This is part of a list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles and EPs for 1978 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. Singles released in this time period exclusively for promotional purposes are now here also. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far.
This page is still incomplete. If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the
dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised 01 January, 2009.
Bob Dylan and The Rolling Thunder Revue - "4 Songs From "Renaldo And Clara" " - promo 12" single, Columbia AS 422 (USA), Jan 1978:
![]() Columbia AS 422 (USA) - detail of front cover, plain buff with this sticker and "Demonstration" stamp only (my copy) |
This promo 12" single contains four live tracks, all of which were rarities at the time. As two songs remain rarities, full details are in 1978. |
"Baby Stop Crying" - promo 7" single, Columbia 3-10805 (USA), 31 Jul 1978:
![]() Columbia 3-10805 (US promo) - scan by Hans Seegers |
This promo single contains both a radio edit and the full-length version of the title track. Because the edit is a rarity, full details are in 1978. |
"Baby Stop Crying"/"New Pony" - 7" stereo single, Columbia 3-10805 (USA), 31 Jul 1978:
![]() Columbia 3-10805 (USA) - A-side of promo and commercial versions, scan by Hans Seegers |
Both tracks were the standard album versions from Street-Legal. For a promo release of this single with a 4:17 edit of the A-side (this single has it as 5:17), see 1978. The single was also released as a promo with a "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" stamp on the B-side over the "COLUMBIA" logo. For worldwide commercial releases of this single with the same two tracks, see below. Information and scans from Hans Seegers. |

"Baby Stop Crying"/"We Better Talk This Over" - 7" singles, CBS 6697 (Holland for Europe/West Germany), Jun 1978:
![]() CBS 6697 (West Germany) - front scan by Hans Seegers (promo release) |
Both tracks are the regular versions from Street-Legal. The West German promo in the "CBS-Blitzinformation" sleeve is the only Dylan promo with this orange/yellow design. For the sleeves of the various West German promo singles with the previous red/white promo design, see yearly pages from 1971 onwards. Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information that my copy (shown below) was made in Heemstede, Holland, but not actually sold in that country. It was distributed Europe-wide to countries that didn't release their own local version. He says: "Your 'Dutch' rear sleeve was never released in Holland. It was made in Heemstede, Holland, but only for export to all European countries who did not made it themselves and ordered it from CBS International in Heemstede. Your rear sleeve comes with a sticker "CB 111" over the printed "EC (in a circle)"." Máximo Díaz Peña has a Spanish copy of CBS 6697 in a plain white sleeve. It is mislabelled in that it has the same A-side label on both sides, even though the vinyl plays correctly. Hans Seegers informs me there are two label variants:
The
mislabelled single is of the first type. For the variants, see below. |

Both tracks are the regular studio versions from Street-Legal. The promo 7" single has buff CBS labels with a large red "A" on the A-side, the commercial 7" and 12" singles have orange/yellow labels. The photograph from which this 12" single artwork was derived was used in 2001 for a UK promotional CD single to celebrate Bob's 60th birthday called The Voice Of Every Generation, see 2001. Information and scans of 7" singles from Hans Seegers, Kenneth Robson and Ronald Born. |

"Changing Of The Guards"/"Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power)" - 7" promo and commercial singles, Columbia 3-10851 (USA), 24 Oct 1978:
![]() Columbia 3-10851 (USA) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers (R-0147) |
This single had a 3:39 edit of the A-side (R-0147), so full details can be found in
1978. Information and scan from Hans Seegers. |
"Love Minus Zero/No Limit"/"Is Your Love In Vain" - 7" promo single, CBS BA 222534 (Australia), Nov 1978:
"Changing Of The Guards" - 7" jukebox singles, CBS JC 117/118 (Italy), Dec 1978:
Peter Denzler says: "JC 117 has an edit of Changing Of The Guards, which I think to be unique; it is not the single edit, but a fade out of the album version, fading out 38 seconds early at 5:58 mins." Although the record label lists the song as 6:36 - the then standard length - Nol Grint confirms it is 5:58. The edit is now included as a rarity in 1978. (His copy has a plain white B-side label with handwritten information but the side still plays R-0765. Does JC 118 also have the faded version?
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Peter Denzler and Nol Grint for information and scans.
"Is Your Love In Vain?"/"Changing Of The Guards" - 7" single, CBS 6524 (France), Dec 1978:
![]() CBS 6524 (France) - front scan by Hans Seegers |
This rare single was manufactured in Holland for
export to France. Both tracks are from the Street-Legal
album. This single has the full length version of Changing Of The Guards on
the B-side (6:36). For worldwide 7" singles with a 3:39 radio edit of Changing
Of The Guards, see 1978. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

![]() S CBS 6935 (UK) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers |
Both tracks are the regular studio versions from Street-Legal.
The B-side has a misprint on the word "Señor" -
the tilde over the "n" to make "ñ" is misplaced to over the "e"! For a UK promo 7" single with the same catalogue number with both full length and edited versions of the A-side, see 1978. Information and scans from Hans Seegers. |
