Knocked Out Loaded
(1986)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Preliminary front artwork by Rick Griffin - scan by Arie de Reus

The rumour at the time was that Down In The Groove was intended by Bob to be a double album but was cut down to a single album by Columbia. Certainly promos were released with two alternative track listings before the final tracklist was decided and the album was eventually released in May 1988. However, I have yet to see any physical evidence of a two disc set.

Thanks to Arie de Reus for the 1987 drawing by artist Rick Griffin (1948-91) as a preliminary study for the cover of the Dylan album then tentatively named Sheep in Wolves Clothing or Down In The Grove! The drawing is 12½" x 12½" in size.

Out-takes from this album have been officially released as follows:

Down In The Groove promo versions: Let's Stick Together (R-0195 - unfaded version); Got Love If You Want It (R-0196); Important Words (R-0194); The Usual (R-0191 - from the album Hearts Of Fire: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). For all these, see 1987

Sidewalks, Fences And Walls (Maurice Gimbel/Jerry Williams Jr.) - recorded Sunset Sound Studios, Los Angeles, CA, 5 Mar 1987 - four versions on a cassette tape which surfaced in 2007

The Bootleg Series Vol. 16 - Springtime In New York 1980-1985 (2021): Death Is Not The End (Full Version) (7:08, Down In The Groove version is edited at 5:10)

CBS 460267 1 (East Germany) - Side 1 scan by Lars M. Banke
This album was also released in the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany). The records of the East German release were manufactured at the Amiga pressing plant in Potsdam-Babelsberg (East Berlin) for sale in the East German Intershop "hard currency" shops. They come in the Dutch sleeve above but in a plain inner sleeve, not a picture inner sleeve like the Dutch release. The red CBS record labels still say "MADE IN HOLLAND" but the records can be identified by their matrix numbers, different from the Dutch numbers above. The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 460 267 1A K88 1C, Side 2 - 460 267 2A K88 1 C.

CBS 460267 1 (SE) (Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (1988 release)

This album has a picture inner sleeve like the Dutch album above. The outer and inner sleeves were printed in Spain by Offset ALG. The record was made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A. and has red CBS labels.

CBS/Sony COL 460267 1 (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1992 release)

That there was a 1992 CBS/Sony re-release of this Spanish album is very surprising because Down In The Groove was the worst selling Dylan album in Spain! The rear sleeve has a CBS/Sony logo instead of a CBS logo, even though this copy has a big price sticker from El Corte Inglés (995 pesetas, €6.00) hiding this logo. The text at the bottom of the rear sleeve is also different. This reissue doesn't include the original inner sleeve. The record labels have red CBS/Sony logos. Note Shenandoah is misspelled "SHENANDAH" on Side 2. This song title is correct on the first Spanish release. The record was made in Spain by Tecnodisco S.A. for CBS/Sony and copy shown has multiple matrix numbers: Side 1 – “01-460267-1” plus "HP SPAIN" plus “PAL-40957-2” plus "DMM Precision US" plus “460267-1-A”, Side 2 – “01-460267-B” plus "HP SPAIN" plus “PBL-40957-4” plus "DMM Precision" plus “460267-1-B”.

"Down In The Groove" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS 460267 1 (Greece), Jun 1988:

CBS 460267 1 (Greece) - front scan by Gerd Rundel

Both the sleeve and the record of this album were made in Greece. The copy shown may be a promo, with a hard-to-see embossed stamp at top right of the front sleeve and at top left of the rear sleeve. The rear sleeve has what looks like the same information as the Dutch sleeve at top right but three codes below the CBS logo at top right have been blacked out. The UK rear sleeve is significantly different at top right, but the Greek rear sleeve has the UK sleeve copyright lines at the bottom (omitting the Shorepak printer information), plus added Greek information in English and Greek printed vertically at bottom right. There is a double-sided insert instead of a printed inner sleeve. The record has red CBS labels with English and Greek text round the circumference. Gerd Rundel's copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 460267 A CR 410 A8, Side 2 - CBS 460267 B CR 410 A8. The record of Hans Seegers' copy has the same matrix numbers.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and to Gerd Rundel for further information and scans.

"Down In The Groove" - test pressing and promo/commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia 120.017 (Argentina), Jun 1988:
These LPs (mispressed to be the same as the second Down In The Groove test pressing, see 1987) have nothing on the sleeve or record labels to indicate the track changes, they just list the regular tracks but plays the replaced tracks, Got Love If You Want It and The Usual.

Columbia 120.017 (Argentina) - test pressing front scan by Lars M. Banke

Lars M. Banke has a test pressing of this album in a white card promotional sleeve with a sticker on the rear sleeve listing the Spanish titles of the regular tracks, but where the record plays the rarities. For more details, see 1988.

Columbia 120.017 (Argentina) - Side 2 scan by Hermann Rechberger (original and corrected releases)

The corrected commercial release is visually identical to the first pressing with the rarities listed in 1988. Note the album title is on the front left instead of its usual position on the front right!

The rear sleeve has the same picture as the US release but in black and white. The titles are translated into Spanish with the exception of the names Sally Sue Brown and Shenandoah. Another difference from the US release is that the musicians and producer are listed on the right hand side of the rear sleeve. On the record labels the tracks are listed both in Spanish and English.

Michel Pomarede has bought the Mexican edition of the LP Down in the Groove, and noticed some differences in the  translations into Spanish of the titles on the rear sleeve when compared to the Argentinean release:

Let's Stick Together = "Permanezcamos Juntos" (Mexico); "Quedémonos Juntos" (Argentina). Both are a correct translation, just a different verb used.

When Did You Leave Heaven? = "Cuándo Dejaste El Cielo?" (Mexico); "Cuando Dejaste El Paraíso?" (Argentina) - this is a more correct translation, as "Paraíso" is Heaven, while "Cielo" is Sky,

Had A Dream About You, Baby = "Soñé Contigo Nena" (Mexico); "Tuve Un Sueño Contigo" (Argentina). Both are a correct translation, perhaps the Mexican one is better because "Nena" means Baby.

Ugliest Girl In The World = "La Mujer Mas Fea Del Mundo" (Mexico); "La Chica Más Fea Del Mundo" (Argentina) - this is a more correct translation because "Chica" is Girl, while "Mujer" is Woman.

Ninety Miles An Hour (Down A Dead End Street) = "Noventa Milas Por Hora (En Un Callejon Sin Salida)" (Mexico); "Noventa Milas Por Hora (En Una Calle Sin Salida) (Argentina). Both are a correct translation, "una Calle" is a street, "un Callejón" is a small street, but it also means a dead-end street.

Rank Strangers To Me = "Gente Extraños Para Mi" (Mexico); "Extraños Para Mí" (Argentina). Both are a correct translation, "Gente" means people.

Thanks to Hermann Rechberger, Sergio Mariano Romay, Lars M. Banke and Michel Pomarede for information and scans.

"Down In The Groove" - stereo cassette release with different tracks, Columbia 620.017 (Argentina), Jun 1988:

The commercial Argentinean cassette release lists the regular tracks but also plays the rarities and is listed in 1988.

Columbia 620.017 (Argentina) - cassette leader tape with CBS logos, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

The song titles are the same as those of the regular release. There is a short insert with the song titles in Spanish on the outside and in English and Spanish on the inside. The cassette is white with red text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. Again the song titles are the same as those of the regular release, listed in Spanish only. The clear leader tape has CBS logos.

"Down In The Groove" - promo stereo cassette release, CBS 8224-4 (Uruguay), Jun 1988:

CBS 8224-4 (Uruguay) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

Down In The Groove was released in Uruguay in cassette format only. Curiously, it is incorrectly dated on the cassette labels as 1987. Unlike the Argentinean cassette release above, this release plays the regular tracks.

It has a folded cassette insert on textured paper that is blank on the reverse. The text is in English only (except for the copyright text, which includes “Made In Uruguay” in English). The insert has the Dolby System logo on the front and on the spine. On the listing for Side 2 the writer's credit to Albert E. Brumley for Rank Strangers To Me is missing.

The cassette is white with pink paper labels, printed in black and blue, incorrectly dated 1987. Side 1 has the text “PARA DIFUSION – PROHIBIDA LA VENTA [FOR BROADCAST – SALE PROHIBITED]”, rubber stamped in black ink. Again, the text is only in English (except the copyright text). “AGADU” (the name of the Uruguayan copyright organisation) is not present. The folded card insert was printed in Uruguay by FIMASA and the cassette was made by WEL S.A. (like the Uruguayan releases of Oh Mercy, Under The Red Sky, Good As I Been To You and Traveling Wilburys Volume One). The cassette can be opened, as there are five screws on Side 2.

Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.

The rare Zimbabwean release has the same catalogue number as the South African release. It was made in Zimbabwe by the Zimbabwe Music Corporation. The sleeve is made of fragile recycled cardboard and was printed in Zimbabwe by Belmont Printers of Bulawayo. The manufacturer and printer information are on gold panels, difficult to scan. The Zimbabwean record has white CBS labels with blue text and "CBS" in a pink/red colour. "rpm" is misspelled "rmp". Both copies shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF3218-A (ADD), Side 2 - ASF3218-B (ADD).

This release comes as part of a 3CD set Original Album Classics: Bob Dylan containing three not as yet remastered albums: Empire Burlesque (1985), Down In The Groove (1988) and Under The Red Sky (1990). As the price per set is only £8.99 it's very unlikely these have been remastered now. Other artists in this series include Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Patti Smith and Jeff Buckley. The three albums are in card sleeves inside a CD-width slipcase. The individual albums are numbered 88697742502CD1, 88697742502CD2 and 88697742502CD3.

The picture on the front of the slipcase comes from 1986's Hard To Handle video of Bob live with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, see VHS & DVDs 1980s.

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK29" plus "DISC 33". This album has been remastered, so is the eleventh Dylan album remastered for this project. The CDs are different in detail, the US Down In The Groove CD has catalogue number "88691924312D33", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-33". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Sony Music SICP 30577 (Japan) - front with obi, picture from CD Japan web-site
Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1980s albums from Saved to Oh Mercy will be released in Japan on 27 Aug 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30571 to SICP 30579. The 2013 remastered Down In The Groove is SICP 30577, more details will be added when available.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
