This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Original US stereo LP, Columbia CS 8905, Feb 1964, CD released Jan 1989

The front photograph was taken by Barry Feinstein, uncredited. It's a pastiche of a Woody Guthrie photo. Barry Feinstein sadly died on 20 Oct 2011, for more pictures of Bob by Barry, see .

Original CD Releases

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" - CD release, Columbia CK 8905 (USA), Jan 1989:

Columbia CK 8905 (USA) - front of "long box", scan by Hans Seegers

This release was the standard one on sale in the USA and Canada until 2005. The first CD release of the album in the USA came in the "long box" shown, in the "Collector's Choice" series. The front insert is a 12-page booklet which includes the "11 Outlined Epitaphs".

Paul Shenton has noticed that on the CD "Carroll" in The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll is misspelled "Carrol".

Wil Gielen has a copy of the US release imported into Japan with an obi from the Shinseido record store chain (see below).

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Paul Shenton for information and scans.

TimesUSJpnExportFrontObi.jpg (34989 bytes)
Columbia CK 8905 (USA for Japan) - front with obi and sticker, scan by Wil Gielen
Wil Gielen has an early 1990s copy of the US release imported into Japan with an obi from the Shinseido record store chain. The obi was added by the store to import US copies (which were much cheaper than Japanese releases) to provide buyers with information in Japanese. The CD is slightly different from the US copy owned by Hans Seegers in that the "DIDP" number underneath the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is missing. The "DIDP" number (Digital Identification Popular) is a code used by Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) on CDs pressed in Terre Haute, IN, or one of their other CD plants in the USA, from 1983 onwards (Classical CDs had "DIDC"). It's not present on this CD, which probably means that it was either manufactured by Sony in Japan, or at another US CD pressing plant under contract from Columbia. The price on the obi of ¥1,408 has Japanese characters meaning "excluding tax", which means it was imported into Japan after the introduction of sales tax in 1989.

Thanks to Wil Gielen for information and scans.

Columbia WCK 8905 (Canada) - front scan by Jack from Canada

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" - CD release, CBS 467175 2 (Australia), 1980s; Columbia/CBS/Epic 467175 2 (Australia), 1997:

CBS 467175 2 (Australia) - front insert with "Select" logo, scan by Stuart Moore (1980s release)
The front insert of both releases is a single card. The CBS release is in the Select" series and the CD itself was manufactured in Australia for CBS by Disctronics. The front insert has the "Select" logo at bottom left and the rear insert has the "Select" logo at top left.

Surprisingly, the 1997 release was also sold in Europe at the time, in an Austrian manufactured version. The Australian release used paper for the inserts, while the Austrian release used light card. The CD inserts of the 1997 release still have "CBS" while the CD itself has "Columbia"! The CD of Stuart Moore's copy differs from that of Hans Seegers in the arrangement of the four lines of red text to the right of the centre hole. Hans' CD has "MANUFACTURED IN" on the first line while Stuart's has just "MANUFACTURED", with corresponding changes on the second and third lines.

Columbia 467175 2 (Australia) - CD scan by Stuart Moore (second 1990s release)

Columbia 467175 2 (Australia) - detail of CD, scan by Stuart Moore (second 1990s release)

Tom Willem's copy comes with the same CBS front and rear inserts as Hans Seegers first 1990s Columbia copy, but the CD was released on the Epic label. The blue text to the right of the centre hole on this CD is the same as the red text on Hans Seegers' CD, with "MANUFACTURED IN" on the first line.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Stuart Moore and Tom Willems for information and scans.

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" - CD releases, CBS COL 32021 (Europe), 1989; Columbia COL 32021 (Europe), 1997, re-released 2000:

Columbia COL 32021 (Europe) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (2000 release)

The front insert of the 1989 CBS release is a 24-page booklet which includes the "11 Outlined Epitaphs" and a "NICE PRICE" catalogue.

Columbia COL 32021 (Europe) - CD scan by Hans Seegers (1997 and 2000 releases)

Confusingly, the Australian release CBS 467175 2 (see below) was also on sale in Europe in a version with card rather than paper inserts. It used the Columbia COL 32021 CD.

The 1997 Columbia release restores the old 1960s "STEREO"/arrows logo. The front insert of the Columbia release is a 16-page booklet which includes the "11 Outlined Epitaphs" but omits the "NICE PRICE" catalogue. The CD has a clear tray showing the reverse of the rear insert which is black with just the album title and "BOB DYLAN" as on the front but a negative image. Manuel García Jara has a copy from around 2000 with the same front insert booklet and CD but with a completely different rear insert.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

Columbia CDCOL 5005 (South Africa) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (both releases)
The 2008 release is still the standard one on sale in South Africa today. The front insert is a 12-page booklet which includes the "11 Outlined Epitaphs".

Both releases have exactly the same inserts with catalogue number "CDCOL 5005 S" and both CDs are dated 1996. The 1996 CD has "Made in R.S.A. (Republic of South Africa)" and the 2008 CD now has the Sony BMG logo as well as the RISA logo (Recording Industry of South Africa). The 2008 CD catalogue number is just "CDCOL 5005".

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" - CD release, Ediciones del Prado Canta Autores CA049/ CBS/Sony COL CD 32021 (Spain), 1997:
After the rest of CBS changed its name to "Columbia" in 1991, CBS Spain became "CBS/Sony" (same as the Japanese company) because RCA still owned the rights to the "Columbia" name in Spain.

TimesSpCantaFront.JPG (65630 bytes)
CBS/Sony COL CD 32021 (Spain) - front insert picture by Pachi Becerril
This Spanish special release is part of a series called "Canta Autores [Songwriters Sing]" from Ediciones del Prado, Spain - there is also a Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits in the same series.

The front and rear inserts have catalogue number COL CD 32021 (same as the then current European CD) while the CD itself has a special "Canta Autores" design with catalogue number CA049.

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" - remastered CD-R promo release, Sony BMG (no catalogue number) (Austria for Europe), Jun 2005:

Plain paper front insert
Legacy Recordings have been using the slogan "Not Just Reissued... Reimagined" for some time, but this album and Bob Dylan, released at the same time, are described as "reasserted" - whatever that means! The sound is certainly very good indeed.

This promo CD-R release comes in a clear plastic wallet with a plain paper insert showing the album title and track list only, plus the Sony BMG logo.

The CD-R is plain with only the album title and number of tracks.

Thanks to the staff at Badlands, Cheltenham, UK, for these promos.

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" - remastered CD release, Columbia CK 94240 (USA/Canada), Columbia 519892 2 (Austria for Europe), 21 Jun 2005/Columbia 519892 2 (Argentina), 2005:

Columbia CK 94240 (USA) - front scan by Hans Seegers (sealed copy)
This release is a stereo CD only, not a hybrid SA-CD. The front picture crop is similar to that of the original US mono sleeve in that it cuts off most of Bob's hair and just shows the second button on his shirt.

There are three previously unpublished contemporary photos on the back page of the front insert booklet and the rear insert. The 12-page stapled booklet reproduces the original sleeve notes with all the "11 Outlined Epitaphs" and features two more pictures. The CD reproduces the original 1964 US Columbia label design but without the "STEREO/360º SOUND" logos.

Thanks to Michio Kinoshita for information about these albums. Thanks to Keith Schweiger for scans of a promo copy of MHCP 836. It has a numbered promo sticker on the rear of the card sleeve, a purple promo insert in Japanese and the text "SAMPLE LOANED" in the clear centre of the CD itself.

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK3" plus "DISC 3". The CDs are different in detail, the US The Times They Are A-Changin' CD has catalogue number "88691924312D3", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-03". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The first part, called Dylan '60s, will be released by Sony Music Japan on 26 Mar 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs, which are numbered SICP 30471 to SICP 30481 (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, not included in the US and European sets, is included here as SICP 30479). Side Tracks, to be released at the same time, is SICP 30519-20. All the sleeves have orange top obis similar to the 2004 Japanese release in card sleeves. The 2013 remastered The Times They Are A-Changin' was SICP 30473 - more details will be added when available (this album was not one of those released in Blu-spec CD2 format in 2013).
