"Love And Theft"
(2001)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

US release (2CD set), Columbia Legacy C2K 87047, 26 Nov 2002.

All photographs were taken by Ken Regan.

For the Limited Edition releases with a bonus DVD, see 2002.

This release officially releases one rarity:

R-0137 It Ain't Me, Babe - live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975

This performance was originally released on the 1978 US Columbia promo 12" EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara" (see 1978). Don Handy considers that the performance on this album is different from the performance from the EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara", which he suggests actually comes from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. Both Glen Dundas and Olof Björner confirm the 20 Nov 1975 date on the EP, not 4 Dec 1975

Note the track information on the rear CD insert is incorrect. For Disc One, Track 7 is listed twice, first "at Boston Music Hall (First Show), 11/21/75" (21 Nov 1975) and secondly it says "Track 7 recorded at Memorial Auditorium, Worcester, MA, 11/19/1975" (19 Nov 1975). However, information for Track 7 is missing from the info for Disc Two. The answer is that the first attribution for Track 7 for Disc One is correct but the second attribution for Track 7 belongs to Disc Two - Hurricane is indeed from Worcester!

Georg Thoma points out that Track 9 (Blowin' In The Wind) and Track 10 (Mama, You Been On My Mind) on CD1, both duets with Joan Baez, were originally listed in reverse order on bobdylan.com. However, the recording dates of Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975, and Boston, MA, 21 Nov 1975 (evening show), were not changed on the final insert. Georg claims Joan Baez's spoken intro to Mama, You Been On My Mind is definitely from Cambridge, not Boston, while Blowin' In The Wind is definitely from Boston.

There is a third mistake in the track information: in the booklet notes to Live 75, Larry "Ratso" Sloman says Sara is from the afternoon show at Boston, 21 Nov 1975, witnessed by Sara Dylan, and is one of three songs from that performance. However, on the rear insert of the CD set it gives Sara as being from the evening show (the other two afternoon performances are listed). bobdylan.com also listed Sara as from the evening show, but may only have been copying the CD information rather than the booklet. Thanks to Les Kokay for comparing the two performances and deducing that Sara is in fact from the afternoon performance - Larry's notes are right!

Les says: "After multiple listenings and comparison with the various audience/PA tapes I've finally decided that Sara is not from the evening show but from the afternoon show. The versions are very close, however, I did notice that on the evening show Dylan has a slight stumble over the opening:
"I laid on the dune, I looked at the sky"
Bob sings "I laid on the be.une, I looked at the sky"
It's almost as if he was going to sing 'beach', but changed it to 'dune'. For the afternoon he sings it perfectly, so I'm concluding the Bootleg Series version is afternoon."

I've also been informed that there are differences in the instrumental accompaniment between the afternoon and evening performances, especially at the end of the song, and these prove the released version is definitely from the afternoon. Ian Woodward also interprets Larry Sloman's booklet notes to mean that either Hard Rain or The Water Is Wide is from Cambridge, instead of Montreal and Boston (evening) respectively as listed on the rear of the album. I'd be grateful for confirmation of the sound sources!

These two promo cassettes are housed in a soft plastic wallet with an insert. The outside of the opened wallet shows the front of the insert and the A-sides of the cassettes. The inside of the wallet shows the reverse of the insert with the tracklisting and the B-sides of the cassettes. As far as I know this set was never released commercially on cassette in any country.

For full information, see 2002.

Keith Venturoni adds: "The only difference between the 140 gram and the 200 gram issue of Classics Live 1975 is the sticker on the outside of the box. From the outside the catalogue number is the same. The 200 gram release is a limited edition but not numbered!"

CD Releases (Standard Edition - 2CD)

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue" - promo 2CD sets, Columbia Legacy C2K 87047 (USA), Nov 2002:

Columbia Legacy C2K 87047 (USA)
Two US promo versions of this album exist (as far as I known neither included the bonus DVD):

The first promo was sent out by the record company in early November. The discs were blank, except for wording "Bob Dylan, Bootleg Series 5, Disc One/Two. The CDs came in clear plastic wallets, with printed inserts. There was no artwork. The discs were CD-Rs, created by Sterling Sounds with numbers P 2024060470502 and P 2024081650502.

The second promo was sent out just before the release date with the complete commercial packaging and a white sticker in the upper right corner, with a blue border and blue text:

FOR PROMOTION ONLY
Ownership Reserved By Sony
Sale Is Unlawful
ORAW 34 S1

Information from Tim Dunn, Hervé from France and Sam Plessers.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue" - 2CD set, Columbia Legacy C2K 87047 (USA/Canada), 26 Nov 2002:

Columbia Legacy C2K 87047 (Canada) - CD1 scan by Jack Guerreiro

The printing is of much better quality for the US release than for the European release (shown below), and the booklet is thicker because the paper quality is better! This is illustrated in the photo by Neil Burling showing the differences in thickness of the respective spines.

Thanks to Jack Guerreiro for scans of the Canadian release. The slipcase, booklet and sleeve are made in the USA, the two audio discs and the jewel case inserts were made in Canada. It therefore has the thicker US booklet. The bonus DVD in the Canadian Limited Edition was also made in the USA (see 2002).

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue" - 2CD promo sets, Columbia Legacy SAMPCD 12244 2 (UK), Nov 2002:

Live1975PromoOutsideFront.jpg (20333 bytes)
Columbia Legacy
SAMPCD 12244 2 (UK) - slipcase front scan by Franck Faugere (second promo set)

These are promo CD-R "acetate" sets. The first is from Sony Music Studios, London, and comes in plastic wallets, each with a folded insert, blank on the inside. The second is in a card slipcase containing the two CDs in card sleeves. The artwork on the CD card sleeves is a monochrome version of the commercial release. Hanns Peter Bushoff of BMG Germany adds: "I have a CD-R version of unknown origin with custom-printed discs distributed by “MMX Distribution” (no other artwork or covers) and the (European) Columbia Legacy SAMPCD 12244 2, which in my case has “real” silver CDs with custom-printed “labels” (declaring the discs as promo copies). This later one comes in two b&w (cardboard) art sleeves that are housed in another (cardboard) sleeve with the original colour cover that we know from the stock copy of this album."

The set as described and illustrated here appears to be a genuine Columbia promo. However, some "promos" for auction on eBay may not be genuine - the artwork is not as shown, but seems to be photocopied from the commercial release, and the CD-Rs have fade out/fade in gaps between the tracks. Franck Faugere says there are track length differences between these CDs and the commercial CDs - these are merely caused by the breaks between the songs not being in exactly the same places!

Photo from eBay
Thanks to Wiebke Dittmer for finding on eBay a set of what looks like Gerd Rundel's early promo above, in plastic wallets with the second promo inserts and a UK promo sticker on the outside of the wallet.

Ian Woodward has a UK promo set where the discs, which are the same as the commercial release, have the title "Rolling Thunder" Revised. They are dated "10/8/2002" (8 Oct 2002), but this implies there was an earlier promo with a different track selection! This would be very collectable indeed as the replaced tracks would be rarities. (This may only be the track length differences noted above, however.)

Hervé from France has what appears to be an earlier UK promo on CD-R without catalogue numbers in a plastic sleeve with inserts (the same writing as the UK promo SAMPCD 12244 2) and titles on discs in this format:

BOB DYLAN
The Bootleg Series Vol.5
Bob Dylan Live 1975 / The Rolling Thunder Revue

CD 1 of 2
For Promotional use Only
Not For Resale

Gerd Rundel has the same discs, but in a 2CD jewel case holding both CD-Rs with front and rear inserts.

Thanks to Peter Good and Hervé from France for information about these promos and to Franck Faugere and Gerd Rundel for scans.
