This promo single has
stereo and mono versions of the same song. There are three major variants,
illustrated here by the
mono sides. Two of the variants have differences between copies, also shown. R-0099-5 A Fool Such As I (Bill Trader) - stereo album version from 1973 Dylan album R-0099M A Fool Such As I (Bill Trader) - mono version not available on 1973 Dylan album, see 1973 (this is presumably a mono reduction of the stereo source) These releases wrongly credit A Fool Such As I to Buford Abner. See the note about writer credits in 1973 and here. For the US commercial singles, see below. Label variants are:
The publishing details are of course incorrect! Also, the type face
used is different on the second and third variants. |

"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" singles, Columbia 4-45982 (USA), 19 Nov 1973/Columbia 4-45982 (Canada), 14 Feb 1974:
There are three variants of the US commercial single. To the right of the centre hole "45 RPM" is on the bottom line on the first variant and on the top line on the second and third variants. The A-sides of the first two variants have A Fool Such As I wrongly credited to "B. Abner", the third has been corrected and has the song correctly credited to "B. Trader". Also shown is a copy of the second variant that has "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" stamped on the A-side, a second second variant copy with a promo sticker on the A-side, and two jukebox strips, one using a pink "HIT POP" strip, the other white.

"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" singles,
CBS S 2006 (West Germany)/CBS 2006 (NL), 11 Jan 1974; CBS 2006 (Sweden), 1974:
The Dutch and West German singles were released on 11 Jan 1974, the UK
single below on 25 Jan 1974 - I don't have precise dates for the other European singles. The success of this single in mainland Europe is the reason why the
short-lived CD release of the 1973 Dylan album (see 1973)
was retitled (A Fool Such As I) in those countries!

R-0099-7 A Fool Such As I (Bill Trader) - Self Portrait out-take recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 26 Apr 1969 R-0097-5 Lily Of The West (Traditional, arranged E. Davies/J. Peterson) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 3 Jun 1970 For the generic "CBS-Blitzinformation [CBS Lightning Information]" rear sleeve of the West German promo single, see 7" Single Sleeves. The West German singles had R-0099 correctly credited to "B. Trader". However, the Dutch single had it wrongly credited to "B. Abner". |

Hans Seegers and Lars M. Banke inform me that for the Swedish release of CBS 2006, the record was made in Sweden but used the Dutch sleeve shown here. This record was unique in that R-0097 was the A-side! Again R-0099 was wrongly credited to "B. Abner". I understood previously that all CBS Scandinavian singles were pressed at the PolyGram plant in Oslo, Norway, and distributed throughout Scandinavia in locally printed sleeves. However, three Dylan 1970s singles including this one were pressed in Sweden at a different plant, and all have "MADE IN SWEDEN" at the bottom of the labels.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - acetate and promo/commercial stereo 7" singles, S CBS 2006 (UK), 25 Jan 1974:
S CBS 2006 was probably the last Dylan single to use the early 1970s "CBS THE MUSIC PEOPLE" sleeve as shown. The Music People was the title of a 1972 3LP compilation of CBS artists which included a rarity from Bob, see 1972.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Harlan Wolfe for information and scans.
"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" singles, CBS Serie Gemini 2006 (France), 1974:
"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS Sugar 2006 (Italy), 1974:
"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" single, CBS 2006 (Spain), 1974:
The Spanish single CBS 2006 has orange CBS labels and the titles translated as "Tan Loco Como Yo" and "Lily Del Oeste" - compare these with the Mexican translations below! R-0099 was wrongly credited to "B. Abner", as it was on the Italian single. The single was made in Spain by COFASA S.A. for CBS.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" single, CBS 2006 (Portugal), 1974:
"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" single, CBS 301415 (Greece), 1974:
"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" single, Suzy Records/CBS 2006 (Yugoslavia), 1974:
The Yugoslav single was released by Suzy Records on behalf of CBS. R-0099 was again wrongly credited to "B. Abner".
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Francisco Lima for information and scans.

R-0099-8 A Fool Such As I (Bill Trader) - Self Portrait out-take recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 26 Apr 1969 R-0097-6 Lily Of The West (Traditional, arranged E. Davies/J. Peterson) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 3 Jun 1970 The Japanese single has a front picture by artist Nov Yabuki that previously appeared on a poster in the 1973 boxed set Eleven Years In The Life Of Bob Dylan, see 1973. The rear sleeve has sleeve notes in Japanese, and the lyrics of the A-side in English and Japanese. R-0099 is correctly credited to "B. Trader". This single was released as a promo with white CBS/Sony labels and commercially with orange CBS/Sony labels. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

"A Fool Such As I"/"Lily Of The West" - stereo 7" singles, CBS BA-222032 (Australia); CBS BA 461497 (New Zealand), Jan 1974:
R-0099-9 A Fool Such As
I (Bill Trader) - Self Portrait
out-take recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 26 Apr 1969
This was wrongly attributed to Buford Abner on both singles.
R-0097-7 Lily Of The
West (Traditional, arranged E. Davies/J. Peterson)
- New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York,
3 Jun 1970
The Australian single B-side spells the title correctly, but on the New
Zealand single "Lily" was misspelled "Lilly" on the B-side as on the
UK single shown above.
Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the New Zealand release, CBS BA 461497. Thanks to Hans Seegers and Ger Hemel for further information and scans.
"Un Tonto Como Yo [A Fool Such As I]"/"Flor Del Oeste [Lily Of The West]" - stereo 7" single, CBS 7238 (Mexico), 1974:
The 1974 Mexican single CBS 7238 has orange CBS labels and the titles translated as "Un Tonto Como Yo" and "Flor Del Oeste". R-0099 is incorrectly credited to "B. Abner". As far as I know it came in a regular sleeve. The promo copy of this single shown is the commercial copy with a promo stamp on the B-side with text "DISCO PROMOCIONAL PROHIBIDA SU VENTA [PROMOTIONAL RECORD SALE PROHIBITED]. "Isis" 201 has details of a white label promo copy in a unique picture sleeve that is alleged by an eBay seller to have been given away to listeners to the Mexican radio station Radio Capital 830 XEITE-AM in 1974. I am convinced both the record and the sleeve are fakes!
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"Knockin' On Heaven's Door"/"A Fool Such As I" - stereo 7" singles in "Hall Of Fame" series, Columbia 4-33259(USA), 1974; Columbia 13-33259 (USA), 1975 (three variants), re-released 1987, 1993 and 1997:
Scans of Columbia 4-33259 required! This single was previously incorrectly listed as mono, but both sides are stereo. Thanks to Mike Anderson for pointing this out.
Columbia 13-33259 (USA), 1975 (three variants):
R-0099-11 A Fool Such As
I (Bill Trader) - Self Portrait
out-take recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 26 Apr 1969,
from deleted
1973 Dylan album
The B-side label correctly credits the song to Bill Trader.
The song length here is given incorrectly as 3:37 when it is really 2:38. 3:37 is
actually the length of Lily Of The West,
the B-side of the single shown above!
This single was re-released as Columbia 13-33259 in 1975, with three variants (all shown above):
On the variants without the sunburst, the original release date ("July 31, 1973") is printed slightly lower below the white line.
