This page lists mono releases of this regular Bob Dylan album. These LPs were
listed here because the mono versions of Dylan songs were
unavailable on CD until the release of the first eight Dylan albums in mono as
The Original Mono Recordings in 2010. Mono LPs with rare tracks (e.g. mono versions with
significant differences from the album tracks, such as different mixes, edits or
fades) are listed in the main chronological pages. Mono singles up to 1976 have their
own pages, see the links above.
Thanks to David Burgess for the UK catalogue numbers - all my mono LPs were
stolen when my Manchester flat was burgled in May 1968!

"Another Side Of Bob Dylan" - mono vinyl LP, Columbia CL 2193 (USA), 8 Aug 1964:
According to
Columbia's recording studio session documents, as collated by Michael Krogsgaard
in his series of articles on "Bob Dylan's Recording Sessions",
this album was recorded on 9 Jun 1964 in one night! The front photograph was taken by Sandy Speiser, another Columbia staff
photographer, who also took the photograph used in 2004 for The Bootleg
Series Vol. 6: Live 1964, see

Renaud Depierreux's promo copy has the number "4" printed at the end of the
bottom line of text (this is a printer code, see below). Gerd Rundel's promo copy is identical
apart from the radio station stamps from WXRT, Chicago, IL, on the rear sleeve.
This sleeve also has a "4" at rear bottom right. Gerd has a second promo copy
without radio station stamps that again has a "4" at rear bottom right.
Thanks to Tim Norford for information about the printer
codes on Columbia US rear sleeves from a book by Bruce Spizer:

Columbia CL 2193 (USA), first commercial release - front of demonstration
copy, scan by Manuel García Jara |
Manuel García Jara has a copy of the first
commercial release with a demonstration sticker on Side 2 that reads "FOR
DEMONSTRATION USE ONLY FOR SALE". "NOT FOR SALE" would be expected, and the
text is aligned as if the word "NOT" should be present, however
there is no sign on the sticker that it was originally present and has been
erased. This copy has a "7"
on the rear sleeve as shown below. Gerd Rundel has found a copy on eBay of
the second commercial release with the words "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE"
rubber stamped on the rear sleeve. The record labels are standard.

Nicholas Kutscheid has a first pressing copy of CL
2193 with the "Guaranteed High Fidelity" label where
the labels on the disc have a textured surface. The label centres have a
grid pattern of Columbia eyes in raised relief (not shown well in the
thumbnails above but easily visible if you click on them to see the larger
sized labels).
Gerd Rundel
has two copies with raised relief Columbia logos, one copy has “GUARANTEED
HIGH FIDELITY” printed slightly lower. Both have the same sleeve (“5” on
rear) and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 – XLP-77042-2D, Side 2 -

Bob Stacy has a copy with second

"360 Mono"/arrows
record labels and later matrix
numbers: Side 1 - D (~3/4 inch space) XLP-770432-2K (the
“3” has been crossed out and above it a “2” is etched), Side 2 - D (~1/2 inch
space) XLP-77043-2AA. The “D” on either side may identify something about
that particular pressing - more information required!
Gerd Rundel's second release copy has
a sleeve with an "A" at rear bottom right. This means the sleeve was
manufactured by Columbia itself at Terre Haute, IN.
The record of Gerd's variant 2 copy has a
wider pressing ring than that of Bob Stacy's copy.
The record labels of Gerd's variant 3 copy look
the same as those of Bob Stacy's copy but all
the black text printing is in a higher position.

Gerd Rundel's third release copy now has
"360 MONO"/arrows
record labels with "NONBREAKABLE" missing to the left of
the centre hole.
Thanks also to Gerd for finding a copy on eBay with a fourth commercial release
design of labels - white "MONO" without arrows and also without
"NONBREAKABLE". This dates from around 1968 as
the labels of the US mono release of John Wesley Harding were like this.
Scott Fugate has a copy of this
fourth release that came
from the collection of a DJ in Santa Barbara, CA at KTMS FM. The record has
matrix numbers: Side

"Another Side Of Bob Dylan" - mono vinyl LP, Columbia CL 2193 (Canada), 8 Aug 1964:
"Another Side Of Bob Dylan" - mono vinyl LP, CBS
BPG
62429 (UK), Nov 1964 (four variants), re-released 1965-66
(two variants):
Peter Viney says he bought his UK copy at the first available opportunity on
7 Nov 1964 (a Saturday), so it must have been released during that week.
Nowadays records are released in the UK on Mondays (on Tuesdays in the USA) but
Peter thinks they were then released on Thursdays, which would make the release
date 5 Nov 1964. Ian Woodward confirms this date.
CBS
BPG
62429 (UK), Nov 1964 (one Philips release, three CBS release variants):
Another Side
Of Bob Dylan
was not only the last Dylan album, but also the last album by any CBS artist, to be
first manufactured by Philips for CBS. Philips pressings exist for both
Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited, but these were
made to meet extra demand, not pressed by Philips first.
CBS BPG 62429 (UK) - front scan by Hans
Seegers (CBS releases, Philips release is the same) |
This album has a laminated front sleeve and a separate
non-laminated rear sleeve. The records have orange CBS labels.
Mick Robinson
believes his copy is the first UK pressing, by Philips on behalf
of CBS. It has a different placement of the catalogue number at top right
of the rear
sleeve from the CBS release. The sleeve also has no folded-over flaps, the
rear sleeve has been pasted over the folded flaps as can be seen from the
detail scan. The record labels are also different from the CBS release. On
Gerd Rundel's and Mick Robinson's copies the Side 1 label has "BPG-62429-1L"
with "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1964" below it. The Side 2 label has "BPG-62429-2L"
with "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1964" below it. The matrix numbers of Mick's
copy are: Side 1 - BPG 62429
1L // 420, Side 2 - BPG 62429 2L // 420 (Peter Viney's copy has the same
matrix numbers). Gerd Rundel's record has stamped matrix numbers:
Side 1
- BPG 62429 1L // 1
V
420 1 1 4, Side 2 - BPG 62429 2L // 1
V
420 1 1 1. These Philips matrix
numbers contain a symbol like an upside down triangle, which I've shown as "V". |

CBS BPG 62429 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (CBS releases,
Philips release has the same text but no folded-over flap)
Gerd Rundel has a copy made by CBS itself, with the
record almost certainly pressed by Oriole Records (CBS variant 1). The rear
sleeve has three folded-over flaps. To the right of the centre hole below
"Blossom Music" the Side 1 label has "BPG 62429 A" with "(P)
1964" below it. The
Side 2 label
has
"BPG 62429 B" with "(P) 1964" below it.
The record of Gerd Rundel's copy has
stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62429 1A 1, Side 2 - 62429 1B 1, quite
different from the complicated Philips matrix numbers.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for finding a CBS made copy on eBay with different
positioning of the track list, with the song titles more
widely spaced (variant 2).
Jérémie Viala's CBS copy comes in a sleeve with three folded-over flaps
as shown. The
record has dark orange labels and different positioning of the track list
again, with the song titles again more widely spaced, but printed higher, so
this is listed as variant 3.
CBS

CBS BPG 62429 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd
Rundel
(1965-66 release variant 1)
Thanks to
Éamonn Ó Catháin and
Peter Oudejans for the information about their mixed labels copies.
The labels have "BOB DYLAN" below the album title
with
“33⅓”
on the Side 1,
but a Side 2 label
with just "33" (same as
Jérémie Viala's CBS variant 3 above).
The outer sleeve is the same as that of Hans Seegers' copy above with a
laminated front sleeve and three folded-over flaps on the rear.
Éamonn Ó Catháin`s record has
stamped matrix numbers:
Side 1 - 62429 1A 1, Side 2 - 62429 1B 1, and there is a stamped "C" on both
sides opposite the "62429". This record comes in a plain white inner sleeve with
a cut-out centre and an inner clear plastic bag.
Gerd Rundel's variant 2 copy comes again in the same sleeve with three
folded-over flaps as Hans Seegers' CBS release above. But now there is no “BOB
DYLAN” below the album title on the labels. The record housed in an inner sleeve
which is the same as the listed 1966 UK mono Blonde on Blonde
inner sleeve. Dylan albums up to
Highway 61 Revisited
are listed on the rear of this sleeve but not Blonde On Blonde.
The stamped record matrix numbers are:
Side 1 - 62429 1A 1, Side 2 - 62429 1B 1.
Henry Cooper's copy
includes the same inner sleeve, but has the earlier record labels with "33" and not "33⅓"
as well as "BOB DYLAN" below the album
title. The matrix numbers of this copy are also: Side 1 -
62429 1A 1, Side
2 - 62429 1B 1 as well as
the stamped "C".
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Mick Robinson, Gerd Rundel,
Jérémie Viala
and Peter Oudejans for information and scans.

There are two label variants - on the first Side 1 there's a space between
the album title and the first song title and the last song, To Ramona, is listed
on two lines. On the second Side 1 the album title and the first song title are
close together and To Ramona is listed on one line. On Side 2 the second copy
again has a smaller gap between the album title and the second song title. The
sleeves are both shown but appear identical. There are three folded-over flaps.
All the record labels shown have round the circumference at the bottom the
text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS"
without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were
manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS.
The stereo version of this album was not released until 1967, see
International Album
Releases (Regular).

All these albums were made in Italy by CBS Italiana

printed in Italy by Stampa Reparto Grafico C.G.D. All the albums shown have
a sleeve with two folded-over flaps on the rear. The 1966 and 1967 albums
have a laminated front sleeve and there is a lamination line on the rear
sleeve along the right hand edge. The 1970 and early 1970s sleeves appear to
have an unlaminated front, because there is no sign of a lamination line on
the rear sleeve. |

All the records have orange CBS labels. The original
1966 labels have the
album title and "BOB DYLAN" above the centre CBS logo. The 1967 labels have the
album title and "BOB DYLAN" below the centre CBS logo and are
now dated "(P)
1967". The 1970 reissue has only the album title below the
centre CBS logo, with "BOB DYLAN" on the second to bottom line, the labels are again dated "(P) 1967".
The early 1970s record labels have the same layout as the 1970 labels
except that "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR S.p.A." is now printed in the
circumference text to the right of the centre hole.
The record of thsi copy has stamped
matrix numbers: Side 1 - CL 62429 1L 4/3/90, Side 2 - CL 62429 2L 4/3/70.
"4/3/70" (4 Mar 1970) must be the mastering date.
