The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

This set officially releases one rarity:
R-0137 It Ain't Me, Babe - live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975
This performance was originally released on the 1978 US Columbia promo 12" EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara" (see 1978). Don Handy considers that the performance on this album is different from the performance from the EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara", which he suggests actually comes from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. Both Glen Dundas and Olof Björner confirm the 20 Nov 1975 date on the EP, not 4 Dec 1975
Note the track information on the rear CD insert is incorrect. For Disc One, Track 7 is listed twice, first "at Boston Music Hall (First Show), 11/21/75" (21 Nov 1975) and secondly it says "Track 7 recorded at Memorial Auditorium, Worcester, MA, 11/19/1975" (19 Nov 1975). However, information for Track 7 is missing from the info for Disc Two. The answer is that the first attribution for Track 7 for Disc One is correct but the second attribution for Track 7 belongs to Disc Two - Hurricane is indeed from Worcester!
Georg Thoma points out that Track 9 (Blowin' In The Wind) and Track 10 (Mama, You Been On My Mind) on CD1, both duets with Joan Baez, were originally listed in reverse order on bobdylan.com. However, the recording dates of Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975, and Boston, MA, 21 Nov 1975 (evening show), were not changed on the final insert. Georg claims Joan Baez's spoken intro to Mama, You Been On My Mind is definitely from Cambridge, not Boston, while Blowin' In The Wind is definitely from Boston.
There is a third mistake in the track information: in the booklet notes to Live 75, Larry "Ratso" Sloman says Sara is from the afternoon show at Boston, 21 Nov 1975, witnessed by Sara Dylan, and is one of three songs from that performance. However, on the rear insert of the CD set it gives Sara as being from the evening show (the other two afternoon performances are listed). bobdylan.com also listed Sara as from the evening show, but may only have been copying the CD information rather than the booklet. Thanks to Les Kokay for comparing the two performances and deducing that Sara is in fact from the afternoon performance - Larry's notes are right!
Les says: "After multiple listenings and comparison with the
various audience/PA tapes I've finally decided that Sara is not
from the evening show but from the afternoon show. The versions are very
close, however, I did notice that on the evening show Dylan has a slight
stumble over the opening:
"I laid on the dune, I looked at the sky"
Bob sings "I laid on the be.une, I looked at the sky"
It's almost as if he was going to sing 'beach', but changed it to
'dune'.
For the afternoon he sings it perfectly, so I'm concluding the Bootleg
Series version is afternoon."
I've also been informed that there are differences in the instrumental accompaniment between the afternoon and evening performances, especially at the end of the song, and these prove the released version is definitely from the afternoon. Ian Woodward also interprets Larry Sloman's booklet notes to mean that either Hard Rain or The Water Is Wide is from Cambridge, instead of Montreal and Boston (evening) respectively as listed on the rear of the album. I'd be grateful for confirmation of the sound sources!
Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information that Isis (CD1, track 6) is actually a splice of an intro from Rochester, NY, 17 Nov 1975 (evening show?) with the remainder of the track from the Boston evening show as listed. He says Isis from the Boston afternoon and evening shows on bootlegs kicks off with single-beat drumming, but the official 2002 version of Isis has a double-beat intro. In "Beatleg" magazine, Japan, Feb 2003, Daisuke Ozawa concluded the intro was from a Rochester show (although possibly Cambridge), comparing all bootlegs available at the time. This performance is also CD10, track 6, on The Rolling Thunder Revue: The Live 1975 Recordings, 2019, but I have not yet compared them. Hermann Rechberger says Isis from the Rochester afternoon show has an incomplete start, so the intro could be from the evening show.
All these tracks are now also released (in re-mastered form) on the 14CD boxed set The Rolling Thunder Revue: The Live 1975 Recordings, 2019.

The European set has 5101403000 on the sticker, and the catalogue number for the CD set itself inside the slipcase is Columbia 510140 2 (same number on both CDs). The DVD, which is in a card sleeve, has the catalogue number Columbia 510140 3.Peter van der Kerk informs me that when he bought his copy of the Limited Edition in an independent record shop in Holland, he received free copies of the promotional CD singles Live & Rare (see 2001) and Live & Rare 2 (see 2002)! I haven't heard of this anywhere else, so it may be a promotion from that shop only.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue" - 2CD set, Columbia/Legacy C2K 87047 (USA/Canada), 26 Nov 2002:
The printing is of much better quality for the US release than for the European release (shown below), and the booklet is thicker because the paper quality is better! This is illustrated in the photo by Neil Burling showing the differences in thickness of the respective spines.
Thanks to Jack from Canada for scans of the Canadian release. The slipcase, booklet and sleeve are made in the USA, the two audio discs and the jewel case inserts were made in Canada. It therefore has the thicker US booklet. The bonus DVD in the Canadian Limited Edition was also made in the USA (see 2002).

Thanks to Wiebke Dittmer for finding on eBay a set in plastic wallets with these promo inserts and discs with a UK promo sticker on the outside of the wallet.
Variant 3 (CD):
Ian Woodward has a UK promo set where the discs, which are the same as the commercial release, have the title "Rolling Thunder" Revised. They are dated "10/8/2002" (8 Oct 2002), but this implies there was an earlier promo with a different track selection! This would be very collectable indeed as the replaced tracks would be rarities. (This may only be the track length differences noted above, however.)
Thanks to Peter Good and Hervé from France for information about these promos and to Franck Faugere and Gerd Rundel for scans.
