Saved

The original and US replacement sleeves for Bob's 1980 album Saved - both pictures are pastel drawings by Tony Wright. The "secular" US sleeve from 1985 (originally on the album's inner sleeve), was drawn from a photograph of Bob on stage in Montreal, Canada, Apr 1980. Salvado is the Argentinean release with the title translated into Spanish.

Slow Train Coming
(1979)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Original sleeve
Original US stereo LP, Columbia FC 36553, 19 Jun 1980.

This album was produced by Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett and recorded at Muscle Shoals Studio, Sheffield, AL. Thanks to Steven Fant for the photo from Jul 2009. The building is now called Cypress Moon Studios. Slow Train Coming (1979) was also recorded here.

The two pastel drawings are by Tony Wright and the two photographs are by Arthur Rosato.

The US album was given a new front based on the design from the inner sleeve in 1985, but the latest CD release as part of The Complete Album Collection Vol. One in 2014 has the original sleeve. The picture used from 1985 as the US front sleeve was drawn by Tony Wright from a photograph of Bob on stage in Montreal, Canada, Apr 1980.

There are several different variants of record label!

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (first white label promo)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (first white label promo - track 1 on three lines)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (first white label promo - "All published by Special Rider Music (ASCAP)" at bottom)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (first white label promo)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 2, scan by Gerd Rundel (first white label promo- narrow line spacing, "All published by Special Rider Music (ASCAP)")

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - Side 1 scan by Stuart Moore (first commercial release)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Stuart Moore (first commercial release - same as first white label promo)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Stuart Moore (first commercial release - same as first white label promo)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Stuart Moore (first commercial release)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 2, scan by Stuart Moore (first commercial release - same as first white label promo)

Gerd Rundel's first white label promo copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36553-1B, Side 2 - PBL-36553-1B. Stuart Moore's commercial copy has red labels with exactly the same text layout. On the first promo and commercial release Side 1 the first song title is on three lines, and includes a credit to "Fort Knox Music Co." The song titles on Side 2 are narrowly spaced. Both sides have "All published by Special Rider Music (ASCAP)..." as the bottom text line.

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (second white label promo)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (second white label promo - track 1 on two lines, also has "ASCAP" on every Dylan song line)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (second white label promo - "Special Rider Music (ASCAP)" at bottom as well as "ASCAP" on every Dylan song line)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (second white label promo)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 2, scan by Gerd Rundel (second white label promo - wide line spacing, "All published by Special Rider Music (ASCAP)" still present)

Side 1 of Gerd Rundel's second white label promo copy has the first song title on two lines. "(BMI)" or "(ASCAP)" is printed after every song credit on Side 1, and the bottom text line is just "Special Rider Music (ASCAP)..." ("All published by" is missing.) Side 2 has the same text as the first promo release Side 2, but the song titles are now widely spaced. ("All published by" is still present.) The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36553-1D, Side 2 - PBL-36553-1C. The record of Phill Townsend's white label copy (not shown) has matrix numbers: Side1 - PAL 36553-1C, Side2 - PBL 36553-1C.

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - Side 1 scan by Dag Braathen (second commercial release - copy bought in Spain)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Dag Braathen (second commercial release - copy bought in Spain, track 1 on one line, no publisher credits)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Dag Braathen (second commercial release - copy bought in Spain, just "Special Rider Music (ASCAP)")

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Dag Braathen (second commercial release - copy bought in Spain)

Columbia FC 36553 (USA) - detail of Side 2, scan by Dag Braathen (second commercial release - copy bought in Spain, wide line spacing, just "Special Rider Music (ASCAP)" as Side 1)

Thanks to Dag Braathen for scans of the record labels of a copy bought in Spain - it has the US outer and inner sleeves as shown and the double-sided Spanish lyrics insert from the Spanish release (see below). The record labels are different from those of Gerd Rundel's and Stuart Moore's first release promo and commercial copies, and also different from Gerd Rundel's second release promo copy - on Side 1 the track 1 song title is now on one line instead of two or three, and the publisher credit is now just "Special Rider Music (ASCAP)..." as Gerd's second promo. The Side 2 label text layout is the same as on Gerd's second promo, except that the publisher credit is now just "Special Rider Music (ASCAP)" like Side 1. ("All published by" is missing on both sides.) William Shetler has a copy of FC 36553 bought at a US Air Force airbase in Spain on 25 Aug 1980. It has the same outer and inner sleeves and record labels as Dag Braathen's copy, although it doesn't have the Spanish insert and the front sleeve does not have a sticker. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 36553-1G, Side 2 - PBL 36553-1C.

Columbia PC 36553 (USA), 1985:

Columbia PC 36553 (USA) - front with "THE NICE PRICE" sticker and hole punched, scan by Gerd Rundel (1985 release)

These copies of "PC 36553" shown date from 1985, as they have the replacement front sleeve. There are "THE NICE PRICE" stickers on the front sleeves. Gerd's copy is a promo because it has a hole punched through the sleeve preventing the barcode from being scanned. It has the same printed inner sleeve as the first release. The record label design is the same as Dag Braathen's copy above. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36553 G2C, Side 2 - BL 36553-G2D.

Columbia PC 36553 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (1985 release)

Steven Fant's copy is still in the shrink wrap and was bought in Denmark - see other export copies below. It has a second sticker with "USA IMPORT" at front top left.

Thanks to Robert Kornovich, Stuart Moore, Gerd Rundel, Phill Townsend, William Shetler and Steven Fant for information and pictures.

"Saved" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia FC 36553 (USA for export to Denmark), 1980:

Columbia FC 36553 (USA for export) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (both copies exported to Denmark)

Lars M. Banke has two Columbia US copies bought in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the Columbia logos on the rear sleeve and spine obscured with black marker pen. The record labels of the first copy have orange ring-shaped stickers covering the Columbia logos. On the record labels of the second copy the Columbia logos have been crudely obscured with black marker pen. The records of both copies have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - PBL-36553-2H, Side 2 - PBL-36553-2B.

Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

"Saved" - stereo vinyl LP release, Columbia FC 36553 (USA for export to Sweden), 1980:

Columbia FC 36553 (USA for export) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (copy exported to Sweden)

Lars M. Banke has a third Columbia US copy bought in Stockholm, Sweden, with the Columbia logo and two instances of "Columbia" on the rear sleeve obscured with black marker pen. The ring of Columbia logos on the record labels is again covered, but not this time by stickers, this time the ring looks as if it has been painted on to the labels with black ink. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PBL (handwritten) -36553-2H (stamped), Side 2 - PBL-36553-2B (stamped). On side 1 an incorrect “P BL” has been obscured and replaced by a handwritten correct “PAL”.

Columbia FC 36553 (USA for export) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (second copy exported to Sweden)

Lars M. Banke has a fourth Columbia US export copy bought in Sweden which is different from the one above because it has white ring-shaped stickers on the record labels. “Columbia” is obscured with black marker pen on the spine and the rear sleeve. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-36553 - 1A – 2HZ, Side 2 - BL-36553 - 1A – 2HZ.

"Saved" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge release, Columbia FCA 36553 (USA), 1980:

Columbia FCA 36553 (USA) - front of slipcase, scan by T. J. Jenkins
This 8-track release comes in a slipcase with a cut-out in the rear to show the tape contents. For some reason a second occurrence of the title track is split between Programs 3 and 4! Because the two parts of the spilt track are rarities, this release is also listed in 1980.

"Saved" - stereo cassette releases, Columbia FCT 36553 (USA), 1980; Columbia PCT 36553 (USA), mid 1980s:

Columbia FCT 36553 (USA) - cassette Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (1980 release)

The outside of the 1980 cassette insert has a barcode. The inside has details of other contemporary Columbia cassette releases including Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II and Bob Dylan At Budokan. The 1980 cassette release has a light grey cassette with black text printed directly on it, there are no paper labels.

Columbia PCT 36553 (USA) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid 1980s release)
The mid 1980s release has a new catalogue number, Columbia PCT 36553, and a smaller insert that is blank on the inside, also with a barcode. Apart from the catalogue number, the cassette looks the same as the 1980 cassette.

"Saved" - stereo vinyl LP release, Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada), 19 Jun 1980 (two variants):

Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (both variants)

This release is essentially the same as the US release with the same inner sleeve as above. "MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD" is printed on both the rear sleeve and the record labels. The sleeve spine also has "LITHO IN CANADA". There are two rear sleeve variants, one with a barcode and one without. The two copyright lines at the bottom of the rear sleeve are different. On the variant without the barcode the copyright text is much smaller, and includes extra text "WARNING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED...". The second line on this copy is longer than the first, on the variant with the barcode both copyright lines are about the same length.

Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (variant without barcode)

Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (variant with barcode)

Barcodes were introduced in North America in the late 1970s, and both the US and Canadian releases of Slow Train Coming have barcodes on the rear sleeve. Although the use of barcodes was consistent in the USA, it was not in Canada, and neither 1981's Shot Of Love nor 1984's Real Live had rear sleeve barcodes on first release, although 1983's Infidels did. This means that the Canadian release of Saved without the rear sleeve barcode is not necessarily the first release.

The record is the same for both variants and has red Columbia labels with the Columbia logos in a ring round the circumference. The record of the copy shown in the sleeve with the barcode has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-36553-1A-2HZ:, Side 2 - BL-36553-1A-2HZ:.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel, Lars M. Banke and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Saved" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada for export to Sweden and Finland), 1980:

Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada for export) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (first copy exported to Sweden)

Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada for Sweden) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke ("Columbia" scratched out, first copy exported to Sweden)

The first Canadian export copy of Saved bought in Sweden has black ring-shaped stickers on the record labels. On the rear sleeve "Columbia" is obscured rather clumsily with a sharp knife and not covered with a sticker or obscured with a black pen. This rear sleeve does not have a barcode as Manuel's copy above.

Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada for export) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (second copy exported to Sweden, gold stickers over "Columbia", sticker at bottom right missing)

The second Canadian export copy of Saved bought in Sweden has gold ring-shaped stickers on the record labels. There are square gold stickers on the spine and on the rear sleeve obscuring "Columbia". This rear sleeve now has a barcode as Gerd Rundel's copy above. At rear bottom right it looks as if another sticker obscuring the "Columbia" logo has either fallen off or been removed. The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 36563 1A-2 HZ, Side 2 - BL 36563 1A-2 HZ.

Columbia XFC 36553 (Canada for export) - front with gold sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (copy exported to Finland)

The Canadian export copy of Saved bought in Finland has a gold sticker over the spine showing on front and rear obscuring "Columbia". It also has a second gold sticker on the rear sleeve obscuring the Columbia logo, a silver sticker at rear bottom centre obscuring the text "Columbia", and gold ring-shaped stickers on the record labels. The rear sleeve again has a barcode as Gerd Rundel's copy above. The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 36563 A 2HZ:, Side 2 - BL 36563 A 2HZ:.

This Canadian copy of Columbia XFC 36553) was probably bought in Sweden. It has "Columbia" obscured on the rear sleeve and white ring-shaped stickers on the record labels. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 36553 1A 2HZ, Side 2 - BL 36553 1A 2HZ.

CBS 86113/S CBS 86113 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (both releases)

The first release of the album had a white on black front sticker (shown on right). The UK CD release of this album still has this original front design (see below). The record has orange/yellow labels with catalogue number "S CBS 86113" and "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom. The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-CBS-86113-A-1, Side 2 - S-CBS-86113-B-3. The inner sleeve is uniquely shaped. On my copy's record label, track 1 of Side 1, A Satisfied Mind, was misspelled "A Satisified Mind". This was corrected on later pressings.

Simon Blokker has a UK first release copy with a gold CBS Records UK promo stamp on the rear sleeve at top right. The record labels are the same as my copy with the "A Satisified Mind" mistake on Side 1. Lars M. Banke has a UK first release copy bought in Stockholm with a gold CBS Records Sweden promo stamp on the rear sleeve at top right. The record labels are again the same as my copy.

Gerd Rundel's later copy with the spelling mistake corrected has the same outer sleeve, but without the sticker on the front. The inner sleeve is no longer shaped - it has a raised middle at top front and a cut-out middle at top rear. The catalogue number is now just "CBS 86113" and the track titles are left aligned instead of being centred. "MADE IN ENGLAND" is still at the bottom of the labels. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S 86113 A8, Side 2 - CBS-S 86113 B8.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding a rare Irish pressing on eBay and to Hans Seegers for label scans. The sleeve and inner sleeve are the same as the UK sleeve shown and the spelling mistake on the Side 1 label has been corrected. However, a new mistake has been introduced - Saving Grace is mistitled "Saving Grave"! Thanks to Gerd Rundel for spotting this.

This release has a single folded card as the insert. The reproduction of the album front has "BOB DYLAN" in white! The first cassette is light grey with printed text in black, there are no paper labels. Manuel García Jara's copy has exactly the same insert, but the cassette has blue text with the same layout.

CBS 86113 (NL), Jun 1980:

CBS 86113 (NL) - front with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel

The front sleeve of the copy of this album shown has a "Nice Price" sticker, which Manuel García Jara informs me were not produced until 1983, so there must have been earlier copies without the sticker. Like the UK release, the record also has a picture inner sleeve (squared, not shaped) and orange/yellow CBS labels. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86113- 4A-1, Side 2 - 01-86113- 4B-1. Both sleeve and record were made in Holland.

Wiebke Dittmer

Wiebke Dittmer has a promo copy intended for West Germany with a gold embossed stamp in German "Unverkäufliches Muster [Sample Not for Sale]" on the rear sleeve.

Arie de Reus has a copy with an unofficial front sticker with text "Warning! This Bob Dylan album Saved is the worst Bob Dylan album ever released...". Apparently these stickers were printed by a self-appointed music critic who surreptitiously stuck them on copies on record store shelves! He also stickered albums by other artists with similar comments.

CBS 86113 (NL for France) - front with French sticker, photo by Peter Pearson
Peter Pearson has a Dutch copy sold in France with a French language sticker on the front sleeve and a double-sided English lyrics insert omitting A Satisfied Mind, which wasn't written by Bob. Both sides of the lyric sheet have printed “Avec l’aimable autorisation pour la France des Editions Bagatelle, 10,rue Washington, 75008 Paris”. The record is in the same picture inner sleeve as above. Manuel García Jara's copy has a white sticker with "CB|281" in a box on the rear sleeve covering the original detail of "CB|271" but not the "57". There is also a yellow sticker with "1766", which was probably the price in French francs. The record of Manuel's copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86113-3A-1, Side 2 - 01-86113-4B-1.

Simon Blokker has a 1980 Holland for France copy release of "Saved" with the front sticker, the lyrics insert and the CBS 86113 orange/yellow labels as shown above. However, on the rear sleeve there is a sticker with the mid-1980s catalogue number "32742" from the mid 80's release and the codes "CB|231" in a rectangle (not "CB|271") and "53" in a circle (not "57").

The mid 1980s Dutch release has a new catalogue number, CBS 32742 (the CBS 32xxx catalogue numbers were introduced around 1982). The front sleeve has a different “NICE PRICE” sticker from the 1980 copy above. The rear sleeve has different text at top right below the CBS logo (the new catalogue number, "CB|231" in a rectangle plus "52" in a circle) and a small catalogue number at bottom left. The record has the same picture inner sleeve except for a cut-out in the middle top front for better removal of the record. The record has red CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-32742-3A-1 (handwritten), 01-86113-3A-1 (stamped), Side 2 - 01-32742-2B-1 (handwritten), 01-86113-2B-1 (stamped).

There may be a release of this album with the new catalogue number but still with orange/yellow CBS labels.

The 1980 insert has anti-counterfeiting printing on the outside. The mid-1980s release has the new "Nice Price" catalogue number and the insert is completely different and no longer has the anti-counterfeiting printing. The cassette now has chrome tape.

Slow Train Coming, Saved, Infidels and Real Live are the only Dylan albums from Spain where promo copies were released with white labels. Promo copies of other albums sent to radio stations and music journalists were just the regular albums. The record was made in Spain and had a picture inner sleeve. There was also a double-sided lyrics insert unique to Spain. The promo copy had the regular sleeve, inner sleeve and lyrics insert, but also a five-page promotional insert with an article about the album in Spanish by V. M. Postigo. The sleeve was printed in Spain by Offset ALG of Madrid, and the Discos CBS address shown is Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16. There is what looks like an overprinted panel on the rear sleeve at top right. The records of both the promo and commercial copies shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36553-1H, Side 2 - PBL-36553-1C (US matrix numbers).

CBS 32742 (PR) (Spain) - front with sticker, scan by Manuel García Jara (1985 release)

The 1985 CBS Spain stereo vinyl release has the replacement front sleeve and a new catalogue number, CBS 32742 (PR). As far as I know, this Spanish release in the "Nice Price" series and the Portuguese release below are the only ones outside the USA with the replacement picture. The front has a "PRECIO REDONDO [NICE PRICE]" sticker. On the rear sleeve the Discos CBS address is now Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046 Madrid, but the printer is still Offset, ALG. The CBS logo and new catalogue number are now printed over what looks like an overprinted panel on the rear sleeve at top right. The record now has red CBS labels and was made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A. It was also available on cassette. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32742-AO, Side 2 - 32742-BO.

"Saved" - stereo vinyl LP release, CBS S 86113 (Spain for Portugal), 1980, re-released in 1985:

CBS S 86113 (Spain for Portugal) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (1980 release)
These albums were made in Spain for the Portuguese market, and were not sold in Spain. The rear sleeve looks identical to that of the 1980 Spanish release, including what looks like an overprinted panel at top right. The album has the same inner sleeve and insert as the 1980 Spanish release. The 1980 release has the original front sleeve. The record labels look the same as those of the 1980 Spanish release except that they have "SPA" (Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores) instead of "SGAE" to the right of the centre hole. The only difference between the labels of the 1980 and 1985 releases is that the 1985 Side label has a red rubber stamp.

CBS S 86113 (Spain for Portugal) - Side 2 scan by Lars M. Banke (1985 release)

The 1985 release has the replacement front sleeve but still has the original Spanish catalogue number "S 86113" on the rear sleeve and record labels. It also has no barcode. The record of the 1985 copy shown has difficult to read handwritten matrix numbers that include the European catalogue number "86113" on both sides. In contrast, Manuel García Jara's 1985 copy of Saved, pressed in Spain for Portugal as this one was, has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36553-1H, Side 2 - PBL-36553-1C (US matrix numbers, and the same as those of the 1980 Spanish release above).

The 1985 Spanish release above with the new artwork had the catalogue number "32742", a barcode on the rear sleeve, and red CBS record labels. The 1985 copy exported to Portugal has the reference "S 86113" to preserve the original catalogue number and the even catalogue number on the rear sleeve has been modified. For this release CBS Spain used copies still in stock with orange/yellow labels (the ones with the original reference) but with the logo of the Portuguese copyright society "SPA" printed over "SGAE".

Portugal had previously had its own release of this album, made and distributed there by CBS Música e Discos in 1980, with the original artwork (printed by Grafica Monumental) and with SPA (Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores) on the record labels. Although CBS was active in Portugal until the 1990s, the production of albums was decreasing there in the second half of the 1980s: in fact the last Dylan album released in Portugal was Empire Burlesque (1985). Some Dylan records (e.g. More Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits) were reissued after this time, but no new Dylan albums were pressed in Portugal. Dylan albums sold in Portugal in this period were imported from Holland and also from Spain. The record of the copy shown has matrix Numbers: Side 1 - H-P-PORTUGAL (stamped) PAL 36553-1G (handwritten) 01- 86113-1-A1(stamped), Side 2 - 01-86113-B (stamped) H-P-PORTUGAL PAL (stamped).

CBS 86113 (Greece) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1980 release)

The 1980 record was made in Greece and has the same catalogue number as the UK album. The rear sleeve has a barcode. There is also an insert (not shown). The record has orange/yellow CBS labels. Both Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara's copies have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 86113-AF, Side 2 - CBS 86113-BF. Lars M. Banke has a copy of this record in a laminated mid-1980s sleeve with the same labels as shown and matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 86113 A (stamped), Side 2 -86113 B F (handwritten) (no "CBS" on Side 2).

The mid-1980s release has the new catalogue number CBS 32742. Apart from the new numbers, the sleeve and record labels look exactly the same, with even the same barcode on the rear. The sleeve this time has a "Nice Price" CBS sticker. The record again has orange/yellow CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 86113 A F (stamped), Side 2 - 86113 B F (handwritten). Again there is no “CBS” on Side 2. As well as his copy with this sleeve and sticker that has a record with the first catalogue number, Lars knows of another copy, so the first copies with the mid-1980s sleeve may have been issued with records from old stock!

CBS 86113 (Israel) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
This Israeli album was made and distributed by CBS Limited in Tel-Aviv. The front sleeve unusually has the catalogue number printed at top left. The rear sleeve has the CBS logo in a white panel printed at top right (not a sticker) and copyright text in English and Hebrew at the bottom. It doesn't include the usual inner sleeve but it has a double-sided insert with the same design as the inner sleeve of other releases. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with "MADE IN ISRAEL" at the bottom in English and Hebrew and the logo of the Israeli copyright association "ACUM" to the left of the centre hole. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86113-3A-1, Side 2 - 01-86113-3B-1.

The gold obi (which doesn't scan very well) has details of Bob's five previous 1970s albums on the reverse and a price of ¥2.500. In addition to the inner sleeve containing the picture that was later used as the album sleeve, there is a four-page insert with Japanese liner notes and lyrics in English/Japanese.

The Japanese characters above "SIDE A" and "SIDE B" on the right of the labels indicate that my copy of the album is a promo, although the outer sleeve, inner sleeve and insert are the same as the commercial album. Unlike the UK album above, which has a shaped inner sleeve, the Japanese album has a squared inner sleeve of thinner paper, but with an inner polythene liner.

The record of my copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 25AP-1890A1 (plus what looks like a Japanese character), Side 2 - 25AP-1890B1  1 A 0. The record of Sergio Mariano Romay's copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 25AP-1890A1  1 A 10, Side 2 - 25AP-1890B1  1 A 4. Ronald Born's commercial copy also has a CBS/Sony feedback postcard with a questionnaire about the customer and their music buying habits.

This album was also released in Singapore/Malaysia and Hong Kong with the same catalogue number, see below.

Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay and Ronald Born for scans of the commercial release.

CBS/Sony/Jigu Records KJPL-0233 (South Korea) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (promo and commercial releases - Japanese text obscured but "25AP 1890" still visible on right)

Between 1978 and 1991 Jigu Records released records in South Korea on behalf of CBS/Sony Japan. This is the first regular Dylan album released there that I know of. (The first Dylan album was a 1978 compilation called Bob Dylan, CBS/Sony/Jigu Records KJPL-0143, see International Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations) 1970s.) This Jigu Records album is very similar to the Japanese 25AP 1890 release, although inexplicably the front sleeve still has the European catalogue number "CBS 86113" at top right. The copyright text from the Japanese album at bottom of the rear sleeve is still visible, although the Japanese catalogue number is still present above the CBS/Sony logo at bottom right. The Korean catalogue number has been printed over the price in Japanese yens. the rear sleeve includes the Korean translation of the song titles, the album has an insert with lyrics in English and comment in South Korean not present with the Japanese release. The record of the copy shown comes in a white plastic inner sleeve with CBS/Sony and Jigu logos in blue, and has matrix numbers: Side 1 - KJPL - 0233 A, Side 2 - KJPL - 0233 B.

Simon Blokker has a .promo copy which differs from the commercial release:

The promo album has the same rear sleeve and insert as the commercial release, although the record comes in a plain inner sleeve. It has the same matrix numbers as the commercial release.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Simon Blokker for information and scans.

These albums were manufactured by The Gramophone Record Company (Pty) Ltd (part of EMI) on behalf of CBS. They had the same front sleeve as the original 1980 US album. There are only tiny differences between the rear sleeves at the bottom right as shown below, but the South African sleeve, printed by Interpak, is laminated and made of thick card whereas the sleeve from Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) is not laminated and made of much thinner card. The South African copy came with the picture inner sleeve while the very much rarer Zimbabwean copy did not. The Zimbabwean rear sleeve has "4-A" at bottom right instead of "interpak" (both have "95"). The "4-A" code means it was printed by Belmont Printers of Bulawayo. Belmont Printers used codes starting with "4" for sleeves they printed for CBS Records and other codes for sleeves they printed for other companies. The records have orange/yellow CBS labels with different placement of the text elements.

Thanks to Mick Robinson for initial information and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans.

"Saving Grace" (UK, 2000) - DVD picture from www.amazon.co.uk

"Saving Grace" (USA, 2007) - TV series promo poster picture from www.imdb.com

The later promo album has a sticker on the back (below the Columbia logo) with "Disco promocional prohibida la venta" ["Promotional record sale prohibited"} and the same wording is printed on the labels above the album title. The "3309" sticker on the front sleeve was probably added by a radio station employee or disc jockey.

The rear sleeve is in monochrome as opposed to colour on other releases. The title is translated into Spanish on the sleeve, as are the song titles and credits. The song titles are given on the rear sleeve and the record labels in Spanish and English. The Spanish translations of the song titles on the rear sleeve and the record labels are all correct except Saving Grace, which is bizarrely translated as "Salvadora Grace", interpreting "Grace" as a woman's name, rather than a virtue! The correct Spanish translation is "Gracia Salvadora". ("Saving Grace" has been used as the title of a 2000 UK film starring Brenda Blethyn and a 2007-10 US TV series starring Holly Hunter, both about "saving" a woman called Grace.)

As well as the translated title the front sleeve has a Columbia logo. Curiously, the rear sleeve has the CBS logo instead of Columbia. In contrast, the previous Argentine release, Slow Train Coming, has the CBS logo on the front sleeve but the Columbia logo on the rear! The picture inner sleeve used in the US and in many other countries is missing. The commercial album has a curious inner sleeve, not on promo copies, made of white plastic (not paper) with details of contemporary Columbia Argentina albums printed on both sides.

The records of both the promo and the commercial copies shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-36553, Side 2 - BL-36553 (the US catalogue number).

Thanks to Sergio Magnacca, Manuel García Jara and Lars M. Banke for information and pictures.

"Salvado [Saved]" - stereo cassette release, Columbia 60.096 (Argentina), 1980:

Columbia 60.096 (Argentina) - cassette front scan by Sergio Mariano Romay
This cassette release comes in a black outer case with a green insert, blank on the inside. The song titles are in Spanish and English on the insert, and in Spanish only on the cassette itself. The translations are the same as on the vinyl release.

The Colombian release of Saved has the regular front sleeve. The rear sleeve has the CBS logo on a yellow background and the "Estereo Sonido 360" logo (by now obsolete). Simon Blokker's copy has the bottom copyright text on the rear sleeve in red instead of white. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels. The song titles are not translated. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - COL 141380 A 7-VIII-80 (7 Aug 1980), Side 2 - COL 141380 B 7-VIII-80 (7 Aug 1980). Lars M. Banke has a copy with a promo stamp on Side 2, although both sides also have undesired handwriting.

"Saved" - stereo vinyl album, Max LP. 8013 (Turkey), 1981:

Max LP. 8013 (Turkey) - front scan by Hans Seegers
This LP's legality is unclear - it was unauthorised by CBS/Columbia, but was legal in Turkey at the time of release. It has black "Max" labels with minimum information.

Thanks to Ulf Gyllenspetz for information and Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"Saved" - remastered stereo vinyl LP release, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 8898454510213 (Europe), 1 Dec 2017:

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 8898454510213 (Europe) - front picture from www.amazon.co.uk
This European album has the replacement front sleeve as used in the USA from 1985. The record labels therefore are red US Columbia type as befits that period. Scans of the labels required! The inner sleeve is not shaped but square and unusually opens at the side, not the top. Éamonn Ó Catháin says "The pressing is excellent but here my praise must end. The sound is dull and lifeless. A limp and ineffective digital to vinyl transfer. In direct comparison, my original Irish pressing absolutely thrashed it. I had to turn up the 2017 album considerably to get anywhere near listenable sound".

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information.

CD Releases

"Saved" - CD releases, Columbia CK 36553 (USA), late 1980s (three variants):

Columbia CK 36553 (USA) - front scan by Gil Lamont (both variants)
These releases use the replacement front sleeve design. The front insert is a single folded card.

My copy is a later release and has a different barcode on the rear insert. It also has a "DIDP" number and Columbia copyright information on the CD, missing from Gil Lamont's CD. The "DIDP" number (Digital Identification Popular) is a code used by Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) on CDs pressed in Terre Haute, IN, or one of their other CD plants in the USA, from 1983 onwards (Classical CDs had "DIDC"). It's not present on the first CD, which probably means that the initial release was either manufactured by Sony in Japan, or at another US CD pressing plant under contract from Columbia.

Paul Shenton's copy has the same CD as mine with "DIDP" but there is a third barcode on the rear insert. The inside of the front insert is now white instead of being pale green.

"Saved" - CD releases, Columbia CK 36553 (Canada), late 1980s:

Columbia CK 36553 (Canada) - front scan by Jack from Canada
These releases again use the replacement front sleeve design. The front insert is a single folded card. Moise Potié's later Canadian copy has the same artwork as Jack's but a slightly different CD with the differences shown.

Thanks to Jack from Canada and Moise Potié for information and scans.

"Saved" - CD release, Sony Records SRCS 6170 (Japan), 1 Dec 1991:

Sony Records SRCS 6170 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Wil Gielen

This later mid-priced CD is as far as I know the only CD release of this album in Japan. It has the "hands" sleeve and a black and white obi in the "NICE PRICE LINE 15" series with white, red and yellow text, price ¥1,800 (¥1,748 before tax) and release date "91-12-1". There is a folded front insert and a second insert which opens out (not shown).

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and Wil Gielen for scans.

"Saved" - CD releases, Columbia CD 32742 (Austria for Europe), 1990s/2000s:

Columbia CD 32742 (Austria for Europe) - front scan by Jack from Canada (first release)

The first release of this later mid-priced CD has the "hands" sleeve. The front insert is a single folded card and the CD is silver with red panels and black text. There's no text at bottom right of the inside of the front insert. My copy is the same as Jack from Canada's.

Columbia CD 32742 (Austria for Europe) - rear insert scan by Jack from Canada (first release)

Columbia CD 32742 (Austria for Europe) - unfolded front insert scan by Jack from Canada (first release)

Columbia CD 32742 (Austria for Europe) - inside of unfolded front insert (my copy - both releases)

Columbia CD 32742 (Austria for Europe) - rear insert photo by Peter Pearson (second release)

Peter Pearson's copy has the replacement front design. It has "01-032742-10" at bottom left of the reverse of the front insert. The CD is in a red tray, which probably means it was a “Nice Price” release, also the front insert has staple holes where a "Nice Price" leaflet was probably removed.

Thanks to Jack from Canada and Peter Pearson for information and scans.

"Saved" - CD release, Columbia CDCBS 32742 (Australia), 1990s:

Columbia CDCBS 32742 (Australia) - front scan by Bill Hester
This Columbia release has the replacement sleeve and a red CD with silver text manufactured by Sony Music Australia. The front insert is a single folded card. The inside has the catalogue number at bottom right. missing from the European release. As far as I know this release is still on sale.

Scans of earlier Australian CD releases required!

Thanks to Bill Hester for information and scans.

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK23" plus "DISC 27". This album has been remastered, so is the seventh Dylan album remastered for this project. The CDs are different in detail, the US Saved CD has catalogue number "88691924312D27", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-27". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Sony Music SICP 30571 (Japan) - front with obi, picture from CD Japan web-site
Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1980s albums from Saved to Oh Mercy will be released in Japan on 27 Aug 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30571 to SICP 30579. The 2014 remastered Saved is SICP 30571, more details will be added when available.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
