Christmas In The Heart (2009)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. This set is actually in mono, but it's included here because it has been added to the bobdylan.com albums page! They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

Bob Dylan In Concert: Brandeis University 1963 (2010)

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Revised 16 September, 2024.

Release date: 19 Oct 2010 (USA), 18 Oct 2010 (Europe), 15 Oct 2010 (Australia/New Zealand), 27 Oct 2010 (Japan).

Thanks to Ian Woodward for the photo of this promotional "hockey puck" made of rubber or similar material. It splits open to reveal a USB connector. On the memory stick are The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964 and The Original Mono Recordings (see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s) in MP3 format, but not the Brandeis concert (see 2010). Thanks to Masato Kato for information it also contains MP3 versions of Bob Dylan, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The Times They Are A-Changin', Another Side Of Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde and John Wesley Harding!

The following Witmark demos have been officially released on regular albums:

The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 [Rare And Unreleased] 1961-1991 (1991): The Times They Are A-Changin'; When The Ship Comes In; Walkin' Down The Line (but see below)
The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 - No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (2005): Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right

Thanks to Martin Andrzejewski for some observations on Walking Down The Line on Bootleg Series Vol. 9, confirmed by Ian Woodward: "On The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 Walking Down The Line is asterisked and indicated as previously released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, which is true but not quite.

First of all, the The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 track misses the first 35 or so seconds (compared with the 3 LP vinyl bootleg I found on my shelf). These 30 seconds contain a guitar doodling, Bob asking "right now?" and a lengthy harp intro. Then, on the boot, Bob starts singing: "Well I'm walking down the line", whereas on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 the first line beginning with "Lord I'm walking down the line", a phrase which is obviously picked and inserted here from a later verse.

The reason seems to be that the beginning of the original song has some background noises. Just like some blasts of wind hit the microphone through an open window or whatever it really is. This noise can be heard into the second harp solo, just before Bob starts to sing: "Got a heavy headed gal". It seem like they copied a later "Walking Down The Line" verse including part or whole of the following harp solo to solve the noise problem.

Right now, on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9, the song starts at its original beginning but is nevertheless tampered with because the background noise stops after Bob sang "Well I'm Walking Down The Line - I'm Walking Down The Line". To me it sounds as if the song has now its original beginning, but then it is melted as early as possible with the The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 version, to get rid of the background noise. That means, that we probably have a copy and paste part between second 40 and second 56."

One performance has been released on a limited edition of a regular album:

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964" - limited edition 180gm mono vinyl 4LP release, Columbia/Legacy 88697 78250 1 (USA), 26 Oct 2010:
This was
available for pre-sale with an exclusive T-shirt and limited edition 18" x 24" Bob Dylan poster at SonyMusicDigital.com/bobdylan.

Columbia/Legacy 88697 78250 1 (USA) - front of box with sticker and Columbia logo, scan by Gerd Rundel
My copy bought in the UK is the US release, so it's possible there is no separate European release.

Gerd Rundel's copy has the Columbia logo on the front of the box at bottom right, my copy doesn't. Franck Faugere has two copies - the one bought from www.amazon.com has the Columbia logo, the one bought directly from Sony doesn't. The rears of the boxes look identical.

Gerd Rundel has opened his sealed copy of the set! (I haven't opened mine...) Also included is a 12” 60-page booklet with nice Dylan photos of the 1960s. Additionally there are two flyers: an advertising insert for “The Original Mono Recordings”, a voucher for digital download of “The Witmark Demos” (the code is blacked out). The records of the copy shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 8869-7-78250-1, Side 2 - BL-8869-7-78250-1, Side 3 - CL 8869-7-78250-1, Side 4 - DL 8869-7-78250-1, Side 5 - EL 8869-7-78250-1, Side 6 - FL 8869-7-78250-1, Side 7 - GL 8869-7-78250-1, Side 8 - HL 8869-7-78250-1. “STERLING” is also stamped on each side of the vinyl.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Franck Faugere for scans.

Columbia/Legacy 88697 76179 2 (Australia) - front of slipcase with sticker, scan by Stuart Moore

I've received scans of two copies of this release, one bought in Australia from Stuart Moore, and one bought in New Zealand from Bill Hester, and they both look as if they could actually be the US release. There is no indication of country of origin on the packaging or the discs, unlike the bonus mono CD Bob Dylan In Concert: Brandeis University 1963 (see 2010), which is identified as being from Australia on both the card sleeve and the disc. As they don't have the Sony Music logo, again unlike the Australian Brandeis disc, I therefore suspect these copies were actually sourced from the USA. Bill Hester also tells me the set is being sold in New Zealand without the slipcase and the booklet! This set has catalogue number Columbia/Legacy 88697 80600 2.

Sony Music SICP 2960-61 (Japan) - front with obi and sticker, scan by Sonny Boy McFitzson

Thanks to Wil Gielen for scans of an early promo CD-R copy with no inserts. The discs are numbered "Disc 1" and "Disc 2" only and both have the title as "The Witmark Demo". Thanks to Gerd Rundel for scans of a second promo copy which comes in a double plastic wallet with folded inserts - the first insert is plain on the reverse – the second insert is printed on both sides. Both the promo CD-Rs have the wrong catalogue numbers: CD-R1 is shown as "SICP 2680" instead of "SICP 2960" and CD-R2 is shown as "SICP 2680" instead of "SICP 2961" (SICP 2680 is actually an album by AC/DC!).

Wil Gielen has a third promo copy, this time of the commercial release, with numbered promo stickers on both the obi and the rear of the slipcase, and "SAMPLE - LOANED" in the clear centres of the CDs.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and scans of the commercial release. The Japanese release comes in a slipcase with a wraparound obi and a front silver foil sticker advertising the CD Bob Dylan In Concert: Brandeis University 1963 (see 2010).  In the package is a voucher to send off for the Brandeis CD as in The Original Mono Recordings (Sony Music SICP 2951-59, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s). There are two booklets, one in English and one in Japanese. Otherwise the packaging and disc design are similar to the European release. Thanks to Arie de Reus for information that the Japanese Brandeis concert CD will be shipped in Feb 2011 to Japanese addresses only (no international shipping). Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information it actually arrived on 5 Mar 2011!

Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans.
