This is a separate multi-year list by release date of commercially-released Various Artist stereo compilation albums released in 1997 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only Bob Dylan performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo-only Various Artist compilation albums with Dylan tracks and Radio Station Albums are included here also. Other International Compilations are now here:

This 95-track 3CD compilation for radio stations from Sony Japan includes a 1:33 excerpt from Like A Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited (the 1996 Japanese release Sony Records SRCS 9074). Because this edit is a rarity this set is also listed in 1997.

This promo compilation CD is a selection of from the ten "The Best Of" compilations released by Sony Records Japan on 21 Jun 1997. Bob appears on two of the albums (see below). His contribution to this sampler is Forever Young, the slow version from Planet Waves by Bob Dylan and The Band, which is actually taken from The Best Of American Rock (Sony Records SRCS 8332), listed below.

This promo CD comes in a CD single jewel case with a folded card insert. The reverse of the insert is plain white.

This compilation CD is one of ten "The Best Of" compilations from Sony Japan that were released on 21 Jun 1997. They all have the same brown obi with black and white text and price ¥2,039. The obi has two dates, the release date "97-6-21" (21 Jun 1997) and the withdrawal date "99.6.20" (20 Jun 1999).

Bob's contribution is Forever Young, the slow version from Planet Waves by Bob Dylan and The Band. The album also contains My Back Pages by The Byrds. Bob also appears on The Best Of Singer Songwriter, SRCS 8335 below, but not on the other eight compilations. The copy shown is a promo, with a promo panel on the rear insert and the text "SAMPLE" on the clear centre of the CD.

This compilation CD is the second of ten "The Best Of" compilations from Sony Japan that were released on 21 Jun 1997 to include Bob. They all have the same brown obi with black and white text and price ¥2,039.

Bob's contribution is Property Of Jesus from Shot Of Love (as far as I know this is the only time this track has appeared on a Various Artists Compilation). Bob also appears on The Best Of American Rock, SRCS 8332 above, but not on the other eight compilations.

This 16-track compilation for radio stations from Sony Japan includes Like A Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited. The track is timed at 6:08 instead of the expected 5:59/6:00 and plays at 6:08. The CD jewel case insert cover features a cartoon of Coolio.

The interior features monochrome reproductions of each of the album covers from which these tracks are taken, plus a short comment on each in Japanese. The rear insert has the track listings in Japanese and English. The title is a word play on the then current Sony advertising slogan for their audio/video products "It's a Sony"! This album includes Like A Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited. The CD has a green, cream and white obi with black and yellow text and price ¥2,548. The obi and rear sleeve are dated "97-7-21" (21 Jul 1997) with a withdrawal date of "99-7-20" (20 Jul 1999). The CD has the text "SAMPLE" in the clear centre.

"Groovy Rock Caravan" was a group of Japanese music writers, artists ands DJs who compiled this CD. Their names are listed on the obi and the reverse of the rear insert, and include the famous Japanese cartoonist and Dylan fan Jun Miura, who compiled the promo 2CD compilation Dylan Ga Rock (see 1993 and 2010), and also compiled the soundtrack album for the 2003 independent Japanese movie "Iden & Tity", see Dylan-only Compilations 2000s, based on a series of comic books by Jun Miura. Jun Miura also used this artwork for the Japanese edition of The Essential Bob Dylan, see 2000. Jun Miura also created the artwork for the Japanese release of The Best Of Bob Dylan, see 1997, and the 2003 Japanese release of The Essential Bob Dylan, see International Album Releases.

Bob's contribution to the third in this series of Sixties compilations was Subterranean Homesick Blues from Bringing It All Back Home. His contribution to the fourth compilation was Lay, Lady, Lay from Nashville Skyline. Bill Hester also gives the catalogue numbers as Virgin VTDCD 160 (III) and Virgin VTDCD 216 (IV). amazon.co.uk gives the release dates as 10 Nov 1997 for the third compilation and 3 Nov 1997 for the fourth, which must be wrong as the fourth has later catalogue numbers.
