The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 - [Rare And Unreleased] 1961-1991
|
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. This page is still incomplete - more entries required. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the
dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

US release (3CDs/cassettes), Columbia/Legacy C3K 47382 (CD), C3T 47382 (MC), 26 Mar 1991 The original UK 3CD 12" boxed set contained a rarity, R-0212, an edit of Series of Dreams (5:37) that has now been replaced on the current CD reissue by the full version (5:52). For this release, other rarities and promo releases see 1991. A 5LP vinyl version was released in Europe only. The 1991 European cassette and vinyl releases had the full version of Series Of Dreams. |
Tracks known to have been short-listed for this album (enough to have expanded it to a fourth CD) are:
Lonesome Whistle Blues (Hank Williams) - Freewheelin' out-take, also found on a 1962 Columbia acetate which surfaced in 1980
Long Ago, Far Away - Witmark demo
Farewell - Witmark demo
John Brown - Witmark demo
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue - alternate take
Medicine Sunday - out-take from Blonde
On Blonde
This may actually be an instrumental out-take commonly called
Keep It With
Mine, although it's not the same song as I'll Keep It With Mine.
Medicine Sunday could
also be the 57 second incomplete take of an early version of Temporary Like
Achilles with Bob backed by The Band, which starts "The midnight train moves all
down the track ... ". It ends with a breakdown after four lines ending with "
... Honey, but you're so hard". This was included on the Sony/Graphix Zone
Highway 61 Interactive
CD-ROM, see 1995.
She's Your Lover Now - piano version, out-take from Blonde On Blonde
Silent Weekend - out-take from The Basement Tapes with The Band
It Ain't Me, Babe - live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975, from Renaldo And Clara (once listed here as R-0137, this performance is now officially released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Live 1975, see Released Rarities)
Ain't No Man Righteous, No Not One - out-take from Slow Train Coming
Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody - live from 1979
Fur Slippers - out-take from Shot of Love
Shot Of Love - live from Avignon, France, 1981
Let's hope all these will appear on future releases of The Bootleg Series!

This really is a boxed set! It comes in a blue wooden box with gold
fittings and with a special certificate (shown on right). The box
was made in the UK. Thanks to Carl Torstensson for pointing out that it does
contain the booklet that is found in the LP releases, even though it can't
be seen in these photos This item is very rare and boxes which become available command a high price! This set not only has an edited version of Series Of Dreams at 5:37 but also included a promo CD single 5 Tracks From The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, Columbia/Legacy SAMPCD 1476, see 1991. Europe. This set has an edited version of Series Of Dreams at 5:37, see 1991. Thanks to Peter van der Kerk for information and to Hans Seegers and Gerd Rundel for further information and scans. |

Stuart Moore's copy bought in Australia has the US catalogue number with the discs the same as the 1997 US release. Thanks to Roberto Bergadano for information about the release of this set from the Italian magazine "L'Espresso" in 2007. The most significant difference is that the booklet is translated into Italian, copyrighted "Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso 2007". They are also selling an edition of the DVD set No Direction Home, although I have no information as yet about any differences between that and the UK edition.
