This is the fifth part of a separate multi-year list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far.

This page is still incomplete. If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

"Gotta Serve Somebody"/"Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking" - 7" singles, CBS 8134 (NL), 31 Dec 1979/CBS 8134 (France), Jan 1980/S CBS 8134 (UK), 18 Jan 1980:

GottaServeFrFront.jpg (22813 bytes)
CBS 8134 (France) - front scan by Hans Seegers

Gotta Serve Somebody is mistakenly listed as being the 3:57 edited version issued on other singles (R-0148, see 1979), but it is in fact the 5:23 full version! Thanks to Hans Seegers for notifying me of this error.

Even though they had the same catalogue number as the Spanish single shown in 1979, these versions of CBS 8134 had Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking (album version) as the B-side. The UK single had no picture sleeve.

There is a Dec 1979 French test pressing of CBS 8134 that correctly shows the timing of Gotta Serve Somebody as 5:23 - see Promotional Singles 1970-79. The first French single has "injection" labels - in this case a thin brown plastic ring-shaped layer is injected into the record itself, and the text/graphics are cut out using a stamp so that the black vinyl underneath shows through, there is no paper label. The second has standard CBS orange/yellow paper labels

CBS A1640 (UK) - withdrawn sleeve with "Lennie" misprint, front scan by Michael Gray

CBS A1640 (UK) - withdrawn sleeve with "Lennie" misprint, rear scan by Michael Gray

This UK single also exists as a very rare variation with the title on the sleeve misspelled as "Lennie". These were withdrawn before release when the mistake was discovered, but some copies "escaped" into the public domain, as the one from Michael Gray shown. The single inside is correct. No other countries have this variant because it was unintended!

Hans Seegers has a unique proof copy of the artwork for this misprint sleeve - it is a single sheet of white card approx. 14" x 21½", with black printing and an annotated sheet of tracing paper in front, plus a cover sheet. The rear of the sheet is black with the "CS10" design shown - this is the name of the manufacturer of the card, not the printers, whose name doesn't appear.

Thanks to Michael Gray and Hans Seegers for information and scans.

This translation of "Watered-Down Love" causes amusement amongst Spanish speakers - "Amor Submarino" means "Underwater Love"! A closer translation of "watered-down" would be "diluido" (diluted).

"Tight Connection To My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love?)"/"We Better Talk This Over" - 7" single, CBS A 6303 (UK/NL/Spain); CBS/Sony 07SP 901 (Japan); CBS 8669 (Mexico), 24 May 1985:
For the Tight Connection video release on laserdisc, see the VHS & DVD 1980s page.

Tight7UKFront.JPG (28359 bytes)
CBS A 6303 (UK) - front (my copy)

This single was previously on the 1985 page, because the A-side was reported to be a single edit. However, these commercial 7" singles do not contain a rarity because the song is 5:20, identical to the Empire Burlesque album track. For the singles that do have the 3:45 edited version, see 1985.

The B-side of this single was We Better Talk This Over, the regular album track from 1978's Street-Legal (a strange choice, another track from Empire Burlesque would have been expected).

Other countries where this single was released with the 5.20 version: Holland, Italy regular and jukebox promo, Mexico, Spain regular and promo, USA regular and South Africa regular- more information/catalogue numbers and scans required! Also there is a 12" USA promo single with the 5:20 version both sides. Thanks to Patrick Helfrich for scans of the Italian regular single.

Information from Hans Seegers, who adds that the track length is actually 5:19 - only the South African single shows it correctly! The Spanish promo single found in Promotional Singles 1980s came in the same sleeve as the commercial release with a promo stamp on the rear sleeve.

The Japanese single shown is a promo with a yellow radio station library ticket label more scans required!

Thanks to Ronald Born for scans of the Mexican single CBS 8669 - it came in a generic CBS sleeve. The titles are translated as "Circa De Mi Corazon" and "Cambiemos De Tema".

This very rare Zimbabwe single looks like a promo but is actually an official CBS commercial release. This cheaply-printed label style was also used for several Zimbabwe Dylan LPs. There are no track times, but this is the full-length version of the song, not the edit.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

Both tracks are the regular album versions. The 7" single has an edited version of the A-side, see 1985 for this and all other international singles with these two tracks.

Thanks to David Burgess for information about this item, and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans. I previously stated that this 12" single was also released in Holland, but it can only have been sold there as an import.

"Emotionally Yours"/"Clean Cut Kid" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS BA 3393 (Australia/New Zealand), 30 Jan 1986:

EmYrsAusPromoFront.JPG (22345 bytes)
CBS BA 3393 (Australia) - front of promo sleeve
The Australian white label promo (my copy) is a "Limited Edition Tour Single" for the Feb/Mar 1986 tour of Australia with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. The back of the sleeve shows the tour dates.

The B-side of the single is Clean Cut Kid, also from Empire Burlesque. Both tracks are the full-length album versions. The Australian commercial release and the New Zealand releases came without a picture sleeve. The New Zealand promo has a white sticker on the A-side.

Thanks to Bill Hester for the information on this last Dylan 7" single to be issued by CBS in New Zealand. (The only later releases were by the Travelling Wilburys on Warner Bros, released in New Zealand but manufactured in Australia.)

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

The Italian single was actually made in Holland and has a "needle stamp" through the sleeve with the words "CAMPIONE GRATUITO" (Free Sample). Both tracks are the regular album versions.

Thanks to Manfred Endtner for information about and scans of the Italian promo single and to Hans Seegers for information about and scans of the Dutch commercial single.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information about the Australian release, CBS BA 3471, which came in both promo and commercial generic sleeves, see  7" Single Sleeves. The A-side was mistitled as "I've Got My Mind Made Up".

This rarity is not only one of the very few CBS releases exclusive to Costa Rica, but also the only 7" outing for You Wanna Ramble! Both tracks are the regular album versions.

This single came in a standard CBS sleeve for Costa Rica, see 7" Single Sleeves.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for scans and information. Hans also has a copy of this single with a blue promo stamp on the A-side.

"Silvio"/"Driftin' Too Far From Shore" - 7" stereo single, Columbia 38-07970 (USA), Jun 1988:

Silvio7USA.jpg (21066 bytes)
Columbia 38-07970 (USA) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers
Both tracks are the album versions from Down In The Groove and Knocked Out Loaded. For a 1988 US promo single with Silvio on both sides, see Promotional Singles 1980-89.

Note that on the second variant of the B-side the length is shown incorrectly as 3:10 - the first variant is correct at 3:38. This mistake was repeated on the UK promo single, see below, and several other worldwide releases.

Silvio7USB1.jpg (21047 bytes)

Silvio7USB2.jpg (19746 bytes)
Columbia 38-07970 (USA) - B-side scan by Hans Seegers (second variant, incorrectly timed at 3:10)

This single is noteworthy because it is actually the last vinyl "current" commercial Bob Dylan single to be released in the USA. Apart from re-releases in the 1990s of the Columbia Hall Of Fame singles featuring songs from the 1960s and early 1970s, all other singles (vinyl or CD) released in the USA have been promo only. They were produced for the music industry only, or available to the public only as part of promotions for Dylan albums. For 1988 US and UK promos of this single, see Promotional Singles 1980-89. For international stereo releases of this single, see below.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

More information and pictures of 3" Bob Dylan CDs (all of which are very collectable) are required!

For links to the other Columbia "Hall Of Fame" singles, see Columbia Hall Of Fame.

This is as far as I know the only commercial Bob Dylan CD single that has been released in the USA! There have been many promo CD singles, and these are listed in Promotional Singles 1990-99 and Promotional Singles 2000-.

The A-side of the 7" single was from Oh Mercy and the B-side was from Down In The Groove. The Dutch single was exported to many mainland Europe countries, including Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Scandinavia. A German promotional letter is shown below.

The German promotional letter (left) is dated "16.9.89", over a month before the single was actually released. It's interesting in that it translates the A-side title as "Alles Kaputt" and wrongly gives the Daniel Lanois studio location for the Oh Mercy recordings as Memphis, TN (it was actually recorded in New Orleans, LA).

The Australian single shown on right came in promotional and commercial versions in standard CBS sleeves, see 7" Single Sleeves.
