This is the fifth part of a separate multi-year list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far.

This page is still incomplete. If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Canadian "4 Play" EP by The Byrds

Australian "Four Play" EP by The Byrds

This four-track "Greatest Hits" stereo 7" EP plays at 331/3 r.p.m. and includes Like A Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 from Blonde On Blonde, Lay, Lady, Lay from Nashville Skyline and Knockin' On Heaven's Door from Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid. All four tracks are the full album versions.

Thanks to Manual Garcia Jara for information and scans. Manuel has other EPs in this "4 Play" series from both Canada and Australia, and thinks there may be an Australian version of this Dylan EP, although Hans Seegers thinks not.

"Knockin' On Heaven's Door '73-'78" - 7" promo stereo EP, CBS PRO 415 (NL), Sep 1987:

KnockinEPNLFront.jpg (17754 bytes)
CBS PRO 415 (NL) - promo EP front sleeve scan by Hans Seegers
This 1987 promo EP had three versions of Knockin' On Heaven's Door: Side 1 had the original 1973 version from the Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid soundtrack

Side 2 had two live versions of the song, track 1 from Before The Flood from 1974, and track 2 from Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978.

For other 7" singles containing this song see 1973, US & International 7" Singles & EPs 1973 and US & International 7" and 12" Singles & EPs 1979. Note previous single releases had the 1960s-early 1970s orange CBS labels, and the late 1970s-early 1980s red/yellow labels. This EP has the later red label with white CBS logo.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"The Usual" - 7" and 12" promo and commercial singles, CBS 651148 7 (7"), CBS 651148 6 (12") (UK/NL/Spain/Portugal), 5 Oct 1987:

UsualUKAcetate.jpg (19246 bytes)

For full details of these singles, the A-side of which was a rarity from the Hearts Of Fire soundtrack album, see 1987.

"Silvio" - 12" copper single master, Precision Lacquer/CBS Records (USA), 11 Dec 1987:

Label scan by Arie de Reus
There has been some speculation about Silvio being about the Cuban singer Silvio Rodriguez, but Robert Hunter (who wrote the lyrics) says not.

This single-sided copper master plays the album track from Down In The Groove at 331/3 RPM and is dated "12/11/87". For a 1988 black vinyl promo single, see below.

For the 1988 commercial 7" single with Driftin' Too Far From Shore as the B-side, see below.

Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans.

"Silvio" - promo 12" single, Columbia CAS 02903 (USA), May 1988:

SilvioUS12PromoFront.JPG (38053 bytes)
Columbia CAS 02903 (USA) - single in sleeve (my copy)
For a 1987 copper master of this track, see above. This single plays the album track from Down In The Groove on both sides. It comes in a colourful generic card outer sleeve with a cut-out for the label and a black sticker with white/red text. The promo information on the sticker highlights the fact that Silvio is a Dylan/Grateful Dead co-operation, with Robert Hunter (the Grateful Dead's lyricist) providing the lyrics, and Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Brent Mydland from the Grateful Dead playing on the track. (The Dylan And The Dead live album from shows in Jul 1987 was eventually released in Jan 1989).

For the commercial 7" single with Driftin' Too Far From Shore as the B-side, see below.

Silvio7MexPromo.JPG (24270 bytes)

This rare promo single plays the album track from Down In The Groove on both sides.

It comes in a generic plastic CBS sleeve, see 7" Single Sleeves.

"Silvio"/"Driftin' Too Far From Shore" - 7" stereo single, Columbia 38-07970 (USA), Jun 1988:

Silvio7USA.jpg (21066 bytes)
Columbia 38-07970 (USA) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers
Both tracks are the album versions from Down In The Groove and Knocked Out Loaded. For a 1988 US promo single with Silvio on both sides, see above.

Note that on the second variant of the B-side the length is shown incorrectly as 3:10 - the first variant is correct at 3:38. This mistake was repeated on the UK promo single, see below, and several other worldwide releases.

Silvio7USB1.jpg (21047 bytes)
Columbia 38-07970 (USA) - B-side scan by Hans Seegers (first variant, correctly timed at 3:38)
Silvio7USB2.jpg (19746 bytes)
Columbia 38-07970 (USA) - B-side scan by Hans Seegers (second variant, incorrectly timed at 3:10)

This single is noteworthy because it is actually the last vinyl "current" commercial Bob Dylan single to be released in the USA. Apart from re-releases in the 1990s of the Columbia Hall Of Fame singles featuring songs from the 1960s and early 1970s, all other singles (vinyl or CD) released in the USA have been promo only. They were produced for the music industry only, or available to the public only as part of promotions for Dylan albums. For 1988 US and UK promos of this single, see above. For international stereo releases of this single, see below.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

The 10" acetate for the 7" single has stock labels from the US company Precision Lacquer, with "CBS Records" and other information typewritten. The date is shown as "06/07/88" (6 Jul 1988).  The length of Driftin' Too Far From Shore is given correctly as 3:38.  The 12" acetate has stock labels from CBS's London Mastering Studios, with handwritten titles, and came in a plain black sleeve with the CBS London recording studios address (shown below). The length of Driftin' Too Far From Shore is given incorrectly as 3:10. For the UK commercial single, CBS 651406, see below. For a 1988 USA 12" promo single with Silvio alone, see above.

Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans of the 10" acetate and to Hans Seegers for information and scans of the 12" acetate.

More information and pictures of 3" Bob Dylan CDs (all of which are very collectable) are required!

For links to the other Columbia "Hall Of Fame" singles, see Columbia Hall Of Fame.

This is as far as I know the only commercial Bob Dylan CD single that has been released in the USA! There have been many promo CD singles, and these are now listed on the appropriate 1990s and 2000s pages of this International Singles list.

"Everything Is Broken" - test pressings, CBS (no catalogue number) (France), Oct 1989:

First variant - label scan from eBay
These are single-sided records with silver-grey labels in plain white sleeves.

Thanks to Raoul Verolleman for finding the first variant on eBay France and to Hans Seegers and Dag Braathen for the other variants and for extra details. The single shown on the left is an unusual item for CBS France in that "TEST PRESSING" is in English.

For commercial singles which included a rare live performance of Dead Man, Dead Man, see 1989.

"Everything Is Broken"/"Death Is Not The End" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS 655358 7 (UK/NL/Australia), 23 Oct 1989:

EIBUKAcetate.jpg (25275 bytes)
UK acetate A-side scan by Hans Seegers
The A-side of the 7" single was from Oh Mercy and the B-side was from Down In The Groove. The UK acetate has stock labels with handwritten titles. The Dutch single was exported to many mainland Europe countries, including Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Scandinavia. A German promotional letter is shown below.

For CD and 12" singles with a rarity, see 1989. For 1989 promo singles with the title track alone alone, see above.

The German promotional letter (right) is dated "16.9.89", over a month before the single was actually released. It's interesting in that it translates the A-side title as "Alles Kaputt" and wrongly gives the Daniel Lanois studio location for the Oh Mercy recordings as Memphis, TN (it was actually recorded in New Orleans, LA).
