Knockin' On Heaven's Door - rare Japanese 7" stereo single, 1973
This is part of a separate multi-year list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles and EPs for 1970-73 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! (As far as I know, no 12" singles were released in this time period.) Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far (I don't think any belong to this time period).
This page is still incomplete. If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the
dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised 12 April, 2008.

"Nashville Skyline" - 7"stereo EP, CBS SBG
225223 (Australia), Feb 1970:
All tracks are the regular stereo versions from Nashville Skyline.
For earlier stereo EPs from this album, see
Stereo 7" Singles & EPs 1960s.
"Wigwam"/"Copper Kettle" - 7" stereo promo singles, Columbia
4-45199 (USA), 6 Jul 1970:
This was the first commercial US stereo single. For mono singles with Wigwam
and Copper Kettle, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76.
Both songs are from Self-Portrait. Copper Kettle is titled Copper Kettle (The Pale Moonlight).
There were two releases of this promo single, with two label designs. The first design (red-orange) has two variants and the second design (blue/yellow) has three variants (the second of which is dated "July 6, 1970"). For three variants of the US commercial stereo single, see below.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

![]() Columbia 4-45199 (USA) - first edition A-side scan by Hans Seegers |
This commercial single was issued in two label designs. The second design has two variants with significantly different text sizes of both "BOB DYLAN" and the song titles. For mono singles with Wigwam and Copper Kettle, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76. Thanks to Hans Seegers and David Plentus for information and scans. |

![]() Columbia 4-45199 (USA) - second edition (variant 1) in special display packaging, scan by Hans Seegers |
The single shown on the left (an example of the first variant of the
second release) is interesting in that it is still in a
special display shrink-wrap with a blue/white card backing with the track
titles, artist and price (78¢). There
is a hole at the top of the card for the single to be hung on a display
rack in a store. The single itself is in a generic buff Columbia sleeve,
folded at the top on both sides. Peter Stone Brown thinks this would have
been for a supermarket rather than a specialist record store, who did not
normally use this type of packaging or display for 7" singles. Thanks to Hans Seegers for the scan of this very rare item. |

"Wigwam"/"Copper Kettle"
- 7" stereo singles, Columbia 4-45199 (Canada/Jamaica/India),
Jul 1970:
Wigwam was confusingly issued in stereo in some countries and mono in
others! The USA and Canada also had the single in stereo. For the US single, see
above. Before this 7" singles had been
only issued in stereo in Japan and in the USA as promo only. For mono Wigwam
singles, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76.
![]() Columbia 4-45199 (Canada) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers |
The Canadian single is interesting in that it was first released with a misprint
on the B-side - the Columbia logo on the right is reversed. It was re-released
with a corrected logo. Both are shown below.
The Jamaican single is one of the very few Dylan singles released directly in Jamaica (rather than being imported from the USA). It was manufactured in the USA and distributed by Record Specialists Ltd., Kingston, Jamaica, whose name appears at the top underneath the Columbia logo. It was released twice, once with orange labels and once with red labels, both shown. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

This very rare Indian single is from CBS Records but has the US catalogue
number. It has a unique black label with silver text. It was distributed in
India by Symphony Salon of Bombay on behalf of CBS, and came in the purple/white
sleeve shown above right with the CBS and stereo logos. For 1969 Indian singles of Lay,
Lady, Lay and Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You with the same label style, see Mono 7"
Singles & EPs 1969 (the singles are actually on separate sub-pages).
This label style was also used for the very rare Indian release of George
Jackson, see
1971. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

"Wigwam"/"Caldera De Cobre [Copper Kettle]" - 7"
stereo promo and commercial singles, CBS 5122 (UK/Spain/Portugal), CBS S 5122 (Ireland), 31 Jul 1970;
CBS :
These two songs were the regular album versions from Self Portrait.
Copper Kettle is titled Copper Kettle (The Pale Moonlight) in the UK. Spain had both stereo and mono releases of this single (as did
Singapore).
For mono Wigwam singles released in West Germany and other countries, see
Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76. Portugal's was only in stereo.
CBS 5122 7" promo and commercial singles (UK):
The promo single has white labels with a red "A", the regular single has orange CBS labels. They didn't have picture sleeves

"Take A Message To Mary"/"Like A Rolling Stone" - stereo 7" single, CBS/Sony CBSA 82070 (Japan), 1970:
Bob Dylan/The Band - "Live At Isle Of Wight" - 7" stereo EP, CBS/Sony SONE 70119 (Japan), 1970:
Various Artists - untitled compilation EP, Top 4 EX-4340 (Iran), 1970?:
This EP was legal in Iran at the time of release, but there is no association with Columbia. These Iranian releases are extremely rare and sell for very high prices.
The A-side has Without Love by Tom Jones and A Place In The Sun by Englebert Humberdinck. The B-side has Lay, Lady, Lay by Bob from Nashville Skyline and Leaving On A Jet Plane by Peter, Paul and Mary. Matrix numbers: A-side - 4340A TP754, B-side - 4340B TP754. This EP is also available in multi-coloured vinyl.
Thanks to Ronald Born and Hans Seegers for information and scans.
Various Artists - untitled compilation EP, Royal RT 598/RT616 (Iran), 1970?:
Hans Seegers dates this from the 1980s although all the tracks are 1970 or
before. The record sleeve has the number RT 616 but the record label has the
number RT 598.
"Self Portrait" - 7" stereo EP, CBS CES 4117
(Singapore), 1970:
This is one of only three EPs released in Singapore - the other stereo
EP is Nashville Skyline from 1969 (see
International Stereo 7" Singles

EP from 1967 (see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1966-68).

"Lay, Lady, Lay" - 7" stereo EP, CBS 20287 (Bolivia), 1971:
This is one of the few Dylan items ever released in Bolivia and is very rare. The blue writing on the alternate front is from a Bolivian radio station.
A-side: Lay, Lady, Lay; One More Night
B-side: Tell Me That It Isn't True; Nashville Skyline Rag
The record was manufactured and distributed in Bolivia by Industrias Fonoelectricas "Lyra" on behalf of CBS. It has 1960s-style plain orange labels with a unique CBS/Columbia logo. All tracks are the regular stereo versions from Nashville Skyline.
For a 1979 Bolivian 7" single, see International 7" & 12" Singles 1977-79.

CBS S 7092 (UK) - A-side of promo single (my copy) |
The UK single comes as both a white label promo and the regular release
with orange labels. The German promo sleeve illustrated below left is a demonstration copy with a stamp in German "Unverkäufliches Muster [Sample Not for Sale]" (across Bob's cheek like a scar!). Hans Seegers has a copy of the Dutch single, the first stereo Dylan single in Holland, with a misprinted A-side label showing the track as Sing, Baby, Sing by Titanic! It plays correctly. For a US single-sided acetate of If Not For You and 1972 US Columbia promo 7" singles of If Not For You paired with Tomorrow Is A Long Time, see Promotional Singles 1970s. The French single sleeve has a "languette" - for more information about the unique French index tabs or "languettes" (few of which have survived), see 1965. On the Spanish single New Morning is the A-side. The titles are translated as "Otra Mañana" and "Si No Fuera Por Ti". On the Venezuelan single below New Morning is translated as the more expected "Nueva Mañana". Thanks to Hans Seegers and Kenneth Robson for information and scans. Thanks to Francisco Lima for information about the Dutch and Spanish releases. |

"Bob Dylan Con The Band [Bob Dylan With The Band]" - 7" stereo EP (withdrawn) and stereo single, CBS 9131 (Spain), 1972:
I mistakenly reported that this EP and single contained rarities, so they were previously listed in detail in 1972. Thanks to Juan B. Heinink for the information via Roger Ford about this EP and single, and to Hans Seegers for much additional information and scans. Juan says this was originally intended to be an EP given away with the first Spanish edition of Blonde On Blonde, with Positively 4th Street and Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window (never before released in Spain) and the live B-side version of Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues from Liverpool, 1966 (R-0054). However the EP was never issued, although a few sleeveless copies left the factory and circulate amongst collectors. Instead a single was released with the same catalogue number (by mistake) and a unique but misleading fold-out picture sleeve, with one song per side. The title of the single is misleading, because The Band do not play on Positively 4th Street.
The contents of the EP were:
A-side: Positively 4th Street; Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?
I mistakenly reported the second track as R-0523, the stereo version of this track. but Juan says the mono version was used by mistake so that both right and left stereo channels are the same. Because the single is badly pressed there is distortion between the tracks which was mistaken for stereo by early reporters: "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? was pressed with a stereo matrix made from a mono magnetic tape (that is to say, it had two sound ways, but with identical information in both), and if there was occasionally a certain stereo feel it was due to an uneven reading of the needles." The performance available on Masterpieces (1978) and Biograph (1985, remastered CD reissue 1997) and the 2001 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations is from the original single and still in mono! This means the only occurrence of the stereo mix is a Columbia US stereo acetate, see 1965.
B-side: Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (live)
This was intended to be Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues live at Liverpool with the
Hawks, May 1966, B-side of mono I Want You US 7" single, (R-0054, see 1966)
This live performance, never released on a regular Columbia album, is also on
the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see
1974), the Japanese
promo EP Mr. D's Collection #2 (see 1977), the 1978 Australian set Masterpieces
(see 1978),
the Japanese Mr. D's Collection #3
promo CD (see 1993), and the
Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see
2005). All versions are as far as I know
still in mono as originally recorded.
Sadly, because of a second error, the B-side actually contains the studio version of It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry from Highway 61 Revisited!
The contents of the single were:
A-side: Positively 4th Street; B-side: Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? (mispressed mono version as above)
Thanks to Juan B. Heinink, Hans Seegers and Jordi Badell for information and scans. For more details see the article "Dylan Classics in the Spanish Tongue" by Juan B. Heinink on his web-site www.zimmingpoint.com.

Denmark had a mono release of Wigwam in 1970 (see

1973. This was imported into Denmark from Holland, with a Danish sleeve and was intended
for school radio only. Sweden had no 1970 release, but did have a 1973 stereo
release, again imported from Holland with a Swedish cover.
Lars M. Banke adds re the cover of the Danish single: "The text means "The theme from TV's "Focus"". The story behind the single is that "Wigwam" was used as the signature tune or theme for a programme titled "Focus" broadcast by the Danish national television channel. And as there was only one national Danish channel when the single was released, there was no need to mention which channel on the sleeve - just "TV"." Billy The Kid. For the generic rear sleeve of the German promo single (which contained the regular record), see 7" Single Sleeves. The German regular sleeve uses one of the Bangladesh Concert pictures of Bob from 1971. For the Swedish release CBS 1762, the record was made in Sweden but it used the Dutch sleeve shown here. The Swedish single occurs with both push-out and open centres as the Dutch single does. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

The Italian and Yugoslavian single have unique picture sleeves taken from the
film of Pat
Garrett & Billy The Kid. Suzy Records of Zagreb (now in Croatia) was a subsidiary of CBS Records. The record had orange CBS labels originally, but was re-released in the 1980s with the new design orange/yellow CBS labels. For an Italian 7" jukebox single with a non-Dylan B-side, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76. Thanks to Nol Grint, Ronald Born and Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

The test pressing is a very rare item, with a completely different sleeve from other promo and commercial releases of the single. The promo single came in a green generic CBS/Sony Japanese sleeve. For this generic sleeve, see 7" Single Sleeves. The commercial single is also comparatively rare. It came with a folded front sleeve - the inside has the story of the film in Japanese and the lyrics in Japanese and English. Information and scans from Hans Seegers (test pressing), Ronald Born (promo single) and Hans Seegers/Sam C. Visser (commercial single) |
