This page lists Bob Dylan stereo promotional singles in all formats from 1980 to 1989. They do not contain rarities, but are none the less very collectable. All the singles included here were released exclusively for promotional purposes - promotional releases of commercially released singles that don't contain rarities are listed on the various US & International Stereo Singles & EPs pages, see International Stereo Releases. For illustrations of all the generic 7" single sleeves used by Bob's record companies from the 1960s onwards, see the 7" Single Sleeves page. (A single has much less value to a collector if it doesn't have its correct original sleeve.) For earlier and later promotional singles, see the links above.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the
dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

"Union Sundown"/"Licence To Kill" - two-sided acetate, CBS (no catalogue number) (UK), Nov 1983:
![]() A-side scan by Hans Seegers |
This very rare double-sided acetate is unique in that it was not
released commercially in this form. The B-side of this record (labelled
"B45") was replaced by the Infidels out-take Angel Flying Too
Close to the Ground (R-0156) and has indeed been crossed out. The replacement
B-side on a separate acetate (labelled "B452") is shown for
completeness. For the commercial UK single, see

"Jokerman"/"License To Kill" - 7" promo singles, CBS A 4055 (UK/Spain), Apr 1984:
|
CBS A4055 (Spanish promo) - front of sleeve (my copy) |
These European singles have a 4:30 edit of the A-side, for full details, see 1984. The regular singles have the full album version (6:12), so can be found in International Singles & EPs 1980s. The Jokerman song length is misprinted as 4:00 but it is actually 4:30 (I played it and timed it!). I can only assume that the intention was to use the US 4:05 edit, see the US promo single below. |

"Silvio" - 12" copper single master, Precision Lacquer/CBS Records (USA), 11 Dec 1987:
![]() Label scan by Arie de Reus |
There has been some speculation about Silvio being about the Cuban
singer Silvio Rodriguez, but Robert Hunter (who wrote the lyrics) says
not. This single-sided copper master plays the album track from Down In The Groove at 331/3 RPM and is dated "12/11/87". For a 1988 black vinyl promo single, see below. For the commercial 7" single with Driftin' Too Far From Shore as the B-side, see US & International 7" & 12" Stereo Singles & EPs 1980-89. Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans. |

For a 1987 copper master of this track, see above. This single plays the album track from Down In The Groove on both sides.
It comes in a colourful generic card outer sleeve with a cut-out for the
label and a black sticker with white/red text. The promo information on
the sticker highlights the fact that Silvio is a Dylan/Grateful Dead
co-operation, with Robert Hunter (the Grateful Dead's lyricist) providing
the lyrics, and Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Brent Mydland from the Grateful
Dead playing on the track. (The Dylan And The Dead live album from
shows in Jul 1987 was eventually released in Jan 1989).

The date is shown as "06/07/88" (6 Jul 1988). The length of Driftin' Too Far From Shore is given correctly as 3:38. The 12" acetate has stock labels from CBS's London Mastering Studios, with handwritten titles, and came in a plain black sleeve with the CBS London recording studios address (shown below).
