R-0384 Forever Young - 4.25 edit of the live version from Bob Dylan At Budokan on A-side. The B-side has the full album version (5:27), which was the A-side of a commercial EP with the same catalogie number, see US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1979. The single had no picture sleeve, but came in the generic 1975-1979 black/white/grey UK CBS sleeve - see 7" Single Sleeves (the reverse sleeve is the fourth example). Thanks to Fraser Robertson for information and Hans Seegers for scans. |

"Slow Train Coming" - vinyl album, CBS DNW 2402 (South
Africa/Rhodesia/Zimbabwe), 1979:
There was also a South African cassette release, but I have no information
about whether it had the edit or not.
The same catalogue number was also used in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) but with different orange/yellow CBS labels. In South Africa the sleeve was made by Interpak and in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe by Belmont Printers of Bulawayo. Both the South African and Rhodesian releases were manufactured for CBS by The Gramophone Company, part of EMI (bought by Universal in 2012). The Rhodesian/Zimbabwean album was released four times with different sleeve details/record labels. Full details of these releases are on the Slow Train Coming page of International Album Releases (Regular Albums).
Thanks to Tom Willems for information and to Wayne Carr and Manuel García Jara for further information and scans.
"Slow Train Coming" - 8-track stereo cartridge releases, Columbia FCA 36120 (USA/Canada), Aug 1979:
R-1236A Do Right To Me, Baby (Do Unto
Others) (Part I) - first part of song split over two
programs on US and Canadian Columbia 8-track releases of Slow Train Coming,
1979
R-1236B Do Right To Me, Baby (Do Unto
Others) (Part II) - second part of song split over two
programs on US and Canadian Columbia 8-track releases of Slow Train Coming,
1979
This song occurs twice, first split between Programs 1 and 2, and then repeated in full on Program 4! Because the split track is a rarity, these cartridges are listed here as well as on the Slow Train Coming album page.
Thanks to Stuart Moore and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Gotta Serve Somebody"/"Trouble In Mind" - 7"
promo and commercial singles, Columbia 1-11072
(USA/Canada), 15 Aug 1979/CBS BA 222568 (Australia/New Zealand),
Sep 1979:
These singles did not have picture sleeves.

The white label promo single has the long (album - 5:22) version on the other side.
Columbia 1-11072 promo and commercial 7" singles (USA)
These singles have R-0148 on the A-side plus:
R-0149 Trouble In Mind
- Slow Train Coming out-take (4:17), B-side of single with one
verse omitted, lyrics on bobdylan.com
here
(full version is 5:13)
This song was released as a slightly longer edit (4:50) on
Disc 3 of the 8CD+DVD set
The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 - Trouble No More 1979-1981 (Deluxe
Edition), 3 Nov 2017. R-0149 remains a rarity.
This US single occurs in two variants - the first variant omits publisher information below the catalogue number on the right of the centre hole, the second includes it. Promo singles have "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" rubber-stamped on the labels with either a one line or two line stamp.
This single was also released to jukeboxes, and the jukebox strip is shown above.
Columbia 1-11072 commercial 7" singles (Canada)
The Canadian single exists in two label variants - the first has "Copyright ©" between the timing and the publisher credits on the right hand side of the centre hole, the second does not. For a 1997 Columbia Canada "Hall of Fame"/"Disque d'Or" 7" stereo single with R-0148 as the A-side and Man Gave Names To All The Animals as the B-side, see 1997.
CBS BA 222568 promo and commercial 7" singles (Australia/New Zealand)
Information from Hans Seegers - in Australia the promo single and two releases of the commercial single all have R-0148 as the A-side and R-0149 as the B-side.
The promo single has the words "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" printed below the CBS logo.
Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the New Zealand release, also CBS BA 222568. The promo single shown has a white "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" sticker on the A-side, the B-side is the same as the commercial single.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

(Mexico), 1979:

(see below).

"Precious Angel (edit)"/"Trouble In Mind" - 8" CBS acetate, 7" promo and commercial singles (UK/NL/West Germany), 31 Aug 1979:
S CBS 7828 (UK):
These three singles have two rarities, an edit of the A-side (4.12-4:21 instead of 6:30) and a non-album B-side (also edited to 4:09-4:17 instead of the longer version of 5:13).
R-0363 Precious Angel - edit (4:12-4:21) of album track from Slow Train Coming (6:30)
R-0149-3 Trouble In Mind - Slow Train Coming out-take (4:09-4:17), B-side of single with one verse omitted, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
Even though these tracks have different timings on different singles, I assume they are all the same two edits. Thanks to Ian Woodward for finding a UK acetate on eBay. It has orange labels from CBS Recording Studios, 31-37 Whitfield Street, London W1P 5RE, with handwritten text in black ink on an orange label from CBS Studios, Whitfield Street, London. The length of R-0363 is shown as 4:20. The record comes in a Pyral sleeve. Bruce Mulle now has this acetate, and the Pyral sleeve has a handwritten release date of "31/8/79" (31 Aug 1979) at top right, not shown in the eBay photo.
Both the UK and West German singles were available as white label promos as well as commercial singles. The UK singles came in CBS generic sleeves.

"Precious Angel"/"Trouble In Mind" - 7" commercial single, CBS 7828 (Italy), 1979:
CBS 7828 (Italy) - front (my copy) |
R-0149-4 Trouble In Mind - Slow Train Coming out-take (4:17), B-side of single with one verse omitted, lyrics on bobdylan.com here The Italian single had the full 6:30 album version of Precious Angel as the A-side, not the 4:12-4:21 edit as on the UK/NL/West German releases above! It has a variant front sleeve design with different text font and position, and a wider crop of the album front picture, with a stronger background colour. The minor changes in the rear sleeve graphics are odd - in West Germany the vinyl album is labelled "LP", in Holland it's called "THE ALBUM" and in Italy the text is missing. In contrast, the CBS logo is on the right in Holland and Italy, and on the left in West Germany. |

The 5:13 version was finally released officially in Oct 2011 on the Sony Music Germany compilation Pure Dylan: An Intimate Look At Bob Dylan, see 2011. This song was also released in slightly edited form (4:50) on Disc 3 of the 8CD+DVD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 - Trouble No More 1979-1981 (Deluxe Edition), 3 Nov 2017. R-0150 remains a rarity.

"Animals [Man Gave Name To All The Animals]"/"Trouble In Mind" - 7" single, CBS

singles, and this is a third A-side for this B-side!

R-0149-5 Trouble In Mind
- Slow Train Coming out-take (4:17), B-side of single with one
verse omitted, lyrics on bobdylan.com
here For a rare 1979 French jukebox-only 12" single version of "Animals" see US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1979. This record (both commercial and jukebox) had two front sleeve variants with different title formats: the first has "Man Gave Names To All The" above "ANIMALS", the second has "Man Gave Names To All The Animals" below "ANIMALS". The first variant was printed by "Montreuil Offset" (see detail of rear sleeve), the second was printed firstly by "areacem", and then again by "Montreuil Offset", so you can get the second front sleeve with both rear sleeves. To make the situation even more complex, some copies have the sleeve opening on the top, and others on the right! Both jukebox releases shown are regular releases with a sticker on the front sleeve. |

The record itself was released with both paper and "injection" labels. The paper labels have two variants - in the first the A-side title is on two lines, split at "THE", in the second the A-side title is also on two lines, split at "ALL". The circumference text is also different as shown.
Sergio Mariano Romay's copy comes in a sleeve with a variant 2 front and a variant 1 rear, printed by "Montreuil Offset", opening on the right. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels of the first variant style, but with extra text "MADE IN FRANCE" in the circumference text at top right. I have called this variant 1B. The second variant paper labels have "MADE IN FRANCE" in the circumference text at top left. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MPO CBS 7954 A2, Side 2 - MPO CBS 7954 B1. "MPO" is MPO International, Averton, France - "Moularges et Plastiques de l'Ouest [Western Mouldings & Plastics]".
For the injection labels a thin coloured plastic ring-shaped layer is injected into the record itself, and the text/graphics are cut out using a stamp so that the black vinyl underneath shows through, there is no paper label. There are three label variations: the first has a gold coloured label with the A-side title on one line;, the second has a silver coloured label, again with the A-side title on one line; and the second has a dark ochre coloured label with a much larger "BOB DYLAN" and the A-side title on two lines. My copy of the jukebox single has the first injection label design but appears to have the colour of the third variant, but this may just be a scanning deficiency.
A later version of this single had When You Gonna Wake Up? (album version) as the B-side, so is not a rarity. The UK version with the catalogue number CBS 7970 had When He Returns as the B-side. For both see US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1979.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Sergio Magnacca for information, and Hans Seegers for scans.

These promotional albums for DJs are compilations of A-sides of singles released by Columbia US with entries on the US Billboard charts. They were released in Japan to promote the equivalent Japanese releases. For this reason, Gotta Serve Somebody (track 5 on Side 1) is the 3:57 radio edit released in Japan as the A-side of the CBS/Sony 06SP 410 single above, not the full album version from Slow Train Coming (5:23). The other promo albums in this CBS/Sony DJ series had no Dylan involvement.
R-0148-3 Gotta Serve Somebody - edit (3:57)
In the November 1979 album, the Dylan track is classified on the rear sleeve as "new entry" (#39; 21 of September); in the December 1979 album below the position was #24. The record has black/white CBS/Sony promo labels.
Thanks to Jim Siddy for finding this on eBay and to Manuel García Jara for further information and scans.

R-0148-5 Gotta Serve Somebody - edit (3:57) R-0149-6 Trouble In Mind - Slow Train Coming out-take (4:17), B-side of single with one verse omitted, lyrics on bobdylan.com here This Spanish single had a unique sleeve with the title in Spanish (left). The 1980 French, Dutch and UK releases of CBS 8134 list the timing of Gotta Serve Somebody as 3:57 but actually have the full album version (5:23) - a record company error! These are now listed for 1980 in US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1980-89 because they're not actually rarities and have the album track Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking as the B-side. For a 1979 French test pressing of CBS 8134 that correctly shows the timing of Gotta Serve Somebody as 5:23 see US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1979. |

After CBS was established in Spain in 1970, a promo compilation album with its greatest hits of the year was released every year at Christmas time. These albums were called Nuestros éxitos del año [Our Greatest Hits of The Year]. Only Volume 6, released in 1976, includes a Dylan track, Huracán [Hurricane, Part One] (see 1976). In late 1974, to commemorate its fifth anniversary, CBS released a triple album, this time with "Lay Lady Lay" (see International Albums (Various Artists Compilations) 1970s). In late 1979, to commemorate its 10th anniversary, CBS Spain released this 3LP boxed set, again with the edited version of "Huracán" as on the 1976 release. The front of the box has text "Anunciado en TVE [Announced on TV]". Each LP is in a plain dark blue card sleeve with "DISCO 1" to "DISCO 3" on the front. The reverse of each card sleeve is plain dark blue. The records have orange/yellow CBS labels. R-0126 is track 1 on Side 1 of Record 1. |
