This is part of a separate multi-year list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles and EPs for 1977-79 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far.

This page is still incomplete. If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Bob Dylan and The Rolling Thunder Revue - "4 Songs From "Renaldo And Clara" " - promo 12" single, Columbia AS 422 (USA), Jan 1978:

Columbia AS 422 (USA) - detail of front cover, plain buff with this sticker and "Demonstration" stamp only (my copy)
This promo 12" single contains four live tracks, all of which were rarities at the time. As two songs remain rarities, full details are in 1978.

"Baby Stop Crying"/"New Pony" - 7" stereo single, Columbia 3-10805 (USA), 31 Jul 1978:

Columbia 3-10805 (USA) - A-side of promo and commercial versions, scan by Hans Seegers

Both tracks were the standard album versions from Street-Legal. For a promo release of this single with a 4:17 edit of the A-side (this single has it as 5:17), see 1978.

The single was also released as a promo with a "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" stamp on the B-side over the "COLUMBIA" logo.

For worldwide commercial releases of this single with the same two tracks, see below.

Information and scans from Hans Seegers.

"Baby Stop Crying"/"We Better Talk This Over" - 7" singles, CBS 6697 (Holland for Europe/West Germany), Jun 1978:

CBS 6697 (West Germany) - front scan by Hans Seegers (promo release)
Both tracks are the regular versions from Street-Legal.

The West German promo in the "CBS-Blitzinformation" sleeve is the only Dylan promo with this orange/yellow design. For the sleeves of the various West German promo singles with the previous red/white promo design, see yearly pages from 1971 onwards.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information that my copy (shown below) was made in Heemstede, Holland, but not actually sold in that country. It was distributed Europe-wide to countries that didn't release their own local version. He says: "Your 'Dutch' rear sleeve was never released in Holland. It was made in Heemstede, Holland, but only for export to all European countries who did not made it themselves and ordered it from CBS International in Heemstede. Your rear sleeve comes with a sticker "CB 111" over the printed "EC (in a circle)"."

Máximo Díaz Peña has a Spanish copy of CBS 6697 in a plain white sleeve. It is mislabelled in that it has the same A-side label on both sides, even though the vinyl plays correctly.  Hans Seegers informs me there are two label variants:

  1. "è CBS Inc. 1978" above "Depósito Legal" on side 1.
  2. "è CBS Inc. 1978" below "M-39248-1978" on side 1.

The mislabelled single is of the first type. For the variants, see below.

"Baby Stop Crying"/"New Pony" - 7" promo and commercial singles - S CBS 6499 (UK/Ireland)/12" single - CBS 12-6499 (UK), 14 Jul 1978; CBS/Sony 06SP 241 (Japan), Jul 1978; CBS BA 222441 Australia); CBS BA 461884 (New Zealand), Jul 1978:

S CBS 6499 (UK) - 7" test pressing, A-side scan by Nol Grint (the B-side label is plain white although the side does play New Pony)
Both tracks are the regular studio versions from Street-Legal.

The Limited Edition Special 12" Single, CBS 12-6499, had a picture sleeve and paper labels.

The 7" promo single has buff CBS paper labels with a large red "A" on the A-side. Ronald Born has supplied scans of three copies of the commercial single with different label designs - the A-side of the third copy is exactly the same as the A-side of the second copy, so is not shown. Hans Seegers informs me that there are also copies of the commercial 7" single with "STEREO" on the A-side only, plus copies with injection labels, which could be in either dark-red or brown plastic (the difference on scanning is too small to show). For the equivalent US 7" single, Columbia 3-10805, see above.

Information and scans of the promo 7" single from Hans Seegers, information and scans of the commercial 7" singles from Ronald Born. Thanks also to Nol Grint for the test pressing and sticker scans.

The Irish 7" single of CBS 6499 exits unbelievably in four variations. As the first and second are similar, only the variant text is shown. The differences all concern the test to the right of the centre hole. As can be seen, the placement and alignment of the text element differed widely!

Three copies of the Japanese release CBS/Sony 06SP 241 are shown: the first has white promo labels, the second has the orange commercial labels but with a promo stamp, and the third is the regular commercial release.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans about the UK, Irish and Japanese variants.

This rare single was manufactured in Holland for export to France. Both tracks are from the Street-Legal album. This single has the full length version of Changing Of The Guards on the B-side (6:36). For worldwide 7" singles with a 3:39 radio edit of Changing Of The Guards, see 1978.

S CBS 6935 (UK) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers
Both tracks are the regular studio versions from Street-Legal. The B-side has a misprint on the word "Señor" - the tilde over the "n" to make "ñ" is misplaced to over the "e"!

For a UK promo 7" single with the same catalogue number with both full length and edited versions of the A-side, see 1978.

"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"I Threw It All Away" - 7" stereo singles in "Golden Decade 1967-76" series, S CBS 7071 (UK), Jun 1979 onwards:
This series of 20 singles by 20 artists had Bob as number 17. This stereo single in fact combines two original mono A-sides, as the original mono singles had Lay, Lay, Lay backed by Peggy Day and I Threw It All Away backed by Drifter's Escape, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs: 1969.

S CBS 7071 (UK) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers (first variant, first pressing plant)

There are two label variants, but the first one without the "LC" capsule at upper right was produced on two different pressing plants, and was released in Jun 1979. The second variant (with the LC capsule) was released between the end of June 1979 and September 1979.

Forever Young/All Along The Watchtower/I Want You (all live, CBS S 7473, see below) was released on 22 Jun 1979 and came without the LC capsule. This was the last one without. The first regular single with the LC capsule was Precious Angel/Trouble In Mind; release date 31 Aug 1979 (again, see below).

There were two sleeve variants with different gold coloured printing. (I assume the "faded" looking sleeve goes with the "faded" looking single from the first pressing plant.)

Budokan7FrFront.jpg (27578 bytes)
CBS 7468 (France) - front scan by Hans Seegers
Both tracks are live versions from the Bob Dylan At Budokan album.

This record has "injection" labels - in this case a thin brown plastic ring-shaped layer is injected into the record itself, and the text/graphics are cut out using a stamp so that the black vinyl underneath shows through, there is no paper label. There are two colour variants: the first is a burnt ochre colour and the second is more like red ochre (this may be due to production issues rather than deliberate policy, since other injection singles occur with colour variants too). "Watchtower" is misspelled as "WATCHOWER" on each B-side.

"El Hombre Le Dio Nombre A Todo Los Animales [Man Gave Names To All The Animals]"/"Cuando El Regrese [When He Returns]" - 7" test pressing, promo and commercial singles, Columbia 23.119 (Argentina), 1979:

Columbia 23.119 (Argentina) - test pressing A-side scan by Hans Seegers (promo single)
These singles had no picture sleeve. The test pressing has a Discos CBS red/orange label with rubber-stamped text in Spanish. The B-side is blank with a plain white label. The promo and commercial records have red Columbia labels with the yellow Columbia logo in a ring. The promo single has the extra text "DISCO PROMOCIONAL PROHIBIDA LE VENTA [PROMOTIONAL DISC SALE PROHIBITED]" on two lines above "BOB DYLAN".

For the test pressing and the promo single the standard CBS Argentina sleeves are stamped with "DISCO PARA DEMOSTRACION VENTA PROHIBIDA [DEMONSTRATION DISC SALE PROHIBITED]" on two lines on the promo single. For pictures of the sleeves used for these releases, together with the regular sleeve used for commercial singles, see 7" Single Sleeves.
