R-0600 Honest With Me - radio edit (4:46) of album track from "Love And Theft"
This two-track CD-R single, released for the 2002 Grammy Awards, has no catalogue number and comes in a thin CD single jewel case. The other track is the album version of Honest With Me (5:49). The CD-R is silver - the colours are reflections from the copier.
The CD-R insert text concerns the nomination of "Love And Theft" for three Grammy Awards. For a Grammy Awards compilation album with the complete album version of Honest With Me, see International Album Releases (Various Artist Compilations) 2002.
Information and colour photocopies from Pachi Becerril.
The second one-track promo CD-R from Sony Music Studios containing the R-0600 4:46 edit of Honest With Me is dated "2/7/02". It comes in a slimline CD single jewel case with a single-sided paper insert. Thanks to Anthony Pignataro for finding this item on eBay and to Gerd Rundel for scans.

This appearance is slightly shorter than the Joan Baez Live At Newport track, but the only difference is crowd noise cut from the end of the track so it hasn't been allocated a new R-number. This album also contains a previously unreleased performance of The Times They Are A-Changin' by Joan Baez, and Judy Collins singing Blowin' In The Wind.
Thanks to Tim Dunn for the information and for checking the performances, and thanks to Jack from Canada for scans. For the second album in this Vanguard series, Let Freedom Sing: This Land Is My Land II, see 2003.
"Historical Recordings" - bonus CD single with "Love And
Theft", Sony Records International SBCI 80001 (Japan), Mar 2002:
As noted in 2001 there was no Limited
Edition of "Love And Theft"
in Japan. The regular edition had a sticker inviting purchasers to send off a postcard to Sony Japan for
the chance to win one of 2000 copies of the bonus disc or other
"Dylan goods". This bonus disc did not actually arrive at the
homes of the lucky winners until March 2002! Thanks to Toyohiko Tejima and Hans
Seegers for information and scans.

The inside of the booklet is very interesting, as it gives a history of I Was Young When I Left Home and the "Minnesota Hotel Tape". The "Minnesota Hotel" was actually Bonnie Beecher's apartment in Minneapolis, MN, so-called because she allowed so many people to stay there for free! (Bonnie Beecher is now Jaharana Romney, and is married to Hugh "Wavy Gravy" Romney, the hippie political activist.) On the right-hand side is a full 26-track listing of this recording, of which only Hard Times In New York Town is available on a regular Dylan album (The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, 1991). Wade In The Water (R-0240) from this tape was released in 2001 on the Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see 2001
In The Evening and Long John from this session previously appeared on a UK Emidisc acetate in the 1960s, see Questionable Releases

The Band plus Guests - "The Last Waltz" - 4CD set in
book-style cover:
Warner Bros/Rhino Records R2 78278 (USA), 16 Apr 2002; Rhino Records/Warner Bros
8122-78278-2 (Australia), 2002; Rhino Records/Warner Bros
8122-79899-3 (Europe), 29 Sep 2008:
This 4CD set contains 54 tracks, 24 of which are newly released, all
remastered by Robbie Robertson. For the original Warner Bros 3LP set (later 2CDs), see 1978.
At the same time, the original 30-track set was reissued by Rhino on DVD-A (audio-only
DVD in Dolby 5.1 surround sound), see below. For details of the original 1978 film see
VHS & DVD 1970s, for details of the 2002 Expanded Edition see
VHS & DVD 2000s Part 1. Thanks to Larry
Crum for pointing out that all the Dylan tracks have been remixed and both
R-0143 and R-0144 are longer than the versions on the 1978 3LP set (and those in
both the 1978 and 2002 versions of the film) with longer instrumental breaks.

Rhino Records/Warner Bros 8122-79899-3
(Europe) - spine scan by Hans Seegers
Stuart Moore's Australian copy has discs manufactured in Germany, so is probably the European release also. Thanks to Hans Seegers for scans of the 2008 European release, which is in a smaller but thicker book-style cover than the US release. It has an 80-page booklet.
In answer to queries, this 4CD boxed set still does not contain the complete concert - Georgia On My Mind performed by The Band is missing, and King Harvest by The Band appears in a performance from the rehearsal, not the concert performance itself. Also, the order of the concert is altered considerably. The Band played a long set on their own, then a set with guests one after the other, then a shorter set on their own again. Finally Bob came on for his set with The Band, followed by the finale. In this release the songs with guests other than Bob are misleadingly sequenced throughout the discs as they were on the original 1978 release.
In Feb 2003 Rhino reissued the original 1978 release of The Last Waltz as a 2CD set and also as a 30-track Limited Edition 3LP 180gm vinyl boxed set. The material reproduces the original album, but is taken from the remastered 4CD 54-track release above. As it's the same format as the 1978 release, for more information see 1978.
The Band plus Guests - "The Last Waltz" - DVD-A release: Warner Bros/Rhino
Records 78260 (USA), 29 Aug 2002:
This is a DVD-A (audio-only DVD in Dolby 5.1 surround sound) release of
the original 30-track Warner Bros 3LP set. It therefore does not include Hazel
(R-0540) from the new 54-track release (see above).
R-0755 Baby Let Me Follow You Down (Rev Gary Davies, arr. Eric von Schmidt) - reprise, 5.1 Surround Sound version of R-0143 (see above)
R-0756 I Shall Be Released - 5.1 Surround Sound version of R-0144 (see above)
All tracks recorded live with The Band, Winterland, San Francisco, CA, Nov 1976. R-0140, R-0540, R-0141-0143 - Bob Dylan with The Band; R-0144 - Bob Dylan with The Band and ensemble.
The Japanese release has a wraparound card obi. The front insert is a 16-page stapled booklet in English and there's also a 24-page Japanese/English booklet. The disc itself is made in the USA.
Thanks to Jack from Canada and Wil Gielen for information and scans.

This CD single was given away with purchases of "Love And Theft" and other

information this CD was also available at the FNAC record shop in Brussels free
with the European The Essential Bob Dylan (see 2001),
and therefore probably at all the FNAC stores in France/Belgium. I'm also told
this item was given away with the regular release of "Love And Theft"

Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ), originally included on the 1998 European Love Sick CD
singles, Europe
and Japan, and on the Australian Tour Special Limited Edition of Time
Out of Mind, for both see 1998
(This performance date is given incorrectly as "19 Feb 1998",
Bob appeared in Cincinatti, OH, that night but didn't perform Blind Willie McTell! This repeats a
previous misdating, as the date was wrongly given as "Feb
1998" on the Love Sick singles, although it was correct as "Aug
1997" on the Australian Time
Out of Mind release.)
For the 4-track Things Have Changed Live And Unreleased CD singles given away in the USA which also contained R-0436 and R-0272, see 2001. For the 4-track Live & Rare CD singles given away in mainland Europe and Canada also see 2001.
This promo single was also released in the UK in a different card sleeve identical to that of the Aug 2002 Canadian release below, thanks to Ole Lien for information and scans. The CD is exactly the same. Thanks to Nol Grint for the information that this CD was also available in Holland - he says "There was a coupon in a newspaper, with this coupon you could get Live & Rare or Live & Rare 2 for free if you bought The Essential Bob Dylan. that was one way to get it. The other way to get Live & Rare 2 was with another coupon, which was inside Live & Rare. This coupon says you also must buy The Essential Bob Dylan to get a free Live & Rare 2 sampler."

R-0552 Waitin' For You
This track is one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other). This film is based on the novels by Rebecca Wells, and like O Brother, Where Art Thou?, has a soundtrack mixing original recordings with re-recordings of period songs by modern artists, or in Bob's case an original song in "period" style. Other artists participating are Macy Gray, Lauryn Hill, Alison Krauss, Tony Bennett, Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo with Got Love If You Want It - for Bob's version see 1988. The soundtrack is produced by T-Bone Burnett (who also produced O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and original music in the film is by David Mansfield, both veteran colleagues of Bob. Thanks to Peter Gilmer for release information and to Joy Munsey for
researching the song. For more information see

What purported to be an alternate take of Waitin' For You to the version on this soundtrack album appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (bobdylan.com). However, it was the same version as R-0552.
The German promo shown is on Columbia in a thin jewel case and has no catalogue number. The reverse of the front insert is in German. The film title is misspelled "Devine Secrets" on the CD itself. The French promo copy (also made in Germany) comes in a standard jewel case with a large French language sticker. The English language sticker was used Europe-wide. The rear insert of the French promo is similar to the reverse of the US digipak.
The US promo copy, also DMZ/Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax CK 86534, has the commercial packaging with a blue/white promo sticker covering the barcode. The Canadian release is identical to the USA release with the same catalogue number.
Thanks to Tim Dunn, Hans Seegers and Hervé from France for information and pictures.
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for scans of the European CD made in Austria, which comes in a regular jewel case with the German promo front (see above). It has copy protection which means it will not play in a PC or Apple Mac (Jean-Pol confirms this).

Canada had a single "Live & Rare" CDNEK 1570 release in 2001 which was the same as the Things Have Changed: Live & Unreleased "blue promo", so this would have been new to them. |

The front sticker advertises the Canadian tour dates in Aug 2002. There is also included what appears to be the promo leaflet from the 2001 US release of this set - it advertises the "Love And Theft" CD and the US Arena Tour starting 5 Oct 2001.
Thanks to Gil Walker for finding this item on eBay, to Mary Lewis for the bonus disc scan, and to Peter Pearson for his help on clearing up the "red promo"/"blue promo" confusion!
"Live & Rare 2" - promo CD

there in Aug 2002. It's the same Live & Rare 2 CD single given away
in the UK in May 2002 when Bob was touring there (see above), with different
catalogue number and artwork. Thanks to Mary Lewis for the information this CD
comes in a standard jewel case with a front folded insert only.

R-0598 It Ain't Me, Babe (3:31)
This is the shortest edit so far of the full version R-0252 (4:45) from Joan Baez Live At Newport (see 1997), with no intro and just 11 seconds of outro! Slightly longer edits of this performance were also included on the 1998 compilation albums Vanguard Sessions: Folk Duets and Vanguard Sessions: Folk Duets (for both see 1998) Information from Tim Dunn. |

All the advance publicity for this album and artwork still shown on online
retailers' web-sites showed the album title as Kindred Spirits: A Tribute To The
Music Of Johnny Cash - obviously there was a very late name change!
Thanks to Bill Hester for the Australian scans and to Gil Lamont for confirming the album's US title. Thanks to Hans Seegers for the scan of the Canadian CD-R promo and to Jack from Canada for scans of the Canadian commercial release, which again has the "Songs" title.
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information that a 26-track "Radio Special" promo CD was available on eBay in Mar 2007, no picture available.
This performance is now available on the Phantom Sound & Vision compilation A Tribute to Johhny Cash, see 2008.

(see 1980), and the best version available on CD. The CD is accompanied by an hour-long documentary on DVD called "Keith Green - Your Love Breaks Through", which includes footage of Bob. Keith Green was killed in an air crash on 28 Jul 1982. Thanks to Freddy Ordoñez Araque and Anthony Pignataro for information about this album and to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for scans. "The Bootleg Series
Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue" Limited Edition with
Bonus DVD - 2CD set + DVD, Columbia
Legacy C2K 87047
(USA/Canada); Columbia Legacy 510140 3 (Europe)/SME Records SICP 293-5 (Japan), 26 Nov
2002/Columbia Legacy 5101403000 (Australia), 9 Dec 2002:
This Limited Edition is included here because the bonus DVD was only available
for a short period. For more information, including pictures of the full packaging and artwork
for the 2CD set,
see International Albums
(Regular).
The two performances on film on the bonus DVD are:
R-0245-3 Tangled Up In Blue (video) - live, Boston, MA, 21 Nov 1975 (evening show), from Renaldo & Clara (see VHS & DVD 1970s) This video previously appeared in the 1998 video Rolling Stone: 20 Years Of Rock 'N' Roll (see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 2), and the CD+ version of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 3 (see 1995)
R-0596
Isis (video) -
live, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975,
from Renaldo
&
Clara (see VHS & DVD 1970s), edited performance (4:10), previously unreleased
Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing out the audio part of this is a new mix and an
edit of R-0533, see below.
These are complemented by an audio performance in Dolby 5.1 sound:
R-0533 Isis
(audio)
-
live, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975,
as above but complete performance (5:21), remix of original complete stereo audio
performance released on 4 Songs From "Renaldo &
Clara" (see 1978), on US and Dutch 7" Jokerman
singles (see 1984),
and Biograph (see 1985)
Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing this out.
I thought initially the release of this album disqualified one performance from the Searching For A Gem list:
R-0137 It Ain't Me, Babe - live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975
This performance was originally released on the 1978 US Columbia promo 12" EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara" (see 1978). It also appeared on the Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection #3 (see 1993), European Dignity CD singles (see 1995), and the Japanese live compilation CD Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances (see 2001)
Larry Crum has now pointed out the version here is a remix of that performance, so R-0137 remains a rarity.
The US Bonus DVD shown here from Hervé from France is a promo and has the additional text "FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY - NOT FOR SALE". Thanks also to Wil Gielen for the Japanese scan.
Peter van der Kerk informs me that when he bought his copy of the Limited Edition in an independent record shop in Holland, he received free copies of the promotional CD singles Live & Rare (see 2001) and Live & Rare 2 (see above)! I haven't heard of this anywhere else, so it may be a promotion from that shop only.
Another song from these four shows which has already appeared officially but is sadly not included in this set is:
R-0138 Never Let Me Go (Joseph C. Scott) - live duet with Joan Baez from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, from the Columbia promo 12" EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara" (see 1978), also released on the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3 (see 1993)
