The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Live 1975 (2002)

This page is part of a new section of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and not in the yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Revised 29 April, 2008.

Final front cover, 2004
US release (2CD set), Columbia/Legacy C2K 86882, 30 Mar 2004.

Although initial information was that it would be released as a 2 disc hybrid SACD set in CD stereo, SACD stereo and SACD 5.1 surround sound, this much postponed set has finally been released in stereo only.

All I Really Want To Do from this album was included on a 6-track SACD sampler handed out at the Home Entertainment Show in San Francisco, CA, in Jun 2003 - see 2003. As this is in SACD stereo and SACD 5.1 surround sound it is now a rarity.

Spanish Harlem Incident from this album was made available for download from the Apple iTunes Online Music Store in May 2003, see Online Performances.

This much-bootlegged "Halloween Mask" concert was recorded live at New York Philharmonic Hall, 31 Oct 1964.  It's known to collectors as the "Halloween Mask" concert, because Bob says at one point "It's Halloween, and I'm wearing my Bob Dylan mask!" The source of this Columbia album is not the same as the various bootlegs that circulate, and in far better quality. Joan Baez guested at the concert and appears on four tracks on the album. Her performance of Silver Dagger, on which Bob played guitar and harmonica, is incomplete on all circulating tapes, so is included here in full for Dylan fans for the first time.

Front cover used in early promotional material, 2003 - what a shame this picture wasn't used for the final release!

"Large Selection of Masks" - the picture used in early promo material for the front cover of this album, taken at 7th Avenue/49th Street, New York City, by Columbia staff photographer Sandy Speiser, who also took the photograph used for 1964's Another Side Of Bob Dylan

Tracks previously released officially:

R-0398 Mr. Tambourine Man

R-0399 A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

R-0400 Gates of Eden

These acetates also included:

R-0220 Mama, You've Been On My Mind - live with Joan Baez, Philharmonic Hall, New York City, 31 Oct 1964, from her Vanguard boxed set Rare, Live & Classic, 1993

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 3LP vinyl set, Classic Records for Columbia Legacy C2K-86882-140 (140gm)/C2K-86882-200 (200gm) (USA), Jul 2004:

Classic Records/Columbia Legacy C2K-86882-140/200 (USA) - picture from Classic Records web-site
This 3LP set is sold in normal vinyl (140gm) and heavyweight vinyl (200gm) versions. The only difference apart from the records is the sticker on the box front.

Thanks to Keith Venturoni for the scan of the rear of the box. Scans of the record sleeves and labels required!

Thanks to Richard Batey for pointing out that this release has a misprint on the spine of the box, where it says "The Bootleg Series Vol. 5"! The title on the front of the box is correct. The box was subsequently released with a sticker over the spine with the correct text - thanks to Patrick Helfrich for the scan.

CD Releases

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD-R promo set, Columbia (catalogue number?) (USA), Jan 2004:

Photograph found on eBay by Jean-Pol Hiernaux
This promo set is housed in two clear single CD jewel cases. The front inserts look as if they're from a PC printer.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding these on eBay.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD promo set, Columbia AC2K 86882 (USA), Jan 2004:

Columbia AC2K 86882 (USA) - booklet front, scan by Jens Winter
This promo set is housed in a clear slimline 2CD jewel case. The front insert is black with the words "The Bootleg Series Vol. 6 Bob Dylan Live 1964" written across the top all in white, with the word "Live" in orange. Across the bottom it says "Concert at Philharmonic Hall, October 31, 1964." The date is in orange.

On the reverse side is the track list and catalogue number AC2K 86882 at top left. Inside the folded card there is a short narrative about the concert with the photo first shown as the probable cover (Dylan in front of the masks) faded as a backdrop with the text over the top (see left)

The discs are white with red lettering, in the old Columbia album style and numbered "ACK 86913" and "ACK 86914". They have "Columbia" across the top, with "Bob Dylan The Bootleg Series Vol. 6" underneath. The text "Concert at Philharmonic Hall, October 31, 1964" is below the centre hole. Included with the promo set is the text of the liner notes that will be in the commercial release booklet.

"HwyCDRrev" informs me that early promo copies start with a stage announcement, later promo copies and the commercial release do not. These early copies (which probably have no artwork and are on CD-Rs, not as shown here) are rarities - scans required!

Thanks to Hervé from France for initial information plus Jens Winter and Jack from Canada for scans.

Columbia/Legacy  COL 512358 2 (Europe) - slipcase front with UK sticker (my copy)
This release is in a slipcase with a 56-page booklet including an essay by Sean Wilentz, who attended the 1964 show, and many previously unpublished photographs.  The booklet front uses the "Large Selection of Masks" picture by Sandy Speiser.

The CDs are in a single-width jewel case which has a folded front insert. The colour tints of the photographs are as shown - only the ones on the inside of the front insert and the reverse of the rear insert are in true black and white.

Thanks to Gil Lamont for scans of the US release, which has a yellow sticker with completely different text from the UK orange sticker. This release also has an insert advertising the MTV Unplugged DVD (see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 1) and earlier releases in The Bootleg Series. Gil's sharp eyes have noticed a typo on the reverse of this insert - Vol. 4 of The Bootleg Series is listed as "Live 1964" instead of "Live 1966"! Thanks also to Jack from Canada for the scan of the sticker adverting MTV Unplugged from his copy.

Thanks to Bill Hester for this information about the Australia/New Zealand release: "The Aussie version has the 56 page booklet and all the slip case, inserts, booklet pictures look exactly the same as the US and UK releases. The release date was about 26 April 2004 in Australia, and about the same in New Zealand. The catalogue number is Columbia/Legacy  5123582000, manufactured in Australia by Sony Music (Australia). The inserts, slipcase and the booklet have "www.sonymusic.co.au" as well as "www.sonymusic.co.nz". The actual CDs do not say where manufactured but have the Columbia/Legacy 5123582000 catalogue number on them. The only minor difference between the Australian and New Zealand releases is that the sticker on the NZ slip case is transparent, stuck directly to the slipcase with the text below."

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD set, Sony Music Direct MHCP 248-9 (Japan), 7 Apr 2004:

Sony Music Direct MHCP 248-9 - slipcase front scan by Jens Winter

The package includes a second 70-page booklet, with the same front and back cover as the regular one, but in a slightly different colour tone, a lighter black and white), and with mostly Japanese writing on the back.

This second booklet contains:

  1. The lyrics to all of the songs (incl. "Silver Dagger") in Japanese and English, and even including all of Dylan's spoken introductions to the songs. For example the entry for I Don't Believe You starts with "Oh, God. Here's the second verse of it. Hey, does anybody know the first verse of this song ? (I can't understand) Oh, I can't understand....".

  2. A two-page advert for the 15 SACD releases

  3. Text in Japanese, presumably a commentary about the album.

Thanks to Jens Winter for information and scans and to Hans Seegers for further information and the obi scan.
