Sony Music SICP-31361~2 (Japan) - front with obi and tour sticker, scan by Sonny Boy McFitzson

This 2CD set exclusive to Japan was released on Blu-spec CD2 discs to mark Bob's tour there in April 2020, now cancelled. Track by track liner notes are by Heckel Sugano. The CD obi and front stickers were expected to show "来日記念盤" for "Japan Tour Edition".

Sony Music SICP-31361~2 (Japan) - outside of 36-page colour booklet with original front art, scan by Sonny Boy McFitzson

Thanks to Jack from Canada for finding new artwork. Steve Perrin informs me that the new cover picture is based on artwork by Japanese Ukiyo-e artist Hokusai, namely his "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" and "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". The picture also incorporates the image of Bob and Suze Rotolo from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan with traditional Japanese
Sugegasa straw hats! The original artwork is now used as the front of the insert booklet. According to Sonny Boy McFitzson Amazon Japan are including a 24cm x 24cm print of the new artwork as a bonus (see above).

Sony Japan's blog on 25 Feb 2020 said: “Sending all the artworks of this collection for Bob's approval, his manager loved the "Great Waves and Fuji" painting, which had been originally intended for a booklet page,  so much that he required it to be the front cover. Finally the front insert and booklet front were exchanged, even though it was almost too late.

The set includes five rarities, all from CBS/Sony singles:

R-0084-15 George Jackson - "Big Band" version, A-side of 1971 Columbia single (see 1971), lyrics on bobdylan.com here

This is the stereo version from the 1973 Dylan album, see 1973
. This song was written by Bill Trader, but is frequently wrongly credited on releases of this album and Columbia singles to "B. Abner" (Buford Abner) - see authorship note here! A mono version (presumably a reduction from stereo) was released on Columbia 7" singles (R-0099M, see 1974).

Sony Music SICP-31361~2 (Japan) - detail from page 14 of booklet 2, scan by Sonny Boy McFitzson (CBS/Sony SONE 70025)
All the mono and stereo singles from which these 31 tracks were selected are listed here. Sonny Boy McFitzson points out that for Sony Music to re-release the 1960s CBS singles, originally released by Nippon Columbia, is as big a deal as when Columbia/CBS bought the rights to reissue Planet Waves and Before The Flood from Asylum in 1982.

Pages 2-12 of the monochrome booklet have track by track commentaries by Yasufumi Amatatsu which begin with The oldest one among Bob Dylan records I have with me is Blowin' in the Wind, maybe, with a thumbnail of SONE 70025 (1968).

Pages 13-14 of the same booklet have an essay by Shinichiro Tatsumi about "Peaks of Nippon Columbia" where the top Dylan collector in Japan admits he hasn't even completed the Nippon releases, together with a photo of his vault which Sonny Boy McFitzson visited in Mar 2011.

CBS/Sony SONE 70025 (Japan, 1968) - front scan by Hans Seegers

Pages 15-64 of the same booklet have songs lyrics with thumbnails of the singles. Page 64 has an advert for the 7" single SIKP 1002 (see International Singles: All Formats 2020s) whose vinyl is actually clear pink and described again as "using mono masters, remastered in 2010". Page 65 has text "This CD set was produced in conjunction with the Japan tour held in 2020". These were the concert dates confirmed by 20 Feb 2020. The set credits include:

"In association with: Shinichiro Tatsumi the supreme Dylan collector in Japan.
Designed by: “Subterranean” JAM
Advised by: Testuya Shiroki the director of Sony Music International, and Hiroshi Sasaki for Sony Music Japan with the help of Jeroen Vandermeer and others
Assisted by: Norio Kurihara
Thanks to: Jeff Rosen; Shinichiro Tatsumi; UDO ARTISTS Inc.; Nippon Columbia Co., Ltd. (for providing CBS covers); Warner Music Japan Inc. (for providing Asylum covers); Akihiro Nakamura."

Nothing is mentioned about the tour cancellation anywhere in the packaging, which means copies must have been manufactured before 12 Mar 2020.

"Murder Most Foul" - track made available on bobdylan.com (USA), 27 Mar 2020:

Picture from bobdylan.com

bobdylan.com has unveiled a previously unreleased song by Bob entitled Murder Most Foul, almost seventeen minutes long, about the assassination of President John F Kennedy in Dallas. TX, on 22 Nov 1963. Bob's message to his fans is:

"Greetings to my fans and followers with gratitude for all your support and loyalty across the years. This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting. Stay safe, stay observant and may God be with you. Bob Dylan"

The lyrics have a reference to 50 years having passed. This entry has been added to Online Performances (bobdylan.com).

The title is a quote from William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" (Act 1, Scene 5): "Murder most foul, as in the best it is. But this most foul, strange and unnatural."

Great news is that Murder Most Foul became #1 on the US "Billboard" chart for the week ending 9 Apr 2020. This is Bob's first #1 in the USA, as his previous best, Like A Rolling Stone, only made it to #2. However, Blowin' In The Wind by Peter, Paul and Mary, and Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds both reached #1.

Murder Most Foul was released as CD2 of the 2CD set Rough And Rowdy Ways on 19 Jun 2020, so is no longer a rarity. This may mean it was not recorded at the Rough And Rowdy Ways sessions in early 2020, but no recording date has been revealed.

Thanks to Alan Hoaksey, Fred Muller, Éamonn Ó Catháin and Derek Barker for information.

"I Contain Multitudes" - track made available on bobdylan.com (USA), 17 Apr 2020:

Picture from bobdylan.com
bobdylan.com has unveiled a second previously unreleased song by Bob entitled I Contain Multitudes, (4:38)

The photo was taken at Sporthalle Alpenstrasse, Salzburg, Austria, 9 Jul 1996 by Andrea Orlandi. The song title comes from the Walt Whitman poem "Song of Myself" (1855), "Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)"

This entry has again been added to Online Performances (bobdylan.com).

I Contain Multitudes was released as track 1 of CD1 of the 2CD set Rough And Rowdy Ways on 19 Jun 2020, so is no longer a rarity.

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin, Harold Lepidus and Andrea Orlandi for information.

"False Prophet" - track made available on bobdylan.com (USA), 8 May 2020:

Picture from bobdylan.com
bobdylan.com has unveiled a third previously unreleased song by Bob entitled False Prophet (6:01). These three tracks are now revealed to be from Bob's new studio album, Rough And Rowdy Ways, to be released on 19 Jun 2020. Sonny Boy McFitzson says that verses six and seven from the published lyrics are reversed.

The skeleton illustration is taken from the cover of "The Shadow" magazine, USA, 15 Jul 1942. This song is said to have been inspired by the 1954 Sun Records B-side, If Lovin' Is Believing by Billy ''The Kid'' Emerson. This time the song title comes from the Bible: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." (Matthew 7:15)

This entry has again been added to Online Performances (bobdylan.com).

Thanks to Philip Jump of Badlands for news about this very limited 3CD set with 74 tracks, released on Friday 4 Dec 2020 to preserve copyright of Bob's recordings within the EU. All of the tracks are previously unreleased out-takes from Self Portrait (Mar 1970 sessions) and New Morning (May-Aug 1970 sessions) and will be rarities. R-numbers will be added in due course.

R-2280 I Threw It All Away (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 May 1970
Thanks to Larry Crum for noticing that R-2280 is the same take that appeared on the Sony Custom Mix CD site in Apr 2003 (R-0606, see
Online Performances (Other) ). The mix is different and it does not include about 14 seconds of talk and guitar strums which are at the beginning of the Custom Mix CD track.

R-2281 I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met) (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 May 1970

R-2282 Matchbox (Blind Lemon Jefferson/Carl Perkins) (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 May 1970

R-2284 Telephone Wire (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 May 1970
Sonny Boy McFitzson says the riffs in this performance seem to be taken from Howlin' Wolf's Smokestack Lightning.

R-2285 Fishing Blues (Henry Thomas) (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 May 1970

R-2286 Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance (Henry Thomas) (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 May 1970

R-2294 Alligator Man [Rock Version] (Floyd Chance/Jimmy "C" Newman) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970

R-2295 Alligator Man [Country Version] (Floyd Chance/Jimmy "C" Newman) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970

R-2296 Day Of The Locusts (take 2) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970
This recording date and position is almost certainly incorrect - the Princeton University ceremony that is widely accepted to have inspired the lyrics of this song didn't take place until 9 Jun 1970. Krogsgaard doesn't list any takes of Day Of The Locusts until 12 Aug 1970! See below.

R-2297 Sarah Jane 1 (traditional) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970

R-2298 Sign On The Window - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970

  21. If Not For You - take 1 (12 Aug 1970) (3:12)
  22. If Not For You - take 2 (12 Aug 1970) (2:31)

R-2320 If Not For You (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 12 Aug 1970 (track 21 repeated in error, not the recording from 2 Jun 1970, R-2300, as listed above)
R-2300 is now listed in 2021.

R-2321 If Not For You (take 2) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 12 Aug 1970 (track 22 repeated in error, not the recording from 2 Jun 1970, R-2301, as listed above)
R-2301 is now listed in 2021.

R-2302 Jamaica Farewell (Irving Burgie) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 3 Jun 1970

R-2303 Can't Help Falling In Love (George Weiss/Hugo Peretti/Luigi Creatore) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 3 Jun 1970

R-2308 Tomorrow Is A Long Time (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 4 Jun 1970

R-2309 Tomorrow Is A Long Time (take 2) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 4 Jun 1970

R-2310 New Morning - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 4 Jun 1970

R-2311 Untitled 1970 Instrumental #2 - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 4 Jun 1970
Sonny Boy McFitzson is of the opinion that, even though he isn't credited in the booklet, the harmonica player is Charlie McCoy, not Bob.

R-2312 Went To See The Gypsy - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 5 Jun 1970

R-2313 Sign On The Window (stereo mix) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 5 Jun 1970
Steve Perrin points out this is a remix of take 3 from 1 May 1970 (R-2292)

R-2314 Winterlude - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 5 Jun 1970

R-2315 I Forgot To Remember To Forget 1 (Stan Kesler/Charlie Feathers) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 5 Jun 1970

R-2316 I Forgot To Remember To Forget 2 (Stan Kesler/Charlie Feathers) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 5 Jun 1970

Sonny Boy McFitzson has noticed that both 1970 versions of this song have an extra verse “When I'm cuddled up dancing with another” which isn't included in Elvis', Johnny Cash's nor The Basement Tapes versions. This version with the extra verse has also been recorded by Wanda Jackson on her 2006 album I Remember Elvis.

R-2317 Lily Of The West (traditional) (take 2) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 5 Jun 1970

R-2318 Father of Night (Rehearsal) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 5 Jun 1970

R-2319 Lily Of The West (traditional) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 5 Jun 1970

R-2320 If Not For You (take 1) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 12 Aug 1970 (this track has in fact always been correct)

R-2321 If Not For You (take 2) - recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 12 Aug 1970 (this track has in fact always been correct)

Even though Krogsgaard lists that five takes of If Not For You, three of which were complete, were recorded on 12 Aug 1970, there are several reports that tracks 21 and 22 of CD3 are exactly the same as tracks 1 and 2 from 2 Jun 1970. My guess is that these two tracks have been duplicated by mistake and the two intended tracks from 12 Aug 1970 remain unreleased!

March 3, 4, 5 and May 1, 1970 sessions took place at Studio B, Columbia Recording Studios, New York City.

June 1-5 and August 12, 1970 sessions took place at Studio E, Columbia Recording Studios, New York City.

The Gelston Acetates, 1986

Gelston acetate 10, scan by Arie de Reus (1 May 1970, Reel 1, Side 1)
The following tracks from the George Harrison sessions on 1 May 1970 were included in The Gelston Acetates, a set of Columbia acetates which surfaced in 1986. Both acetates shown just have "Bob Dylan Jams" without song titles. As the 2020 tracks have been remixed from the rough mixes and remastered I have allocated them new R-numbers.

R-0425 One Too Many Mornings - recorded as R-0419 (R-2275)

Missing Recordings

Thanks to Steve Perrin for pointing out that My Previous Life, listed by Michael Krogsgaard as recorded on 5 Mar 1970, is not the song written by Don Ross but almost certainly the song on CD1 titled Things About Comin' My Way (track 12). Thanks to Peter Coulthard for pointing out that Dock Of The Bay from 3 Mar 1970 is probably not the Steve Cropper/Otis Redding song but I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound (CD1, track 1), which includes "San Francisco Bay" in the lyrics. Peter is also certain that What's It All About from 5 Jun 1970 overdubbed 13 Jul 1970 is actually Sign on The Window which includes the refrain "This must be what it's all about..." and that Lonesome Me from 1 Jun 1970 is not the Don Gibson song but Tomorrow Is A Long Time, listed on the 4th June log as "Lonesome Would Be Nothing At All" and which contains the line "lonesome would mean nothing to you at all".

These known 1970 performances listed by Michael Krogsgaard in his Recording Sessions articles, all recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, are still missing from the set: When A Fellow's Out Of A Job (Grant Rogers/John Barnes) 3 Mar 1970; Ahoooah (Owau) (Instrumental) 5 Jun 1970*; Blowin’ In The Wind (electric version with musicians including Al Kooper and David Bromberg) 30 Jun 1970.

*Untitled 1970 Instrumental #2 is dated as being from 4 Jun 1970 but Derek Barker in "Isis" issue 211 thinks they are one and the same.

Bob Dylan 1970 - 3CD set (USA/Europe/Japan), 26 Feb 2021:

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 19439856412 (Europe) - picture from Badlands web-site
Thanks to Badlands for information that this very limited 3CD set will be reissued with new artwork in the USA, Europe and Japan as Bob Dylan 1970 on 26 Feb 2021. This will apparently be a limited release so the 74 tracks it contains may remain rarities. The front photo was used for several European single releases of Watching The River Flow in 1971 and for the rear of the booklet with both 3LP and 3CD versions of The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 - Travelin' Thru 1967-1969 in 2019. DylanWatch45.JPG (27428 bytes)
CBS 7329 (Norway) - front scan by Yan Friis (1971)

Columbia/Legacy 19075981932 (USA) - rear of booklet, scan by Jack from Canada (2019)

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for pointing out this new set is slightly different: Day Of The Locust -Take 2, formerly CD2, track 24, dated 1 Jun 1970, is now CD3, track 23 and dated 12 Aug 1970. This now agrees with Michael Krogsgaard's dating (see comment above). The new set also corrects a mistake whereby two tracks were repeated - these are R-2300/2301 and R-2320/2321 above, so that the missing two tracks from 2 Jun 1970 are now included and R-2300/R-2301 will be heard for the first time.

Thanks also to Arie de Reus, Steve Perrin, Jack from Canada, Yan Friis, Philip Jump and Mike Ward of Badlands and Derek Barker of "Isis".
