US release, Columbia CK 68556, 27 Sep 1997 For an Australian Tour 1998 Limited Edition with a bonus disc, see 1998. This title was one of the fifteen Dylan albums scheduled for release in late 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD, probably not only in stereo but also in 5.1 surround sound. It was removed from the final schedule and the hybrid SA-CD version remains unreleased. |
The remix of Love Sick on the Mar 2004 Limited Edition US Dylan compilation Victoria's Secret Exclusive: Lovesick (see 2004) is slightly longer and has a much cleaner sound than on the original Time Out Of Mind album, and it's possible it comes from the as yet unreleased remixed/remastered 2003 album.
The version of Not Dark Yet on the Aug 2006 Limited Edition US CD single of Rollin' And Tumblin' (see 2006) also appears to be remastered, and may be from this version of the album too.
Daniel Lanois said of the Time Out Of Mind sessions that Bob left his (Daniel's) favourite tracks off the album - these out-takes have been rumoured for a long time: Out-takes from the album will finally be released in Oct 2008.
The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs (2008): Mississippi (three unreleased takes of original version - released in 2001 on "Love And Theft" in a new recording), Red River Shore (two takes of the rumoured unreleased song); Can't Wait (alternate take); Dreamin' Of You (unreleased song not previously known to collectors plus a radio edit R-0354, see 2008); Marchin' To The City (two takes of unreleased song not previously known to collectors)
Other out-takes rumoured are Not Dark Yet – a reputedly stunning alternate version, better than the released take, and Highlands – a version reputed to last for 27 minutes!

This single CD album was released on vinyl as a 2LP set, in a wide single outer sleeve with the records themselves in two picture inner sleeves. The artwork is much larger than on the CD release. The records have brown "1930s style 78rpm" Columbia labels with the logo "Vivatonal Recording". The eleven songs were divided up with four on side 1, three each on sides 2 and 3, and Highlands on its own on side 4, just like Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands had been on Blonde On Blonde! |

The inner sleeves of Gerd Rundel's US copy of Columbia C2 68556 do not have the cut-outs as on the rear sides of the Dutch inner sleeves (see below). The records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 68983-2A, Side 2 - BL 68983-2A, Side 3 - AL 68984-2A, Side 4 - BL 68984-2A.

The eleven songs were divided up with seven on the A-side
and four including Highlands on the B-side. Both cassettes are clear
plastic with white text, there are no paper labels. The European cassette
was made in Holland. Picture 2 appears to be from around 1974, since two pictures from the same session are now used in the Sep 2003 hybrid SA-CD edition of Blood On The Tracks. Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans of the US cassette. |

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for finding this copy on eBay with the records in transparent blue vinyl. It is almost certainly unauthorised by Columbia. Carl Torstensson has a copy with the records pressed in mottled blue vinyl. Unfortunately Hans Seegers says these are again fakes made in Germany without authorisation from Columbia. Thanks to Wiebke Dittmer for finding copies on eBay with "old gold" mottled vinyl and green vinyl. Again these are fakes. The sleeves look authentic but are made of inferior material.

This official Bulgarian Columbia release was manufactured and distributed by Vitosha Entertainment of Sofia on behalf of Sony Music. It has a folded insert. The cassette is transparent grey with white text, there are no paper labels.

Unlike the US CD, this CD comes in a black plastic tray, so there is no picture on the reverse of the rear insert. Pictures 4 and 5 from the 2LP set artwork are therefore missing. The CD is the original blue US style.

Thanks to Wil Gielen for the information that the five free promotional postcards shown were given away with early commercial copies of the album that did not have the "ALBUM OF THE YEAR" front sticker - the copy with the sticker was on sale later and did not have the postcards. The promo copy of the album comes in a plain white card sleeve with a black insert with white text. The insert has only the track listing and the text "Not for resale - property of Sony Music Entertainment (Australia) Limited". The CD itself is blue and similar to the US and European CDs above. The first commercial release of the regular Australian album had a completely different CD with a standard red Columbia design. The 2000s release used the same design as the promo disc and the Limited Edition CD with a black centre ring.

This CD release in a DVD case came as no. 12 of a series sold with
"Sport" magazine at the low price of €1.99. The next CD in the series is
from Johnny Cash and June Carter, dated 23 Feb 2010, so I date this as late

This 5CD set was given away with the Greek
newspaper "Eleftherotypia [Free Press]". Each album is from a different
decade: 1960s - Blonde On Blonde, 1970s - Blood On the Tracks,
1980s - Infidels, 1990s - Time Out of Mind, 2000s - Modern
Times. Each CD came in a card sleeve and there was also a five panel card
sleeve to hold the five CDs if you collected all of them. The card sleeves were
