"Historical Recordings" - bonus CD single with "Love And
Theft", Sony Records International SBCI 80001 (Japan), Mar 2002:
As noted in 2001 there was no Limited

in Japan. The regular edition had a sticker inviting purchasers to send off a postcard to Sony Japan for
the chance to win one of 2000 copies of the bonus disc or other
"Dylan goods". This bonus disc did not actually arrive at the
homes of the lucky winners until March 2002! Thanks to Toyohiko Tejima and Hans

Direction Home, Sep 2005, in a vesion with a spoken intro R-0515-2 The Times They Are A-Changin' - alternate take recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 23 Oct 1963, previously unreleased The inside of the booklet is very interesting, as it gives a history of I Was Young When I Left Home and the "Minnesota Hotel Tape". The "Minnesota Hotel" was actually Bonnie Beecher's apartment in Minneapolis, MN, so-called because she allowed so many people to stay there for free! (Bonnie Beecher is now Jaharana Romney, and is married to Hugh "Wavy Gravy" Romney, the hippie political activist.) On the right-hand side is a full 26-track listing of this recording, of which only Hard Times In New York Town is available on a regular Dylan album (The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, 1991). book-style cover:
Warner Bros/Rhino Records R2 78278 (USA), 16 Apr 2002:
This 4CD set contains 54 tracks, 24 of which are newly released, all
remastered by Robbie Robertson. For the original Warner Bros 3LP set (later 2CDs), see 1978.
At the same time, the original 30-track set was reissued by Rhino on DVD-A (audio-only
DVD in Dolby 5.1 surround sound), see below. For details of the original 1978 film see
VHS & DVD 1970s, for details of the 2002 Expanded Edition see

Crum for pointing out that all the Dylan tracks have been remixed and both
R-0143 and R-0144 are longer than the versions on the 1978 3LP set (and those in
both the 1978 and 2002 versions of the film) with longer instrumental breaks.

In answer to queries, this 4CD boxed set still does not contain the complete concert - Georgia On My Mind performed by The Band is missing, and King Harvest by The Band appears in a performance from the rehearsal, not the concert performance itself. Also, the order of the concert is altered considerably. The Band played a long set on their own, then a set with guests one after the other, then a shorter set on their own again. Finally Bob came on for his set with The Band, followed by the finale. In this release the songs with guests before Bob's set are misleadingly sequenced throughout the discs as they were on the original 1978 release. In Feb 2003 Rhino reissued the original 1978 release of The Last Waltz as a 2CD set and also as a 30-track Limited Edition 3LP 180gm vinyl boxed set. The material reproduces the original album, but is taken from the remastered 4CD 54-track release above. As it's the same format as the 1978 release, for more information see 1978. |

R-0552 Waitin' For You
This track is one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other). This film is based on the novels by Rebecca Wells, and like O Brother, Where Art Thou?, has a soundtrack mixing original recordings with re-recordings of period songs by modern artists, or in Bob's case an original song in "period" style. Other artists participating are Macy Gray, Lauryn Hill, Alison Krauss, Tony Bennett, Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo with Got Love If You Want It - for Bob's version see 1988. The soundtrack is produced by T-Bone Burnett (who also produced O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and original music in the film is by David Mansfield, both veteran colleagues of Bob. Thanks to Peter Gilmer for release information and to Joy Munsey for
researching the song. For more information see
What purported to be an alternate take of Waitin' For You to the version on this soundtrack album appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (bobdylan.com). However, it was the same version as R-0552. |

![]() Columbia C5K 86024 (Canada) front of slipcase showing the three Greatest Hits album covers, the Aug 2002 Canadian tour dates and details of the bonus disc, scan by Peter Pearson |
This set, originally released in the USA in 2001, was released in Canada to mark Bob's Canadian summer tour, Aug 2002, and has the three Greatest Hits titles plus a bonus disc which is reported on the cover to be the same as the Things have Changed: Live & Unreleased "red promo", given away in the USA in May 2001 (see 2001). Canada had a single "Live & Rare" CDNEK 1570 release in 2001 which was the same as the Things Have Changed: Live & Unreleased "blue promo", so this would have been new to them. However, both Mary Lewis in Canada and Peter Pearson in the UK have found their copies do not contain this disc! They have instead as the bonus CD the Canadian version of the "blue promo CD", Columbia CDNEK 1570 (see 2001), this time in a card sleeve instead of a jewel case. (The CD picture is in the 2001 entry.) The US release of this boxed set also contained the "blue promo CD", again see 2001. The tracklisting of the "blue promo" is as below: R-0469-5 Things Have Changed
R-0436-8 Blowin' In The Wind - Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, Santa Cruz, CA, 16 Mar 2000, previously included on a bonus live CD with the UK release of The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000 R-0272-7 Blind Willie McTell - Jones Beach, NY, 17 Aug 1997 - same as BDC2 (see Online Performances (bobdylan.com) ), originally included on the 1998 European Love Sick CD singles, see 1998 R-0271-7 Roving Gambler (traditional) - El Rey Theater, Los Angeles, 17 Dec 1997, originally included on the 1998 European Love Sick CD singles, see 1998 If anyone actually has a copy of this boxed set with the "red promo", please let me know! The front sticker advertises the Canadian tour dates in Aug 2002. There is also included what appears to be the promo leaflet from the 2001 US release of this set - it advertises the "Love And Theft" CD and the US Arena Tour starting 5 Oct 2001. Thanks to Gil Walker for finding this item on eBay, to Mary Lewis for the bonus disc scan, and to Peter Pearson for his help on clearing up the "red promo"/"blue promo" confusion! |

The US Bonus DVD shown here from Hervé from France is a promo and has the additional text "FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY - NOT FOR SALE". Thanks also to Hervé for the Japanese promo set. Peter van der Kerk informs me that when he bought his copy of the Limited Edition in an independent record shop in Holland, he received free copies of the promotional CD singles Live & Rare (see 2001) and Live & Rare 2 (see above)! I haven't heard of this anywhere else, so it may be a promotion from that shop only. Another song from these four shows which has already appeared officially but is sadly not included in this set is: R-0138 Never Let Me Go (Joseph C. Scott) - live duet with Joan Baez from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, from the Columbia promo 12" EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara" (see 1978), also released on the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3 (see 1993) |

Tangled Up In
Blue
(Alternate Live Version) - live, Boston Music Hall, 21 Nov 1975 (evening
show), with extended intro, unique to this 7" single "The CD version (Boston Music Hall, 21 Nov 1975, evening show) starts simply with guitar and singing, time 4:40. The 7” single performance starts with Dylan's guitar. Dylan coughs twice, then someone in the audience asks for Masters of War, Dylan answers with "What!". While he is still playing the intro to Tangled Up In Blue he asks "Larry, are you still there?" and then starts the song (time 4:53). So, the important question now is - in which show did he ask for Larry?" (Presumably Larry Sloman.) Thanks to Les Kokay's booklet "Sounds of the Underground: A Collector's Guide to the Rolling Thunder Revue 1975-1976" for positively identifying the call for Larry as the Boston evening show.
