This page is part of a list of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the
Searching For A Gem list.
Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here
- as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo
releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former
yearly Promo sections.
For releases of this
album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International
Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Original stereo 2LP set: CBS/Sony 40AP 1100/01 (Japan), 21 Aug 1978/Columbia PC2-36067
(USA), Apr 1979.
This live album, recorded at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan, on 28 Feb 1978
and 1 Mar 1978, was intended to be a Japan-only release but so many copies were being
imported by Dylan fans elsewhere that it was given a worldwide release.
The sleeve and booklet photographs are by Joel Bernstein and
Hirosuke Katsuyama. The liner notes in Japanese are in two parts: Part 1
is a 1978 Japanese tour 1978 review by critic Eiji Ogura and Part 2 is the story
of the process of making the album by Heckel Sugano who worked for CBS/Sony
Japan at the time. This includes: meeting Don Devito, the recorded shows were 28
Feb plus 1 and 2 Mar*, the total tapes were as long as 5 hours, and mixing the
tapes in Apr 1978 by engineer Tomo'o "Tom" Suzuki, selecting photos with Teruhisa
Tajima for the outer and inner gatefold sleeve. (Tom and Teru also did Miles
Davis' live in Japan album Agharta & Pangaea).
*Sonny Boy McFitzson spoke to both Heckel Sugano
and Tom Suzuki at the 8LP Listening Party for The Complete Budokan 1978
in Tokyo on 26 Nov 2023. Heckel was considering recording the 2 Mar show for
back-up, but Bob told him on 1 Mar, "We did
very good shows, no need to record any more."
so 24 channel tapes for 2 Mar don't exist, unfortunately. Tom followed, "The
tape budget was saved, hahaha."
Also shown is a copy owned by Wil Gielen of the tour book sold at the
Japanese 1978 shows. The copy has been signed by Bob on Page 5. Wil has passed
on these comments from the seller:
"We think that the
tour book belonged to Shibuya Youichi who was the editor of "Rockin' On"
magazine, and a well known music writer here in Japan.
There is no proof (no letter of authenticity etc.) but the book – and
others from the same era - was bought by the original seller directly
from the office of "Rockin' On" who were clearing out some of their
accumulated items. Other items belonging to Shibuya Youichi were
included in this batch of items, his name and notes were included on some
tour books that they offered (not this one though) and so we agreed that
it’s most likely that they were originally his items. The original
seller is a big and well known collectors store in Jinboucho in Tokyo,
in the main book selling area of Tokyo and in the area where many music
magazines have offices – so it is normal that they can buy items like
this and I think we can believe the background information.
The other reason why I believe these details is because in Japan it is
very hard for "ordinary people" and fans to get any access to artists,
in Japan security and venues are very strict indeed. For an artist as
big as Bob Dylan, I think only music business people would have the
chance to receive an autograph directly.
As I said, we have no proof or documentation except what we are told,
and I have seen the other Shibuya Youichi tour books from the same era
so in my mind it is likely to be true. And of course, I would not buy a
signed item from any source – only ones that I trusted, and who have
access to such items.
I don’t know the exact date of the signature though – almost certainly
it was signed in Tokyo (the Budokan is about five minutes walk from the
collectors store and music magazine offices in Jinboucho)."
Sonny Boy McFitzson's photos are from 50th Anniversary
Exhibition of the Japanese promoter UDO (Tokyo, 8 Mar - 31 Mar 2019). UDO was
established by Seijiro Udo, the current president and tour manager is Tatsuo
"Tack" Takahashi. Both are credited in the Bob Dylan
At Budokan booklet but Udo is misspelled
as Uda. Replicas of the signed 1978 poster were given away to VIP ticket
purchasers for the Japan Tour 2016.
Tracklisting (not in concert order):
Side 1: Mr. Tambourine Man (B); Shelter From The Storm
(A); Love Minus Zero/No Limit (A); Ballad Of A Thin Man (B); Don't Think
Twice, It's All Right (A)

Side 3: Blowin' In The Wind (B); Just Like A Woman

(A) Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan, 28 Feb 1978
(B) Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan, 1 Mar 1978
Bob actually played eight nights at the Nippon Budokan
in Feb-Mar 1978, but only these two plus 2 Mar 1978 (no songs from which were
used) were professionally recorded.

Vinyl and Tape Releases:
1978 (Japan, Australia, New Zealand only)
"Bob Dylan At Budokan" - 2LP promo/commercial releases, CBS/Sony 40AP 1100-01
(Japan), 21 Aug 1978:
The album was released in Japan in Aug 1978, and in
Australia/New Zealand later in 1978, but not until Apr 1979 in the rest of the
world. As well as the regular booklet and poster (see
below for my scans from the UK release),
there is a magnificent gold, red, white and black obi, which has Bob's then
album catalogue on the reverse.
Sergio Mariano Romay's copy has a black sticker with
white text "Copyright © 1978 Bob Dylan" on the inside of the gatefold sleeve
next to Bob's sleeve notes. This was printed on later copies.
The records have CBS/Sony labels and those shown (Patrick Helfrich's copy) have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 40AP-1100 A1, Side 2 - 40AP-1100 B1, Side 3 - 40AP-1101 A1, Side 4 - 40AP-1101 B1.
Hans Seegers has a promo copy
with a three page promo-only insert where the records have red labels with promo stamps (not shown). Hans
Seegers informs me there was a counterfeit release available in Italy soon after
the Japanese release. Lars M. Banke has a copy of this counterfeit release
which looks the same as the official release. For full details, see
here.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Patrick Helfrich, Sergio Mariano
Romay, Lars M. Banke and Simon Blokker for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan At Budokan" - two cassette release, CBS/Sony 40KP
334-5
(Japan), 21 Aug 1978:
"Bob Dylan At Budokan - stereo 2LP set, CBS S2BP 220211 (Australia/New
Zealand), 1978:
Both the Australian and New Zealand releases have the same gatefold sleeve, poster and inner
sleeves, presumably all made in Australia. The Australian release has a front sticker with "Recorded Live in
Japan". The artwork is the same as the UK release and it includes the large
poster, this time with the Australian/New Zealand catalogue number. The records
for both releases are in
picture inner sleeves and have orange/yellow CBS labels. The Australian
records are numbered SBP
237313 and SBP 237314 and were made in Australia, the New Zealand records
are numbered S2BP 220211, have the text placed differently and were made in New
Zealand. Stuart Moore has a promo copy of the first Australian release in
exactly the packaging as the commercial release, but with "PROMOTION ONLY NOT
FOR SALE" printed on the record labels.
Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN
AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This
is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian
Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C.
changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after
that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information.
Despite the fact that the first release of this album was in 1978, the first
release labels still have the shorter text. The later release labels have the
longer text. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till
late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not
have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces (see
1978). Slow Train Coming from
1979 does have the CBS copyright.)
Thanks to Stuart Moore and Bill Hester for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan At Budokan (Cartridge Two)" - 8-track stereo release, CBS
2TC 211 (Australia), 1978:
CBS 2TC 211 (Australia) - end of tape cartridge,

Like the US and Canadian 8-track releases below, Oh, Sister and It's All Right Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) are split across
programs with fades out and in, so this is also listed in
1979.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and scans.

Lars M.
Banke says: "The sticker “Skivgrossisten” indicates that it is put on the
label by the wholesale company that imports these records and sells them to
retail shops. Why this wholesale company found it necessary to put the
sticker on the discs, I do not know. Also I do not know why this one was not
“stickered” like the other export copies – with CBS stickers or “neutral”
stickers.
The company
“Skivgrossisten” was located in Skövde in Central Sweden and ceased trading in
2008. The purpose of the company was to “do retail business with music-related
products like phonograms and other business in accordance herewith” [my
translation]. A bit funny that it mentions retail business as the purpose when
the name indicates wholesale business. “Skivgrossisten” was also in the 1970s
the name of a (retail) record shop in Drottningsgatan in Stockholm. In fact it
was a chain with three shops – mainly selling so-called “cut-out” LPs. So
perhaps it is more likely that it was this “Skivgrossisten” shop who has put the
sticker on the “Budokan” album? Or perhaps “Skivgrossisten” was one single
company, meaning that the (mother) company in Skövde owned the three shops in
Stockholm?"
Lars has copies of John Wesley
Harding and Street-Legal bought in
Sweden with the same “Skivgrossisten”
stickers on the sleeve and record labels.

Steven Fant has a copy of P2T 36067 with the same
cassettes as above, again in two separate cases, but with different inserts, now
both the same size. The credits on the cassette 1 insert are now on the outside
on a folded panel and the insides of both inserts are the same with details of
other contemporary Columbia cassette releases. The outside of the cassette 2
insert looks the same as before.

The mid-1980s inserts
look the same as for the 1979 release. The inside of the cassette 2 insert is
again blank. The cassettes are light grey with black text, there are no paper
labels. Side 1 of each cassette has the inverted triangle symbol first used on LPs and cassettes
with Biograph in 1985.
Cassette 2 is different from cassette 1, with a speckled effect on the raised
edges round the cassette. Both cassettes
have "MADE IN U.S.A." embossed in the plastic on Side 2.

again comes in two separate cases. The cassette 1 insert is again back to the
same size as that of the 1979 release. The outside now has a barcode and the
inside again has the credits for musicians and sound engineers. The inside
of the cassette 2 insert is again blank. The cassettes are transparent
smoked grey with white text, there are no paper labels. Side 1 of each
cassette again has the inverted triangle symbol. |

(Canada for export), 1979:
Columbia PC2 36067 (Canada for export) - copy 1:
Patrick Helfrich's copy of the Canadian release
was exported to Europe and every instant of "Columbia" on the gatefold sleeve
has been covered by a black sticker (even on the spine), while the labels have
been pasted over completely with red stickers also omitting the Columbia name
(one sticker has been removed by a previous owner showing the regular
Columbia Canada label). Patrick's copy has the extra text in English and
French in black at bottom right front as does Lars M. Banke's first export
copy (copy 2 below).

2-3:
The Columbia Canada information on the rear of the
sleeve at bottom left as shown above is not covered. The
extra text in English and French in black at bottom right front is again
present on copy 2, although not on copy 3. Copy 3 also has a sticker covering the spine text.

copy again comes from Lars M. Banke and was this time bought in Denmark. It again
has a gatefold sleeve like Lars' second copy above (copy 3) without the
extra text at front bottom right. This time the sleeve has two instances of
"Columbia" obscured on the rear with small black stickers. The record labels
this time have the ring of Columbia logos obscured more professionally with black
ink that has either been stamped or painted on, there are no ring-shaped stickers.

This very unusual album was bought in Spain in the 1990s. It has the usual
Canadian gatefold sleeve with the Columbia logos obscured by white stickers, one on
the rear at bottom left, plus a wrap-around sticker on the spine that also shows
on the front. It does not have the extra text in
English and French in black at bottom right front. The records are the 1990s CBS/Sony Spanish release with red
labels, made in Spain by Tecnodisco S.A. for Sony Music, without stickers as the
two copies above. For the labels, see the
1990s Spanish release below.

There are two variants of this 8-track release, one with
orange cartridges and one with black cartridges, I only have pictures of
Cartridge Two of the second variant. The rear of the black Cartridge Two has "MADE IN CANADA" embossed on the top.
As for the US release, on Cartridge One
Love Minus Zero/No Limit and One More Cup Of Coffee (Valley Below)
are split across programs with fades out and in. On Cartridge Two Oh, Sister and
It's All Right Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) are split across programs with fades out
and in.
The US, Canadian and Australian 8-track cartridge releases are
therefore also listed in
1979.

"Bob Dylan At Budokan - stereo 2LP set, CBS 96004 (UK), Apr 1979,
re-released later in 1979, early 1980s, mid-1980s, late 1980s:
CBS 96004 (UK), 1979 (original release):
CBS 96004 (UK) - detail of booklet rear ("CBS 96004" at bottom left,
compare with booklet of later 1979 release and Dutch release below)
This album has sumptuous packaging for a UK release,
with a black/white 16-page booklet with sleeve notes in Japanese (untranslated)
and lyrics in English and Japanese. Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for translation
of the 12" x 12" booklet liner notes
here. The album's inner sleeve has the
text: "The more I think about it, the more I realise what I left
behind in Japan - my soul, my music and that sweet girl in the geisha house - I
wonder does she remember me? If the people of Japan wish to know about me, they
can hear this record - also they can hear my heart still beating in Kyoto at the
Zen Rock Garden. Someday I will be back to reclaim it."
The booklet was reprinted for the UK and has the UK
catalogue number "CBS 96004" as well as UK song copyrights. There is also a large fold-out poster, which
again has the CBS logo and "96004" in the bottom right hand corner. The records have orange/yellow CBS labels and two catalogue
numbers - on the left is "S CBS 96004" (both records) and on the right
is "S CBS 83691 (40AP 1100 A/B)" (Record 1) or "S CBS 83692
(40AP 1101 A/B)" (Record 2). The record set numbering "Record 1/2 of
a 2 Record Set" is printed above the album title. "BOB DYLAN" does not
appear except in the album title (in all the releases below except the first
the name appears twice).
"MADE IN ENGLAND" is at the
bottom of the labels. The
matrix numbers of my copy are:
Side 1 - 96004-A3, S-CBS-83691-A3, BOB (all handwritten),
Side 2 - CBS-S-96004-B4, 83691-B4 (both handwritten),
Side 3 - CBS-S-83692-A6, 96004-C6 (both handwritten),
Side 4 - 96004-D3, CBS-S-83692-B3 (both handwritten).

1979 release) |

Gerd Rundel has
a previously unlisted UK Budokan copy with a label variant that must be a second
release. The gatefold sleeve, booklet and poster are the same as for my copy.
The record labels have a totally different layout from all listed copies and I
suspect they may have been printed by a different company:
-
The "LC|0149" capsule is
positioned high on the right above the album title
-
“S CBS 96004” is printed to
the right of the centre hole (all other releases including mine have "(S) CBS
83691" or "(S) CBS 83692") - these are the only UK labels where this occurs
-
the record speed is to the
left of the centre hole above “Stereo”
-
the record set numbering is
printed to the left of centre hole below “Stereo”, not above the album title
-
there are no arrows
to the left of centre hole below “Stereo” - again these are the only UK labels
without them (the Irish
labels below don't have these arrows but otherwise they're more like the other
UK labels than these)
The record set numbering and the
missing “BOB DYLAN” below the album title indicates that this is the second
release (only this copy and mine don't have the second “BOB DYLAN”). On the Side
3 label all text is positioned much higher than on the other labels. "MADE IN
ENGLAND" is at the bottom of the labels. The records of the copy shown have
handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 96004-A2, CBS-S-83691-A2, Side 2 -
CBS-S-96004-B4, 83691-B4, Side 3 - CBS-S-96004-C5, 83692-A5, Side 4 -
CBSS-83692-B5, CBSS-96004-D.
CBS 96004 (UK), later 1979 release:
CBS 96004 (UK) - front of gatefold sleeve (my copy) |
Gerd Rundel's slightly later copy has a CBS/Sony sleeve which
was printed in Holland. The front is the same as mine, but the rear has codes
"CB|252" and "63" in a circle below the Side 4 tracklist, "LC|0149" in a capsule
next to the CBS/Sony logo. Gerd's copy has a booklet but does not come with a
poster, although this may have been lost.
The rear of the booklet has only “96004” in the lower left corner while my
booklet has “CBS 96004” in the same position.
The record labels have a different orange/yellow design from mine with the text
elements to the left and right of the centre hole arranged differently. This
copy still has "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom of the labels. Patrick Helfrich
has an identical copy with the same record labels.

The records of Gerd's late 1979
copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 96004-A3, CBS-S-83691-A3, Side 2
- CBS-S-96004-B4, 83691-B4, Side 3 - CBS-S-96004-C5, 83692-A5, Side 4 -

The early 1980s releases, still with
orange/yellow CBS record labels, are very complicated!

S CBS 96004/CBS 83691 (UK) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (first early 1980s
release) |
This
variant, probably from around 1980, comes in the same gatefold sleeve as my
first release (i.e. printed in England, not Holland), with the booklet but
without the poster, which may have just been lost. All the record labels still
have “MADE IN ENGLAND” at the bottom but the catalogue number to the right of
the centre hole is now just "CBS 83691/CBS 83692" (missing the “S”). The records
of the copy shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 96004-A3,

above) |
Gerd also has a mixed labels copy with Sides 1, 2 and 4 the same as
immediately above , but where the Side 3 label has "S CBS 83692" to
the right of the centre hole (the same as the later 1979 variant above). |

96004 (UK), second early 1980s release:
S CBS 96004/CBS 83691 (UK) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (second
early 1980s release) |
Gerd Rundel has what must be a
second early 1980s copy.
The gatefold sleeve is the same
as my first release
(i.e. printed in England, not Holland),
again with the booklet but without the poster,
which may again have just been lost.
Like one of Gerd's first early 1980s releases
above, it
again has mixed record labels: the Side 1 label has “MADE IN ENGLAND” at the
bottom and is the same as the listed first early 1980s copy above so is not
shown again – all the other
labels have “MADE IN ENGLAND” in the circumference text to the right of the
centre hole, but are without text at the bottom. The records of this
copy have
handwritten matrix numbers: Side
1 - 96004-A2, CBS-S-83691-A2, Side 2 - CBS-S-96004-B5, 83691-B5, Side 3 -
CBS-S-83692-A6, 96004-C6, Side 4 - CBS-S-96004-D4, 83692-B4.
|

early 1980s release, "MADE IN ENGLAND" now in circumference text) |

1980s release) |
S CBS 96004/S CBS 83692 (UK) - Side 3 scan by Gerd Rundel (second early
1980s release) |
S CBS 96004/S CBS 83692 (UK) - Side 4 scan by Gerd Rundel (second early
1980s release) |
Gerd has now found a copy where all the
labels are the same, i.e. the Side 1 label is the same as the others with
“MADE IN ENGLAND” in the circumference text to the right of the centre hole, and
without text at the bottom. This and the Sides 2-4 labels of both copies are
shown above.
CBS
96004 (UK), third early 1980s release:
S CBS 96004/S CBS 83691 (UK) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (third early 1980s
release) |
Gerd Rundel has what must be a
even later early 1980s copy because it has the same text layout as his listed mid 1980s red CBS label release below.
The CBS copyright info is now at the bottom (there was no text there on the
previous release), while
"MADE IN ENGLAND" is in the circumference text on the right
as on the second early 1980s release Sides 2-4 labels.
Apart from
this the layout is also the same as that of the first and second 1980s copies above.
The gatefold sleeve is the same
as my first release. This copy did not have
either the booklet or
the poster when bought, but it may have had when new. The records of the copy
shown have
handwritten matrix numbers: Side

early 1980s release).

Gerd Rundel has a copy dating from after 1986 where
the records have red CBS labels.
The record labels all have "S CBS 96004" to the left of the centre hole and
"CBS 83691" or "CBS 83692" to the right. The
CBS copyright info is now at the bottom of the label and "MADE IN ENGLAND"
has moved to the circumference text. The gatefold sleeve is the
same as my original copy. This copy again did not have the booklet or
poster when bought, but it may have had when new. The records have handwritten matrix numbers:

Gerd has another
copy with red CBS labels which he believes is later. The record labels
now have "S CBS 83691" or "S CBS 83692" to the right of the centre
hole, and the CBS copyright info that was at the bottom of the labels is
now in the circumference text. The gatefold sleeve is again
the same as my copy. This copy again did not have the booklet or poster
when bought, but it may have had when new.
The handwritten
matrix numbers are the same as for the listed mid 1980s copy.

and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.

labels of the second copy shown are identical but "MADE

different handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 83691

are missing from the tape (Ballad Of A Thin Man,
One More Cup Of Coffee and Forever Young), even though the track listing and
running order are listed on the insert as being exactly the same as the double
LP. The running times of all the tracks as stated on the cassette insert are also
different from the current CD, up to a difference of 40 seconds with The Times

This set is the same as Gerd Rundel's second UK set with the exceptions illustrated. It has a
sticker on the front of the gatefold sleeve and the same poster and booklet. The
inside of the gatefold sleeve is the same as the UK set. The
original release records have orange/yellow CBS labels and both the Dutch catalogue number
CBS 96004 and the Japanese catalogue numbers 40-AP1100/1101 below in smaller
text. The matrix numbers of the records of the copy shown are:

This album was made in
Spain for export to Holland. The gatefold sleeve was made in Spain,
printed by Offset ALG, and the CBS address is Avenida del Generalísimo 25,
Madrid-16 as for the Spanish release below. This sleeve is identical to the Spanish original sleeve,
with text printed over some details of the Dutch sleeve as shown. It includes
the poster and booklet, although there is no front sticker. The record labels
have the same layout as the Dutch labels above including the "BIEM/STEMRA" Dutch
copyright organisation logo, also the same as the first Holland for Germany set
below, but they have "MADE IN SPAIN" in the circumference text. The records have
matrix numbers identical to the first Spanish release: Side 1 - 96004 A, Side 2
- BL-36068-2A, Side 3 - AL-36069-2B, Side 4 - BL-36069-2G. This set could not have been
sold in Spain because it does not have the "SGAE" logo or the
Spanish "Depósito Legal" authorisation number as on the Spanish labels
below.

This album was also released in the former German Democratic Republic (East
Germany). The records of the East German set were manufactured at the Amiga pressing plant in Potsdam-Babelsberg
(East Berlin) for sale in the
East German Intershop "hard currency" shops. The set comes in the Dutch gatefold sleeve as above
but without poster or booklet. The record labels have the German "GEMA"
copyright organisation logo (unboxed) and
"MADE IN GERMANY". Ronald Born's commercial copy has stamped matrix numbers:
Side 1 - 96 004 - 1A, Side 2 - 96 004 - 2A, Side 3 - 96 004 - 3A, Side 4 -
96 004 - 4A.
Ronald Born also has a nondescript but very rare record
originally found in a charity shop in Potsdam, Germany. It's a "test pressing"
of Record 1 of the 1980 East German Intershop release. It has the correct
stamped matrix numbers (Side 1 - 96 004-1A, Side 1 - 96 004-2A, the same as his
commercial copy) and the typical small pressing ring (approx. 32mm) of the Amiga
pressing plant in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Because of the sleeve (the rear is just
pink) and the uncommon labels Ronald thinks that it is more an "in house"
release for some loyal employees than a test pressing. Dylan is mentioned only
in a handwritten note on the inner sleeve.
Hanns Peter Bushoff also has an East German Amiga test
pressing of Record 1 only. It comes in a plain white sleeve with a front sticker
as shown dated 21 May 1980. The artist name and title are incorrectly written as
"Bob Dylon: At The Bodukan". The record has white labels with the
German text "Unverkäufliche
Musterplatte [Disc Sample Not For Sale]", the matrix number stamped in red,
and the date "14 Mai 1980 [14 May 1980]" stamped in black. Lars M.
Banke has a third test pressing with both records with the same white labels but
different handwritten text with "Bob Dylan" in green on Sides 1 and 3.
The records come in plain white inner sleeves. The records of this copy have
stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 96 004 1 A, Side 2 - 96 004 2 A, Side 3 - 96
004 3 A, Side 4 - 96 004 4 A.
Intershop also sold East German pressed releases of Infidels, Down In
The Groove and Dylan And The Dead. For an East German Amiga
pressing of the Dutch 1966 version of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, see International
Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations) 1960s.
CBS 96004 (NL for East? Germany) - front with sticker, scan by Manuel García Jara (first copy) |
This is where the picture becomes very complicated! Manuel García Jara
has two copies that come with a front sticker, poster and booklet. The
sleeves were printed in Holland, and all the record labels have "MADE IN
GERMANY". The first sticker is not the same as the Dutch sticker in one
detail - the top text line has three stars instead of the word "LIVE". |

The design of the record labels of the first copy is exactly the same as those of Patrick Helfrich's East German-pressed copy, but the records
have matrix numbers as follows:
Side 1 - 01-96004-2A-2, Side 2 - 01-96004-1B-2, Side 3 - 01-96004-3C-2, Side
4 - 01-96004-2D-1 plus "NL" stamped on each side.
These are definitely Dutch matrix numbers (see above)! Hanns Peter
Bushoff points out that the East German record labels have small recessed
circles in the centre, while these
labels have in addition a much wider recessed ring, like the Dutch labels above.

Manuel's second copy also comes with a front sticker, poster and booklet.
The second sticker is now exactly the same as the Dutch sticker.
There is also an owner's sticker from a collector in Hamburg in what was
then West Germany (address and telephone details have been obscured to
preserve privacy). All the record labels again have "MADE IN
GERMANY", but this time there is an asterisk over the side number to the
right of the centre hole.
The records have matrix numbers as follows: Side 1 - 01-96004-1A-2, Side 2
- 01-96004-2B-1, Side 3 - 01-96004-2C-1, Side 4 - 01-96004-1D-1.
No "NL" on each side, but still Dutch matrix numbers. The labels
again have wide recessed rings.
Dag
Braathen has a copy with a sticker, poster and booklet
with variant 2 record
labels (with asterisks). This copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-96004-2A-2, Side 2
- 01-96004-3B-1, Side 3 - 01-96004-3C-1, Side 4 - 01-96004-2D-1. "NL"
stamped on
each side of Record 2 only. These are again Dutch matrix numbers.
Ronald Born
thinks that if these albums were made in Holland, as pointed to by the
evidence, they would not have been sold in East Germany because of the cost

Lars M. Banke says: "I
have one copy that you list as the “original” East German pressing: it has
no sticker on the front sleeve and no asterisk above the side numbers on the
labels and the records have the following matrix numbers: Side 1 - 96 004 –
1A, Side 2 - 96 004 – 2A, Side 3 - 96 004 – 3A, Side 4 - 96 004 – 4A. I also
have a copy with the sticker with three stars instead of "LIVE". This copy
also has the asterisk above the side numbers on the labels and the records
have the following matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-96004-1 A2, Side 2 -
01-96004-1 B2, Side 3 - 01-96004-1 C1, Side 4 - 01-96004-2 D1. I have
another one – with the "LIVE" sticker - and no asterisk above the side
numbers on the labels where the records have the following matrix numbers:
Side 1 - 01-96004-2 A2, Side 2 - 01-96004-3 B1, Side 3 - 01-96004-3 C2, Side
4 - 01-96004-2 D1 plus “NL” on Side 4 only. My fourth copy has no sticker
and no asterisk above the side numbers on the labels with records with the
following matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-96004-1 A1 , Side 2 - 01-96004-3 B1,
Side 3 - 01-96004-3 C2, Side 4 - 01-96004-2 D1, and again “NL” on Side 4
only. I haven’t really studied the details, but it looks like my copies are
combinations of the some of the ones already listed on the website."

The 1979 records have
orange/yellow
CBS labels and the copies shown have
handwritten matrix numbers
Side 1 - CI 96004-1L 28-5-79, Side 2 - CI 96004-2L 28-5-79, Side 3 - CI 96004-3L 28-5-79, Side 4 - CI 96004-4L 28-5-79 (pressing date 28 May 1979). The bottom text "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" is not centred,
but aligned as if the word "SUGAR" from previous Italian releases has been
omitted. On these labels the recessed centre is much smaller than on the UK
and Dutch record labels above.
Lars M. Banke's first 1987 copy has the same front sleeve with the printed
panel described in detail for the second 1987 release below.
The text at the bottom left rear of the gatefold sleeve is different from the
1979 release, and there is no obscured Dutch text. The inner gatefold is
identical. The records still have orange/yellow labels but "MADE IN
ITALY BY CBS" is now in the circumference text. The records have handwritten
matrix numbers: Side 1 - CI 96004-1L-13-10-87, Side 2 - CI 96004-2L-13-10-87,
Side 3 - CI 96004-3L-13-10-87, Side 4 - CI 96004-4L-13-10-87 (pressing
date 13 Oct 1987). Hans Seegers also has a copy of this release.

"Bob Dylan At Budokan - reissue stereo 2LP set, CBS 96004 (Italy), 13 Oct 1987
(second release):
CBS stopped releasing vinyl albums in Italy
in the early 1980s, Real Live
was probably the last Dylan vinyl album to be released in Italy. For this
reason, Italian albums of the late 1980s with red CBS labels are very scarce and
they were published only as parts of series, for example Blood
On The Tracks from the series "Il
Rock" (1988). This 1987 2LP release could be also part of another series because
the front of the gatefold sleeve has a big yellow sticker with Italian text in
black "I Grandi Successi "Dal Vivo" Album Doppio" [Greatest Hits "Live" Double
Album] This sticker also has the text "Disco TV. GLOBO Coordinamento per C.
Benvenuti - F. Carraresi Jr." [TV Record. GLOBO Coordinated by C. Benvenuti - F.
Carraresi Jr.) Globo is an Italian TV Channel and it could be the publisher of
this series.
CBS 96004 (Italy) - detail of rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Manuel García
Jara (second 1987 release)
The rear of the gatefold sleeve now has a
"CBS" logo at bottom right, although it still has "CBS/Sony" on the spine. The
text at the bottom left rear of the gatefold sleeve is the same as that of Lars'
1987 copy above. The inner gatefold is again identical. The records have red CBS labels and the
copies shown have the same
handwritten matrix numbers as
Lars' copy above:
Side 1 - CI 96004-1L 13-10-87, Side 2 - CI 96004-2L 13-10-87,
Side 3 - CI 96004-3L 13-10-87, Side 4 - CI 96004-4L 13-10-87 (pressing data again 13 Oct 1987).

further information and scans. Thanks also to Dag Braathen for finding an

Sergio Mariano Romay's copy of this release has two stickers: one on the
front with text "2 LPs Incluye Poster Gigante A Color y Libreto de 16
Páginas [Two Record Set Including Giant Colour Poster and 16 Page Booklet]",
one on the rear with the price: (1000 pesetas) and the name of the record
shop (El Corte Inglés). Lars M. Banke's copy has the same
sticker design and Spanish text but printed with black text at front bottom
left instead of a sticker.
The records were made in Spain and have orange/yellow CBS labels.

Manuel García Jara has a second Spanish set
bought from new in 1980 in Ulm (West Germany).
Manuel's records have a variant of the labels with longer circumference text. The text "Impusto de lujo a metalico - permiso
num. 7053" has been added.
The records of the copy shown have
matrix numbers: Side 1 - 96004 A, Side 2 - BL-36068-2A, Side 3 - AL-36069-2B,

a copy of Bob Dylan At Budokan made in Spain for export to Portugal with
"SPA" (Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores) instead of "SGAE"
on the record labels to the right of the centre hole. This album will be added
when located.

"Bob Dylan At Budokan - stereo 2LP reissue set, CBS/Sony 467850 1 (Spain),
1991:
Dylan albums for the
CBS/Sony label
were released in the last days of vinyl
in Spain. For this reason, those albums were made in very limited quantities
and, although they were sold in the "Nice Price" series, they often are the
rarest and most expensive copies of each album to collect nowadays. ("CBS"
had changed to "Columbia" everywhere else worldwide but did not yet own the
rights to the "Columbia" name in Spain.)

This album was bought in Spain in the 1990s. It has a single
sleeve that holds both records, not the usual gatefold,

printed in Spain by Offset ALG, but looks as if it has been sourced from
Holland, with Dutch information blacked out in three places on the rear as
shown. The records have CBS/Sony red labels dated 1991. They were made in Spain by Tecnodisco
S.A. for Sony Music, Castellana 93, 28046 Madrid. These records are exactly
the same as those found in the album with a Canadian gatefold sleeve also bought in Spain in the

These releases were made
in Rhodesia by The Gramophone Record Co. (Pty), part of EMI, and
the 1979 gatefold sleeve was printed there by Belmont Printers, Bulawayo.
The front of the gatefold sleeve has a sticker with the text "SPECIAL PRICE

include the usual poster nor the song lyrics printed on inner sleeves. |

The
rear of the gatefold sleeve has the CBS logo, catalogue number and Belmont
code "4-D2" plus "125". (Belmont Printers used codes starting with "4" for
sleeves they printed for CBS Records, they used other codes for other record
companies.) The inner gatefold sleeve also includes the CBS catalogue number.
The
Rhodesian records have white CBS labels with
blue text and the CBS logo in a box, copyrighted 1978 and 1979.
This design of labels was used in Rhodesia from late 1976 until 1980. Like the South African release, track
5 on Side 3 is misprinted as "All Alone The Watchtower".

The later 1980s
release after the country became Zimbabwe does not have a gatefold-sleeve and
the labels are now the standard orange/yellow CBS design. The rear sleeve
has the CBS logo, catalogue number and Belmont code "4-E2" this time
plus "125" again. The records were made in Zimbabwe, again by The Gramophone
Record Co. (Pty). The records of the copy shown have
handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBCS 2335 AL 36068, Side 2 - SBCS 2335 BL

Gerd Rundel has a later Zimbabwe release
that comes inexplicably in the
same gatefold sleeve as Manuel's earlier Rhodesia copy with "4-D2"
on the rear.
This copy has a round sticker on the upper right side of the rear. This is a
record shop sticker from "Music", Old Mutual Arcade, Abercorn Street -
there were Abercorn Streets in Salisbury (now Harare) and Bulawayo, but Old
Mutual Arcade was in Harare.
Amusingly, unlike other "Music" stickers on these album pages, "Abercorn" is
misprinted as "Abercon". Like the
previous release, track
5 on Side 3 is again misprinted as "All Alone The Watchtower".
Additionally this copy has a new mistake on Side 4 -
track 2, Knockin'
On Heaven's Door, is misprinted as "Knocking'
On Heaven's Door". The records have handwritten
matrix numbers: Side 1 - SCBS 2335 AL 36068, Side 2 - SCBS 2335
BL 36068, Side 3 - SCBS 2335 AL 36069, Side 4 - BL 36069 (the
remainder is hard to read because of the very small run-out vinyl area).

"Bob Dylan At Budokan" - stereo 2LP set, CBS LP2S-83 (Mexico), 1979:
CBS LP2S-83 (Mexico) - front scan by Manuel García Jara |
This album was made
in Mexico. The front has a CBS logo and an
"Estereo Sonido 360"/arrows logo at top centre.
The gatefold sleeve is made from good quality card.
The album does not
include poster or booklet, but the lyrics in English are printed on inner
sleeves. The records have dark orange/light orange CBS labels, with song titles
translated into Spanish and the album bizarrely classified as "POP/COUNTRY". The translations into Spanish are
correct except Going, Going, Gone - "Se Va, Se Va, Se Fue" = "He's Going,
He's Going, He's Gone"; as the lyrics are "I'm Going,
I'm Going, I'm Gone", the correct translation is "Me Voy,
Me Voy, Me Fui". This mistake was originally from the
Gamma/Asylum Mexican release of Planet Waves! The
records of the copy shown have matrix numbers:
Side 1 - 0211-13709-1A, Side 2 -
0211-13710-1A, Side 3 -

These releases have the standard gatefold sleeve.
The song titles on the sleeve and record labels are in English only. There are
also inner sleeves with the English lyrics.
The first release stereo/mono 2LP set was made
for CBS in Brazil by Tapecar Gravaçôes in Rio de
Janeiro. The records of the first release have plain orange CBS labels
and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 138140-A, Side 2 - 138140-B,
Side 3 - 138141-A, Side 1: 138141-B. This is the last Dylan record worldwide to
be released with plain orange CBS labels, and surprisingly, the earlier
Brazilian release of
Street-Legal (Discos CBS
138.084) had orange/yellow labels. There was also a 1976 Brazilian release of
Highway 61 Revisited made by
Tapecar Gravaçôes, that had orange/yellow Discos
CBS record labels too. The album title is misspelled as "BON DYLAN AT BUDOKAN"
on the Side 1 and Side 2 record labels, but is correct on Sides 2 and 4.
However, track 2 on Side 4 is misspelled as
"KNOCKIN' ON REAVEN'S DOOR".
The second and third
release stereo/mono 2LP sets were made in Brazil by Discos CBS in Rio de
Janeiro. The records of the second release date from the mid-1980s and have
orange/yellow Discos CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 -
40AP-1100-A 138.140-A, Side 2 - 40AP-1100-B 138.140-B, Side 3 - 40AP-1101-A
138.141-A, Side 4 - 40AP-1101-B 138.141-B (the Japanese matrix numbers). The
album title is correct on all record labels, but Track 2 on Side 4 is still
misspelled as "KNOCKIN' ON REAVEN'S DOOR".
The records of the third release date from
after 1988 and have orange/yellow Discos CBS labels with a different
label design. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 -
138.140 A 40AP1100 A, Side 2 - 138.140 B 40AP1100 B, Side 3 - 138.141 A 40AP1101

This is the only Argentinean vinyl release to appear on the "Columbia" label
instead of "CBS". It has a unique front sleeve in that the entire
title "BOB DYLAN AT BUDOKAN" is situated at top right instead of "BOB DYLAN" and
"AT BUDOKAN" being separated at top left and top right. The album's inner sleeve has a unique purple tinge and the message from Bob Dylan (see
the UK release above) is translated into Spanish, as are the
song titles on the rear sleeve and the Columbia record labels. Love Minus Zero/No Limit is
rather lamely translated as "Por Siempre Tu Amor" [Forever Your
Love]. The promo copy has a white
sticker with "DISCO PARA DEMOSTRACION VENTA PROHIBIDA [DEMONSTRATION RECORD SALE
PROHIBITED]" on the rear sleeve and the text "DISCO PROMOCIONAL PROHIBIDA LA
VENTA [PROMOTIONAL RECORD SALE PROHIBITED]" printed on the record labels. The

The rear of the gatefold sleeve has the tracklist in Spanish and in
English. Three tracks have not been translated even though they are tracks
traditionally translated into Spanish in South America: Shelter From the Storm [Cobijo Contra La Tormenta], Blowin' In The
Wind [Soplando En El Viento] and The Times They Are A-Changin'' [Los Tiempos
Están Cambiando]. Other songs have been badly mistranslated: Like A Rolling Stone as
"Como Una Canción Rodada [Like A Rolling Song]", I Shall Be Released
as "Seré Publicado [I Shall Be Published]" (it's not possible
in Spanish for a person to be published!), All Along The
Watchtower as "Todos Al Frente De La Torre Del Reloj [All People In Front Of
The Clock Tower] and It's Alright, Ma as "Está Bien, Ma".
The records have orange/yellow CBS labels. The song titles are again translated
into Spanish and there is
a mistake in an English title on Side 4 - Forever Young is listed as "Foverer Young".
The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - COL C2L-10 DISCO 1 A
27-8-79, Side 2 - COL C2L-10 DISCO 1 B
27-8-79, Side 3 - COL C2L-10 DISCO 2 A

1979 on all four sides).

the booklet as the UK release, but Manuel's copy does not have the poster. The records were pressed in Yugoslavia by Jugoton,
also
of Zagreb. They have
orange/yellow CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - ULS
614-1, Side 2 - ULS 614-2, Side 3 - ULS 615-1, Side 4 - ULS 615-2.

The Yugoslavian copy owned by Tom Willems does have
a poster, but it is much smaller than the poster with his Dutch copy. A
photo of the two is shown for comparison. Thanks to Manuel García Jara
and Tom Willems for information and scans.

"Bob Dylan At Budokan - 2CD promo and commercial
releases, CBS/Sony 48DP 1085-86 (Japan), 21 Nov 1987, reissued 1989:
The 1987 CBS/Sony set comes in a
double-width jewel
case
with a white, red and yellow obi
with red and black text and price ¥4,800
(this was before sales tax was introduced in Japan - the "48" in the catalogue
number indicates the price).
The rear insert has the date "O-11-21" (21 Nov 1987). The 1987 copy shown is a promo with a promo panel on the rear insert and
promo text in Japanese in the centre of the two CDs. There is a 36-page stapled
booklet in English and Japanese. The CDs are silver with red panels and black
text. The set was reissued in 1989 after the introduction of sales tax with a
new price on the obi of
¥4,511 (¥4,380
plus sales tax).

The 1991 Columbia release still comes in a double-width 2CD jewel case with
the CBS front insert, but apart from the rear insert the artwork and CDs are as
my 1996 copy shown. The 1996 Columbia release comes in a single-width jewel case with a
clear 2CD tray and
a "Nice Price" sticker.
The front insert is the 36-page booklet.
The 1996 rear insert is double-sided with an inside picture. For some reason
Columbia France had a different CD pressing with an error: "Love Minus
Zero/No Limit" is wrongly titled "Medley: No Limit/Love Minus Zero"!

"Bob Dylan At Budokan - 2CD set release, Columbia CDCBS 96004 (Australia), 1991
(two releases):
Columbia CDCBS 96004 (Australia) - front of booklet, scan by
Stuart Moore (first release) |
Stuart Moore's 1991 copy must be the first CD release
in Australia. It has Columbia CDs but CBS inserts, as well as the booklet. Both CDs list all the 22 tracks and are only distinguished by
either "1-CDCBS-96004" or "2-CDCBS-96004" in the inner rings. There is a
bizarre mistake in the track listing - track 3, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, is
just listed as "Love Minus Zero", but there is a track 23 "No Limit" at the
end! The CDs play correctly and CD2 does not actually have a track 23.

Bill Hester has a
later Australian release of Columbia CDCBS 96004 where the CDs correctly
list tracks 1-11 on CD1 and 12-22 on CD2. The CDs were manufactured in Australia, but the inserts are
from the European release and were printed in Holland as above. Scan of CD2
required!

"Bob Dylan At Budokan -
2CD set release, Columbia 2-036067 (Brazil), 2002:
For the MTV Unplugged release in this series which contains Love Minus
Zero/No Limit, not on the US release. see
1995. It has a single width 2CD jewel case. The album packaging is minimal, with
just the front picture and track listings, no other album artwork.
The front and rear inserts are plain on the reverse, with the front of the
insert having a black border and the Compact Disc logo. The CDs are plain
silver with just the title, no track listings as on the UK CDs above.
Thanks
to Alexandre Froemming for this set!

(USA)/Europe) - detail of outside of card sleeve
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album
Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke
Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card
sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set
of previously released non-album tracks entitled
Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and
The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album,
also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set
Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George
Jackson (Acoustic version),
R-0085, see
1971. The set is
therefore listed in 2013.
The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and
previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves.
Bob Dylan At Budokan comes in a folded card sleeve with the pockets for the
CDs on the inside centre. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the
US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown.
The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK21"
plus "DISCS 24&25".
This double album has been remastered, so is the sixth Dylan album remastered
for this project. The CDs are different in detail, the US
Bob Dylan At Budokan CDs have
catalogue numbers "88691924312D24" and "88691924312D25", whereas
the European CDs have catalogue numbers "88691924312-24" and "88691924312-25".
The European CDs were made in the EU (probably Austria).
The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs,
and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I
haven't shown them for the later CDs.

details of the set, see
