The Traveling Wilburys on Volume One were Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Roy Orbison died on 6 Dec 1988 before the release of the single End Of The Line, and only his photograph is shown in the video of the song performed by the four surviving group members. The album tracks were added to this list later than the exclusive single tracks, which is why their R-numbers are higher. The US edition came in a "long box" - see below. For the reissue of this album in The Traveling Wilburys Collection with three bonus tracks, see Wilburys 2007.

Any Sale or Unauthorized Transfer is Prohibited and Void Subject to Return Upon Demand by Owner. Acceptance of This Record Constitutes Agreement to the Above”. Otherwise the front and rear sleeves, insert and record labels are the same as those of the commercial release.

On both record labels a small letter "A" has been stamped/cut into the paper very near the central hole. The sleeve of this copy has "9  25796-1    TRAVELING WILBURYS    VOLUME ONE       WILBURY RECORDS" on the spine, and barcode "0   7599-25796-1   2" on the rear (as shown). Traveling Wilburys - "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - vinyl LP releases, Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 925 796-1 (West Germany)/WX 224 (UK), 20 Oct 1988:

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 925 796-1 (West Germany)/WX 224 (UK) - LP front scan by Gerd Rundel

The West German release shown was sold in the UK with catalogue number "WX 224". The record has a picture label on Side 1 with the track list for both sides on Side 2 with a picture background, like the US release. The record of Gerd Rundel's copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 925796-1-AX, Side 2 - 925796-1-BXX, with "R/S Alsdorf" also stamped on both sides.

Paul Shenton's copy, bought in the UK on the day of release, has a front sticker advertising the inclusion of a sticker sheet with different catalogue numbers "WX224W" and "925 833-1". There is also a sticker with "WX224W" over the barcode on the rear sleeve. Strangely, the inner sleeve rear does not have "UK: WX 224" at top right as that of Gerd's copy does. Paul's copy also has a Side 2 label with a plain background, like the copy imported into Hungary below.

Marc Kuszel has two copies of the German release where the Side 1 label is the same as before but the Side 2 labels are the plain label variants as shown for Paul Shenton's copy. The records of both these copies have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - "R/S Alsdorf 925796-1-A", Side 2 - "R/S Alsdorf 925796-1-B"

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 925 796-1 (West Germany)/WX 224 (UK) - LP Side 2 scan by Alex Ivanov (copy sold in Hungary - white label)

Alex Ivanov has a copy sold in Hungary imported from West Germany by MMC Import. This copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - "R/S Alsdorf 925796-1-AX H", Side 2 -" R/S Alsdorf 925796-1-BX H". MMC Import was founded in Hungary in 1990, so the copy was imported there after that. The Side 1 label is the same as the German release, but the Side 2 label is the plain label variant. MMC released their own version of Traveling Wilburys Volume Three in Hungary in 1990, see Wilburys 1990.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel, Alex Ivanov and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

Wilbury Records/Concord Bicycle 0888072009622 (Europe) - front photocopy by Paul Shenton

This 2007 release by Concord Bicycle was manufactured in the EU. There must have been an equivalent US release, the predecessor of the 2016 US release above.

On the Side 2 record label the songs are still credited to The Traveling Wilburys but now copyrighted separately without dates. Congratulations, Tweeter And The Monkey Man and Dirty World are copyrighted to Special Rider Music (Bob's company). Traveling Wilburys -  "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - vinyl LP release: Wilbury Records/WEA Records 925796-1 (Spain), 1988:

Wilbury Records/WEA Records 925796-1 (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
The Spanish edition of this album was surprisingly made by Discos CBS for WEA - CBS records themselves were made by Tecnodisco at this time! Copies of Traveling Wilburys Volume 3 sold in Spain were imported from Germany, so there was no separate Spanish release. In 1990 WEA Spain released only some promotional singles, but no longer albums. The rear sleeve has a price sticker for 1199 pesetas (€12.00 today). There is a picture inner sleeve and the record has a picture label on Side 1 and the track listing for both Sides on Side 2, the same as the German release above. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 925796-1A, Side 2 - 925796-1B.

The Greek release was manufactured in Greece by G.P.I. S.A. It does not have an inner sleeve, but instead has a double-sided insert with the illustrations and information from other worldwide inner sleeves. Also shown is a test pressing with white stock "SAMPLE" labels with handwritten text on Side 1 only. The sleeve is that of the Greek commercial release. Wilbury Records/Warner Bros/Tusk Music Company WBC 1652 (South Africa) - front scan by Manuel García Jara

The South African release of this album was manufactured and distributed in South Africa by Tusk Music Company (Pty) Ltd. for Warner Bros. The sleeve was printed by Interpak (as were the South African CBS Dylan albums). Also shown is the rear of a still sealed copy with a sticker showing a date (10-5-89) and a price for 28.99 Rand. The record has the standard printed inner sleeve and plain Warner Bros labels. The records of both of Manuel's copies shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - WBC 1652-A-1, Side 2 - WBC 1652-B.

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros/Tusk Music Company WBC 1652 (South Africa) - spine scan by Sergio Mariano Romay - "TRAVELLING WILBURYS, UK spelling)

Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy that is slightly different from Manuel's. At rear top right there is a record shop sticker showing a price of 24.99 Rand.  At the bottom of the rear sleeve under "NELSON WILBURY" a number ("5") and a date ("17 11 88" - 17 Nov 1988") have been stamped. The spine text is “VOLUME ONE  TRAVELLING WILBURYS  WBC 1652” - the UK spelling of "TRAVELLING".  The record has a standard printed inner sleeve and a paper inner sleeve, without any text and a central cut-out. The labels are slightly different because there is no reference to Tusk Music - in the circumference it now says "Manufactured and distributed by WEA Records (Pty) Ltd.". “217” is embossed in reverse on the Side 2 record label, to the right of the centre hole. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WBC 1652 – A, Side 2 - WBC 1652 – B.

Traveling Wilburys -  "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - promo vinyl LP release: Warner Bros/TEAL Record Company WBC 1652 PRO (Zimbabwe), 1988; commercial vinyl LP release: Warner Bros/TEAL Record Company WBC 1652 (Zimbabwe), 1988:

Warner Bros/TEAL Record Company WBC 1652 (Zimbabwe) - front scan by Manuel García Jara

Although "Made in Zimbabwe" is not printed anywhere on the sleeve or on the record labels, this is a typical Zimbabwean album, made after Rhodesia became Zimbabwe: it has a flimsy sleeve and white labels made of poor quality paper. This very rare album was made by TEAL Record Company (who also made Planet Waves), marketed and distributed by Gramma Records and printed by Bardwell Printers (a company based in Harare).

Warner Bros/TEAL Record Company WBC 1652 (Zimbabwe) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (compare with South African release above - Tusk and Interpak logos obscured)

The sleeve is essentially identical to that of the South African album. The information at the bottom of the rear sleeve could create confusion: there is information of both releases, South African and Zimbabwean. The Tusk and Interpak logos (South African manufacturer and printer companies) are only partially obscured and the text "Marketed and distributed by Tusk Music Co." is still present on the lowest line. There are also the "Bardwell" logo (in very small letters, below the guitar on the left) and the text "Marketed and distributed by Gramma Records" (below the guitar on the right) The record has white Warner Bros labels even though this is not a promo. The labels of the actual promo record are also shown, they have "PROMOTION ONLY - NOT FOR SALE" below the "Manufactured by TEAL Record Company" text, and also a catalogue number of WBC 1652 PRO, printed twice on the labels.

Side 2 of the sample copy has a purple stamp with "SAMPLE RECORD NOT FOR RESALE". The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WBC 1652-A-1, Side 2 - WBC 1652-B.

The Argentinean release of this album was made by EMI-Odeón in Argentina for WEA. The song titles are translated into Spanish on the rear sleeve and on the record labels. "Heading For The Light" is translated here as "Caminando hacia la luz". This song title was translated as "Dirigiéndose hacia la luz" in the Peruvian Virrey EP, see Wilburys 1989.

The album sleeve and insert (both sides) of the promo copy shown are the same as those of the commercial release. There is nothing that identifies it as a promo copy. The record labels have a text printed in yellow that says: “VENTA PROHIBIDA – PROMOCIONAL [SALE FORBIDDEN – PROMOTIONAL]". Both records shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 25796-A, Side 2 - 25796-B.

Traveling Wilburys -  "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - vinyl LP releases, АнТроп П91 00223/Anfon P91 00223 (Russia), 1991:

Anfon P91 00223 (Russia) - front scan by Alex Ivanov (variant 1)
These very collectable records with a unique sleeve are unofficial, so are also listed in Questionable Releases. АнТроп (Anfon or Antrop) was a record company run by Andrei Tropillo. The first two record labels have the flags of the new Russian republic, which came into existence in 1991.

The sleeve and the record labels are dated 1991, but Alex Ivanov says it was not in fact released until 1993. As can be seen there are several rear sleeve variations, brown, grey and dark grey. Manuel García Jara has a copy with alternate record labels, bought in Lithuania. These labels do not have the Russian flag. Manuel says the records with the labels without the Russian flag were sold in former republics of the Soviet Union such as the Baltic States, and the Russian flag was removed for political reasons. This copy has a dark grey rear sleeve.

Warner Bros/Wilbury Records 7599-25796-4 (Germany for Europe) - cassette Side 2 photocopy by Paul Shenton (variant 1A)

This German release was sold throughout Europe, the copy shown was bought in the UK. The UK catalogue number is WX 224 C, the French catalogue number is WE 481. The cassette is transparent smoked grey with white text, there are no paper labels.

Paul Shenton has two copies with identical cassettes, but slightly different outside inserts and a common different inside insert. Manuel's outside insert (variant 1) has copyright information on two lines with "TELDEC Record Service GmbH" on the top line, "0" and "3" printed in small text on either side of the barcode, and on the spine "France" is in upper/lower case. The outside insert of Paul's first copy (variant 2) has copyright information on one line with "TELDEC Record Service GmbH" missing, "0" and "3" in small text missing from the barcode, while on the spine "France" is still in upper/lower case. The outside insert of Paul's second copy (variant 3) is identical to variant 2 except for one detail - "FRANCE" on the spine is now in upper case.

Paul's two inside inserts (variants 2 and 3) are the same, but have four lines of publishing credits added at the bottom of the centre column, missing from the inside insert of Manuel's copy (variant 1).

Paul's third copy has the same insert as variant 1 but a different cassette - it has the full catalogue number of "7599-25796-4" (as the barcode on the insert), not the shorter "925 796-4". The cassette shown is badly scratched, so copies poorly. I've called this variant 1A.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

Traveling Wilburys -  "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - commercial cassette releases, WEA/EMI Odeón 90770 (Argentina), 1988; WEA/EMSSA 4-25796 (Argentina), late 1980s:

WEA/EMI Odeón 90770 (Argentina), 1988:

WEA/EMI Odeón 90770 (Argentina) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

The first Argentinean release of this cassette was made – like the vinyl release above - by EMI-Odeón in Argentina for WEA. This cassette has a short insert of textured paper, printed on both sides. The outside has a reproduction of the LP front and the song titles in Spanish (the same translations as the vinyl release). The inside has the titles of the songs in Spanish and English, the "Wilbury names" of the five members, plus the real names of backing musicians. The cassette is white with brown text, there are no paper labels. "EMI" is embossed on both cassette sides at upper right and the rear of the cassette case, and also printed on the leader tape. On the top of the cassette is “1846.70”, a number not mentioned anywhere else.

- outside of cassette insert, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

This cassette has a new catalogue number, 4-25796 (similar to those of other worldwide releases). The inside of the cassette insert is exactly the same as the previous release. This time the cassette was made in Argentina by E.M.S.S.A. (Electrosonora Manufacturas Saavedra Sociedad Anónima), as was the 1990 Argentinean cassette release of The Traveling Wilburys Volume Three. "EMSSA" is embossed on the rear of the cassette case and Side 1 of the cassette, as well as being printed on the leader tape. The cassette can be opened and has five screws on Side 1.

This cassette release was manufactured and distributed for Warner Bros/Wilbury Records by EMI Odeón Chilena S.A., Santiago, Chile. "EMI" is stamped on both the back of the cassette outer case and on both sides of the cassette, and also printed on the leader tape. The cassette is white with white Warner Bros labels.

Warner Bros 20039-4 (Uruguay) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (variant 1)

This cassette has a folded card insert, blank on the inside. The front of the insert reproduces the photo cover of the USA promo edition LP (see detail of Sergio's promo copy). The text in unreadable golden letters is visible in the bottom left of the picture. The titles of the songs are in English only (insert and labels). “Made in Uruguay” is on the insert and also on the cassette labels in small text. The insert names the artists as “TRAVELING WILBURYS”, but they're named as “THE TRAVELING WILBURYS” on the labels. Some text is obliterated on the insert and the Side 1 cassette label of the first copy shown.

The manufacturer is WEL S.A., a Uruguayan company represented by CUD (Uruguayan Chamber of Discs), who released Traveling Wilburys Volume Three in Uruguay as well as several CBS Dylan cassettes in the 1980s. The cassette is white with grey paper labels. Although the tracklisting on the insert is correct, the sides of the cassette are reversed so that the songs from Side 2 of the LP are on Side 1 and vice-versa. The cassette can be opened and has five screws on Side 2.

On the second copy the text "FONOGRAMA ES CULTURA PRODUCTOR FONOGRÁFICO WEL S.A. – Art. 79 Ley 13349. Imp. En FIMASA. Made in Uruguay” has been relocated to a different part of the insert. This cassette is again white, but this time the paper labels are also white (discoloured by the passage of time). The sides of the cassette are again reversed. The blue and black label text looks identical.

Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.

Traveling Wilburys -  "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - CD releases, Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 925 796-2 (West Germany for Europe), later released as Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 7599-25796-2 (West Germany for Europe), 18 Oct 1988:

Wilbury Records/Warner Brothers 925 796-2 (West Germany for Europe) - front insert (my copy)

The European release was manufactured in Germany by Teldec Record Service GmbH. My copy has the catalogue number 925 796-2, whereas Tjeerd Timmerman has a later copy with the longer catalogue number 7599-25796-2 (see detailed scans of inserts for differences). Tjeerd's CD still has the 925 796-2 catalogue number, but it has a very faint Warner Bros logo in the clear centre of the CD (not possible to scan).  Tjeerd Timmerman has also found a copy on eBay with "MADE IN ENGLAND" and "MASTERED BY NIMBUS" on the CD itself. As all European copies were sourced from Germany, I suspect this is pirated.

The Australian release was also imported into New Zealand.

The 1988 Japanese copy found on eBay by Jean-Pol Hiernaux is a promo and has a promo sticker on the back. The Japanese release had a folded insert with the lyrics. These releases have a white obi with brown, blue, black and yellow text (information from Hans Seegers). The initial 1988 release before the introduction of sales tax in Japan had an obi price of ¥2,500 (the "25 at the start of the catalogue number indicates the price). The second release in 1989 after the introduction of sales tax had an obi price of ¥2,348 (¥2,280 plus sales tax). Wil Gielen's 1988 copy also has a promo sticker on the rear insert and Japanese characters indicating a sample on the clear centre of the CD itself.

The South Korean CD release was manufactured by SKC Limited on behalf of Warner Bros/Wilbury Records - more scans required.

This album was also released in other countries (scans to be added):
Venezuela - Traveling Wilburys Volumen 1 (Wilbury/Sonografica 35 006L)

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Bill Hester, Magnus Sjöberg, Jean-Pol Hiernaux, John Gaylor and Wil Gielen for information and scans.

Traveling Wilburys -  "Traveling Wilburys Volume One Gold Edition" - CD release: Wilbury Records 211 652-7 (Russia?), date(?):

Wilbury Records/Warner Brothers 211 652-7 - front of pirated "Limited Edition", scan by John Gaylor

As this CD was long deleted, several pirated releases appeared that looked genuine and featured "bonus tracks". One example was called the Traveling Wilburys Volume One Gold Edition and had the European catalogue number. The nine bonus tracks were lifted from the 12" singles (see Wilburys 1988) and a Traveling Wilburys demo tape that was leaked as a bootleg CD. Thanks to Paul S. Levine for information about this. Thanks to John Gaylor for scans of a "Limited Edition" numbered "211 652-7" that looks like a genuine promotional item, but which is in fact a pirated release. It contains all the songs from Volume One and Volume Three (see Wilburys 1990) with extended versions of Handle With Care, End Of The Line and Wilbury Twist.

CD-Mаксимальная [CD-Maximum] CDM 1197-37 (Russia) - front photocopy by Paul Shenton
This unofficial "2 on 1" CD release is dated "23-02-1999" on the rear insert and also has "FOR SALE IN RUSSIA ONLY" on the CD. It was not officially licensed from Warner Bros/Wilbury Records. There are spelling mistakes on the outside and inside of the front insert and also on the rear insert. For example "Light" is missing twice on Heading For The Light, and Cool Dry Place is shown twice as "Coll Dry Place".
