Bob Dylan - CD releases

Home ] Up ]

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

US stereo LP sleeve
Original US stereo LP, Columbia CS 8579, Mar 1962.

The photographer was Don Hunstein, a Columbia staff photographer. The photograph has been reversed for some reason (probably so that the neck of the guitar didn't obscure the Columbia logo)! The first track, "You're No Good" by Jesse Fuller, is mistitled as "She's No Good" on many releases. There is some debate about this since Jesse Fuller's own version is actually called "Crazy About A Woman"! (For more information, see here.)

For mono releases of this album, see Mono Album Releases.

CBS/Sony 25DP 5281 (Japan) - 1988 obi scan by Hans Seegers

The 1988 release has a yellow, black, red, white and yellowish-green obi with price ¥2,500 (the "25 in the catalogue number meant that the price was ¥2,500). There was no sales tax in Japan at the time. The 1989 release after sales tax was introduced has the same obi and catalogue number with reduced price ¥2,348 (¥2,280 before tax). Both have a 28 page booklet. "Bob Dylan" and the tracklisting are shown on the front.

The 1993 release in the "Nice Price Line" series has a black, red, white and blue obi with price ¥1,800 (¥1,748 before tax). the release date is "93-9-22" (22 Sep 1993) and the withdrawal date is "95-9-21" (21 Sep 1995). All the Dylan albums in this reissue batch have consecutive serial numbers, this is the first. It has a 4 page folded insert in English, of which the rear is shown (the front is the same as 25DP 5281). There is also an insert in English and Japanese which folds out to six pages.

The 1997 release in the "Nice Price 1600" series has a red obi with price ¥1,600 (¥1,553 before tax) and release "97-2-1" (1 Feb 1997). The withdrawal date is "99-1-31" (31 Jan 1999). It has a 4 page folded insert in English. There is also an insert in English and Japanese which folds out to six pages.

You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on all releases.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen for information and scans.

"Bob Dylan" - CD releases, Columbia CK 8579 (USA), 1989, re-released 1990s:

Columbia CK 8579 (USA) - long box front scan by Hans Seegers
The first CD release of this album came in the long box format unique to the USA. The picture on the box front and the CD front insert is not a crop of the original album front but an out-take from the 1962 photo session. On this out-take picture Bob's head is tilted slightly further forward and his hand is slightly further down the guitar, with his top right hand finger further away from the fret. The box front has a "NICE PRICE" sticker. The front insert picture has "Bob Dylan" in the top left hand corner instead of to Bob's right and doesn't display the track listing.

You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was correctly titled on the box rear and on the front and rear inserts of the CD jewel case, but incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the CD itself. Wil Gielen has a copy of the US release imported into Japan with an obi from the Shinseido record store chain.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. Thanks to Jack from Canada for noticing the photo differences.

"Bob Dylan" - CD releases, Columbia CK 8579 (Canada), 1989, re-released 1990s:

Columbia CK 8579 (Canada) - front scan by Moise Potié (both releases)
Moise Potié's first copy bought in Canada has the US CD artwork above but a slightly different CD with differences as shown. The second Canadian copy has "Made in Canada" on both the front insert and the CD, as well as Canadian copyright information on the rear insert. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was again correctly titled on the front and rear inserts, but incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the CD itself.

"Bob Dylan" - CD releasse, Columbia COL CD 32001 (Europe), 1991, re-released 1990s (two variants):

All releases:

Columbia COL CD 32001 (Europe) - front scan by Keith Schweiger (all releases)

Columbia COL CD 32001 (Europe) - unfolded front insert scan by Gerd Rundel (all releases)

Columbia COL CD 32001 (Europe) - inside pages of front insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (all releases)

Columbia COL CD 32001 (Europe) - CD scan by Gerd Rundel (all releases)

This release, which was manufactured in Austria for distribution throughout Europe, came with an eight-page booklet. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on both CD inserts and the CD itself. Like the US CD above "Bob Dylan" is on the left of Bob's head in the front picture and the track listing is omitted.

Thanks to Harald Sigvartsen for pointing out two more title errors: Fixin' To Die and Highway 51 are listed as "Fixin' To Die Blues" and "Highway 51 Blues" on both inserts and the CD itself.

The CD is the same for all releases shown.

Original release (1991):

CBS COL CD 32001 (Europe) - detail of rear insert scan by Gerd Rundel (second "Nice Price" release - also "CB|701", rectangle round barcode)

Keith Schweiger has a later release with a "Nice Price" sticker and a "Nice Price" catalogue in the front insert booklet.  Gerd Rundel has a "Nice Price" copy without the front sticker and a completely different CBS rear insert. The last page of the "Nice Price" catalogue has "2/92", which may mean "Feb 1992" or "second release 1992".

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Keith Schweiger and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

CBS 462835 2 (Australia) - front insert scan by Hans Seegers (all releases except "Select" and "Select the Best for Less" series)
These releases all had a single card front insert. The CDs for all the CBS releases were made by Disctronics Limited.

CBS 462835 2 (Australia), 1988:

CBS 462835 2 (Australia) - front insert scan by Gerd Rundel (1988 "Select Best for Less" series)

The 1988 "Select the Best for Less Series" release has unique front and rear inserts, presumably generic for this CBS Australia CD series. The reverse of the front insert is dated 1988. The discs were again made by Disctronics.

Columbia 462835 2 (Australia), 1991, re-released mid-1990s:

Columbia 462835 2 (Australia) - front in red jewel case with stickers, scan by Jim Siddy (1991 release)

The album was re-released in 1991 with the Columbia logo on the disc itself, but still used the CBS logo on the jewel case inserts. "Bob Dylan" and the tracklisting are shown on the front. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller is correctly titled on the CD inserts and the CDs themselves. Jim Siddy's 1991 copy comes in a jewel case with a red tray and two stickers - one with "REDHOT" and the other with "DYLAN ORIGINALS 30 YEARS ON COLUMBIA".

Stuart Moore has three Columbia CD releases, the first CD from 1991 has the four lines of text above the catalogue number as: line 1 - "MANUFACTURED", line 2 - "IN AUSTRALIA BY SONY", line 3 - "MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT", line 4 - "(AUSTRALIA) LIMITED". The later 1990s release CD has the text as: line 1 - "MANUFACTURED IN", line 2 - "AUSTRALIA BY SONY MUSIC", line 3 - "ENTERTAINMENT", line 4 - "(AUSTRALIA) LIMITED". The final CD release has this text spread over three lines only.

Columbia 19075936012 (Australia) - front with "Gold Series" sticker, scan by Stuart Moore
The front and reverse of the front insert are exactly the same as the original release and the reverse still has the previous catalogue number "462835 2". The rear insert now has the Sony Music logo, the new barcode number and the new catalogue number "19075936012" on the spine. The Gold CD has exactly the same layout as the 1991 four-line release (see above).

"Bob Dylan" - CD release, Barca 9011 (Argentina), 1990s:

More information and scans of this release required.

"Bob Dylan" - CD release, Landy Star Music LS-3367 (Russia), 1990s:

Landy Star Music LS-3367 (Russia) - front scan by Keith Schweiger
This release, on the amusingly named Landy Star Music label, is almost certainly unauthorised, so full details are in Questionable Releases.

Thanks to Keith Schweiger for information and scans.

"Bob Dylan" - CD releases, Columbia/Sony Music CK 08579/CD 32001 (Taiwan), late 1990s:

Columbia/Sony Music CK 08579/CD 32001 (Taiwan) - detail of alternate rear, scan by Keith Schweiger

Although previous Bob Dylan releases from Taiwan are pirates, this CD was the first official release from the Taiwanese Sony pressing plant. It was also exported to mainland China. Hans Seegers' copy is still sealed, and has a Chinese language obi. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller is incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the rear CD insert. Keith Schweiger's copy is also sealed, and has a different "Nice Price" sticker. The rear inserts have different Columbia logos, I suspect that Keith's is an earlier release.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"Bob Dylan" - remastered CD-R promo release, Sony BMG (no catalogue number) (Austria for Europe), Jun 2005:

Plain paper front insert
Legacy Recordings have been using the slogan "Not Just Reissued... Reimagined" for some time, but this album and The Times They Are A-Changin', released at the same time, are described as "reasserted" - whatever that means! The sound is certainly very good indeed and removes the "false stereo" image of the original stereo albums and CD releases.

This promo CD-R release comes in a clear plastic wallet with a plain paper insert showing the album title and track list only, plus the Sony BMG logo. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller is correctly titled.

The CD-R is plain with only the album title and number of tracks.

Thanks to the staff at Badlands, Cheltenham, UK, for these promos.

Columbia CK 94239 (USA) - front scan by Hans Seegers (sealed copy)
This release is a stereo CD only, not a hybrid SA-CD. The packaging restores the original artwork with "Bob Dylan" and the tracklisting between Bob and his guitar. There are three previously unpublished contemporary photos on the back page of the front insert booklet and the rear insert.

The 8-page stapled booklet reproduces the original sleeve notes and features four more pictures. The CD reproduces the original "6-eye" 1962 US Columbia label design. Thanks to John Parris for pointing out the record sounds as if it's in mono, since the absurd channel separation of the original stereo mix has been removed. In fact, I understand it's in "natural" stereo, so as the voice, guitar and harmonica are from one vertical point in space, the horizontal separation is almost unnoticeable.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for the US release scans.

The price is ¥1.890. There is a folded insert containing Japanese language sleeve notes plus lyrics in English and Japanese. The front sticker, different from the ones on the 2004 Japanese releases in card sleeves, advertises the free six-track CD Bob Dylan Live At Carnegie Hall 1963 (see 2005). In Japan this can only be obtained in exchange for five vouchers, one from each of the following newly-released albums (the purple voucher is shown below):

Sony Music SICP 20213 (Japan) - front of sealed copy, scan by Wil Gielen
This release is on a Blu-spec CD, an audio-only disc which is presumably intended to be Sony's new high quality audio format. The copy shown is still sealed, with a blue and white obi with price ¥2,500 (¥2,381 before tax). The release date is shown as "09-8-26" (26 Aug 2009), the original release date as "62-3-19" (19 Mar 1962) and the withdrawal date as "10-2-25" (25 Feb 2010). It's not actually a Blu-ray disc as it says on the sticker, but it is made using Blu-ray technology.

Thanks to Wil Gielen for information and scans.

The album was in a plastic bag with World Gone Wrong and a book about Bob in Italian. The CD is the 2005 remastered release. Thanks to Dag Braathen for the screenshot from iTunes Germany in Dec 2012 showing a unauthorised version of Bob Dylan with four extra tracks from Carolyn Hester's 1962 self-titled Columbia album, three of which have Bob on harmonica (Los Bibilicos is included but does not include Bob). See 1962 for the official Carolyn Hester album. See Online Recordings (Other) for releases of this album under different names on iTunes UK, Jan 2013.

"Bob Dylan" - unauthorised CD release, Hallmark (catalogue number?) (UK), 14 Jan 2013:

Picture from www.amazon.co.uk
Thanks to Bill Hester for information about this release of Bob's first album, presumably "legal" because of copyright expiry in the EU after fifty years. See Online Recordings (Other) for releases of this album under different names on iTunes UK, Jan 2013.

"Bob Dylan" - unauthorised 2CD stereo and mono release, Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (UK), Jan 2013:

Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (UK) - front of slipcase, picture from www.ginza.se
Thanks to Anders Lindh for information about this 2CD release, again presumably "legal" because of copyright expiry in the EU after fifty years. As well as stereo and mono versions of the album, it includes two bonus tracks. According to Derek Barker of "Isis" magazine, Not Now Music informed him they were both sides of the original Mixed Up Confusion/Corrina, Corrina mono 7" single (R-0007 and R-0008, see 1962). However, this is completely wrong - Mixed Up Confusion is the stereo overdubbed alternate take from the original release of Biograph (R-0748, see 1985) and Corrina, Corrina is an unfaded version of mono track from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan with a final drum roll from drummer Herb Lovelle (2:53 instead of 2:44)! As this is a completely new rarity, full details are in 2013.

Special thanks to Anders for the album! I agree with Paul S. Levine that this should strictly be listed in Questionable Releases, but I've included it here because of the interest in the rarities. There are many other grey area releases of this album listed there!

"The Complete Album Collection Vol. One" - 47CD boxed set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; USB stick, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; Sony Music SICP 30471-30520 (Japan), 26 Mar 2014 onwards:

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks.

The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK1" plus "DISC 1". The CDs are different in detail, the US Bob Dylan CD has catalogue number "88691924312D1", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-01". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details at the bottom of each CD are shown here for this album, but not for any of the others.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The first part, called Dylan '60s, will be released by Sony Music Japan on 26 Mar 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs, which are numbered SICP 30471 to SICP 30481 (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, not included in the US and European sets, is included here as SICP 30479). Side Tracks, to be released at the same time, is SICP 30519-20. All the sleeves will have orange top obis similar to the 2004 Japanese release in card sleeves. The 2013 remastered Bob Dylan will be SICP 30471 - more details will be added when available (this album was not one of those released in Blu-spec CD2 format in 2013).

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for the picture of the 1960s decade set from www.amazon.com. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
