Video and DVD: Films & TV Series with Dylan Album Tracks - 2000s

This new page collects song performances from regular Dylan albums on VHS video and DVD included in films and TV series in the 2000s (I'm ignoring any editing or talking over them). I would be grateful for any additional information on these items and other material to place here. Films are listed by date of original appearance (in theatres or on TV), not when the VHS video or DVD came out, often some years later. The last entry for which there was a VHS release appears to be 2005. For the audio soundtrack albums on which these songs often also appear, see International Album Releases (Various Artists Compilations). For films from this period with Dylan rarities, see VHS & DVD. Uncredited pictures are from amazon.com or amazon.co.uk.

For a full Dylan filmography, see "Expecting Rain" or "TV Talkin'" . For informed discussion of all Bob's screen appearances, see C.P. Lee's well-received book "Like A Bullet Of Light  ".

All scans that aren't credited are from my own collection or amazon.com.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Fight the much-hated artificial and anti-consumer DVD Region system by making your PC DVD drive and software or your stand-alone DVD player region-free! For more information, see Inmatrix . Everyone can play all CDs worldwide, and it should be the same for DVDs! Also see DVD Codes .

Some studios are fortunately realising that they can maximise sales of individual DVD releases by making them region-free instead of having to manufacture multiple region-specific copies- click on the picture on the right to see the text.

This Norman Jewison film is about jailed boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, starring Denzel Washington. Bob's contribution is Hurricane, the album version from Desire. A "rap" version of the song is also performed by Black Thought, Common and Mos Def. The film also includes footage of Bob in concert with the Rolling Thunder Revue, probably from Renaldo And Clara, see VHS & DVD 1970s.

For the 2000 audio soundtrack album, see International Album Releases (Various Artists Compilations).

US DVD release
Episode 24, "House Arrest"  of Season 2 of this series, first broadcast on 26 Mar 2000, contains Gotta Serve Somebody, the album track from Slow Train Coming. The first Sopranos soundtrack album in 1999 also contained this song, see International Album Releases (Various Artists Compilations).

The third Sopranos soundtrack album includes an exclusive cover by Bob Dylan, Return To Me, see 2001. For the DVD/VHS boxed set The Sopranos - The Complete Third Series, containing the episode in which that song appears, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 1.

The second season set has also been released in the USA in eight multi-season DVD sets: The Sopranos Seasons One and Two, The Sopranos Complete First Three Seasons, The Sopranos Complete First Four Seasons, The Sopranos Complete First Five Seasons, The Sopranos Seasons One to Season 6 Part 1 plus two versions of the complete series including Seasons 6.1 and 6.2.

(Seasons 1 to 5 were 13 episodes each, but Season 6 had 21 episodes shown in two parts: 12 in Season 6.1 in 2006 and 9 in Season 6.2 in 2007.) Episode 86 of Season 6.2 also had a Dylan track, see 2007 below.

Bob's contribution to this film starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz is All The Tired Horses from Self Portrait.

I assume there was an original 2001 US DVD release but it has been superseded by the "Infinifilm Edition". The US and UK VHS releases now seem to be unavailable.

This film starring Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz was directed by Bob's long-time friend Cameron Crowe, who also directed Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire (see 1996 and VHS & DVD 1990s Part 2), and who wrote the sleeve notes for Biograph (see 1985 and 1997).

The Dylan contribution is 4th Time Around, the live version from The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Live 1966, The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert. Sadly, the original Dylan song intended for inclusion was Bob's cover of Willie Nelson's Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground (R-0156), released in 1983 as a 7" single B-side (see 1983). This appeared on a promo CD single in 2000.

This film is a remake of the Spanish-language film "Abra Los Oyos {Open Your Eyes]" in which Penelope Cruz played the same role as she does here - there is, however, no Dylan song on that soundtrack.

This Spanish film, whose title actually translates as "No News From God", yet again stars Penelope Cruz, this time with Victoria Abril. It includes Political World from Oh Mercy. It was also known as "Bendito Infierno [Blessed Hell]" in Latin American countries!

Thanks to Moise Potie for information and scans of the 2003 King Records Japanese DVD release and collector's booklet, which was sold in cinemas where the film was showing. This has yet another English title of "Welcome! Heaven" (even though the original title "No News From God" is also given in English on the front of the DVD case). This film biography of Johnny Cash contains Highway 61 Revisited, although it is not on the soundtrack album (below), which contains only cover performances from the film. The soundtrack album does contain Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as Johnny Cash and June Carter performing It Ain't Me, Babe. There are several references to Bob in the film, including a framed picture of the Blonde On Blonde album cover on the wall in the Columbia offices.

The music director for the film was T-Bone Burnett.

Thanks to Tim Dunn for information about the 2006 US DVD release, which will be in three versions including a two disc Special Edition, all of which include ten deleted scenes. The two disc edition includes 22 mins of extended musical performances (by the cast, which includes actors as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison). I have as yet no information about the UK release other than the two disc edition, but I would not expect a "Full Screen" DVD to be released in the UK.

"The Sopranos - Season Six Part II" - TV series originally broadcast in 2007, 4DVD set: HBO 94241 (USA), 23 Oct 2007:

HBO 94241 (USA) - picture from amazon.com
Episode 86, "Made In America", the last episode of Part II of this series, first broadcast on 10 Jun 2007, contains it's All Right Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), the album track from Bringing It All Back Home.

The first Sopranos soundtrack album in 1999 contained Gotta Serve Somebody, the album track from Slow Train Coming, see International Album Releases (Various Artists Compilations), although it wasn't actually used in an episode until Season 2 in 2000, see above.

This second part of Season Six has also been released in the USA in two multi-season DVD sets: two versions of the complete series including Seasons 6 Parts I and II. People who only want the Dylan episode can just buy Volume 4 of the Part II set, which contains the final two episodes on a single disc (identical to disc 4 of the 4DVD set).

(Seasons 1 to 5 were 13 episodes each, but Season 6 had 21 episodes shown in two parts: twelve in Season 6 Part I in 2006 and nine in Season 6 Part II in 2007.)
