The other side had Changing Of The Guards, the full original Street-Legal version (6:36), 30 seconds shorter than 1999 version. It's now only available on CD on 1994's Greatest Hits Vol. 3.

This US promo single exists in two label variations - the first has the words "SHORT VERSION" or "LONG VERSION" on the left above the "STEREO" text, the second has these on the right above the catalogue number, etc.

For the commercial release of this single with Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) as the B-side, see below.

S CBS 6935 promo 45 (UK), 29 Dec 1978:

This has "Release Date 29 December, 1978" on the radio edit side of the label.

The UK commercial release with Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) as the B-side had the full-length version of Changing Of The Guards as the A-side, see US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1977-79).

"Changing Of The Guards"/"Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power)" - 7" commercial singles, Columbia 3-10851 (USA/Canada), 24 Oct 1978:

Columbia 3-10851 (USA) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers, first variant (R-0147)

R-0147-2 Changing Of The Guards - radio edit, 3:39

This US and Canadian single had no picture sleeve. The US release was available in two label variants: the difference is in the positioning of the text "Taken from the Columbia Lp: "STREET LEGAL" JC 35453" below the song title. On the first variant "Columbia" is on the second line, on the second variant it's on the top line. The second variant also exists with a misprinted B-side label - all the black text is missing.

The UK commercial release of this single had the full-length version of Changing Of The Guards as the A-side, see US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1977-79).

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

The B-side was the standard album version of New Pony.

The Dutch and German commercial singles have identical front covers. The Hungarian single was the only Bob Dylan single issued in pre-perestroika Hungary! It is an authorised copy licensed by CBS - see label scans below.

The Italian single has the release date Aug 28, 1978 as part of the matrix numbers on the vinyl itself.

Thanks to Raoul Verolleman and Hans Seegers for information and scans.

The Spanish version of this single, CBS 6559, has the titles in Spanish as "Cambio De Guardia" and "Nuevo Pony". It came with two rear cover variants and three label variants. Note this sleeve and the Italian release below have the full album picture, not the crop used on other countries' sleeves.

The Yugoslavian release shown was also available in a promo version with a round white sticker with the words "'PROMOTIVNI UZORAK NIJE ZA PRODAJU" in blue lettering (it presumably means "PROMOTIONAL COPY NOT FOR SALE").

There are two A-side label variants - the first has a wide gap between "CHANGING OF THE GUARDS" and the timing "3:39", the second has a much smaller gap.

"Changing Of The Guards"/"We Better Talk This Over" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS BA 222460 (Australia)/CBS BA 461903 (New Zealand), Dec 1978:
Thanks to Bill Hester for initial information about the NZ release.

CBS BA 222460 (Australia) - promo release A-side scan by Hans Seegers (R-0147)

R-0147-4 Changing Of The Guards - radio edit, 3:39

These singles have the edited version of the A-side, even though there's no indication on the labels.

The Australian promo has "DEMONSTRATION ONLY NOT FOR SALE" printed below the CBS logo. The New Zealand promo is actually just a commercial copy with a promo sticker on the B-side (shown below).

These singles had no picture sleeve. The New Zealand release came in a plain orange sleeve unique to New Zealand, see 7" Single Sleeves.

Promo Singles with Changing Of The Guards 5:58 faded version

"Changing Of The Guards" - 7" jukebox singles, CBS JC 117/118 (Italy), Dec 1978:

CBS JC 117 (Italy) - A-side scan by Peter Denzler (R-0765)
These two singles each had the full-length version of the track from Street-Legal (6:36) on the A-side and a non-Dylan track on the B-side. JC 117 has Io Ti Amero by Ana Y Johnny, while JC 118 has Black Water Gold by The Sunshine Band.

R-0765 Changing Of The Guards - faded version (5:58) of original Street-Legal album version (6:36)

Peter Denzler says: "JC 117 has an edit of Changing Of The Guards, which I think to be unique; it is not the single edit, but a fade out of the album version, fading out 38 seconds early at 5:58 mins." Although the record label lists the song as 6:36 - the then standard length - Nol Grint confirms it is 5:58. (His copy has a plain white B-side label with handwritten information but the side still plays R-0765. Does JC 118 also have the faded version?

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Peter Denzler and Nol Grint for information and scans.
