Bob plays harmonica on five tracks recorded Sep 1961. I'm informed by Rob van Estrik that the album has not only been remastered, but also remixed, so that Bob's harmonica contribution on R-0002/3/4 is now more prominent than on the original album. R-0002-6 I'll Fly Away (Albert E. Brumley)

This was a compilation CD included with an issue of the literary
magazine "Bakhåll" (The Ambush),
but which was also sold separately in some record and book stores in Sweden. All
the other tracks on
the CD are of authors reading from their works -
they include Allen Ginsberg, Ezra Pound, Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac and T. S.
Eliot.

"Dignity "- "Greatest Hits Vol. 3" CD singles,
Columbia (USA/Europe), mid 1994:
(See 1995 for the Europe/Australia
Columbia MTV Unplugged Dignity singles.)
Columbia CSK 6595 contains the Greatest Hits Vol. 3 Dignity in full and the radio edit (R-0238). It was released in the USA in a standard width jewel case as a picture CD and also as a gold CD-R "test pressing" (not shown).
Columbia 660942 1 was released in France in a card sleeve with the same design. It also contains the Greatest Hits Vol. 3 Dignity in full and the radio edit (R-0238).
Columbia 660942 2 was pressed in Austria and released in two versions. Both have the Greatest Hits Vol. 3 Dignity both in full and the radio edit (R-0238) plus A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall (R-0239) and are in CD single slim jewel cases.
Version 1 was released in most European countries except Spain. This was not in a card sleeve as previously reported.
Version 2 was released in Spain only under the "CBS/Sony" imprint.
Columbia XPCD 580 was a promo CD released in the UK containing only R-0238, the Greatest Hits Vol. 3 Dignity radio edit (4:38), and which uses the photo from the album sleeve cover. John Fitzgerald informs me he has an un-numbered UK CD-R test pressing of R-0238 with a white label saying "Whitfield Recording Studios", with "Bob Dylan" and "Dignity" typewritten (not shown).
Shown here are a handbill for the Great Music Experience ("Aoniyoshi" in Japanese), Naira City, Japan, 20-22 May 1994, sponsored by Sanyo on behalf of UNESCO, the stub of a ticket for the night R-0239 was recorded, and the front of the concert programme for the three shows.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Stefan, Marc, Jack from Canada and Wil Gielen for information and scans.

R-0231 You Belong To Me (Pee Wee King/Red Stewart/Chilton Price)
This was one of the songs listed as being on the hoax album Stormy Season, details of which circulated round the Internet in October 1996, see my Directory of Unreleased Dylan Songs, page S - Dylan fans hoped that a complete version would be released! You Belong To Me was previously a big hit for Patti Page (#1), Jo Stafford (#7) and Dean Martin (#12) in 1952. Many other artists have also recorded it. |

Harold Lepidus adds: "There was also a promo only "edited" version of the CD for in-store play (I believe) with generic packaging including the Dylan track. All potentially offensive material (i.e. Patti Smith's Rock & Roll Nigger) were removed. (The "offensive" dialogue over the end of the Dylan track remained.)" The CD came in a standard jewel case with no rear insert and is edited to 1:06:16.
Thanks to Jack from Canada, Harold Lepidus and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

Various Artists - "Woodstock '94 Minutes" - radio station discs (6CD), MediaAmerica Inc/Neer Perfect Productions (catalogue number?) (USA), Jun/Jul 1994:
The first of these radio station discs has a cue sheet dated 27 Jun 1994, and the broadcast dates on the other sheets and all three CDs are for July 1994, so these programmes were aired before the 1994 Woodstock Festival took place. This explains why they contain excerpts of Dylan album tracks and previous interviews. CDs 1, 5 and 6 had no Dylan content.
CD2 (week of 10 Jul 1994) includes excerpts of Like A Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited and Positively 4th Street from Greatest Hits. It also includes an interview with Bob about performing on stage.
CD3 (week of 17 Jul 1994) includes excerpts of I Want You from Blonde on Blonde and Positively 4th Street from Greatest Hits. It also includes an Interview with Bob.
CD4 (week of 24 Jul 1994) includes excerpts of I Want You and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 from Blonde on Blonde. This disc does not include an interview with Bob, but does include interviews with Steve Cropper and George Harrison talking about Bob.
I have not allocated R-numbers to these excerpts.
Thanks to Jack from Canada for information scans.

the original Woodstock such as Jimi Hendrix. Bob's contribution is on CD 3
of 5, and is from a completely different place and time! He didn't appear
at the original Woodstock, but he did appear at "Woodstock '94",
see below.

Allen Ginsberg - "Holy Soul Jelly Roll: Poems And Songs 1949-1993" - 4CD boxed set, Rhino Word Beat R2 71693 (USA), 6 Sep 1994:
The picture of Bob with Allen Ginsberg during the Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1975 is by Ellie Dorfman, and first appeared on Allen Ginsberg's US John Hammond Records 2LP set First Blues, see 1983.
R-0224 A Dream
(William Blake/Allen Ginsberg) (5:06) - recorded Nov 1971, Bob plays guitar and
contributes vocals to this poem by William Blake set to music
R-0159-2 Vomit Express (Allen
Ginsberg/Bob Dylan) (6:32) - recorded Nov 1971, Bob plays guitar and
contributes vocals (Glen Dundas credits Bob as co-author, but the
set booklet doesn't)
First released on Allen Ginsberg's US John Hammond Records 2LP set First Blues,
see
1983. Now re-released on a seven track
limited edition vinyl sampler from First Blues from Ginsberg Recordings
in 2013.
R-0235 September On
Jessore Road (Allen Ginsberg/Bob Dylan) (10:34) - recorded at the
Record Plant, New York, 9-17 Nov 1971,
Bob plays piano, organ, acoustic and electric guitars
(again Glen Dundas credits Bob as co-author, but
the set booklet doesn't).
Larry Crum says: "The first verse and last two
lines of the song are from the 1983 recording without Bob with some
instruments overdubbed. Although the lyrics of the first two verses are the
same as R-0225*, the recordings are definitely different. Instruments
include, among others, bass, French horn and definitely Bob's piano and
organ overdubs and per the credits, guitar as well with Bob's first guitar
removed from the mix." *R-0225 is the excerpt of this song which appeared on a Sing Out! magazine flexi-disc (see 1972). |
|
![]() Omnivore Records 7 DVCD-175 (USA, 2016) - front of sealed copy with sticker (includes R-1650) |
The version of September On Jessore Road that appears on Allen Ginsberg's Omnivore Records 3CD boxed set The Last Word On "First Blues" (R-1650, see 2016) is yet another take. Larry Crum again says: "This version has completely different lyrics from the other two versions. The liner notes state that "Just a few minutes of this epic were included in the Holy Soul Jelly Roll box set, but there producer Hal Wilner chose to fade it out early, blending it into a version that was recorded for the September On Jessore Road album in 1983." This must be a mistake! The instruments are also very different - acoustic guitars, minor chords. The credits in the booklet are for the entire session and include Bob on guitar, vocals, piano, organ but there is no piano or organ on this take."
R-0226 Airplane Blues (Allen
Ginsberg/Bob Dylan) (4:26) - recorded Rundown
Studios, Santa Monica, CA, Jan 1982, Bob plays bass
In the liner notes to Allen Ginsberg's Omnivore Records 3CD set
The Last Word On "First Blues",
see 2016, producer Pat Thomas says that the
released version is without Bob, despite the fact he's credited in this set's
booklet. However, two versions were recorded, the first without Bob and the
second with Bob. The two circulating takes are timed elsewhere as 5:29 and 4:22, so this
corresponds to the second take, with Bob. Pat Thomas also says he chose not to
release the second version with Bob on the bonus disc with
The Last Word On "First Blues"!
There are two versions of Nurse's Song (William Blake/Allen Ginsberg) on CD3 - Nurse's Song (Experience) (track 9, 2:07) and Nurse's Song (Innocence) (track 21, 7:12). Nurse's Song was one of the songs recorded at the sessions in Nov 1971, but Larry Crum says the versions included here are both without Bob. Nurse's Song (R-1648) appears on Allen Ginsberg's Omnivore Records 3CD set The Last Word On "First Blues", see 2016, and this is indeed a version with Bob. Another version of Nurse's Song performed by Allen Ginsberg at Gerdes Folk City, NYC, October 23, 1975, was included in the film Renaldo & Clara, see VHS & DVD 1970s.
Do The Meditation Rock (Allen Ginsberg) was one of the songs recorded at Rundown Studios, Santa Monica, CA, 23 Feb 1982, with Bob playing bass, but Larry Crum again says the version on CD4 (4:03) was recorded in 1989 without Bob. The version of Do The Meditation Rock that appears on Allen Ginsberg's Omnivore Records 3CD boxed set The Last Word On "First Blues", (R-1651, see 2016), is the Feb 1982 version with Bob.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Bob Stacy and Larry Crum for information and scans.

All but the Australian release came in old-style double CD jewel cases, with two
booklets, one 12-pages, the other 24-pages. The European release was made in
Austria for distribution throughout Europe, and has clear trays,
with the same inside picture on both inserts. Bob's contribution is on CD2.
The Japanese release has solid colour trays, so there is no inside picture.
It has a black/blue obi with orange and white text. The obi is dated
"94-11-12" and has price ¥3,600. There were two US releases, the first had the
discs imported from Austria. Jack from Canada's second release US copy has an amusing sticker
on the back that says "Oops! 'Deja Vu' was really written by David Crosby."
Stuart Moore's Australian release comes in a slimline 2CD jewel case, and both
booklets and the CDs have "Made in Australia".
