Nol Grint informs me the track is faded out during the last verse after Bob sings the line about "I don't care about astronomy" so that the rest of the last verse and the instrumental fade-out are missing. This is a longer edit than the 4:15 US Columbia 7" radio edit R-0456, see below. However, the track is still listed as 5:57 on the Side 1 label.

There is no picture inner sleeve, the song credits and musicians are on the back of the outer sleeve. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels and written matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 36120, Side 2- BL 36120 (as above).

The same number was also used in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) but with different CBS labels. In South Africa the cover was made by Interpak and in Southern Rhodesia by Belmont Printers. The South African release was manufactured for CBS by The Gramophone Company (EMI).

"Gotta Serve Somebody"/"Trouble In Mind" - 7" promo and commercial singles, Columbia 1-11072 (USA/Canada), 15 Aug 1979/CBS BA 222568 (Australia/NZ), Sep 1979:
These singles did not have picture sleeves.

The white label promo single has the long (album - 5:22) version on the other side.

R-0149 Trouble In Mind - Slow Train Coming out-take (4:17), B-side of single with one verse omitted, lyrics on bobdylan.com

This US single occurs in two variants - the first variant omits publisher information below the catalogue number on the right of the centre hole, the second includes it. Promo singles have "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" rubber-stamped on the labels with either a one line or two line stamp.

This single was also released to jukeboxes, and the jukebox strip is shown above.

Information from Hans Seegers - in Australia the promo single and two releases of the commercial single all have R-0148 as the A-side and R-0149 as the B-side.

The promo single has the words "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" printed below the CBS logo.

Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the New Zealand release, also CBS BA 222568. The promo single shown has a white "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" sticker on the A-side, the B-side is the same as the commercial single.

"Hay Que Servir A Alguien [Gotta Serve Somebody]"/"Tratame Bien [Do Right To Me, Baby (Do Unto Others)]"- 7" single, CBS 8213 (Mexico), 1979:
In Spain the A-side title was translated as "Tendras Que Servir A Alguien" (se below).

"Precious Angel"/"Trouble In Mind" - 7" CBS singles (UK/NL/West Germany/Italy), 31 Aug 1979:

This Italian single had the full 6:30 album version of Precious Angel as the A-side, not the 4:21 edit as on the UK/NL/West German release! It has a variant front cover design with different text font and position, and a wider crop of the album cover picture, with a stronger background colour.

The minor changes in the rear sleeve graphics are odd - in Holland the vinyl album is labelled "LP", in West Germany it's called "THE ALBUM" and in Italy the text is missing. In contrast, the CBS logo is on the left in Holland, missing in West Germany, and on the right in Italy.

The US commercial single had Do Right To Me Baby, Slow Train Coming album version, as the B-side, and also had this edit on the A-side.

"Animals [Man Gave Name To All The Animals]"/"Trouble In Mind" - 7" single, CBS 7954 (France), Oct 1979:

This record (both commercial and jukebox) had two front sleeve variants with different title formats: the first has "Man Gave Names To All The" above "ANIMALS", the second has "Man Gave Names To All The Animals" below "ANIMALS". The first variant was printed by "Montreuil Offset" (see detail of rear sleeve), the second was printed firstly by "areacem", and then again by "Montreuil Offset", so you get the second front sleeve with both rear sleeves. To make the situation even more complex, some copies have the sleeve opening on the top, and others on the right! The jukebox release is a regular release with a sticker on the front sleeve. The record itself was released with both paper and "injection" labels. The paper labels have two A-side variants - in the first the title is on two lines, split at "THE", in the second the title is also on two lines, split at "ALL".

For the injection labels a thin coloured plastic ring-shaped layer is injected into the record itself, and the text/graphics are cut out using a stamp so that the black vinyl underneath shows through, there is no paper label. There are three label variations: the first has a gold coloured label with the A-side title on one line;, the second has a silver coloured label, again with the A-side title on one line; and the second has a dark ochre coloured label with a much larger "BOB DYLAN" and the A-side title on two lines. My copy of the jukebox single has the first label design but appears to have the colour of the third variant, but this may just be a scanning deficiency.

A later version of this single had When You Gonna Wake Up? (album version) as the B-side, so is not a rarity. The UK version with the catalogue number CBS 7970 had When He Returns as the B-side. For both see US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1979.

"Tendras Que Servir A Alguien [Gotta Serve Somebody]"/"Trouble In Mind" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS 8134 (Spain), Dec 1979:
Only the A-side title is translated into Spanish. In Mexico it was translated as "Hay Que Servir A Alguien" (see above.)

There was also a white label promo single with an insert with the lyrics of Gotta Serve Somebody translated in Spanish on the reverse.
