The Traveling Wilburys on Nobody's Child (R-0206, see Wilburys 1990) and the album Volume Three were Bob Dylan (Boo), George Harrison (Spike), Jeff Lynne (Clayton) and Tom Petty (Muddy) - different pseudonyms from those on the first album, see Wilburys 1988. The story at the time was that Del Shannon would replace Roy Orbison, because Jeff Lynne was producing an album for him with George Harrison and Tom Petty also participating. However, Del sadly died in Feb 1990 - the otherwise unreleased single bonus track Runaway (R-0210, also see Wilburys 1990) could be a tribute to him. It was reported that before his death in 2001 George Harrison was working on a new Wilburys anthology to be called Maximum Traveling which was going to contain three unreleased tracks recorded by the Wilburys with Del, although there now seem to be no plans to release these. For the reissue of this album in The Traveling Wilburys Collection with two bonus tracks, see Wilburys 2007.

Vinyl Releases

"Traveling Wilburys Volume Three" - LP releases: Wilbury Records/Warner Bros (various catalogue numbers) (Worldwide), 23 Oct 1990:

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 1-26324 (USA):

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 1-26324 (USA) - front scan by Marc Kuszel

The US album was made by three different manufacturers for Warner Bros. Each one has different catalogue number, barcode and copyright text.

  1. Made by Warner Bros. itself (1-26324)

  2. Made by Columbia House under license (W1-26324)

  3. Made by BMG Direct Marketing Inc., Indianapolis, IN, under license (R 124817) (not yet shown)

The record of Sergio Mariano Romay's Warner Bros copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 1-26324-A SR-1, Side 2 - 1-26324-B SR-2. In addition each side has "SRC" stamped as shown in the illustration. This indicates the record was pressed at the Specialty Records Corporation plant in Olyphant, PA, which was purchased by WEA (Warner-Elektra-Asylum) in 1979.

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros/MMC Records 7599-26324-1/PL MMC 9010 (Hungary) - front scan by Alex Ivanov

The Hungarian LP was manufactured in Hungary by MMC Records, who also imported the German LP of Traveling Wilburys Volume One into Hungary, see Wilburys 1988. The difference between this and the German vinyl release shown is that the German release has a barcode in the upper right-hand corner of the rear sleeve.

This is the version released in the former Yugoslavia, made by Jugoton of Zagreb (now Croatia). The rear sleeve has a Jugoton price sticker for 134,40 Dinars. Like Virgin used to be in the UK, Jugoton was both a record label and a chain record store in the former Yugoslavia. The record labels have the "SOKOJ" Yugoslav copyright organisation logo.

Warner Bros/Tusk Music Company/TEAL Records WBC 1686 (Zimbabwe) - LP front scan by Gerd Rundel (both releases)
This album was manufactured and distributed in Zimbabwe by Tusk Music Company (Pty) Ltd. on behalf of Warner Bros. The sleeve looks the same as Manuel's South African release except for the printer information at bottom right of the rear - it was printed in Zimbabwe by Sebri Printers. The record was manufactured by TEAL Record Company and has black/white Warner Bros labels. It comes in a thin transparent inner sleeve and the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WBC 1686A, 1-26324-A-SR-2, Side 2 - WBC 1686B, 1-26324-B-SR-2. Also shown are the record labels of the promo release with "PROMOTION ONLY - NOT FOR SALE" below the "Manufactured by TEAL Record Company" text, and also a catalogue number of WBC 1686 PRO. This copy of the promo record comes in the commercial sleeve.

Wilbury Records/WEA 1-26324 (Uruguay for Argentina) - Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (commercial release)

Unlike other countries' releases, the sleeve of this release has a green rather than a brown tinge - the band name has green lettering instead of brown. The rear sleeve has all information in Spanish only: copyright, credits and tracklist. The record has plain Warner Bros labels with the tracklist in Spanish and in English. The translations into Spanish are correct and this time the Mexican and Uruguayan releases have almost identical translations.

Sergio Mariano Romay adds: "I worked in a record store from October 1989 to February 1998. I remember that in those years WEA did not manufacture vinyl in my country (Argentina) but imported them from Uruguay. So, the Argentina LP 1-26324 is the same that was released in Uruguay. My copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 1-26324-A – SR-2 (or Z), Side B - 1-26324-B – SR-2. Both sides have (handwritten too but very faint) "SP-ARG" and a logo with “S” plus small “R” and small “C”." As well as "SP-ARG", the copyright organisations listed ("SADAIC-BIEM" and "AADI-CAPIF") are Argentinean so this also implies the albums were intended for sale in Argentina. However, Manuel's copy was bought in Montevideo, Uruguay, so some copies must have found their way back there. (Thanks to Manuel for pointing out that "BIEM" represented artists in 44 countries including Uruguay.) In contrast, in 1988 the Argentinean release of Traveling Wilburys Volume One was made by EMI-Odeón in Argentina for WEA, not by WEA in Uruguay.

The promo copy shown has the same sleeve as the commercial copy. The record has white promo labels with text "DIFUSION PROHIBIDA SU VENTA [DISTRIBUTION PROHIBITED FOR SALE]" printed, not stamped. The handwritten matrix numbers are the same as Sergio's commercial copy, including the handwritten "SP-ARG".

Uruguay also had its own release of Traveling Wilburys Volume Three, WEA WB 20066-4, but on cassette only, see below.

Wilbury Records/WEA 26324 (Argentina):

Wilbury Records/WEA 26324 (Argentina) - Side 1 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay
This version of the album was also released in Argentina, but this time was actually made in Argentina, not Uruguay. The sleeve is exactly the same as that of the Uruguay for Argentina album immediately above, but was this time printed in Argentina.
Wilbury Records/WEA 26324 (Argentina) - detail of Side 1, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay ("TRAVELYNG" mistake)

Wilbury Records/WEA 26324 (Argentina) - detail of Side 1, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay ("INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA")

Wilbury Records/WEA 26324 (Argentina) - Side 2 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

The record labels, however, are different. There is a mistake - the band name is shown as "TRAVELYNG WILBURYS" below the centre hole on both sides, although the album title above the centre hole is correct. The labels also have "INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA" showing the record this time was pressed in Argentina. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 1-26324-A – SR-2 (or "Z"), Side B - 1-26324-B – SR-2. Both sides have (handwritten too but very faint) "SP-ARG" and a logo with “S” plus small “R” and small “C”.

Wilbury Records/WEA 23 (1031) 00140 (Colombia) - front scan by Sergio Mariano Romay
Like The Traveling Wilburys Volume One, this Colombian release was made in Medellín, Colombia, by Sonolux S.A. on behalf of WEA Records. It has the same design sleeve with rounded corners (right-hand on the front and left-hand on the rear). The sleeve is fully laminated front and rear. There is no text on the spine. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - “SRC” (stamped), “1-26324-A-SR-2” (handwritten) plus “1-5” and “SR-COL” (small and faintly handwritten), Side 2 - “SRC” (stamped), “1-26324-B SR-2” (handwritten).

"Traveling Wilburys Volume Three" - stereo cassette release: WEA/Wilbury Records 4-26324 (Argentina), 1990:

WEA/Wilbury Records 4-26324 (Argentina) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

The 1988 Argentinean Traveling Wilburys Volume One cassette release was made by EMI-Odeón on behalf of WEA, but a late 1980s release was manufactured in Argentina by E.M.S.S.A. (Electrosonora Manufacturas Saavedra Sociedad Anónima). This cassette was also made by E.M.S.S.A. and again has a short insert of textured paper, printed on both sides. The outside has a reproduction of the LP front and the song titles in Spanish (the same translations as the vinyl release). The inside has the titles of the songs in Spanish and English, the "Wilbury names" of the five members, plus the real names of backing musicians.

WEA/Wilbury Records 4-26324 (Argentina) - bottom of cassette with "EMSSA" leader tape, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

The cassette is brownish white with brown text, there are no paper labels. "EMSA" is embossed on both cassette sides at upper right and the rear of the cassette case, but "EMSSA" is printed on the leader tape. The catalogue number (4-26324) is similar to that of other international releases.

Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.

"Traveling Wilburys Volume Three" - stereo cassette release: Warner Bros/WEL 20066-4 (Uruguay), 1990:

Warner Bros/WEL 20066-4 (Uruguay) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (inside is blank)

This cassette release has a long folded card insert, blank on the inside.  The titles of the songs (insert and labels) are in English only. “Made in Uruguay” is printed in the insert and also on the labels (very small text). The insert has the “Wilbury names” of the four members, plus the real names of the backing musicians. The cassette is white, with yellow/brown paper labels printed in black and blue ink. “AGADU” (the name of the Uruguayan copyright organisation) is present on the labels. The folded card insert was printed in Uruguay by FIMASA and the cassette was made by WEL S.A. (like other Uruguayan releases on cassette, including CBS releases). The insert and the labels have the Dolby Noise Reduction logo. The cassette can be opened, as there are five screws on Side 2.

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 7599-26324-2 (Germany for Europe):

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 7599-26324-2 (Germany for Europe) - CD front (my copy)
The German CD release was distributed throughout Europe - my copy was bought in the UK. The front insert was a single sheet folded into eight panels.

Thanks to "Geneviève" for the information that a version of the European release 7599-26324-2 is on sale in Germany with "five bonus tracks". This is actually a pirate recording - three of the "bonus tracks" are Nobody's Child (R-0206, see above), Runaway (R-0210, see below) and the instrumental version of New Blue Moon (R-0211, see below). The remaining two "bonus tracks" were the unreleased Wilburys 1990 out-takes that circulated amongst collectors: Maxine and Like A Ship - for details of these see my other site Starlight In The East: Bob Dylan’s Unreleased Songs. This CD should be avoided by collectors of official releases! Maxine and Like A Ship were officially released at last on the 2007 Wilburys boxed set The Traveling Wilburys Collection, see 2007.

Thanks to John Gaylor for scans of a "Limited Edition" numbered 211 652-7 that looks like a genuine promotional item, but which is in fact another pirated release. It contains all the songs from Volume One (see 1988) and Volume Three with extended versions of Handle With Care, End Of The Line and Wilbury Twist.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Jean-Pol Hiernaux, Patrick Helfrich and John Gaylor for information and scans.

Wilburys Records/Warner-Pioneer WPCP-4002 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Wil Gielen (promo release)
The promo release was from the Warner-Pioneer Corporation, while the commercial release was from Warner Music Japan (see detail scans of both the obis and the CDs). These releases had a white obi with black, dark red and green text. The spine and the largest Japanese text on the promo obi are in light green, on the commercial obi they're an aqua colour. Both obis are dated "90-11-10" (10 Nov 1990) and have price ¥2,400 (¥2,330 plus sales tax). The front is a folded insert in English and there is a second folded insert in English and Japanese. The promo copy shown has a numbered promo sticker on the rear insert and Japanese characters indicating a sample on the clear centre of the CD itself.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and to John Gaylor and Wil Gielen for further information and scans.
