Tempest (2012)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

CD 2: The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)

  1. If Not For You (alternate version, New Morning)
Dylan, Cash And The Nashville Cats: A New Music City (Jun 2015) has an alternate version of If Not For You with Lloyd Green on pedal steel - Dag Braathen says this is the same take as this, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 2 Jun 1970, but with the violin mixed down and steel guitar overdubbed (see 2015).

  13. If Dogs Run Free (alternate version, New Morning)
  14. New Morning (New Morning version with horn section overdubs) (Thanks to Peter Coulthard for reminding me that this track includes the intro with Bob saying "OK, here we go" from first releases of the 1970 album, but deleted from the US release after the first pressing. This was listed as R-0071 in 1970. As this version contains overdubs, R-0071 remains a rarity.)
  15. Went To See The Gypsy (alternate version, New Morning) (This is definitely the previously unreleased piano demo that appeared on the Apple iTunes Online Music Store (2004) - R-0683, see Online Performances (Other) - not only do they sound the same (this version in better quality), they are both 3:34.This means R-0683 ceases to be a rarity!)
  16. Belle Isle (without overdubs, Self Portrait)
  17. Time Passes Slowly #2 (alternate version, New Morning)
  18. When I Paint My Masterpiece (demo)

Picture from iTunes web-site (2004)

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information that iTunes are offering a multimedia download of The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 called Bob Dylan Bootlegs which includes music biographies, rare photos and interactive lyrics to accompany the 35 tracks of the 2CD set. This will be expanded to include the whole of the Bootleg Series albums.

CD3: Bob Dylan & The Band: Isle of Wight - August 31, 1969

Original Isle of Wight Festival 1969 handbill - front scan by Manuel García Jara
This is the original recording by Eliot Mazur and Glyn Johns, mixed by Chris Shaw at Strange Weather Studio. As described below, the 2013 remastered versions of the four recordings released in 1970 on CD4 are different from the same four tracks included on CD3. All the otherwise unavailable performances are listed in 2013.

The original handbill from the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival (10" x 5¼") has a picture of Bob from Nashville Skyline on the front with a list of the artists performing on both days, while the rear includes a form to use to order tickets. A two day ticket cost £2 10s (£2.50!).

Bootleg CD release (1998)
  1. She Belongs To Me - originally released on Self Portrait, 1970
  2. I Threw It All Away
  3. Maggie’s Farm
  4. Wild Mountain Thyme (traditional)
  5. It Ain't Me, Babe
  6. To Ramona
  7. Mr. Tambourine Man
  8. I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine
  9. Lay Lady Lay
  10. Highway 61 Revisited - also released on CD2 of The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), 2013
  11. One Too Many Mornings
  12. I Pity The Poor Immigrant
  13. Like A Rolling Stone - originally released on Self Portrait, 1970, and on the 1978 Japanese/Australian 3LP set Masterpieces (see 1978)
Fred Muller says: "The Isle of Wight version, as now released on Bootleg Series 10, is unedited. During the final chorus, there are two “like a rolling stone”s sung in unison, then the third has Bob preceding The Band’s refrain with “just like a rolling stone”, immediately followed by Bob calling “one more time ... “. This call and the third “like a rolling stone” were edited from the Self Portrait and Masterpieces versions, making them one refrain shorter. In fact, now that I know what to listen for, I can hear the edit on Self Portrait with headphones."
  14. I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight - also released on CD2 of The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), 2013
  15. Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn) - originally released on Self Portrait, 1970, and on the 1978 Japanese/Australian 3LP set Masterpieces (see 1978)
Fred Muller again says "Curiously, both the Self Portrait and Masterpieces tracks of the Isle of Wight Quinn the Eskimo fade early, excluding Levon’s final drum roll. Again, one wonders why, as including it wouldn’t have made an untidy fade such as catching stage chat or the start of the next song."
  16. Minstrel Boy - originally released on Self Portrait, 1970
Fred Muller again says "In the remixing, the feedback squeal halfway through the instrumental break of Minstrel Boy has been rendered almost inaudible."
  17. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

Shown above are the sleeves of two Spanish 7" singles using pictures from the Isle of Wight Festival with Bob is his very unexpected white suit, plus a sample of bootlegs of this show, none of which are in this quality! For the 1972 TMOQ bootleg LP of the show, see below. Thanks to Fred Muller for pointing out there is an error on page 36 of the book that contains the four discs:  the date of the IoW concert is given as 30 August 1969.  The correct date – a day later – appears on the previous page relating to tracks 7 and 8 of disc 2. Also on page 36 Fred finds it a bit annoying that the track numbers need to be advanced by one as the MC’s introduction is track 1, She Belongs to Me is track 2 and so on, totalling 18 tracks (17 songs).

CD4: Self Portrait remastered

It was originally reported that the remastered Self Portrait would be resequenced with the originally proposed running order, so that it would start with Alberta No. 1 (see the acetate set below), but this has not happened. The album was remastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ. Both Peter Coulthard and Éamonn Ó Catháin have found that on the remastered release there is a very annoying glitch which occurs between 47 and 48 seconds into Copper Kettle. The error on their copies seems to be a "skip" of maybe half a second at the point where Bob sings "...jugs a-filling...". From Peter's correspondence with Sterling Sound it appears the glitch is present on all copies of the remastered album. All copies of the deluxe limited edition with Self Portrait had completely sold out before mid Sep 2013. In mid Oct 2013 Sony Music announced they will be sending new copies of Another Self Portrait (1969-1971): The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 [Box set, Deluxe Edition] with a replacement CD 4 that don't contain the defect on Copper Kettle, and these have now arrived. The CD of Self Portrait in The Complete Album Collection Vol. One, Nov 2013, appears to be the same as the replacement CD4 here, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Of the remastered Self Portrait Isle of Wight songs, Fred Muller says: "Essentially, the remastered Self Portrait mimics my vinyl version in that the “one more time” edit in Like a Rolling Stone, the feedback squeal in Minstrel Boy and the fading of Levon’s drum roll at the end of The Mighty Quinn have been retained. Like a Rolling Stone running times: On the new Self Portrait the track duration is 5:21. On Isle of Wight the track is 5:25 but includes audience chatter and the count-in at the start; the performance itself starts 8 seconds later making it 5:17 in duration. The reason the edited version runs longer than the full version being that the pitch is different – the mastering was done at different tape speeds and these differences have been maintained."

The West Houston Street Acetates, 2014:

124 West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, New York City
Thanks to Jeff Gold, Bruce Mulle and several others for news of 149 Dylan acetates from the Nashville Skyline/Self Portrait/New Morning era that were found in a New York building in West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, that was once rented by Bob as a studio. These have been named "The West Houston Street Acetates" and contain many unreleased versions of Dylan songs from the period. They will be listed in full on the 2014 page when time permits. For full details, see here.

Self Portrait (1969-70):

Like A Rolling Stone - live, Isle of Wight Festival, 1969, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1099)
The version of Belle Isle from Self Portrait, here called "Bright Star Of Belle Isle", on the 45 RPM acetate shown sounds very close to the take from The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), having a different mix but the same spoken intro. However, immediately after the song Dylan clearly says: "Always wanted to have done that, it's one of my favourites... Let's just try this one".

The only double sided acetate in the batch, with eight tracks from the 26 Apr 1969 and 3 May 1969 Self Portrait recording sessions, Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN. Side 2 has unreleased versions of Folsom Prison Blues and Ring of Fire (both with full electric band.) All other songs are alternate mixes to the released versions.

Belle Isle from Self Portrait (alternate take), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1097)

Alberta #2 from Self Portrait (without overdubs), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1108)

Wigwam from Self Portrait (alternate mix), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1114)

Early Morning Rain from Self Portrait (without overdubs), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1116)

Woogie Boogie from Self Portrait (basic track with just piano and guitar) - scan by Arie de Reus (R-1228)

Ball & Stripe Rag (In Search Of Little Sadie) from Self Portrait (alternate take), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1005)

Self Portrait sessions Side 1, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

Self Portrait sessions Side 2, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

Self Portrait acetate Side 1, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

Self Portrait acetate Side 2, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

Self Portrait acetate Side 3, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

Self Portrait acetate Side 4, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

The set of four single-sided acetates contains the Self Portrait album with its final mixes, but with the tracks in a slightly different order from that released (four scans on right). There was a rumour (above) that the remastered Self Portrait with the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) would be in the original sequence, this may be it.

Tracklisting:

Side 1: Alberta #1; I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know; Days Of 49; Early Morning Rain; It Hurts Me Too (released on Side 4); Little Sadie #2.

Side 2: Let It Be Me; Little Sadie #1; Living The Blues; Woogie Boogie; Belle Isle; Like A Rolling Stone (live). (Living The Blues is track 3 instead of track 5, so Woogie Boogie and Belle Isle become tracks 4 and 5)

Side 3: Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go); Copper Kettle; Gotta Travel On; Blue Moon; The Boxer; The Mighty Quinn (live) (Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go) is track 1 instead of track 6, so the other tracks are 2-6).

Side 4: Take A Message To Mary; Minstrel Boy (live); She Belongs To Me (live); Wigwam; Alberta #2;
All The Tired Horses (released on Side 1).

New Morning (1970):

New Morning Side 1 (variant 1), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

Variant 1 of New Morning Side 1 shown has five songs: If Not For You, two mixes of Day Of The Locusts, Time Passes Slowly, and New Morning, Winterlude is missing. The label has Bob's handwriting choosing one mix of Day Of The Locusts and modifying titles. Apart from the rejected mix of Day Of The Locusts, these may be the released versions of the songs. See the 2014 page for full details.

New Morning Side 2 (variant 1), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

New Morning Side 1 (variant 2), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

New Morning Side 2 (variant 2), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

New Morning Side 1 (variant 3), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

New Morning Side 2 (variant 3), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

The Man In Me (alternate mix), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

If Not For You (alternate mix), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1098)

Father Of Night (released mix), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca

Time Passes Slowly (alternate unreleased take), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1113)

Variant 1 of New Morning Side 2 shown has six songs: New Morning; Sign On The Window; One More Weekend; The Man In Me; Three Angels; Father Of Night. This acetate has Bob Johnston's handwriting on the label and Bob Dylan's handwriting on the sleeve.  Sign on the Window has an extra 7 seconds on intro, The Man In Me has an extra 4 seconds on intro, Three Angels has an extra 2 seconds of organ at the beginning.  Similar mixes to released album. See the 2014 page for full details.

Variant 2 of New Morning (two discs) has an alternate sequence, but all tracks could be the released mixes.

Variant 3 of New Morning (again two discs) has only ten tracks in a different sequence, omitting Winterlude and Three Angels, but all tracks could be the released mixes.

Also shown are acetates with The Man In Me, If Not For You, Father of Night and Time Passes Slowly. I as yet have no information about The Man In Me, but If Not For You is the album track from New Morning with a different mix including strings. Father Of Night is the New Morning track, but Time Passes Slowly is an unreleased take very different from those released on New Morning and this album The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971). See the 2014 page for full details.

More out-takes from Self Portrait and New Morning are included on the controversial at the time out-takes album Dylan (1973), the very limited 2CD set 50th Anniversary Collection 1969 (see 2019) and the equally limited Dec 2020 3CD set 50th Anniversary Collection 1970, see 2020.

Thanks to "Isis" magazine, Fred Muller, Evan Marshall, Peter Coulthard and Éamonn Ó Catháin for information.

Each record of this 3LP set comes in an outer card sleeve and an inner paper sleeve, and the 3LPs are housed inside a thick card slipcase, which also holds the 12" booklet. Although the European 3LP set below uses the US slipcase (with a sticker), the outer and inner sleeves of the LPs, the LPs themselves, the CD sleeves and the CDs themselves of the US release are different from those of the EU release.

The US booklet looks the same as that of the EU release.

The flyer for The Complete Album Collection Volume One with the US 3LP set is exactly the same as the flyer for the US 2CD set below. It has the catalogue number as "88883734872 I1" instead of just "88883734872".

Each side has stamped “STERLING” and handwritten “RKS” in the vinyl opposite to the matrix numbers. This means the records were mastered at Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ, by their senior engineer Ryan K. Smith, as were the records of the Side Tracks 3LP set, Nov 2013, see 2013, and the records of The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The Basement Tapes Raw, 2014.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)" - limited edition stereo 180gm vinyl 3LP release, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883 73489 1 (Europe), 27 Aug 2013:

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883 73489 1 (Europe) - front of slipcase with sticker (my copy)

My European copy uses the American slipcase as above with a European sticker (from Sony Poland!) on the shrink-wrap on the rear of the slipcase covering up the US copyright information. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for noticing that it is actually made of thinner card than the US version. The 56 page 12" x 12" booklet was also printed in the USA, scans above. However the discs, both vinyl and CD, were made in the EU, as well as their outer and inner sleeves, reproductions of 1970s worldwide CBS sleeves. The CDs also have catalogue numbers CKA-373488 and CKB-373488 (same as the CDs from the US 3LP set).

The heavy card slipcase measures 8¼" x 8¼" (same size as that for the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006) and contains two square hardcover books, one including the four discs, and one called "Time Passes Slowly" with photographs. On the rear of the slipcase Self Portrait (CD4) is wrongly listed as being from 1969, not 1970. Gerd Rundel has a copy where the rear slipcase is misprinted with blue colouring on the right-hand side.

The four CDs are housed in pockets inside a fold-out disc section with the information booklet bound into the front half of the first book. The pockets are reproduction of contemporary CBS singles sleeves. The CDs have US copyright information and catalogue numbers CKA-373488, CKB-373488, CKC-373488 and CKD-373488. Like the 3LP set above, the set also includes a flyer for the Complete Album Collection boxed set, due for release in "Fall" 2013. This set contains rarities, so is listed in 2013.

Thanks to Michael V Palinkas for spotting the mistake in the deluxe edition book on the page describing the Isle of Wight concert disc, giving the recording date wrongly as 30 Aug 1969. The concert was recorded on 31 Aug 1969. Éamonn Ó Catháin also points out that on a player that shows CD TEXT, Wild Mountain Thyme on CD3 is wrongly listed as "Wild Mountain Time". This must have been a Friday afternoon production!

Ironically, the design of the remastered Self Portrait CD is not the same as that of the record labels of the first release of the album in 1970, but of the later release from 1971 onwards! The first release record labels used the 1960s "two eye" "STEREO"/"360 SOUND" style.

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883 73488 2 (Europe) - front of slipcase with sticker (my copy)

Like the vinyl release above, my European copy uses the American slipcase with a European sticker on the shrink-wrap on the rear of the slipcase covering up the US copyright information. However the CDs were made in the EU. The books were also made in the USA, so are the same as those listed above.

Unlike the CDs included with the 3LP sets, CDs 1 and 2 both have the same catalogue number, 88883 73487 2. CDs 3 and 4 have catalogue numbers 88883 734882-3 and 734882-4. The CDs also have the US catalogue numbers CKA-373488, CKB-373488, CKC-373488 and CKD-373488.

Thanks to Peter Coulthard for the detail scan of his replacement CD4 disc without the glitch on Copper Kettle mentioned above. This is identical to the European CD shown apart from the central matrix numbers. On my copy (with the glitch) the IFPI number is "0790" and the matrix number ends in "...4882-4 22". On Peter's replacement copy the IFPI number is "0763" and the matrix number ends in "...4882-4-1 21". Steve P has also received a replacement disc which is the US version. On Steve's replacement copy the IFPI number is "L328" and the matrix number is "DIDX-1031395 1". The American disc has catalogue number "CKD-373488" but not the European number "88883 73488 2-4".

Sony Music SICP 30331-4 (Japan) - front of outer sleeve, scan by Sonny Boy McFitzson
The Sony Music Japan 4CD Limited Deluxe Edition comes in an outer card sleeve with no top and bottom, not a slipcase. The cardboard sleeve and the two books are made in the USA. The price is ¥19,800 (¥18,857 plus sales tax), the release date "13-9-18" (18 Sep 2013), the US release date "13-8-27" (27 Sep 2013) and the withdrawal date is "14-3-17" (17 Mar 2014). As only 3,000 Japanese sets have been manufactured, this date is rather unnecessary! The CDs are made in Japan and protected in clear plastic shaped sleeves. They are in the new "Blu-spec CD2" high quality audio format currently exclusive to Japan, and the set also contained a double-sided flyer advertising the Blu-spec CD2 format.

CBS/Sony SONP 50318 (Japan) - Side 1 scan by Manuel García Jara (1970 release)
All the CDs have "SONY MUSIC" instead of Columbia, and CD4, the remastered Self Portrait, is purple instead of red (it bears no resemblance to the design of the original 1970 CBS/Sony record labels, or even to the disc of the only Japanese CD release, which was green). Sonny Boy McFitzson says the Japanese Blu-spec CD2 release of Self Portrait does not have the glitch on Copper Kettle on the US and European regular CDs. The Japanese 44-page booklet has translations of the English text by Greil Marcus and Michael Simmons, plus a summarised chronicle by Heckel Sugano from 29 Jul 1966 (the motorcycle accident) to 20 Dec 1970 (release of The Concert for Bangla Desh) together with Japanese lyrics translations by Goro Nakagawa the folksinger. It says on the last page "English lyrics are omitted by the artist's intension" which is apparently untrue, they didn't have time to pick up the words of the unreleased songs! The release date was apparently postponed from 27 Aug 2013 to 18 Sep 2013 because the slipcase and books couldn't be delivered from the USA in time.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and scans. Thanks to Derek Barker for information that Amazon UK are selling imported copies of this Japanese set for the astounding price of £239.99! The obi price of ¥19,800 equates to £135.32 or $200.12, but copies can be bought online from CDJapan for the slightly discounted price of £122.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)" - standard 2CD release, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883 73487 2 (Europe), 26 Aug 2013:

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883 73487 2 (Europe) - front of slipcase with sticker (my copy)
Unlike the limited deluxe and vinyl editions, my copy of this standard edition was made entirely in the EU. It comes in a card slipcase holding the 2D set in a slimline jewel case and a 60-page softcover booklet. The front insert of the 2CD set is a single folded sheet. Like CDs 1 and 2 included with the 4CD sets above, both CDs have the same catalogue number, 88883 73487 2, as well as CKA-373488 and CKB-373488. The reverse of the rear insert reproduces a record label from Taiwan (Republic of China), an official release by the World Record Co. Ltd. under license from CBS. Like the 3LP and 4CD sets above, this 2CD set also includes a flyer for the Complete Album Collection boxed set, released in Nov 2013. This set contains rarities, so is listed in 2013.
