(1976)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

The LP version is shorter than the current CD, which has more applause between songs. On the LP the tracks are presented as nine separate songs, on the CD it is one continuous programme (Europe/Australia - 51:17, USA - 51:19, Japan - 51:20).

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information.

Vinyl and Tape Releases

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo vinyl promo and commercial LP releases, Columbia PC 34349 (USA), 13 Sep 1976 (two variants), Columbia JC 34349 (USA), 1980s:

Columbia PC 34349 (USA), 13 Sep 1976 (first variant):

HardRainUSPromoFront.jpg (20370 bytes)
Columbia PC 34349 (USA) - promo LP with timing strip, front photo by Ulf Gyllenspetz (first variant)

The white label promo album shown has a radio station timing strip on the front and a gold embossed stamp with "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" on the back. Phill Townsend's promo copy has white Columbia labels with the tracklisting left aligned, and the record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349-1A, Side 2 - BL 34349-1A. Manuel García Jara has a radio station copy with a "WLCR" sticker on the front sleeve, a gold "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" embossed stamp on the rear sleeve, and "WRLC" written on the rear sleeve and record labels in black marker pen. The record has Columbia commercial labels with the same design as Phill Townsend's white label promo labels with the tracklist left aligned. There are no producer credits. It has the same matrix numbers as Phill's copy: Side 1 - AL 34349-1A, Side 2 - BL 34349-1A. "WLCR" and "WRLC" are both US radio stations - "WLCR" is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting from Louisville, KY, while "WRLC" is a non-commercial education radio station based at Lycoming College serving Williamsport, PA. On Side 2 the song title Idiot Wind has been crossed out, perhaps indicating that it was not to be played on air! The record is in a plain purple inner sleeve with just the number "34349" at bottom centre.

Jonas Ruthenberg has a regular commercial copy of the first release without the promo stamp on the rear sleeve and without any markings on the record labels. The record of this copy comes in the purple inner sleeve and has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349-1H, Side 2 - BL 34349-1A.

Paul Melone's commercial copy (variant not yet known) has two front stickers. The first has text "9 New Live Cuts with the Rolling Thunder Revue", the second looks like a store sticker.

Columbia PC 34349 (USA), 13 Sep 1976 (second variant):

Columbia PC 34349 (USA) - promo LP front scan by Gerd Rundel (1976 release, second variant)

Gerd Rundel's second variant promo copy has a timing strip on the front sleeve and the same gold "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" embossed stamp on the rear sleeve as Manuel's first release copy. The record has white Columbia labels in a slightly different type face, a bigger "BOB DYLAN" and with the tracklisting centred. There are again no producer credits. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349-1F, Side 2 - BL 34349-1F. The second variant commercial album has red Columbia labels with a large "BOB DYLAN" and centred tracklist like the second white label variant.

Columbia PC 34349 (USA), 1970s (third variant):

Columbia PC 34349 (USA) - commercial LP front with stickers, scan by Gerd Rundel (third 1970s release)

This third 1970s record label variant comes in the same sleeve as Gerd Rundel's "JC 34349" copy below (with a barcode on the rear and "PC 34349" on the spine). The labels have the producer credit below the song titles as the "JC 34349" copy below (missing from the earlier two 1970s variants) but the catalogue number to the left of the centre hole is still "PC 34349". The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349-G1A, Side 2 - BL 34349 G2A.

Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for finding a copy on eBay bought from Sears with these record labels and a unique front sticker advertising "4 Selections from the 'Hard Rain TV Special' and other performances with the Rolling Thunder Revue".

Columbia JC 34349 (USA), 1980s:

Columbia JC 34349 (USA) - detail of commercial LP Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (1980s release)

Columbia JC 34349 (USA) - commercial LP Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (1980s release)

Gerd Rundel's 1980s copy comes in a sleeve which still has “PC 34349” printed on the spine but the record labels have “JC 34349”. The rear sleeve is different because it has a barcode at top right. To accommodate this the tracklist for Side 2 is printed under the tracklist for Side 1 instead of in the top right hand corner. The record labels now have catalogue number "JC 34349" to the left of the centre hole, and producer credits under the song titles as the third 1970s variant. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349-2K, Side 2 - BL 34349-2J, plus “COLUMBIA NY” stamped on each side of the record.

Thanks to Ulf Gyllenspetz, Stuart Moore, Gerd Rundel, Jeremy Mayle, Phill Townsend, Manuel García Jara and Paul Melote for information and pictures.

This US release was also exported to Europe. At the bottom of the rear sleeve “Columbia” is obscured with black marker pen in two places. It comes with the original plain purple inner sleeve with small number “34349” at centre bottom as shown above. The ring of Columbia logos on the record labels is obscured by black ring-shaped stickers. The black sticker is missing on the Side 2 label of this copy but you can still see the traces of it. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349-1F, Side 2 - BL 34349-1C.

Lars M. Banke's export copy has several small differences as detailed. He says: "COLUMBIA is obscured with black pen in three places on the rear sleeve like Gerd's copy. I think it is "handmade" because there are minor differences. For instance there is a tiny part of the "C" in COLUMBIA on Gerd's copy in the lower left corner of the rear sleeve which is not on my copy. Secondly, I do not think that this one is like the other export copies with glued-on stickers on the labels. I think that these ones were "painted" or printed on. It is almost possible to see the name COLUMBIA and the logo through the black colour and you cannot feel any "edge" between "the sticker" and the labels." Indeed, the black ink looks partially worn off.

Peter Rice has a US copy bought in Glasgow, Scotland, on 21 Sep 1976 at the time of release with six yellow stickers covering the ring of "Columbia" logos on the labels. "Columbia" is not obscured on the rear of the record sleeve. The record comes in a plain white inner sleeve.

Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is split between programs 1 and 2, while I Threw It All Away is split between programs 3 and 4. As the tracks are faded out and faded in, these are classed as rarities and listed in 1976.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo cassette releases, Columbia PCT 34349 (USA), Sep 1976, re-released early 1980s, mid 1980s:

Columbia PCT 34349 (USA) - outside of cassette insert including listing of Blood On The Tracks, scan by Gerd Rundel (1976 release)

Columbia PCT 34349 (USA) - inside of cassette insert including listing of The Basement Tapes, scan by Gerd Rundel (1976 release)

Columbia PCT 34349 (USA) - cassette Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (1976 release)

Columbia PCT 34349 (USA) - cassette Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (1976 release)

Columbia PCT 34349 (USA) - cassette top scan by Gerd Rundel (1976 release)

Columbia PCT 34349 (USA) - end of cassette case, scan by Gerd Rundel (1976 release)

The first cassette release from 1976 has a folded insert which does not have a barcode. The outside and inside of the insert have details of other Columbia US artists cassette releases (Blood On The Tracks and The Basement Tapes are also listed). The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels, and “34349” is stamped on the top of the cassette. There is a Columbia sticker with dark red text on the end of the black cassette case.

Columbia PCT 34349 (USA) - cassette insert scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release - "BOB DYLAN" in pink)
The early 1980s release has minimal artwork with a barcode on the rear of the insert. The reverse of the insert is blank. Because it has a barcode, while the first two cassette releases of Desire from 1976 don't, I'm dating the first of the releases with a barcode as early 1980s and the second as mid 1980s. The first Columbia US Dylan cassette to have a barcode on first release was Saved in 1980.

The mid 1980s release insert has "BOB DYLAN" in pink. The cassette is again light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The mid 1980s release insert has "BOB DYLAN" in red but is otherwise the same. The cassette is transparent "smoked" grey with white text printed directly on it, there are again no paper labels.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Tom Willems for information and scans.

Bob Dylan - "Hard Rain"/Bryan Ferry - "Let's Stick Together" - radio station stereo vinyl LP, AFRTS (American Forces Radio & Television Service) RL 41-6/P-16315-16 (USA), 1976:

AFRTS RL 41-6/P-16315 (USA) - front scan by Lars M. Banke
This very rare radio station LP has three songs from the Hard Rain album on Side 1, and songs from Bryan Ferry's 1976 album Let's Stick Together on Side 2.
AFRTS RL 41-6/P-16316 (USA) - rear scan by Lars M. Banke

AFRTS RL 41-6/P-16315 (USA) - Side 1 scan by Lars M. Banke (Dylan)

AFRTS RL 41-6/P-16316 (USA) - Side 2 scan by
Lars M. Banke (no Dylan)

Island ILPS 9367 (UK) - front picture from www.discogs.com (no Dylan)

It came in a plain white paper sleeve. The Dylan songs are: Shelter From The Storm; Maggie's Farm; You're A Big Girl Now.

For other 1970s albums in the same AFRTS series with Bob Dylan on one side and different artists on the other, see International Albums (Various Artist Compilations) 1970s. The 1978 AFRTS single LP release of Bob Dylan At Budokan (RL 21-9/P-18371-72) is not listed there because all tracks on both sides are by Bob Dylan. For that see the Bob Dylan At Budokan page in this section. For a 1981 AFRTS album with Bob Dylan and Art Garfunkel, see International Albums (Various Artists Compilations) 1980-86. For an AFRTS single LP release of The Concert For Bangladesh by George Harrison and Friends, see 1972.

Columbia PC 34349 (Canada) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (second variant with producer credits)

The first Canadian release has “MANUFACTURED BY COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA” on the rear sleeve and the record labels, plus “LITHO IN CANADA” on the spine. The record has red Columbia labels like the second US variant with centred song titles but without producer credits. The record of Gerd Rundel's first variant copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1:  AL-34349-1A-2BD:, Side 2:  BL-34349-1A-2BD:.

The second Canadian release has "MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD" on the rear sleeve and record labels, plus “LITHO IN CANADA” again on the spine. The record has red Columbia labels like the third US variant with centred song titles but this time with producer credits. The record of Gerd Rundel's second variant has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1:  AL-34349-1C-20BD:, Side 2:  BL-34349-1C-2BD.

Columbia PC 34349 (Canada for export) - Side 2 with black ring-shaped sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (second copy)

All three of these copies have sleeves with "MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD", so they were made after the company name change in late 1976.

Lars M. Banke has a copy of the second variant of the Canadian release bought in Sweden with a Swedish seal across the sleeve opening and black ring-shaped stickers obscuring the Columbia logos on the record labels ("MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD" is still visible). The Swedish text says that if the seal is broken the album will be replaced only if it was faulty when bought (see the 1973 Dylan album page in this section for a picture of it). Only the Side record label is shown.

Lars M. Banke has a second export copy of the Canadian release PC 34349 (the second label variant with producer credits) bought in Scandinavia that has had the "Columbia" logos on the rear and spine of the sleeve obscured with black circular stickers. The CBS Records Canada information at the bottom of the rear sleeve is not obscured. On the record labels there are black ring-shaped stickers over the ring of "Columbia" logos.

The third export copy of the Canadian PC 34349 (again the second label variant with producer credits) has “Columbia” erased on the rear sleeve at bottom right and white ring-shaped stickers on the record labels covering the ring of "Columbia" logos. Again, the CBS Records Canada information at the bottom of the rear sleeve is not obscured. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349 1A 2BD, Side 2 - BL 34349 1B 2 DB.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo cassette releases, Columbia PCT 34349 (Canada), 1976; Columbia WPCT 34349 (Canada), late 1970s:

Columbia PCT 34349 (Canada), 1976:

Columbia PCT 34349 (Canada) - front picture by Gerd Rundel
This is probably the first Canadian cassette release. It has "CBS Records of Canada Limited" on the cassette labels. The cassette is light grey with yellow paper labels. There is a remote possibility that there was an earlier cassette release with "Columbia Records of Canada Ltd." like the very first Canadian LP release above.

More scans of this release required.

Columbia WPCT 34349 (Canada), late 1970s:

Columbia WPCT 34349 (Canada) - outside of cassette insert scan by Manuel García Jara (inside is blank)
This later cassette release from the 1970s has a different short insert which does not have a barcode. The inside of the insert is blank. The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels, and “MADE IN CANADA” is embossed on Side 2 of the cassette only.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS S 86016 (UK), Sep 1976, re-released 1976-77, late 1970s; reissue CBS 32308 (UK), early 1980s (twice), 1984, late 1980s:

CBS S 86016 (UK), Sep 1976:

CBS S 86016 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Kenneth Robson (1976 release - PPL "Oxford Street" address on right)

The sleeve of the original 1976 release was printed in England by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd. The record comes in a card inner sleeve with the catalogue number. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels.

Phonographic Performance Ltd. (PPL), the UK music licensing company and performance rights organisation, moved from Oxford Street in London to Ganton Street in 1977. The original 1976 release of the album therefore has the Oxford Street address at the bottom of the rear sleeve, and releases after 1977 have the Ganton Street address in that position.

These copies are in the same sleeve as above with the PPL Oxford Street address at bottom rear. The records also come in an original plain purple card inner sleeve with the catalogue number “86016” at bottom.

CBS S 86016 (UK) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (second 1976-77 release)

The record labels now have the producer credit below the song titles (missing on the previous record labels), and both have “MADE IN ENGLAND” at the bottom of their labels. The "LC|0149" code is not yet included on the labels of the first copy. The record of the first copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 86016 A2, Side 2 - CBS S 86016 B1. The record labels of the second copy shown now have the "LC|0149" code to the left of the centre hole on the bottom text line. The record of the second copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-86016-A-4, Side 2 - CBS-S-86016-B-4.

CBS S 86016 (UK), late 1970s:

CBS S 86016 (UK) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1970s release)

CBS S 86016 (UK) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1970s release - CBS copyright info at bottom)

CBS S 86016 (UK) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1970s release)

This copy of the late 1970s release comes in the same sleeve as Kenneth Robson's 1976 copy above, still with the PPL Oxford Street address at the bottom of the rear. This time the record comes in a plain white inner sleeve. The labels now have CBS copyright info at the bottom and “MADE IN ENGLAND” in the circumference text to the right of the centre hole. "LC|0149" in a capsule is again to the left of the centre hole below the stereo arrows. The record shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-86016-A-4 (handwritten), 32308 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS-S-86016-B-4 (handwritten), 32308 (stamped). There is probably a variant before this with “MADE IN ENGLAND” in the circumference text but there is no text at the bottom of the record labels.

CBS 32308 (UK), early 1980s (three variants):

CBS 32308 (UK) - front scan by Kenneth Robson (all 1980s releases)

The 1980s releases had a new catalogue number, CBS 32308. The sleeve was again printed in England by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd. The rear sleeve of the 1980s releases had the current UK anti-piracy logo with the message "HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC" (taping on to cassette was much less prevalent in 1976).

The early 1980s records again have orange/yellow CBS labels but with a different text layout from that of 1976. The arrows logo below "STEREO" has disappeared.

CBS 32308 (UK) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 1)

CBS 32308 (UK) - inner sleeve rear scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 1)

CBS 32308 (UK) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 2, "MADE IN ENGLAND in circumference text)

CBS 32308 (UK) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 2)

CBS 32308 (UK) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 3)

CBS 32308 (UK) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 3 - CBS copyright info at bottom)

CBS 32308 (UK) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 3 - same as variant 2)

CBS 32308 (UK) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 3 - same as variant 2, "MADE IN ENGLAND still in circumference text)

CBS 32308 (UK) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1980s release variant 3)

CBS 32308 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (all 1980s releases - PPL "Ganton Street" address on right)

Gerd Rundel's early 1980s release with orange/yellow record labels (variant 1) has a completely different text layout from that of Gerd's later copy (variant 2), for example:

The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1:  CBS-S-86016-A-4 (handwritten), 32308 (stamped), Side 2:  CBS-S-86016-B-4 (handwritten), 32308 (stamped). It came in the "Surprise!/Surprised?" "NICE PRICE" inner sleeve shown above. The record labels of Gerd Rundel's later copy have the same text layout as the 1984 release with red CBS labels, but without the CBS copyright info at the bottom. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32308 (stamped), CBS S 86016 A1 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS-S-86016-B-4 (handwritten), 32308 (stamped).

Gerd Rundel's third variant of the early 1980s UK release comes in a sleeve that is the same as for all other 1980s releases (the PPL “Ganton Street” address at bottom rear). The record comes in a plain white inner sleeve. The record labels look the same as those of the variant 2 copy except for the CBS copyright info at the bottom. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-86016-A-4 (handwritten), 32308 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS-S-86016-B-4 (handwritten), 32308 (stamped).

CBS 32308 (UK), 1984, late 1980s:

CBS 32308 (UK) - inner sleeve front scan by Gerd Rundel (1984 release)

The album was released again in 1984 with the same sleeve. The record now has red CBS labels and comes in an original white “NICE PRICE” inner sleeve showing details of other CBS releases in the series. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 86016-A4, 32308-A4 (handwritten), Side 2 - CBS-S-86016-B-4 (handwritten), 32308 (stamped).

The album was released yet again in the late 1980s with the same sleeve. The record again has red CBS labels and comes in an original “NICE PRICE” inner sleeve showing details of other CBS releases in the series, this time black. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-86016-A4, 32308-A4 (handwritten), Side 2 - CBS S 86016 B1, 32308 (stamped). The only differences that I can see between the 1984 and the late 1980s record labels are that the white CBS copyright information at the bottom of the 1984 label has been moved to the circumference text of the late 1980s label, which is now a much bolder white.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge release, CBS 42-86016 (UK), Sep 1976:

CBS 42-86016 (UK) - front of slipcase, scan by André Wilbers

The UK 8-track release had a white cartridge and came in a black slipcase. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is split between programs 1 and 2, while I Threw It All Away is split between programs 3 and 4. As the tracks are faded out and faded in, these are classed as rarities and listed in 1976.

Ronald Born has a CBS UK catalogue from 1977-78 that also lists a UK 8-track stereo tape cartridge release, CBS 42-86016. Scans required!

CBS 40-86016 (UK), 1976, re-released late 1970s:

CBS 40-86016 (UK) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (both releases)
This first release with the original catalogue number has a unique grey/brown front to the insert. The cassette is black with orange CBS paper labels with black text. It was reissued later in the 1970s with the same insert but with a different cassette, which is now light-grey with black text printed directly on it, there are no paper labels.

This 1980s re-release has the new catalogue number introduced in 1982. It has minimal artwork and a light-grey cassette with black text printed directly on it, there are no paper labels, the same as that of the late 1970s release. The "NICE PRICE" sticker now on the inside of the insert was originally on the outside of the cassette case!

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS 86016 (NL), Sep 1976, reissued 1978; CBS 32308 (NL/France), 1984-85:

CBS 86016 (NL), 1976 (two variants):

CBS 86016 (NL) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (all releases)

The original Dutch release of CBS 86016 had a sleeve printed by Shorepak in Holland and a lyrics insert sheet. The record had orange/yellow CBS labels and a grey/lilac paper inner sleeve with the catalogue number at lower front centre. Hans Seegers has a copy of the first release where the labels omit the text "Produced by Don DeVito and Bob Dylan". This was a misprint and was corrected by CBS. Simon Blokker's demo copy has labels without the production credits and a stamp on Side 2 in Dutch "niet voor de verkoop [not for sale]" including a CBS logo.

Kenneth Robson's second release copy comes in a sleeve that does not have any symbols on the rear at top right. My second release copy comes in a sleeve that has a "Y" in a circle at top right (this may be a price code). The record of my second release copy has the same labels as Kenneth Robson's with the production credits and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-86016-3A-2, Side 2 - S-86016-3B-3.

Both 1986 releases of the album came with a double-sided lyrics insert.

CBS 86016 (NL), 1978:

CBS 86016 (NL) - rear scan by Gerd Rundel (third release)
Gerd Rundel has a copy of this album bought as part of a French set from 1978 with Blood On The Tracks and Desire, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 1970s. The set has an outer sleeve to hold all three albums that was printed in France, although the records themselves were made in Holland. The rear of the album sleeve has "Y" in a white circle at top right as my second release copy with an additional "III" in a green circle (perhaps a different price code). "LC|0149" in a green capsule is now at bottom left, missing from the 1976 sleeves. The record in this set has orange/yellow labels, with a star above the side number to the right of the centre hole. The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-86016-1A1, Side 2 - S-86016-1-B1.

The record of my copy comes in a plain sleeve, but this record comes in an inner sleeve printed with the lyrics that has exactly the same design as the lyrics insert, which is also present and the same as shown above.  Simon Blokker has a Dutch Hard Rain copy that has “Y” in a white circle at top right of the rear sleeve, but unlike Gerd Rundel's copy from the French set it has "54" in a green circle below it. "LC|0149" in a green capsule is at bottom right as shown for Gerd's copy. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with a star above the side number to the right (*) of the centre hole. This copy has an inner sleeve printed with the lyrics as shown and the stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 – S-86016-2A-2, Side 2 – S-86016-1-B1.

CBS 32308 (NL/France/Sweden), 1984-5 (two releases):

CBS 32308 (NL/France) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (all releases)

This album was re-released in Holland in the mid-late 1980s with a new catalogue number, CBS 32308, first with orange/yellow record labels, and then with red record labels, both in the same sleeve. These Dutch releases were also distributed in France. The front sleeve was the same as CBS 86016. Differences from the earlier rear sleeves are as shown.

Ronald Born's record had orange/yellow CBS labels and came in a plain inner sleeve. This copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-86016-3A-2, Side 2 - 01-86016-1B-1. Gerd Rundel's record had red CBS labels with a completely different design to the right of the centre hole and came in an original “NICE PRICE” inner sleeve. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-32308-A (handwritten), S-86016-1A-2 (stamped), Side 2 - 01-32308-B (handwritten), S-86016-1B-1 (stamped).

Thanks to "Isis 160" for information that this release was specially remastered by Steve Berkowitz for Music On Vinyl, the first time this album has been remixed or remastered. The sound quality of this release is therefore the best that's currently available, better than any of the CD releases below. There is a very hard to scan gold foil front sticker. The record has 1970s-style Columbia labels. The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 89852 1 A MOVLP 345, Side 2 -89852 1 B MOVLP 345.

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information that the 2017 Columbia/Legacy release is actually a reissue of the 2011 Music On Vinyl release with different text at the bottom of the rear sleeve and on the record labels. The handwritten record matrix numbers are similar to those of the 2011 Music On Vinyl release: Side 1 - 89852 A MOVLP 345, Side 2 - 89 852 B MOVLP 345.

On the Side 2 label You're A Big Girl Now is incorrectly titled "Yo're A Big Girl Now". The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SCI 86016 o 1L/2  ("o" = small circle); Side 2 - SCI 86016 2L  ("" = rhombus symbol). Side 1 has a stamped mastering date of "17/9/76" as well as the matrix number while Side 2 has "16/9/76".

Lars M. Banke has a copy with the same outer and inner sleeves where the record labels have just "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" instead "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR". The text is still aligned as if "SUGAR" were present. The Side 1 label does not have an Italian copyright organisation “SIAE” stamp.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

CBS S 86016 (Spain), Nov 1976:

CBS S 86016 (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara

This album was released in Spain in Nov 1976 and entered the Spanish album charts on 27 Nov 1976. It reached #11 on 10 Jan 1977. It was the first to be released by Discos CBS from their new address of Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16 and had the first sleeve to be printed by Indugraf instead of Offset ALG.

The sleeve is fully laminated without the CBS logo on the front. The rear sleeve has the CBS logo at bottom right. It does not mention that Mick Ronson plays guitar on "Maggie's Farm" as other international releases of this album do, nor the ASCAP copyright (a detail of the Dutch sleeve is shown for comparison). The spine and record labels have the translated title "Fuerte Lluvia". This album has a lyrics sheet in English with the new lyrics of "Lay, Lady, Lay". The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with the album title in Spanish and song titles in Spanish and English. Shelter From The Storm is correctly translated as "Cobijo Contra La Tormenta", while all the Spanish editions of Blood On The Tracks have the incorrect translation of "Cobijo Contra La Lluvia [Shelter From The Rain]". The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349-1A, Side 2 - BL 34349-1A ("34349" is the US catalogue number).

It has a unique catalogue number, 55822. The sleeve was printed by Indugraf and is not laminated. On the front it has the CBS logo and "ESPECIAL" at bottom left, and on the rear sleeve at bottom right the old catalogue number "S 86016" is greyed out. The lyrics sheet is missing, but the album has a coloured inner sleeve with small white text "Edición especial para El Círculo de Lectores" on the rear.

The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with "ESPECIAL" above "BOB DYLAN" and the album title, as well as the new catalogue number. The album title is translated as "Fuerte Lluvia" on the record labels and the sleeve spine, which also has the new catalogue number. The record of the copy shown has the same matrix numbers as above: Side 1 - AL 34349-1A, Side 2 - BL 34349-1A.

CBS 32308 (Spain) - Side 2 scan by Lars M. Banke (variant 2 - short circumference text)

CBS 32308 (Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Simon Blokker (printed by Indugraf, Discos CBS address is still "Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16")

These 1980s copies have the new catalogue number "CBS 32308" on the rear sleeve at bottom right. The sleeve was again printed by Indugraf. The bottom text is the same as that of the Spanish 1976 release, and the Discos CBS address from the 1970s has not been changed (it should by now be "Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046-Madrid"). Manuel's record (not shown) has exactly the same labels as the 1976 copy above, still with catalogue number "CBS S 86016", and this copy has the same matrix numbers as above: Side 1 - AL 34349-1A, Side 2 - BL 34349-1A.

The records of Lars' copies now have labels with "CBS 32308". The layout is similar to that of the 1976 labels. There are two variants, on variant 2 the circumference text is shorter because "Impuesto de lujo a metalico - Permiso Num. 5053" is missing. The records of both these copies have new stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32308 A, Side 2 - 32308 B.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara, Simon Blokker, Lars M. Banke and Peter Oudejans for information and scans.

CBS
40-86016 (Spain) - cassette Side 1 scan by Manuel García Jara (second release)

CBS 40-86016 (Spain) - cassette Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (second release)

The first Spanish cassette release of this album is the rarest. The insert was printed by a rare printer, Gráficas Macaypa, Madrid, and it has the first CBS Spain address (Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13) on the inside of the insert. This is an error in that it was released after the CBS Spain address changed to Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16 (the address was correct on the LP sleeve above). The cassette is black with orange CBS paper labels.

"Shelter From The Storm" on Spanish releases of the album Hard Rain always had the correct Spanish translation as "Cobijo contra la tormenta" (on both records and cassettes), but this track on the Spanish release of the album Blood On The Tracks was wrongly translated as "Cobijo contra la lluvia [Shelter From the Rain]"!

The second cassette was also released in 1976. The insert was printed by the usual printer Indugraf and now has the correct CBS Spain address on the inside. The orange CBS paper labels look identical to those of the previous release.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

CBS 86016 (Portugal) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1976 release)

These releases were manufactured in Portugal. The two sleeves appear identical. The album is unusual in that Bob's name isn't on the record labels except in the song credits (it should presumably be above the centre hole).

The 1976 record comes in a coloured inner sleeve without text.

CBS 86016 (Portugal) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (1980s release)

The 1976 record has orange/yellow CBS labels, the colours on both sides being the same. On Side 1 Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again has a minimal gap between the two lines of the song title. On Side 2 Shelter From The Storm is spelled correctly, unlike on the 1980s Side 2 label. The 1976 record shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349-2B, Side 2 - BL 34349-2A.

The 1980s record also has orange/yellow CBS labels, the colour on Side 2 is noticeably stronger than on Side 1. The copyright text round the bottom edges is completely different from the 1976 record labels. On Side 1 Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again has a wide gap between the two lines of the song title. On Side 2 Shelter From The Storm is misspelled "Shelther From The Storm". The record shown has both handwritten and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-86016-A (handwritten) AL 34349-2B (stamped, USA matrix number), Side 2 - CBS-86016-B (handwritten)  BL 34349-2A (stamped, USA matrix number).

CBS 86016 (Greece) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
This release was made in Greece for Diski CBS A.E.B.E., Athens. There is a "Y" in a circle at top right of the rear sleeve, similar to the codes on Dutch sleeves. There is Greek text on both the rear sleeve and the record labels. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels. Unusually this copy has no matrix numbers.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS 86016 (Yugoslavia), 1976, re-released 1978, 1981:

CBS 86016 (Yugoslavia) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (all releases)
These releases were manufactured by Suzy Records of Zagreb (now Croatia) on behalf of CBS. The Yugoslav text on the 1976 and 1978 rear sleeves is different from the text on the 1981 sleeve, as shown below. The records have orange/yellow CBS labels in four designs. The first three label designs have music publisher credits below the song titles and circumference text "PRESSED BY JUGOTON|SUZY RECORD PRODUCTION|MADE IN YUGOSLAVIA" at the bottom - Jugoton was also based in Zagreb; the fourth label design from 1981 omits the music publisher credits and just has "SUZY RECORDS PRODUCTION" at the bottom.

The record of the 1976 copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-86106-1A1, Side 2 - S-86106-1B1.

The reissue of 1978 is virtually identical to the 1976 release: it has an identical sleeve and almost identical record labels - there is only a slight difference: "ULS-264" is above "STRANA 1/2" instead of below. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - ULS-264-1 4278 MK ("4278" = "4 Feb 1978"), Side 2 - S-86016-1-B1.

Lars M. Banke has what may be a label variant of the 1978 release, with "STRANA 1/2" now on the left. The record comes in the same sleeve as the 1976 and first 1978 releases. The matrix numbers are: Side 1 - ULS 264 1 (handwritten), Side 2 - S-86016-1-B1 (stamped).

The third release record labels are dated "1981" to the right of the centre hole, and have "SIDE 1/2" on the left of the centre hole instead of "STRANA 1/2". The copy of the 1981 record shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side - 86106-A I MG, Side 2 - 86106-B I MG.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo vinyl LPs, CBS SBP 234880 (Australia), 1976; CBS SBP 4480 (Australia), late 1970s:

CBS SBP 234880/SBP 4880 (Australia) - front scan by Stuart Moore

Both releases of this album come in the same outer sleeve and a coloured inner sleeve with the text "SBP 234880". The records have orange/yellow CBS labels, the first has catalogue number "SBP 234880" and the second has "SBP 4880" only. The copyright text at the bottom of the second label style is longer. Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information, as with the second copy shown here. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)

Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and scans.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo cassette releases, CBS PC 4880 (Australia), 1976, re-released mid-1980s, late 1980s:

CBS PC 4880 (Australia) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Stuart Moore (1976 release)
The insert of the 1976 cassette release is blank on the reverse. The cassette is white with light buff paper labels. On the 1976 insert "The Anytime Sound From CBS" text promotes the comparatively new stereo cassette format and other CBS cassette releases. The next release must date from the mid-1980s because the 1981 Australian cassette release of Shot Of Love still had paper labels. This release has exactly the same "Anytime Sound" insert, blank on the reverse. The cassette is now off-white with blue text, there are no paper labels. The song copyright credits have also changed: on Side 1 the credits are now all now "Warner Brothers", whereas on the first release Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again; Oh Sister and Lay, Lady, Lay were credited to "Albert". On Side 2 the credits are now all "Warner Brothers", on the first release all the songs were credited to "Albert".

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo vinyl LP releases,  CBS ASF 1908 (South Africa/Rhodesia), 1976:

CBS ASF 1908 (South Africa) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (Rhodesian release is the same)
The South African release was marketed and distributed in South Africa by the Gramophone Record Co. (Pty.) Ltd., part of EMI. The sleeve was printed in South Africa by Interpak. It has the usual front sleeve. The rear sleeve has the CBS (bottom centre) and Interpak (bottom right) logos in blue. Hard Rain was the last album with plain orange CBS labels to be released in South Africa, as in some Latin American countries below. The copy of the South African record shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF 1908 - AL 34349, Side 2 - ASF 1908 - BL 34349.

The copy of the Rhodesian record shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF 1908 - AL 34349, Side 2 - ASF 1908 - BL 34349.

CBS 230.007 (Brazil), 1976 (two variants):

CBS 230.007 (Brazil) - front with sticker, scan by Manuel García Jara (1976 releases)

These releases were made in Brazil. The 1976 release was made by Discos Copacabana (based in Sao Bernardo do Campo), although records made by this company for other companies have on the record labels only "Som Indústria E Comercio S.A.". The front sleeve of the 1976 copy shown has the same record store sticker as the second Brazilian release of Desire shown on that album's web page. The sleeve and record labels have song titles in English only. There was a six page insert with the song lyrics in English. The 1976 record has orange CBS labels, the last Brazilian release to have these. Street-Legal had orange/yellow Discos CBS labels from first release. The record of the 1976 copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 230.007-A  AL-34349, Side 2 - 230.007-B  BL-34349.

Sergio Mariano Romay’s copy was also made by Discos Copacabana. This copy was bought in Bauru, a Brazilian municipality of the State of Sâo Paulo. In the bottom right corner of the front sleeve is a sticker from a disco/night club in Bauru.  The sleeve and lyrics insert are the same as those of Manuel's copy. However, the orange CBS record labels have a different typeface for the song titles than that of Manuel's copy, and the song title layout on Side 2 is different, with no song titles above the centre hole instead of two. Both Side 1 labels have two song titles above the centre hole and three song titles below. On Side 2 of both label variants I Threw It All Away is spelled correctly, unlike on the three orange/yellow Side 2 labels.

Michel Pomarede has a variant 2 copy with a promo stamp on Side 1 with "AMOSTRA INVENDÁVEL [SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE]". There is no stamp on Side 2. This copy comes with a different four page folded 12" lyrics insert.

These three variants all have orange/yellow Discos CBS labels and come in the same sleeve. Both variants 1 and 2 come with the six-page "portrait" lyrics insert as shown above. The variant 3 records comes with a new four-page folded 12" x 12" lyrics insert. The record of Lars M. Banke's variant 2 copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349 A1, Side 2 - BL 34349 B ("B" only on Side 2, not "B1" as expected). Apart from "LADO 1/2" missing to the right of the centre hole on variant 3, variants 2 and 3 are the same. The song titles are continuous on Side 1 of all three variants. On the variant 1 Side 2 label the song titles are again continuous, but they are one per line on the variants 2 and 3 Side 2 labels.

CBS 230.007 (Brazil) - detail of Side 2, picture found by Sergio Mariano Romay (late 1970s release variant 1 - "I THRE IT ALL AWAY")

On Side 2 of all three label variants I Threw It All Away is mis-spelled: the variant 1 Side 2 label has "I THRE IT ALL AWAY", the variants 2 and 3 Side 2 labels have "I THRET IT ALL AWAY" (perhaps an unsuccessful attempt to correct it)!

CBS/Harmony 148.092 (Brazil), 1982:

CBS/Harmony 148.092 (Brazil) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1982 release)

This is the Harmony budget of this album, made by Discos CBS itself. Only three Dylan albums were released on this low price label (even though they are now expensive items to collect): Bob Dylan (never released before; in fact, only Highway 61 Revisited and Nashville Skyline were released in the 1960s in Brazil; why this album and not for example The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan or Bringing It All Back Home?); Planet Waves (previously released by Asylum) and Hard Rain, already released in 1976. These choices were a big surprise because Harmony specialised in the issue of previously unreleased albums at low price. The album has the regular front but, as usual for Harmony, the rear is plain white. Unlike the original and late 1970s releases, this reissue has translated titles into Portuguese on the rear sleeve and on the record labels. The record has light orange Harmony labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-34349 148.092-A, Side 2 - BL-34349 148.092-B. On the Side 2 record label I Threw It All Away is now spelled correctly again.

CBS never had a subsidiary company in Chile, and this very rare album was made in Chile by EMI Odeón (the only other CBS Dylan Chilean album, Nashville Skyline, was made by Philips). The front and rear sleeve are standard with credits and track list in English only. The text "Fabricado bajo licencia de CBS, USA por EMI Odeón Chilena, S.A." is printed at the bottom of the rear sleeve. Manuel's commercial record has plain orange CBS labels with titles in Spanish (good translations) and English. The labels say "Fabricado y distribuido por Industrias Eléctricas y Musicales Odeón" ("Industrias Eléctricas y Musicales" is the Spanish translation of "Electric and Musical Industries" = EMI). The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 34349, Side 2 - BL 34349.

Sergio Mariano Romay has a promo copy in the standard commercial sleeve. The record has white promo labels of a completely different design from the commercial labels.

Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo vinyl LP release, CBS 14993 (Colombia), 1977:

CBS 14993 (Colombia) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
Because the matrix numbers include "2-12-76" (2 Dec 1976), this Colombian release must date from early 1977. The sleeve is made of fragile cardboard and the front has a lighter tone, nearly grey, than the usual front. The front sleeve has an unique big salmon-coloured CBS logo and the "Estereo 360 Sound" logo. The rear sleeve has the tracklist in Spanish and English. The record has plain orange CBS labels. The song titles are translated into Spanish. On Side 1 the track 3 title "Memphis" is misspelled as "Menphis" twice, once in the Spanish title and again in the English title (this is also incorrect in Spanish, as the Spanish name for Memphis is "Menfis"). The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 14993 A  2-12-76, Side 2 - 14993 B  2-12-76.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS/Supraphon Gramofonovy Klub 1 13 2217 (Czechoslovakia), 1977; CBS/Supraphon 1 13 2217 (Czechoslovakia), 1979:

CBS/Supraphon
Gramofonovy Klub 1 13 2217 (Czechoslovakia) - front (my 1977 copy)
The "Gramophone Club" album was released by Supraphon in the former joined country of Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia) under licence from CBS in 1977. The album title is missing from the front sleeve and the record labels. Only the front sleeve is laminated. There is a folded Czech language lyrics insert. The record has orange CBS labels. My copy of the record club release shown has a price sticker on the back, which implies it was sold commercially. The record of my copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - E 3795/C  II  4, Side 2 - E 3796/H  A  4. Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy of the record club release that, unlike mine, does not have a price sticker on the rear sleeve. The record has the same labels as mine, dated "77 2" (second half of 1977), but different stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - E 3795/C  C, Side 2 - E 3796/A  A.

The album was reissued in 1979 as a regular commercial release. The differences are that the regular album labels have the price printed on them (80 Koruny) to the right of the centre hole and are now dated "79 1" (first half of 1979). The rear sleeve of Ronald Born's commercial copy has the same price sticker as my copy at bottom right.

Columbia CK 34349 (USA) - CD scan by Gil Lamont

This was the first US CD release of this title. There is a folded front insert with minimal information. The CD is silver with black text. Gil Lamont says: "This first release is incorrectly indexed. Oh, Sister doesn't end until around 1:04 of Lay, Lady, Lay. The timings listed on the inserts are accurate for this incorrect indexing. Although the indexing was corrected in the later Nice Price reissue -- Oh, Sister timing out at 5:08 and Lay, Lady, Lay timing out at 4:47 - oddly enough the printed timings on the later insert have not been corrected."

Information and scans from Gil Lamont.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - CD release, Columbia CD 32308 (Austria for Europe), 1990s:

Columbia CD 32308 (Austria for Europe) - front of jewel case with "Dylan Originals" sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel
Like the current CDs (that haven't been replaced by hybrid SA-CD/remastered editions) and also the US release, this release again has a plain rear insert with just song titles. The front insert is an twelve-page booklet with lyrics. This release is still on sale.

Gerd Rundel's copy came in a red CD tray with a Nice Price "Dylan Originals/30 Years on Columbia" sticker on the front of the jewel case.

These releases had a single card front insert and no other artwork. The CBS album was in the "Select" series and had a CD made in Australia by Disctronics. The CBS rear insert had no barcode. The Columbia album was later released in the "Select" series with the "Select" logo on the front and rear inserts. The Columbia "Select" album was also sold in a double width jewel case with Highway 61 Revisited.

Bob Dylan/The Rolling Thunder Revue - "Hard Rain" - CD release, Sony Records SRCS 6169 (Japan), 1 Dec 1991:

This mid-priced CD has a black, red, white, blue and yellow obi in the "Nice Price 15" series with price ¥1,800 and date "91-12-1" (1 Dec 1991). As far as I know this is the only CD release of this album in Japan. The copy shown is a promo with a panel on the rear insert and stamped Japanese characters in the clear centre of the CD itself. As well as the front insert there was a folded white paper insert in English and Japanese with the album lyrics.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Wil Gielen and Moise Potié for information and scans.

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK19" plus "DISC 22". The CDs are different in detail, the US Hard Rain CD has catalogue number "88691924312D22", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-22". This album has been remastered, so is the fourth Dylan album remastered for this project. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information that some copies of this CD have faults on Oh, Sister at 0:08 and 3:53 - check your copy! Latest news is that Sony Music are replacing affected copies. The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
