The Essential Bob Dylan (2000)

This page is part of a new section of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and not in the yearly Promo sections.

This page is still incomplete - more entries required. For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Revised 06 May, 2008.

US release, Columbia CK 85975, 11 Sep 2001. The album title, the only one of Bob's album titles to be in quotes, is believed to reference a 1995 book by Eric Lott, "Love & Theft: Blackface Minstrelsy and the American Working Class".

For Limited Editions with a bonus disc, see 2001.

For a Chinese release which may not be authorised see Questionable Releases.

This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SACD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SACD player or a DVD player that also plays SACDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). "Love And Theft" is also available on the SACD in 5.1 surround sound.

"Love And Theft" - hybrid SACD release, Columbia CH 90340 (USA/Canada)/Columbia 512357 6 (Europe), Sep 2003/Sony MHCP 10016 (Japan), 17 Dec 2003:

Columbia 512357 6 (Europe) - outside of digipak

Columbia 512357 6 (Europe) - inside of digipak showing picture behind CD tray
This release is housed in a fold-out digipak and the disc contains a CD version and SACD versions in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. The CD layer is exactly the same as the 2001 release.

There is an 12-page booklet with pictures of Bob from 2001. As can be seen, only the centre page of the hybrid SACD booklet can be said to be new, in that it shows a wider crop of the picture of Bob from the 2001 Limited Edition booklet. The SACD design reproduces a Columbia US vinyl label used in the 1930s. The yellow sticker on the front of the digipak is unique to this release.

"Love And Theft" - remastered CD reissue, Columbia 512357 2 (Europe), 29 Mar 2004:
Fourteen out of the fifteen Dylan albums released in 2003 as hybrid SACD editions were released in the USA and Europe in 2004 as CD-only versions in jewel cases. Although there was no need to replace the existing CD release, "Love And Theft" was also included in this release in Europe only. The fourteen excluding "Love And Theft" were released in Japan in card sleeves.

Reissue series generic sticker on front of jewel case, scan by Andy Jenkins
This release at mid-price is in a standard jewel case and consists of the remastered CD layer only of the 2003 hybrid SACD release above - it is of course exactly the same as the 2001 release! As it has not actually been remastered the sticker is in this case misleading. The front CD insert booklet includes pictures from the SACD booklet. The European release is made in Austria. The CD of this release is plain red as above and (C) 2001 - there is no mention of 2003. The booklet has the new catalogue number.

Information from Andy Jenkins.
